kilaalaa
58 minutes ago, .crestfallen. said: For those of you who are still worried and uncertain, Please read @Meliere's AMAZING post on the MT about TK and JH's wonderful characterizations by the writer (with @packmule3's detailed analysis). I've been visiting here since the beginning, read/lurked all 3 threads, considered different POVs, and stayed skeptical/neutral to save my own weak heart ^^. But after episodes 17 & 18, the answer is all too clear: TAEK IS ENDGAME, without a doubt, like it or not. Hide contents Color theory, trolling clues, twists, etc.--they're good in the name of fun (and ratings), but unless the writer REALLY REALLY REALLY wants to throw 18 episodes of her storytelling, characterization, carefully planted symbols/dialogue/foreshadowing/etc. down the drain, there is no way it can be JH without ruining EVERYTHING she has worked so hard for. And that includes all of the work she's put into trolling us, too. Because JH is billed as the lead, I watched the drama with that in mind. For any hint favoring TK, I thought of multiple other interpretations which could favor JH. However, as TK's character was steadily developed in the middle episodes, JH's came to a frustrating standstill. I had thought the writer was simply playing catch up to build two equal contenders for DS' heart. Even at the end of episode 16, you could say that they felt 'equal.' But the pendulum never swung back in JH's favor... In fact, it swung in TK's favor as we were finally shown DS' own self-developed feelings. Episode 17 showed that without any action from either boy, DS has TK in her heart. Episode 18 confirmed that even with JH's raw and awfully heartfelt confession, DS is unmoved in liking TK. JH has cried bitter tears, owned up to his faults, and gracefully bowed out of the game...and here we see the writer's intention for JH all along: he was never meant to be developed as DS' final love. Viewers everywhere felt frustrated watching JH and his lack of development--but his "lack of development" is a character development in itself. I believe he is the lead here not because he leads the love triangle but because he leads the show. This is a family-oriented drama about the growth of two people: JH and DS. Their families are highlighted in the official posters not because they will eventually be joined by marriage but because they shape and support the maturation of these two characters. JH (described as "dog-like" and not "human") and DS (with her insecurities and lack of self-awareness) start out as the most immature of the group, and thus have the most to gain in the course of its story. The early episodes focused on JH's growth through his interactions with everyone around him (and thus mislead viewers into thinking he was the lead --> would win the girl). Learning to swallow his pride and fears of vulnerability in order to express his feelings honestly was the final frontier in this process. For as long as he struggled over this, JH could not mature as a person in the same way his character could not be developed further within the story's framework. Because often growth is painful and comes by way of failure, JH cannot end up with DS if the writer is to make her point to the audience. If JH can be frustratingly silent, waste 5 years, and still win the love of his life, what was the point? Again, unless the writer and producers want to shoot themselves in the foot (AND THEY WON'T) after all of the production's efforts of casting the right actors, crafting detailed sets, and 18+ episodes of live filming on top of their own merit and integrity as artists, TAEK WILL BE THE HUSBAND. Sorry to talk so much about JH but I think no one should have any reason to be gloomy here I respect the baduk etiquette we have so come to love, yet even more so, I respect the artistry of the writer. Reasonable doubt is understandable but at this point in the story, the husband hunt is pretty much a done deal. Everything is being wrapped up nicely; we're only waiting to put the bow on top ^_^. It's just a question of how, when, and where for TK-DS now. Please don't let nervousness and uncertainty blind you from seeing the genius inherent in the writer's work. I would rather we be gloomy from empathizing with JH (and how unfortunately relatable is his character to our real lives? the pains of regret... *sigh*) than from the fear of Taektanic sinking at the last minute by a completely illogical twist of narrative. Edit: Ooh, a preview. *goes off to watch* Still, it changes nothing ^^ OMG your analysis is so beautiful. For the longest time I wondered why they showed us the trailer of the gang running with JH and DS looking like they were the leads. You explained it so beautifully that this drama is about the growth of JH and DS. *tears* BTW welcome to the Taektanic Taektanium ship!

chicha
@allegramente i bow down to this incredible theory lol how fascinating!! There is definitely a pattern here even the phrases are reused in this drama... Either as a foreshadowing or just they like the sound of it? lol Bora says SW really knows how to make someone bothered... And DS says that to Taekie too. When she had to deliver food to him... DS told her friends Taek doesn't talk much and is frustrating to death, recently SW repeated the same phrase describing his dates lol
Popular Post moonkeeper
@packmule3 Another amazing analysis.. My feellaaaaaa roommates.... The chocolate theory really make sense and after reading this, lets chill a bit.. Spoiler Posted 2 minutes ago On the uses of humor. To parody Jane Austen: It’s a truth universally acknowledged that any woman in poverty of a good wit MUST also be in want of a genius. Fortunately, for fellow script-shippers, the writer of Reply 1988 has been endowed with a brilliant mind with an eye for the absurd. For me, humor is the most sublime form of intelligence. But the scriptwriter is handicapped by the simple fact that a MAJORITY of her audience will NOT get her humor 100% of the time. Understanding her “inside jokes,” in particular, can be very challenging. Like the “wedding parodies” that I mentioned before, an inside joke implies a shared knowledge between two parties to which a third party is oblivious. But everything will be clear when the show ends and we do a rewatch. So let me point out some of the inside jokes as I see them. 1. "Star" Meta-joke: In Episode 1, when the grown-ups were waiting for Taek Choi to arrive at his celebration party, DS’ mom said “The star of the show always shows up last”. True that. Many people realized too late that the Death Star -- or TaecStar – had been fully functional for a long while. They were caught off-guard because they weren’t paying attention to the script. 2. Story-within-the-story joke. While people were focused on dog/cat/mouse/bullfrog, the titles of the books mentioned in Episode 2 were largely ignored. They are meta. This is proof that the scriptwriter KNEW EXACTLY how this story would end even from the beginning. Nothing is random with her. --“Officer and the Princess” for JH. He turned out to be at officer in the Air Force. The drivel about the hero’s chiseled chest is a reference to JH’s chest. It was much ado about nothing. --“Audition for Love” is for DR. DR loved DS, too, in his own way. His hair-tugging is a classic sign of a guy wanting a girl’s attention. Also, he was the one who brought up the topic of DS being cute. In Episode 14, when he said “How annoying [that DS liked TK more]! Do you hate me?” I thought then that he was indirectly asking about his “chances”. However, he’s learned to love her VICARIOUSLY, that is, he experienced “his” romance THROUGH Taec’s experience. He only “auditioned” for the show (literally, too); he wasn’t the STAR. DS called the book “weak” and and it was only about kissing, which could be taken a joke about DR’s porn obsession. --“Dangerous Roommate” is obviously for TK. This was the book that DS hugged and begged to include sexy passages. lol. [credit: Dramabeans for book title] The only person without a book is SW because he was already in love with her sister. 3. Meta joke on JH. In Episode 10, JH walked into the wall. Here is how Dramabeans described it: They head down the stairs and stop in their tracks when Jung-hwan comes out of her house looking awkward. He stammers that he had something to say to her, and pulls her aside for a chat. On the way up, he kind of gets trapped under the awning and can’t extract himself without looking uncool. It’s so awkward. I love it. I agree, that was cute. However, it was actually a foreshadowing. He was walking into a *dead-end*.He’d be blocked. 4. Another meta joke on JH. In Episode 16, JH was working on a math problem. Here’s how Dramabeans described it: Dong-ryong is the only one who notices that Jung-hwan has been working on the same math problem for days now. He tells Jung-hwan to just move on already, but we know it’s not math that’s got him stumped. This is a foreshadowing, too. DR’s advice to him was: “Don’t you know the concept of “passing”? Just move on.” Take into consideration JH’s prophecy in Episode 11 that “he’ll be fine on his own”, and his words in Episode 18 to “move on”, he wasn't a doomed and pathetic as Chilbongie was in Reply 1994. He was making a conscious decision to let go, and if he were an actual person, and not a figment of the scriptwriter’s imagination, I’d respect and support his choice. 5. DR’s trolls on DS: In Episode 14, DR and DS were talking on the steps. DS asked: “Why doesn’t anyone like me?” DR pretended to see somebody from a distance, going, “Oh! It’s Taek!” Look at how eager DS looked up to find TK. That was a troll for both DS and the viewers as well who got a pretty good view of DS’ excited and expectant face. Shortly, they met up with TK. Here’s how Dramabeans described it: …when Taek says he bought five pies so that they could each take one home, Dong-ryong says lovingly, “Let’s get married.” Taek turns him down, poor thing, but he holds Deok-sun back and asks her to come over for a little while. This is a foreshadowing, too. TK rejected DR, but he grabbed hold of his choice of bride. 6. The pot meta joke. As my local newspaper The Washington Post says, “If you don’t get it, you don’t get it.” 7. “Just kidding” joke. I believe that there’s a bit of truth behind every “just kidding” jokes. When DS ordered TK to “Take it off” and shocked him, I think, she was deliberately being provocative. Her deadpan delivery was meant to confuse him. 8. Another confusing “Just kidding” joke. In Episode 2, when DS teased TK about marrying her, she also confused him. Most people saw that as “babying” but the alternative view here is “flirting." Finding an excuse for skinship, like touching a guy in a nonthreatening way, and getting his full attention by smiling widely at him are considered Flirtation 101. Also, notice her change of focus here. With the first two guys, she was asking them about her APPEARANCE. “How do I look?” It was about “Me” and she expected compliments. That’s why JH dismissed her with “I’m late. Pishs off! With TK, however, she shifted the focus TO HIM: When did YOU get back from the tournament. [You] drink up. [You] hurry up and grow tall. So YOU can marry me. See that? The dynamics are different even back then. 9. A revealing “Just kidding” joke. In Episode 6, DS’ mom teased her about wanting TK as son-in-law, repeating her old joke from Episode 2. What was DS’ answer? She asked, "Should I seduce him then?" Lol. People who insist that DS treats TK as a brother don’t get this. "Seduction" is NOT a word or an idea that enters a girl's mind who regards her childhood friend as a mere baby brother. Heck no! DS had read those trashy novels in Episode 2, she knew of porn that the guys watched, and she knew very well what SEDUCTION meant. ~~Dangerous Roommate, please give me lots of sexy scenes ~~~ When she joked about seducing TK, it meant she saw him as a man, not as a kid brother. Her joke also paralleled TK’s words to his friends: I don't think of her as a friend. I see her as a WOMAN. The difference however is in the delivery, TK said it resolutely, firmly, whereas DS said it jokingly. Noteworthy, too: DS became defensive when DS’ mom said that TK was into baduk anyway and he really wasn't into girls [meaning he led as ascetic life, not that he was gay.] She whined “Why what's wrong with me?!!” That was an odd response from a girl who only saw a guy as a younger brother or a friend. Her response should have been to laugh it off and to not take personally. Compare DS’ sensitive reaction to SW’s mom's response when she teased about marrying TK’s dad. Her answer was the natural one. She laughed away their teasing and said: all thing being equal, she’d rather not marry a bear. It’d be just the same as marrying NO ONE. That was the proper response DS should have given: a joke. 10. “Just kidding” as a blunder. This playful banter about “Marrying Taec/Taking Responsibility” showed how joking can escalate into misunderstandings. At first, DS took the joking in stride, even exchanging some jokes of her own. She was feisty when DR said to TK needed a girl just like her to introduce him to hardship. SHE was fine. However, I believe her mood changed when SW turned to tease TK and asked him, “Hey! Do you like her, too? Because you’re grinning there” and an embarrassed TK tried to cover up his smiles by saying “annii”. If people noticed, the camera didn’t show us DS’ reaction to TK’s denial here. But the next thing we knew, she was excusing herself to go to the bathroom. People assumed that she was upset with DR who was mercilessly teasing her. But I believe that she was upset of TK’s ONE WORD. She misunderstood him. She thought his “no” = I don’t like her, when actually "no" meant he was embarrassed being put in the spotlight. DS' reaction here was normal. To a girl like her, after spending the whole day frolicking on the beach together and after spending time with him in China just a few days ago, his joking denial would be equal to a personal insult for her. It's "What the --?" This would explain why in the next episode, when they met up again and TK requested for coffee, water and warm water, she totally misread his “running errands” joke [he really wanted her to stay for a while with him and not leave] and accused him of USING her like a slave girl, like they were back in China. She beat him up. 11. Absence of marriage jokes in connection with JH. For me, this was a giveaway that he wasn’t meant to be the OTP. Sure, DS’ girlfriends teased her about going out on a date with him, but her girlfriends’ judgment is impaired. None of DS’ family members saw JH as a possible contender. Considering how close these two families were and how JH’s dad doted on DS, the parents didn’t consider forming an obvious "alliance" between JH and DS. Also, in Episode 11, Bora indicated surprise that DS and JH have become closer. When DS replied that they’ve always been close, Bora just made a face. Even NE questioned JH's Christmas gift. JH had to kick and chase him down the stairs so he’d give the present to DS, Noteworthy: The Future Husband said that it took him 10 years before he could address NE informally. Taek’s natural diffidence and inhibition would indeed make it hard for him to treat NE like a kid brother. He wouldn't kick or be impatient with NE even when NE is acting like a big, overgrown baby. 12. Jwi gag. This scene with JH also warned me too that I might be wrong with my assumptions that JH is the OTP. Yes, he might be the leading man, but the scriptwriter might have other plans for him. You see, compared to the jwi incident with TK and DR, this did NOT at all advance his case as the Future Husband. It did not link his personality trait to him. What happened here was he had cramps, DS teased him. He told her to stop it; she didn’t. They both laughed. Fade-away shot. In comparison, with TK’s jwi incident, DS chased after him and DR with the mice. They boys escaped by going back inside. Then, DR grabbed ahold of TK and told him to reconsider his affection for DS. Meaning, if he chose DS, he’d be consigned to a life of “torture”. TK reaffirmed his view that she’s cute. How does this connect with the Future Husband? Two ways: The Future Husband told the grown-up DS to be kind to him because he’s been understanding and tolerant of her. Where could he find a husband like him, he asked. Also, the Future Husband thought she was cute. 13. Baduk vs Chinese checkers meta joke. In Episode 1, we see JH’s mother move a green piece on his checker board, and people naturally pounced on that and determined that green was JH was color. No. That isn’t the point there, unfortunately. The point here is comparison and contrast between Baduk and Chinese checkers. Both boys have these two different board games beside their beds. Baduk = TK and Chinese checkers = JH. As a game of theory and strategy, Chinese checkers is grossly outmatched by Baduk. Chinese checkers isn’t even Asian in origin. It’s a German-invented game. Why would the scriptwriter choose such a simplistic game to represent the first lead? [If it were chess, then yes, I’d consider it an even match because I play chess, @shooastrid Ha!] Why would the director make the baduk world so integral to plot, showing us news reports, educating us on its etiquette, timing and scheduling of their encounters around Baduk, if the Chinese checkers guy was going to win the girl at the end? It doesn’t make sense; it’s absurd. 14. The future NoEul joke. One style of this scriptwriter/director combo is to loop a conversation through time. It was splendidly done In Reply 1994. In that show, the audience see the heroine NJ cleaning up her house. She was looking for beloved stuffed toy. Her Trash Oppa interrupted her housecleaning to tell her that a package was coming and to leave it in his room. Later on, she discovered that he had bought a replacement for the stuffed toy that she had lost. Now, the audience is transported to the current time and they see NJ being asked to pick up a package at the concierge downstairs. It was for her “mystery” husband. Now, in this Reply 1988, the same thing happened. There was a loop in the conversation, a time-travel. In Episode 14, when TK brought a banana to DS’ house and NE joined them, the noona and dongaeng shared a conversation:DS: How is it possible that you're getting older than our dad? NE: It's okay. A face like mine becomes younger later on. TK said nothing but he smiled at DS as she wiped her brother’s dry skin. Fastforward to the future, in Episode 8, when NE visits DS and her husband, this topic of aging is echoed: DS: How is that you look younger by the day? [addressing NE] HUSBAND/TK: [defending NE] He finally looks his age, that's all. It took me ten years to speak informally to this punk. See the connection? Of all the guys, TK was the only one who knew of NE’s joke about his age, because he was there when they had a conversation that his face would sooner or later catch up to his age. There’s also the ginseng. lol. The Future NoEul passed by their apartment because DS was giving him ginseng. Back in 1989, DS shared a banana with him, given by TK. What’s the connection? Ginseng is expensive, and older people value it because of its anti-aging properties. Bananas was expensive, too, at that time. But they were reserved for children like Jinjjo and NoEul because they were nutritious. I didn’t invent these details. They were written by the scriptwriter. 15. Last, the chocolate PARODY. This was in Episode 16. Like in the Wedding Parody, there were two things occuring at once. On the surface, we see DS and DR talking on the bus about how competitive TK was. But there was another story unfolding surreptitiously here. DR said that TK won because he was competitive; he didn’t like to be number 2. Just like Jong Bung. This is the answer to the chocolate mystery. “Kim Jong Bung and Choi Tae. Something famous linked these two.” As DR narrated the events of the Galaga video game rivalry to DS, the incidental things that occurred during that fateful day were presented in front of our eyes. First there was the chocolate. Then, the 3 backpacks. Then, the hotdog. Finally, there was the jacket. [note to self: his left hand finger dexterity was also fine.] You see what was going on here? The scriptwriter and director made an inside joke, thinking that a third party like us wouldn't observe it. #wesawwhatyoudidthere #lol JB and TK were infamously linked in time not only because of the Galaga game but also because of the Ghana chocolate. DS did intend to give the chocolate to TK but the chocolate ended up with JB. That was how he learned to write a love letter to Mi-Ok using the chocolate. JB’s motive for getting the chocolate was implied: he lost to TK. That’s why none of the boys here, in Episode 17, even did a double-take at the sight of the chocolate. They’ve never received a chocolate from DS. Now, people asked me how could have DS confused SW’s jacket as belonging to TK? Or why didn’t DS stop and get TK’s jacket on their way out? The answer there is “I DON’T KNOW”. lol. Really.Literally. If you go back to Episode 1, the Adult DS already laid the foundation for her defense. She was going to excuse her mental lapse regarding the chocolate by pleading diminished capacity. She had inhaled the most carbon monoxide so she was poisoned and couldn’t think properly. “Diminished Capacity” lol. To repeat my Jane Austen parody: It’s a truth universally acknowledged that any woman in poverty of a good wit MUST also be in want of a genius. ******** For @ororomunroe, thank you.
taeksun
They are going to keep us hanging till the end aren't they haha? Having rewatched the preview, I can only say I'm hopeful. If we had gotten more 'happy' taeksun moments, I'd probably actually be more worried. junghwan's chuckle-smile when taek tells him about the wallet says so much. That is not someone who is a rival, that is someone who is a good friend and who wants the best for his friend. And the way taek and deoksun look at each other and just smile involuntarily also just says everything. Their feelings are too strong to be hidden anymore. I think deoksun is going to confess, to put herself out there and like someone, pursue someone, first. Not because of others, but because of her own heart. The two of them - and every single one of us - are probably going to be in tears by the end of that hotel scene and hopefully it'll be purely happy tears and for our faith, maybe we'll be rewarded with a kiss or two (or three or.....) salz
off topic but im super glad @packmule3 share her opinion about DR feel for DS because he is the type of kid that show how he feel through pulling girl hair in playground to get her attention, bicker and joke with her though he mostly keep within himself being the joker of the group..if JH not honest i think DR even worse lol but i have no doubt he do love DS in his own way, being her true friend when she need him, giving her love advice lol even he himself might hide his feel..i think i said before DR remind me a lot of Haitai in R94 where he actually do love NJ but never do anything with his feel but still be the bestfriend she need, trust&end up as her bestman... that why DR is special to me and my 2nd fav for DS lol though i know it never gonna happen but still like DS said he is her eternal partner XD he also great friend that will support his friend love... but i wish he would have more screentime not just being the funny guy, of course he have that moment with his mom but he deserve more..but oh well there too many character to explore so someone need to be sacrifice but he still big part of the drama for me... just my opinion sorry for long talk of DR here since i don't wanna go to mt lol.. i think SW&BR gonna get marry first...they already date long time ago and now they resume their relation as an adult so it definitely gonna head to marriage right away without more delay....though need to convince SW omma since she always not fond with BR lol and always prefer DS but im sure she know BR is nice girl she once help and drive her..maybe she gonna act like how NJ dad acting not happy when Trash say he date NJ but behind him he actually partying he getting a great SIL lol... keep watching the preview and that smile they gave each other when she out of the door with pink shirt just toooo much sweet♥ i kinda feel it gonna be DS who confess first, that why the shock face of Taek that his love actually not one sided and DS might say since they just friend she won't do anything about it but Taekman gonna take the action since nothing holding him back anymore especially if he know DS like him back..just my guess as much im sad the drama is ending but at same time im so glad it end so i can finally move on with my life and stop being so obsessed with a kdrama OTL just this week and after that we party and then life move on and might avoid kdrama for some time XD though the troll writer gonna announce the next reply installment lol and make me hook again but please i wish someday Hyeri&Bogummy can work together again such a waste that great chemistry if the don't actually the whole cast have great chemistry especially my Ssamundong Ot5
aurora1205
My take on preview They are all smiley with each other Deok Sun's friend made a remark on it. "You seem so happy though why not just date with him?“ (Sigh I'm kinda sick of those friends of Deok Sun you know...) Deok Sun learned that they kept secret from her. (SW-BR?) Feels betrayed. Taek seem shocked and guilty like busted? Deok Sun seem to excuse herself for something ”we are friends (after all)” (She wants to stay in the same room maybe? lols Actually they both seem guilty to me for some reason:/) Taek confronts JH. Let us sail preview ^^

And for JH's development - he finally becomes more "human"? If episode 2 is about Taek and DS childhood, then perhaps episode 19 is about how childhood friends become lovers? Hahaha Indeed. Episode 1 is "Hand in Hand" and about family. I wouldn't be surprised of episode 20 is "Hand in Hand in Marriage", or something like that, and about the new families of the next generation. Anyway, just a delusional theory ... And our ship, dearest shipmates, is sailing smooth!
Popular Post lxands
3 hours ago, lovelyrainy said: Taek looks kinda shock(?) Doksun said:on " ㅉ친구 찮아 "... I want him to stand up and kiss DS right there "Theres no chingu here" hehe I want it too...but i suspect the preview clip is not in sequence. When she said we're friends she can also mean herself, TK & JH. I have a feeling she was telling TK abt JH's confession, remember TK wasn't there when JH confessed. I think she was telling how bad she feels because she loves TK but JH has to face them every time they meet. So I guess that's why TK goes all the way to JH's base to have a heart to heart talk with him. Seeing how JH chuckled when TK admitted looking into his wallet I goes he has finally let go of DS & moves on but I bet he will be touch & appreciate TK came all the way to talk to him. Edit:- Also abt how she told her friend "We're childhood friend" there's one possibily the friend ask DS how she knows TK *delulu mode on* TK might ride on the same plane as DS, and of cos he gets all clingy to her while she's working. Most probably he's in the 1st class cabin & knows she's onboard too & request her to serve him...make coffee for him and such...DS most probably don't to publicized their relationship since TK is a celebrity, and they still have JH to deal with. The last thing she wants is to be in the gossip column, Choi Taek is dating a stewardess... Also it reminds me of R97 when SW's boss ask her how she knows judge YYJ & manage to convince him to come to their tv program, SW simply said they are childhood friend, before YJ brazenly cut her off with we are lovers, she's my gf...
jungseocouple
I am not bothered... I am confident that taek is the husband and it is because of this haha episode 15 of reply 1997, shows that Yoon jae did cry and so did TAEK so no need to bother haha see so no worries!!!! haha I know that I am too confident with this ship but why not? all the scenes points out to taek and when it comes to jacket seen by team Jh... hahah I believe it is only a brand It is a PARA JUMPERS jacket and I believe it is not for pilot!!! It is just a brand ... So it is basically useless and just meant to deflect #teamtaeks mind haha but whoever won's JH heart... I believe that we should be grateful hahaha and besides we could always pair them... and who knows they might make another series!!! haha #suntaek #hyeri #bogum
