Episode 17:

Another long post... sorry, i can't help it. Some random toughts about the episode not included in the pics below:

1.- I think that the drama (writer) was trying hard to convince us that Soo changed history. And of course i think she did, but many things were already on the way before Soo. In this episode Yo blames Soo for everything, but in fact (as i said before about So) Queen Yoo and Yo were already ploting to kill Crown Prince before Soo or So got involved. BTW i cried when Yo died. I always liked Yo. And i hate the way Queen Yoo used him and abandom him at the end... he finaly realized what So felt...

2.- Did you notice that the death  song aka 꼭 돌아오리 is played everytime someone dies except when a king died (Taejo, Moo, Yo)?

3.- I love everytime our couple hold hands... that's why i always include a pic of their handholding

4.- I can't like Jung... the more i watch the drama the more i dislike him (sorry for Jung fans... i like Ji Soo a lot BTW)

After episode 17 everything goes downhill, so i tried really hard to enjoy the episode, but it was like i had a black cloud above me, so i felt sad even in happy scenes... now onto the episode caps...

So: What is it? You don't want me to be king?

Soo: I do not like it. However, I dislike being apart from you even more.\

I think the purpose of Soo asking him to write is because she want to learn his writing, that's why Jung said her writing was so similar from him in the last episode.

What a rollercoaster episode... from love to hate, cuteness, sadness, madness, pain, everything is here. At the end i felt exhausted. Just a few comments. it angried me how everyone but So tends to forget what an awful crime was Moo's death. No mercy for the killers in my dictionary, specially because none of the ones involved seemed to repent (Wook, Won and CR). My blood boils every time i hear Soo saying something like "her only crime was being born as a slave.", "She was my little sister." or  "Chae Ryung...was just a person in love." So excuse me if right now i can't be on Soo's team... maybe after episode 20...

Thank you @kdramawriter for your love call  here's the parallelism in picture for you (not sure if it's representative enough )

h0tgsgv.jpg

Btw I've found more parallelisms (if anyone's still interested for more lol) And if you guys find more parallelism I haven't put in picture here and in my previous parallelism post, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE just tag me like how @kdramawriter did. I will be very, very grateful if anyone willing to feed me with more parallelism, and please tag me because I may not be able to lurk here as frequent as before  :tears:

1) He always tries to cover her scar, but the true man loves her together with her scar (Eps 6 & 7)

usJ1AAm.jpg

2) She said she wouldn't change, so why is she afraid of me? (Eps 4 & 9)

CdAwwtX.jpg

Spoiler

3) The shield (Eps 6 & 11)

This scene of Wook shielding HS from whatever it was (sunlight? lol) actually didn't show in the drama, it was only shown in PD note picture. I don't get the reason why they cut this scene, but the writer most likely created this scene for the parallelism with the iconic scene of WS and HS in eps 11. My theory is, the writer wants to show, again, the striking difference between Wook and WS. Here Wook was likely shielding HS from the sun eventhough HS didn't need to be shielded as the sun didn't cause her any harm, plus the shield was too small so part of HS's head was still uncovered. In other words, Wook's action looked sweet but actually pointless, just like most of his words and action. Meanwhile, WS was shielding HS from the pouring rain which was really a serious torture for her weakened body and heart, and with a big Batman's wing shield that could completely shielded her from the rain. He provided her the full protection she very much needed, hence the difference with Wook's action before. I think the amount of coverage both shields could provide for HS represented the amount of love their owner had for her.

MMTww79.jpg

4) She took the hit to protect him, so now it's his turn to take the punishment to protect her (Eps 4 & 12)

xrhwGt0.jpg

5) Left arm for the queen in paper, right arm for the queen in heart (Eps 3 & 16)

The herbal med does look like wasabi :D poor WS.

u8BJWhu.jpg

Spoiler

6) The hands (Eps 6 & 16)

Both relationship were kind of forbidden, though actually Wook's one at that moment was more acceptable as HS' status was still a royal (before JM announced the king's punishment). With WS though, it was completely between a prince (soon to be king) and a court lady. But upon seeing JM coming on their way, Wook immediately released HS' hand and put his hands behind his back as if he was caught doing something inappropriate. Meanwhile, HS was startled upon seeing JM but WS took his time to carefully put HS's hand back to her lap and even gave it gentle taps as if he wanted to assure her that it was okay for JM to see them together, that being with HS wasn't something he should feel afraid or ashamed of.

MMEakKS.gif

54Naq17.gif

7) The foreshadowing question (Eps 8 & 17)

If only he knew what the answer of his question was for HS and himself. For HS though, it was less than a decade. Unfortunately for WS, he had to live for decades in a world like that, the world full of misery and bitterness where he had to strive to live, alone.

T8x4teJ.jpg

8) I will never let her go, then and now (Eps 2 & 18)

zzm7Kp1.jpg

Spoiler

9) The punishment in Goryeo era (@kdramawriter this one is also related to your post) (Eps 4 & 18)

Tw6Zbsk.jpg

10) When trust is absent from a relationship, there's no relationship (Eps 13 & 19)gMGwCzu.jpg

11) How is it possible to run away when her heart isn't hers anymore? (Eps 1, 7, 11, 20)

How interesting that we got the exact same line from HS in the first and the last episode. Even after living in Goryeo for years and going through so many hardships, this particular trait of HS stayed the same. Be it GHJ or HS, both always wanted to run away and just forget about their problems. But the truth is, even when she died and came back alive 1000 years in the past, she still couldn't run away. The root of GHJ's problem lied on her personality of trusting people too easily therefore she couldn't avoid doing the same mistake. Inside of HS, there was still the same GHJ who was fooled by her bf, only this time by her best friend. Even at the moment of her death, she still held on the belief that she could run away by forgetting everything. How could she expect to forget about WS, seriously?

WS is the opposite of HS. He always faced his problems no matter how difficult they were, he never thought about running away because he understood that it wasn't possible to do. He understood this trait of HS very well and tried to help her dealing with her problems (like when he gave her encouragement words in the garden and at the prison) so she wouldn't think about running away anymore. WS thought he could help her solving all of her problems, which he did actually, but obviously he never expected that in the end, he himself became the only problem HS wanted to run away from. He couldn't provide any help when he was the source of the problem himself, and so for the first and last time in his life, he had to let her run away for her own good.

Sorry to cut short your post. I just want to give some (lame) excuses in Soo's stead.

The post above points out that the scene CR was beaten to death is a parallel to the scene YH hit CR in ep 4. If we remember in ep4 CR was punished for her action yet the real mastermind behind was Soo, so Soo thought it must be her who should be hit. The same applies for ep 18, before reading CR's letter, Soo only thought CR was a tool in the game of throne. She was used and sacrificed while the masterminds behind the crime were still alive, untouched. That's why Soo said CR's only crime was being born as a slave. It was nothing but the consistency in Hae Soo character. Though she had lived in Goryeo for years. Imo, her unchanged desire for justice and fairness should be admired and not be hated.

(Just some random thoughts of mine)

Since the director doesn't seem inclined to change his mind on releasing a re-edited DVD/Blu-Ray, I've officially given up now and pre-ordered the Japanese Blu-Ray sets. I figure it wasn't meant to be and I kind of get that he wouldn't like to edit it for a third time. But what a waste when I think of all the cut out scenes which never will see the light of day.

As was posted here some time before, the first set will be released on March 2 and the second one on April 4. Each set will have extra footage of 150 minutes with interviews and BTS. There will also be postcards and booklets inside each set. As for what exactly the interviews etc. are about is not confirmed yet. But that's a good sign, isn't it? Because it could mean that we get some completely new interviews and BTS. I don't even dare to hope for the cut scenes, though.

Most importantly, it's confirmed that the Japanese DVD/Blu-Ray sets will be based on the SBS version!

Spoiler

So the only bummer for many fans will be the lack of English subtitles.

Right now there seems to be a campaign on amazon.co.jp until 1/31, so there are big discounts on the DVD/Blu-Ray sets. For everyone who's interested in preordering, now's the time! You can cancel your order later, if you change your mind. You can get them here:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_ja_JP=カタカナ&url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=麗<レイ>~花萌ゆる8人の皇子たち~

And if the director DOES change his mind and decides to release the re-edited DVD ... I'll still give him my money anyway.

On another note, I really want this calender with asong1101's SoSoo fanarts

The hope of a release of the uncut version, a movie special or even the alternate ending, looks bleaker by the minute, if not well nigh impossible, with the adamant refusal by the director to accept any gifts from the fans. Unless I am reading it wrong, to insistently disassociate himself from the work which won (and is still winning) such a strong fandom domestically and internationally, is pretty indicative of what he personally feels about it. As such, it is truly such a boon and balm to the heart, to see that the cast themselves still actively and unabashedly proclaim their love for the drama, the characters they brought to life and the friendships they have formed, which would never have happened without the drama that the powers-that-be seem to wish to erase like a bad memory. Regardless of whether we ever see anything else other than what was made available to date, I will always celebrate MLSHR for winning hearts not just from the story alone, but the chemistry and camaraderie onscreen and off, that is still very much alive today.

I really love you work ladies. I love reading your exchange of knowledge about this drama.

Speaking of a team, I am Team Wang So only because I am convinced that he character was a masterpiece. I am in awe to the core because the brilliant interpretation and portrayal. Even in these 4 past of studying about LJG and having acquired knowledge about him like any veteran fan, I still see Wang So as Wang So & Not even an ounce of LJG

Re. the focus of the drama, I still see it as Wang So centric but I see both main characters as one team. Both of them made sacrifices of a lifetime to protect the people they love and their love for each other. And for Gwangjong being a man of great power & as you it comes with great responsibility too as Spiderman has once said :). The sacrifice he made was necessary for greater good, for his kingdom & his people and at the same time for Hae So.

I also think Gwangjong knew that HS was not from his era because when Jimong told him about it, though you can feel his sorrow & yearning yet he projected a gaze of acceptance.

Though one thing that I've wished, if only HaeSo after the death of Lady were delivered in few dimensions, it could have been more epic. Eg instead of walking stiffly with her eyes so wide open, I thought if she could have held back her gaze a little bit so her eyes would appear more dull & as  an audience you can feel her melancholy. Anyway, she still did a good job esp in the ep 19 & 20.

I think it is quite possible to separate the performance from the character. It is more than possible to marvel at a performance and yet still have an objective perspective on the actions of the character being performed. Take KHN for instance. I grew to hate Uk but I was always in awe of how KHN was able to show Uk's gradual descent into a kind of prison of his own making. Every single step along the way we were shown that cloud of darkness overwhelming him.

For me it's the same with LJG and Wang So. You'll get no argument from me that LJG was brilliant and perhaps to the point where he did overshadow most of the younger actors. Wang So was a multi-faceted character that was brought to life by an actor who could do him justice. BUT he is still a multi-faceted character and that means flaws, hang-ups, mummy issues, tendency towards jealousy, and possessiveness. While he might have broken from his mother, he was still his mother's son... he loved greatly and hated greatly. He didn't communicate well. More importantly his lack of ability to think about the different shades of love created huge misunderstandings between him and Su.

All his best qualities... determination, protectiveness, loyalty, pride became stubbornness, possessiveness and jealousy.

I can't be Team Wang So or Team Hae Su because I love them both equally. No matter how good LJG was in the role and how much sympathy he was able to elicit, So did make his fair share of mistakes. I also tend to see Su as rather pitiful. She didn't really ask to be sent to Goryeo, she stumbled around trying to survive. She had men wanting her to the point that she was taking the brunt of their rivalry. When she finally gave herself completely to So, she didn't even know his priorities had changed and yet she went along with what he wanted because he had become her priority.

Yeah, I still can't take sides  but I understand Hae Su a lot better the second time.

Hello, Everyone!

After a bit of an absence from this thread, I’ve finished a re-re-re-rewatch of Episode 4 and have to give serious props to Park Ji-young, the actress who portrayed Queen Yoo. The emotionally-fraught moments she shares with Lee Joon-gi at the beginning of the episode – when he, essentially, places his kill at her feet and seeks her acceptance, in return – would be nowhere near as impactful had she not nailed her character so well. She completely committed to inhabiting Queen Yoo at her coldest and most selfish and never wavered, all through the series. She knew what motivated the Queen and was remarkably strong and consistent in her depiction of the role.

Some people in this forum and elsewhere (Tumblr, Twitter, fanfics, etc.) have expressed confusion and dismay at how a mother can be so vile. Lest people think that Park Ji-young and the writer created that character out of their sheer imaginative prowess, I feel compelled to state that women like Queen Yoo absolutely, positively exist, and their children are every bit as baffled by their utter coldness and narcissism as Wang So and the viewers are. Queen Yoo might seem like a gross caricature to some viewers and, for that reason, the audience may underestimate the power in Park Ji-young’s performance. Please know that she played her part to perfection, in my humble experience with people just like Queen Yoo. She provided an excellent, steadfast foil to Lee Joon-gi and Wang So and, in alternate world, with different domestic ratings, she could have (and should have) walked away with a Best Supporting Actress award.

Another character I believe is often wrongly maligned is Yeon-hwa. Contrary to most viewers, I like and truly enjoy her. Kang Han-na does a wonderful job with the role and the flint-like sparks between her and Lee Joon-gi are definitely worth a follow-up appearance for the two of them, in another drama or movie (preferably one in which they get to antagonize the heck out of each other!). As Queen Yoo is a sublime foil for Wang So, Hwangbo Yeon-hwa is a perfect foil for Hae Soo. Strangely enough, the last two are very modern characters, in terms of how they are written. Hae Soo is a 21st century woman who believes in human rights, equality, and the powers of forgiveness and love. Yeon-hwa is a 10th century woman who believes in the value of her intellect and the worthiness of her ambitions. She is someone who could fight for women’s suffrage in a different time and place. In today’s world, she would simply be termed a “career woman,” the kind of person who values independence and lucrative work, perhaps more than intimate relationships. She and Hae Soo both want to live on their own terms. Since they emerge at different strata in Goryeo society, they have different options available to them. For Hae Soo, a position as Sanggoong in the Damiwon is the most independence and financial freedom she can create for herself. For Hwangbo Yeon-hwa, ascending to the position of Empress is the highest goal – and most independence and financial freedom – she can create for herself.

As much as these two women are enemies in the drama, they actually represent different positions along the same spectrum of women trying to live autonomous lives. So how can we hate either of them? If Hae Soo wants forgiveness for Chae-Ryung, she has to request the same clemency for Hwangbo Yeon-hwa. (If I were to extend the spectrum to include Chae-Ryung, then she would represent the lowest social rung, and the limited options available to her to survive on that plane.)

[Total sidebar: Why do people hate the women in this show? They are all written so much more strongly than most productions I’ve seen. No one has to agree with Hae Soo’s actions (I, for one, do not), to understand and appreciate the type of woman she represents. And we are blessed with so many representations of women to choose from in this drama! No two of them are exactly alike. So many are layered, with backstories and motivations that are revealed, bit by bit. Do female friends betray one another as Chae-Ryeong does Hae Soo? Uh, yeah. Fairly frequently, unfortunately. Their relationship is complex and Hae Soo’s viewpoint is so unique to her that understanding her response to Chae-Ryeong’s death can be difficult for a viewer (myself, included), but the rationale can be divined (especially via fanfics ;-)). No matter how abstruse the drama’s later episodes may be, at least it gives us complicated women to analyze.]

A fact for which I have to commend the show is that the rivalry between Yeon-hwa and Soo is never about So's affection. They never hate each other because of his feelings for them. They are fighting each other for power, their individual paths to happiness, and the ability to survive in a cut-throat world. THANK YOU, SHOW, FOR NOT MAKING THEM FIGHT OVER A MAN! Thank you for crediting them with enough gumption, self-respect, and realism to make them fight over things more elemental to their survival than the ardor of a man. Thank you, thank you; thank you. In Episode 4, Yeon-hwa and Soo have their second confrontation (I believe) and it is a harbinger of Soo’s torture to come (also to be orchestrated by Yeon-hwa). The men, standing uselessly on the sidelines, are secondary to the women’s dislike of one another. The central display is their power play and the inability of anyone, save So, to intervene.

Even later in the show, the bargaining that Yeon-hwa attempts with Soo concerns the power and freedom that So represents to Yeon-hwa; not his love. Also, by Episode 4, the drama establishes that Yeon-hwa is not one who would be capable of loving So: his scar repulses and scares her. She cannot accept all of him, as she tends to his wounds, and while So hints at enough attraction to her to bed her, love would likely never be part of the equation. That Yeon-hwa hopes he’ll sleep with her on their wedding night is wishful thinking on her part, but not a deal-breaker for her. She does not become a harpy or seek vengeance on Soo, simply because So will not have sex with her. In this regard, she does not resemble Queen Yoo; Yeon-hwa is more clear-cut and direct in her ambitions. She needs a son on the throne to secure her position in the palace; ergo, she needs to sleep with So. Yeon-hwa invites her brother to create a final wedge between So and Soo, with Wook’s “confession” of his past relationship with Soo, in order to remove an obstacle to Yeon-hwa’s goal. But her aim is giving birth to a son; not having So’s heart. Any attacks she would hypothetically mete, to destroy Soo’s child, would also be to protect her own lineage, and not crimes of passion. (Queen Yoo, on the other hand, architected the death of an unborn child that was of no threat to her position or offspring, merely due to her jealousy toward the object of Taejo’s abiding love.)

A counter-argument could be that, once faced with the option to serve up her brother in exchange for So’s bodily fluids, Yeon-hwa grabs the deal whole-heartedly. Even then, though, her personal ambition drives her decision (and she and her mother had already decided to forsake Wook). Any pleasure she might hope to take from the interaction would be a bonus, only.

Toward the end, she is, remarkably enough, somewhat in solidarity with Soo: both women know firsthand how cold Gwangjong can be. Ironically, while their approaches to securing their survival differ drastically, in the final analysis, they are the only women who can tell Wang So, “No exceptions will be granted,” and have him heel. They are the primary partners in his life, and, for the throne, he pushes them both away.

Again, I am incredibly grateful that Yeon-hwa and Soo do not fight over So. They fight as women of disparate social ranks and ideologies whose paths cross with deleterious effects, due to the times in which they live. These reasons for opposition are totally worthy, in my estimation, and no small part of why I adore Yeon-hwa.

As a last note, Episode 11 is, and will likely always be, my favorite one of the drama. In this hour, more than any other, the actresses are allowed to pour their talents and their interpretations of their characters onto the screen and the total effect is a knock-out. From Lee Ji-eun to Woo Hee-jin (Oh Sanggoong) to Park Ji-young to Jung Kyung-soon (Queen Hwangbo), each actress is pitch-perfect and, together, they humble me. Around the globe, may directors and screenwriters give the gifted actresses of the world more opportunities to come together and deliver collective punches to the solar plexus.

The video is about about the japanese DVD and BD release in March. Joon Gi shortly talks about the production and Su's & So's lovestory and hopes many people will watch the drama. There's unfortunately no new information in it :(

Edit: I just thought maybe it also helps for understanding that the Kanji used for "movie" on the website mean something like video/moving picture on websites (動画) and are not the ones commonly used for (feature) films (映画).

Japanese Blu-ray Set 1:

r.580x0

Japanese DVD Set 1:

r.580x0

(Source: http://news.kstyle.com/article.ksn?articleNo=2061223) ---> Looks like they updated the official site, too.

First press copies come with 32pg booklet and 5 postcards.

I'm not going to lie - I will be high-key annoyed if the 5 postcards that come with Set 2 have the remaining characters that are missing (I do not want a Won postcard, thnx - Wook is more than enough). xP I wouldn't mind Soon Deok, Woo Hee, etc though...

Anyways, I still can't at Japan marketing MLSHR as a romantic comedy. I pity anyone who buys the sets blind without looking more into the drama, lol.

EDIT: Also, the site used to say 150min interview/making footage (at least in the graphics), but they've since changed it to 180min, so... yay?

Noooooooo! I am thinking of getting one because i am tired watching the mediocre copy i downloaded from a kdrama streaming site but what will i do with it if it doesn't have a subtitle.

On another note, I really want this calender with asong1101's SoSoo fanarts

AND this beautiful artbook from HAAK with Wang So's costumes...

I wanted a compilation of his works but not as a calendar because that will just be displayed for a year. I want something that will lasts because this drama is very special to me. I hope he will release something like a coffee-table book.

Found some higher-res images for the Blu-ray/DVD sets.

You can just make out the contents on the bonus disc:

- Special Navigation ---> I honestly have no idea what this is. I expect recycled footage though, probably just edited in a way to seem exciting or whatnot. Maybe something like those ML special eps where they had that guy explaining the history of Goryeo.

- Special Digest ---> This sounds a little lame, only because I think this'll be like a condensed highlight reel of each episode.

- Making Vol. 1-2 ---> There's a little more to the title here - I can barely make out the kanji. However, it's essentially the making aka bts footage. Hopefully, there's actual new bts footage and not just (old) footage/cast interviews.

- Japanese Trailer(s) ---> Guessing this is either trailers we've seen for the entire drama and/or the trailer previews for each episode. Though, if I had to guess, the Japan trailers are probably edited to be more romcom-y. ;P

- Korean Trailer(s) ---> Same as above, except without the romcom tint.

As expected, no sign of deleted scenes. However, this is from a visual mock-up of the DVD/Blu-ray sets, so this might not be the final version of the contents. I will, however, not get my hopes up, lol.

I am not even Lee Joon Gi but I feel flattered and honoured listening to the compliments Paul & Milla were giving to him.

I feel the same way about LJG's Wang So. I keep saying the whole time. 'Wow, that performance is a masterpiece!'. What amazes me more, he was consistent from ep 1 to the finale.
