 Yeah when I first discovered JH, i spent so much time in that blog reading all the cute articles. How I wish I can meet JH in real person too.

First episode review :

God of Trade – Innkeeper 2015 – First Impression

Sorry Jang Hyuk fans, I think he only appears from the second episode onwards, as the first episode is entirely a history of his character, Chun Bong-san. Bong-san is the younger son of the Master (Kim Seung Soo) of the Chun family business, and he hates having to walk long distances as a traveling merchant, like his father. Show also displays alot of how Joseon merchants work, and the merchant rules that they have to abide to.

The Chuns specialises in trading of dried sea cucumbers, which were very expensive in those olden days in Joseon, apparently. Their entire troupe of traveling merchants waited for three years for the trading to re-open between Kaesong and Hanyang, but their journey to Hanyang started off on a bad mark. The magistrate (I think), is out to cripple the Chuns, as they are the biggest organisation of traveling merchants in Kaesong. We learn in the middle of the episode that Master Chun’s god-brother, Gil Sang Moon (Lee Won Jong) borrowed some money from the magistrate’s half-brother, which is why the Chun business is being targeted.

The journey to Hanyang is further plagued by troubles, as heavy rains washed away bridges, and the Chun traveling merchants decided to take the risky mountain path, instead of waiting for the flood to subside. Bong-san slipped and fell off the cliff, but because he was tied to Sang Moon and his father by rope, the other merchants held on to the rope and tried to pull them back up the cliff. Master Chun decides to sacrifice himself to allow Sang Moon and Bong-san to be pulled to safety. Master Chun did not die, and is saved by a group of three traveling merchants, who’re from the Songpa Group of merchants. Among them, Jo Sung Joon (Kim Myung Soo) seems to be the head, and they’re actually traffickers of cowhides.

The Songpa merchants tried to strike a deal with the Chuns, because the latter are authorized to enter Hanyang to do business. Master Chun refuses to traffick the cowhides on behalf of the Songpa merchants, even though Sang Moon was very tempted by the extra earnings they could have made. Sang Moon dreamt of getting the Chun Group of joining the ranks of the Six Merchants (a social strata of Joseon merchants), so that they will never have to walk hundred of miles to trade. That was the reason Sang Moon borrowed money, to bribe government officials, in hopes that the group can have better lives.

I’m interested to see how the Chun’s business fall apart due to the uncontrollable external factors (the debt Sang Moon incurred, Songpa Group’s interferences, etc), and how Bong-san inherited the business if it was bought over by the greedy Kaesong magistrate’s half-brother. Even though young Bong-san may be lazy and complains alot, he has quick thinking and strong sense of moral, which will definitely aid him in becoming the God of Trade.

The English subs from Viki are taking way too long for this, almost a week already! Are they having difficulties translating ancient trading terminologies ?

@Prettysup don't worry. jusy try and watch KBSworld. Drama is sub. This is why I like kbs cause they have an English channel and their dramas are all sub.

I couldn't stand the wait so I went to dailymotion to watch the first two episodes with Chinese subs already, although I prefer English subs. Tomorrow episode 3 will air in Korea !!
