Veteran star KIM Hye-soo has wrapped production on her latest film, the upcoming thriller The Day I Died (translated title). From first time feature director PARK Ji-wan, the film completed filming on November 5.

KIM plays Hyun-soo, a detective who tries to track down a girl who disappeared off of a cliff during a stormy night. KIM’s co-stars include PARASITE breakout actress LEE Jung-eun, A Haunting Hitchhike lead ROH Jeong-eui and KIM Sun-young of MAL·MO·E: The Secret Mission.

Following her debut in the 1990s, KIM has remained at the forefront of the film industry in Korea, having racked up such notable credits as Tazza: The High Rollers (2006), The Thieves (2012), Coin Locker Girl (2015) and last year’s hit financial thriller Default.

The Day I Died is the feature directorial debut of PARK Ji-wan, a graduate of the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), the alma mater of Korean filmmakers such as BONG Joon-ho. She previously made the shorts High School Girls (2008), a Grand Prize winner at the SEOUL International Women’s Film Festival, and My Old Lady (2009). The film is currently in post-production and is scheduled to be released at some point in 2020.

Looking Forward to the Dramas of 2020

Source: Sports Khan via HanCinema.net

photo1125239.jpg

There is a line of dramas featuring famous stars and famous productions lined up in 2020.

It's the end of the year, but the drama industry is preparing for next year's dramas. As pre-production becomes increasingly common, there are a number of works that have already been filmed. We take a look at dramas coming in 2020 according to actors, writers, and seasons.

- "This actor is a must-watch"

The actor decides the genre of the drama. Those with probability and visuals are getting ready to star in new upcoming dramas.

SBS's "Hyena" is a survival drama about lawyers who represent the top 1% high class society. Rather than the intelligent and rational aspects of the existing lawyer character, it will show a diverse range of human beings involved in their interests. In addition, the casting of Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon makes the drama something to look forward to. JTBC's "Sisyphus: The Myth" cast Cho Seung-woo and Park Shin-hye almost right away. Aside from the fact that it's a sci-fi mystery drama, nothing else is known yet. Still, the drama is looked forward to thanks to the choice of the two actors.

JTBC's "I'll Visit You When the Weather Is Nice" features Park Min-young and Seo Kang-joon. It's not about a 'prince on a white horse', but the simple and warm healing story of a man and a woman meeting at a rural independent bookstore is the driving point.

"HERE" starring Lee Byung-hun, Han Ji-min, Shin Min-ah, Bae Sung-woo and Nam Joo-hyuk is written by Noh Hee-kyeong, whose scriptwriting abilities have been proven numerous times.

- A credible production team

Spoiler

Just like a well-written scenario, the drama is a 'writer's work of art'. 2020 brings dramas from famous writers.

The most anticipated drama of all is, of course, Kim Eun-sook and SBS's "The King: Forever Sovereign", starring Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun. Despite the cold weather, they have started filming and are getting ready to meet viewers next year. "The King: Forever Sovereign" is a fantasy romance drama in which a deity has unleashed a demon unto the world of humans, and that demon has opened the door to a parallel world.

Writer Yang Hee-seong from MBC drama "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo" and tvN drama "Familiar Wife", is attempting a very human-like weekend drama. "I've Been There Once" is the turbulent story of the Song family, beginning with divorce and ending up united in love and family, starring Chun Ho-jin, Lee Jung-eun, Oh Yoon-ah and others.

The writer of KBS's "Road to the Airport", Lee Sook-yeon, is coming out with tvN's "Half of a Half", a romantic drama about the relationship between an AI programmer and a recording engineer, starring Jung Hae-in, Chae Soo-bin and more.

TvN's "Hi Bye Mama" is a fantasy story about a Korean funeral custom called '49 days' and it is written by Kwon Hye-joo, who also wrote "Go Back Couple".

The book "Golden Hour", written by Professor Lee Kuk-jong, an authority on treating severe trauma in Korea, will also be reborn as a drama. Based on Professor Lee's vivid experiences, it is the talk of patients at the forefront of life and death. The drama is written by So Hyeon-kyeong and Only One, of dramas "My Daughter Seo-yeong" and "My Golden Life".

- Season 2, can't miss it

Spoiler

Due to the popularity of previous installments, a series of works to be produced for a season 2 will also appear. "Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim Season 2", which is set against the backdrop of Doldam Hospital and its real doctors, returns with Han Suk-kyu from the first season.

Another medical drama on its way is "A Wise Doctor's Life", directed by Sin Won-ho and written by Lee Woo-jeong-I. It tells the story of a hospital of doctors, nurses, and patients based on a hobby band made up of doctors. The cast so far are Jo Jung-suk, Yoo Yeon-seok, Kim Dae-myung and Jung Kyung-ho.

The second season of "Secret Forest" is coming out too. The cooperative story about a lonely prosecutor who doesn't feel any emotion and a just and warm detective is coming back this time as a story about the murder of a prosecutor and the truth behind it. "Secret Forest 2" is also led by Cho Seung-woo and Bae Doona.

The 10 Best Dramas of the 2010s According to the Munhwa Ilbo

Source: The Munhwa Ilbo via HanCinema.net

photo1130230.jpg

The Republic of Korea is the 'republic of dramas'. There are 20 or more dramas airing every week and they can be seen on TV anytime. Some smile and some cry because of them. The 2010s are not an exception. Numerous dramas flickered and numerous more stars were born. The pop culture team of the Munhwa Ilbo selected the 10 best dramas that heated up the 2010-2019 period in terms of ratings, headlines and expert recommendations.

- "Secret Garden" (SBS 2010): A fantasy drama realistically portraying a man and a woman who change bodies

Spoiler

This drama gave birth to the classic line "Is this the best you can do?" and recorded a shocking viewing percentage of 35.2% on the final episode, splendidly opening the 'generation of dramas' of the 2010s.

This fantasy romantic comedy based on the idea that the bodies of a woman and a man have been switched, the solid storyline, the outstanding directing of Sin Woo-cheol and the amazing performances by Hyun Bin, Ha Ji-won, Yoon Sang-hyun and Kim Sa-rang perfected the drama. Hyun Bin led the play's fun by naturally using unique dialogue, while Ha Ji-won portrayed a simple and innocent character by showcasing high-level action.

The drama is based on the romance of a poor woman and a second generation chaebol, but it deviated from the typical dramatic formula and realistically portrayed fateful love, which is what moved the viewers. Everything the characters ate, drank and wore in the drama sold out like crazy and even the OST topped the music charts.

- "The Sun and the Moon" (MBC 2012): The successful year of 'young sageuk'

Spoiler

This drama changed the flow of Korean sageuk. Unlike previous historical dramas that built up imaginative stories based on historical facts, "The Sun and the Moon" was free from ths controversy over historical accuracy, and doubled its dramatic fun.

As a result, it recorded 42%, an unusual viewership rating for a weekly mini-series. "The Sun and the Moon" also broke the prejudice that historical dramas are mainly aimed at middle-aged viewers. Placing actors Kim Soo-hyun, Jung Il-woo and Han Ga-in, who were in their mid 20s, in the lead, it drew in the younger audience. It became a stepping stone for the success of young historical dramas such as "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" and "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds".

"The Sun and the Moon" became the cradle for stars as well. Actors Yeo Jin-goo and Im Si-wan, who played the younger versions of the characters Lee Hwon and Heo Yeom, were put in the spotlight and have now become well-respected leading actors.

- "My Love from the Star" (SBS 2013): Plants the Hallyu and 'chimaek' syndrome in China

Spoiler

If "Winter Sonata" sparked the Korean Wave, or Hallyu, in Japan in the early 2000s, "My Love from the Star", a fantasy drama starring actors Kim Soo-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun, is considered to have settled the Hallyu in China. Chinese tourists flocked to the country in the wake of the drama, and Jun Ji-hyun's favorite food, chimaek (chicken + beer) became a sensation in China.

"My Love from the Star" was exported to China at around $30,000 per episode, and the Korean drama market expanded rapidly. Actors IU and Lee Joon-gi's "Scarlet Heart: Ryeo" was shipped to China at a price of $400,000 per episode, which is 13 times more expensive than that. Also, after the drama's success, fantasy has emerged as a main genre of dramas.

The love story between a chaebol man and a poor, but vigorous woman had been replaced by the love of aliens, vampires and goblins with human women.

- "Incomplete Life" (tvN 2014): My office life as a drama

Spoiler

This drama broke the tradition of dramas. Until then, most dramas had been engaging in revenge, infidelity, and comedy with the appearance of chaebols, doctors and other professions. However, "Incomplete Life" starred an ordinary office worker as the leading character and focused mainly on the daily lives of normal people. In the past, such a 'boring' drama would have been difficult to see overcome the broadcasting threshold. However, as the original webtoon gained great sympathy among office workers and revealed its specialty in everyday mediocrity, it gained 'sensation-like' popularity among viewers.

Viewers discovered someone in the way new recruit Jang Geu-rae (Im Si-wan) showed frustration at work, but somehow found a way to get back up on his feet again; they discovered themselves. Going in and out of the office, the meeting room and even the rooftop for a break with their passes hanging around their necks was all too familiar. It was this connection that got through to the viewers, as well as director Kim Won-seok's delicate directing.

- "Answer Me 1988" (tvN 2015): Back in the day...

Spoiler

There were a total of 3 "Answer Me" series; 1997, 1994 and 1988. As the titles symbolize, the visual background was the most important element of these dramas. The backgrounds reminded everyone of the past. The greatest event in 1988 was the Seoul Olympics. It realistically shows how ordinary people connected within this amazing event. The viewers used to get nostalgic at the visual reminders of the dramas.

It was also fun looking at the trends and items according to these generations. For example, the dial phone, the cassette tape Walkmans, the rice holder, and the video tapes presented nostalgia to the 40s to 50s and curiosity to the teens and 20s. 1988 is the best out of the three, mostly because of youth icons Park Bo-gum, Ryu Jun-yeol, Go Kyung-pyo, Ahn Jae-hong, Hyeri and Ryu Hye-young. The collaboration between Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa, and Kim Sung-kyun and Ra Mi-ran was also the best.

- "Goblin" (tvN 2016): A global connection with a Korean subject

Spoiler

This 'mysterious romantic tale' holds the record of highest viewing percentages in cable drama, with 20.5% in the final episode, and it became one of the best dramas of the 2010s. It depicts what happens when a goblin who needs a human bride to end his immortal life and a girl who claims to be a goblin priest appear before an Angel of Death with amnesia. This is because it is based on Korean elements and has a fantasy romantic comedy genre that connects with people all over the world. The drama's charm is that it captures the unique emotions and philosophies of the past life, reincarnation, karma, and the unique Korean samsara by using transcendent existence.

The performances of Gong Yoo, Lee Dong-wook, Kim Go-eun, Yoo In-na and Yook Sung-jae stood out. This drama created a national sensation and sparked interest in the Americas, Europe, Oceania, South East Asia, Central America, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.

- "Signal" (tvN 2016): The perfect harmony of story, directing and performance

photo1130225.jpg

This drama was like refreshing rain for those who were tired of romance. Writer Kim Eun-hee-I, who had been writing genre dramas such as "Sign" and "Three Days", was noted for her strong narrative and thorough production. The performances of Kim Hye-soo, Cho Jin-woong and Lee Je-hoon added to lifting the quality of Korean drama once more.

The idea of connecting the past and the present by radio was refreshing. The cooperation between a detective from the past who fails to apprehend a criminal and a detective from the present who is frustrated because of an unsolved case conveyed a warm feeling that they would not let the victims suffer anymore.

Based on the motif of the Hwaseong serial killings, the drama was recounted in September, when the murder suspect, Lee Chun-jae, was arrested.

- "SKY Castle" (JTBC 2018): The bare reality of education in Korea

Spoiler

It was the highest rated drama amongst all general service channels. The final episode recorded a shocking 23.8%. Then there were "SKY Castle" parodies everywhere last winter. It was expected to be an 'academic' drama about teens and their lives at schools. However, the drama packed a punch for viewers with its unexpected twist. It wasn't just about students and schools. The reality of education in Korea, which struggles with college entrance exams, was clearly shown. The top 0.1% education system, which no one wanted to believe, was just mind-blowing. Viewers were able to look back on themselves and their families in the face of parents who would do anything for the sake of those entrance exams.

There has also been no other drama with such vividly memorable characters like those portrayed by Yum Jung-ah, Yoon Se-ah, Oh Na-ra, Kim Seo-hyung, Kim Byung-chul, Jo Jae-yun, Kim Hye-yoon, Kang Chan-hee, Jo Byeong-gyu and Kim Bo-ra.

- "The Light in Your Eyes" (JTBC 2019): A shining youth with a speechless-leaving twist

Spoiler

This drama became a standard for well-made dramas. The drama, which drew attention from the beginning of its broadcast, also received recognition for its work, and left a deep message. The drama started off with the look of youth, which is so beautiful that it's sad, reminding everyone that there was a time when their eyes were blindingly beautiful with a dramatic twist.

In the beginning, the drama was about 25-year-old Hye-ja (Han Ji-min and Kim Hye-ja), who suddenly grows old due to a clock turning back time. However, the drama later revealed that it was all a fantasy created through the imagination and memories of an old woman with Alzheimer's. Kim Hye-ja showed the quality of an actor through the drama. She reminded many people just how precious life is through her narration, "There wasn't a single day that wasn't dazzling".

- "When the Camellia Blooms" (KBS 2019): A simple story without garnish

Spoiler

Dominated by provocative plots and excessive settings, it seems like a drama can't survive without that extra twist in this drama market. There is no superhero in this drama. But there is the police. There is no chaebol, but there are many people with a rich heart. Just like a winter-tolerant camellia blossoms, people living in the fictional city of Ongsan seek mediocrity. There is a daily routine in which one listens to each others' small thoughts, even if there is no particular story. There is a serial killer named 'Kabul', but the residents of Ongsan are neighbors who protect each other.

The drama poses the question, "How can a person be a miracle to another?" Even without any miracles sent from heaven, the little things that we do for each other can come together and create something miraculous. It is all the more welcome, as this case shows, that people can cry and laugh even without grand stories.

Film stars rush to small screen as entertainment horizons widen

SEOUL, Jan. 8 (Yonhap) -- Silver screen stars from the award-winning "Parasite" and other box-office hits in South Korea have been turning their eyes to the small screen and making successful moves to TV amid a rapid change in the media industry.

Cho Yeo-jung, who played a gullible wife of a rich businessman in "Parasite," the Palme d'Or winner of this year's Cannes, takes a leading role in KBS' weekly thriller series "Woman of 9.9 Billion," which premiered Dec. 4.

Her performance as an unfortunate woman who finds herself with 9.9 billion won (US$8.4 million) and tries to keep the fortune has helped the drama hover around 10 percent in viewership ratings.

Another "Parasite" star, Lee Sun-kyun, who took the role of the wealthy businessman in the black comedy, also launched a new TV project titled "Diary of a Prosecutor" on JTBC on Dec. 16.

Moreover, veteran actor Han Suk-kyu, who stars in the now-showing historical film "Forbidden Dream" returned to the small screen with the melodrama "Dr. Romantic 2" that first aired on SBS this week. He appeared on the first season of the series in 2017, which hit a viewership of 25 percent for its last episode.

The romantic comedy "Crash Landing On You" on tvN is gaining popularity for movie stars Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin.

SBS' upcoming weekend drama "Hyena" has been drawing attention for its all-star cast that includes Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon, both of whom have carved out their outstanding careers in the cinematic scene for box-office hits like "The Thieves" (2012) and "Along With the God" series (2017-18), respectively.

Experts say that the reconfiguring media industry stemming from the emergence of new platforms has encouraged movie stars to flock to TV.

In the past, film stars have worked almost exclusively in film and rarely appeared on TV shows as the small screen was regarded as the little brother of the prestigious bigger platform.

In recent years, however, new over-the-top (OTT) platform services like Netflix deliver films and original TV series through their global distribution networks equally and ease the barrier between big and small screens.

And the production value and scope of television have been rising thanks to the fierce competition in the streaming industry led by Netflix. It became easier for TV producers to attract bankable A-listers to the small screen.

"On OTT channels, all films and dramas have become equal media content," said an official from a drama production studio in Seoul. "So actors and actresses are willing to go over to another platform if they think a TV show offers meatier roles."

Why Older Actresses Are Often Cast With Younger Actors In Korean Dramas

By Joan MacDonald (Contributor) | April 1, 2020

Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon play competitive attorneys in 'Hyena.' SBS

Korean TV dramas often cast actresses who are older in real life than their leading men. Take the case of the drama Hyena, which stars actress Kim Hye-soo and actor Ju Ji-hoon as a pair of attorneys locked in a love-hate relationship.

Kim, who is best known for her roles in the films Tazza: The High Rollers, The Thieves, and Coin Locker Girl, and the TV series Signal, is 49. Ju, who appeared in both Along With The Gods films, and stars in the Netflix zombie drama Kingdom, is 37. The subject of their age disparity is never raised in the drama plot. What’s more important is determining which lawyer is more aggressive in court and in love.

Hyena is a refreshing case of casting, even if you consider that Kim’s beauty and talent make her a desirable addition to any production. Although the Hyena actors have a wider age discrepancy than usual, it’s common for k-dramas to cast female actresses that are a few years older than their male counterparts, and it’s not always because the plot requires it.

Mary Ainslie is an associate professor of media and communications at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China, and author of the paper Korean soft masculinity vs. Malay hegemony: Malaysian masculinity and Hallyu fandom. According to Ainslie, casting beyond age-stereotypes is a side effect of the Korean pop culture wave known as the Hallyu.

“One issue that might explain the lack of interest in age difference between pairings in Korean dramas (such as Hyena) is the general focus upon female-centric issues, which have always been a key part of Hallyu dramas,” said Ainslie.

Korean dramas include more than a fair share of what are known as “noona” dramas, referring to the affectionate term for an older sister. The dramas are so called because they feature an older woman in love with a younger man. The age difference is yet another obstacle for love to overcome, a drama plot device, because the family is bound to disapprove.

Casting an older actress with a younger actor is to be expected in a drama where the plot requires it, but it also happens when the plot does not. While dramas do pair actors of the same age or feature an older actor/younger actress couple, the number where actresses are older than their male counterparts is noteworthy. It also differs from what has traditionally been a casting practice in Hollywood, where casting can pair actresses who are decades younger than their male co-stars.

One recent example is When The Camellia Blooms, which stars actress Gong Hyo-jin, 39, as a character in a relationship with the character played by actor Kang Ha-neul, 30. Jung Hae-In, 31, starred in the noona romance Something in the Rain with Son Ye- jin, 38, where her character was meant to be older than his, but then he starred in One Spring Night with actress Han Ji-min, who is nine years older than him. In that romance they were supposed to be the same age.

In My Love From The Star, actress Jun Ji-hyun was cast across from Kim Soo-hyun, even though she is six years older. The drama I’ll Go To You When The Weather Is Nice stars actor Seo Kang-joon, 26,  as the love interest of actress Park Min-young, 33. In The Crowned Clown, Lee Se-young, 28, plays the queen to Yeo Jin-goo’s king. Yeo, 23, also played the love interest for actress IU, 26, in Hotel Del Luna.

According to Ainslie, the rise of the Hallyu aligns with a recognition of increased female agency in Korea, which came about through women being part of a new middle-class, urban-set workforce. As the Hallyu continues to redefine conceptions of masculinity across Asia, male characters in prime time TV more frequently present a female-friendly model of masculinity and gender relations.

“This is why we see such a change in the depiction of masculinity in particular, as well as a focus upon urban work-centric issues and female-centric issues, such as how to hold down a job and get a boyfriend at the same time,” said Ainslie. “This doesn't mean that the drama needs to be necessarily focused around age or relationships, just that for the female audience, who are, arguably, the main viewership, the character's age is not a key factor in their desirability or their coupling with the actor, and a more mature actress can also be more believable and relatable given the urban-set challenges they face. Obviously, there are quite a few Korean dramas/films that overtly tackle issues around aging in women too.”

Does casting actresses older than their leading men reflect demographics?

“According to Statistics Korea, about 17.2% of married couples in 2019 consisted of an older woman and younger man,” said Lee Seung-ah, an assistant professor at Yonsei University in Seoul. “So I would say placing/casting an older woman and younger man couple in the TV dramas is just one way to reflect society.”

At the same time, said Lee, it can satisfy both writers, the majority of whom are female, and audiences, the majority of whom are female, as well.

Globally, an overwhelming majority of directors, producers and writers have traditionally been male, but in Korea today 90 percent of the drama writers are women. Although the number of women working in the U.S. film industry continues to increase, the percentage of female screenwriters is less than 30 percent, which may influence casting.

“It’s the storyteller that defines what’s appropriate,” said Thelma Adams, a U.S.-based film critic and the author of female driven historical fiction that flips the genres of westerns and crime.

To date, those storytellers have been mostly men.

“It’s the male gaze,” said Adams. “It’s a simple answer and I keep repeating it.”

In an industry dominated by men, you get men’s fantasies.

“The fantasy is an older man and a younger woman. That’s the difference. Who is telling the story? When you have women telling the story, you don’t have that dichotomy.”

As more women work in the global film and TV industry and make films with strong female characters, the focus is changing. However, in Hollywood, actresses in their 40s and 50s still have a harder time being cast, said Kristen Paladino of New York City-based Paladino Casting.

“There are so many great actresses that have reached the so-called peak in the industry that should be portrayed in TV and film,” said Paladino. “They are stronger than ever and really should be considered for these roles.”

As well as focusing more on female-centric issues and downplaying age differences on and off screen, Korea’s screenwriters have recently created a host of complex entertaining female characters, who are not necessarily defined by their age.

Kim Hye-soo plays one of these characters and nothing about the age discrepancy between the drama’s leads diminishes their chemistry.

◇ Film category: meaningful get-together amid harsh time

In the time when the entire film industry was in a period of stagnation, the filmmakers decided to take the next difficult step with the spirit of "joining forces together". This year, the Baeksang Arts Awards is expected to be a rare gathering place for people in the film industry from the manufacturers, directors, scriptwriters, producers - those who build the context for the film - to the actors who are bright candidates.

The production crew of the most-nominated work, ''Parasite'', was mobilized to attend the event. With the lead of Barunson E&A representative Kwak Shin Ae, writer Han Jin Won, actors including Jo Yeo Jung, Park So Dam, Lee Jung Eun, Park Myung Hoon, and Jang Hye Jin quickly confirmed their participation. In fact, this award ceremony is the last stage to gather the most members of ''Parasite'' filming crew after 1 year around the world. The crew is expected to have a complete conclusion after a great journey with ''Parasite'' at the ''Baeksang Art Awards''.

The production crews of "The Man Standing Next", "House of Hummingbird", "Exit", "Moonlit Winter", "Lucky Chan Sil" will all be present and show their solid teamwork. "The Man Standing Next" crew will feature CEO Kim Won Kook of Hive Media Corp., director Woo Min Ho, makeup managers Lee Hee Joon - Kim Seo Hee, and actor Lee Byung Hun, who has been named at the "Baeksang Art Awards" for 2 consecutive years with the Best Actor award when winning in the Television category in 2019 and is nominated in the Film category this year. In the meantime, "House of Hummingbird" crew will include producer Zoe Sua Cho, director Kim Bo Ra, actors Kim Sae Byuk and Park Ji Hoo.

The names making the movie "Exit'' such as director Kang Hye Jung, director Lee Sang Geun, actor Jo Jung Suk, and martial arts director Yoon Jin Yool promise to shine at the awards ceremony with their presence. Kim Hee Ae - the artist who was nominated simultaneously for the Best Actress Award in both television and film categories - along with actress Kim So Hye and director Lim Dae Hyung of the movie "Moonlit Winter" will send their greetings to the audience together. In addition, Kim Young Min - the artist nominated for Best Supporting Actor Award in the category of television and film - along with director Kim Cho Hee and actress Kang Mal Geum of "Lucky Chan Sil" will also participate in the "Baeksang Arts Awards" this year.

In addition, actress Jeon Do Yeon and director Lee Jong Eon of ''Birthday'', Kim So Jin and Kim Hye Joon of ''Another Child'', along with Lee Je Hoon and Park Hae Soo of ''Time to Hunt'' - the first Netflix work to enter the Baeksang nominee list - were arranged to sit side by side. Representatives Kwak Hee Jin and Park Ji Young of ''Spring Wind Film'' and director Kim Do Young stepped onto the stage of the ''Baeksang Arts Awards'' for the first time as the producer and director of the first commercial film ''Kim Ji-young, Born 1982''. Female lead Jung Yoo Mi is temporarily absent due to a busy filming schedule.

Along with that, the awards ceremony has become more meaningful as it featured the participation of representatives from ''The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful'', Lee Kwang Soo from ''Inseparable Bros'', Ahn Ji Ho from ''A Boy and Sungreen'', Jung Hae In from ''Tune in for Love'', director Jung Ji Young from ''Black Money'', director Kang Sang Woo from ''Kim-Gun'', filming director Kim Young Ho of ''Battle of Fengwudong'', etc.

Regarding the new award, Baeksang Theater, two directors Park Hae Sung and Sun Myung Gyun of "Sputnik", director Bae Yo Seob and actor Gong Joon of "Human Fuga", director Shin Yoo Chung of "Incendies" will attend and bring home the winning trophy. [PICK] Report Cards of Stars Who Returned to the Small Screen in the First Half of 2020

By krishkim | Edited by Hong Hyun Jung | Translated by Kim Hoyeun

Unlike the big screen where there are fewer opportunities to meet the star actors due to the spread of COVID-19, the small screen became hot with the help of star actors. However, not everyone receives satisfactory results. Although all broadcasting companies introduced several new works, only a few caught the attention of viewers. Among them, we will look at the actors who successfully returned to the small screen after a hiatus and those who received disappointing responses.

Park Seo Joon – Itaewon Class
Park Seo Joon has have made several hits, including She Was Pretty (2015), Fight For My Way (2017), and What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim (2018), by present perfect chemistry with his fellow actors. His true value also sparkled in drama Itaewon Class, the work he returned to the small screen with after two years. Unlike his previous works, Itaewon Class showed a heavier atmosphere. But still, he managed to perfectly pull off an honest character who sticks to his belief. On top of that, with his appearance that seemed to have popped right out of the original webtoon, he started the “Park Sae Roy craze.” Park Seo Joon will now work with IU in director Lee Byung Hun’s new film Dream (literal translation).

Kim Hye Soo – Hyena

credit: SBS

Kim Hye Soo’s return to the small screen four years after Signal was triumphant. Jung Geum Ja, who rushes to the goal without hesitation and pursues justice in her own way, was a character that we have never seen in TV dramas before. Her unique personality came to life after meeting Kim Hye Soo’s slick and cheerful performances. She also opened a new world of “adult romance” by exchanging intense emotions with Joo Ji Hoon. After Hyena, Kim Hye Soo will come back with the film The Day I Died (literal translation).

Spoiler

Kim Hee Ae – The World of the Married
E35FC72E-FF71-47E7-84DA-541243FAD0B7.jpg

credit: JTBC

When it comes to Kim Hee Ae, even the obvious and stale affair dramas become elegant. Following My Man’s Woman (2007), A Wife’s Credentials (2012), and Secret Love Affair (2014), Kim Hee Ae returned with The World of the Married, which dealt with affairs. She captivated viewers by leading intense stories with detailed emotional performances going back and forth between the rage and coolness. It’s impossible to think how The World of the Married would have been presented a whirlpool of intense emotions if it wasn’t for Kim Hee Ae. The Baeksang Arts Awards, held on June 5, gave Kim Hee Ae the Best Actress Award for her three-dimensional portrayal of her role, Ji Sun Woo.

Choi Kang Hee – Good Casting
Choi Kang Hee challenged her first action scenes since her debut 25 years ago. In the comic spy action drama Good Casting, which she returned to the small screen with after two years, she played the role of Baek Chan Mi, a secret agent with a strong personality. She showcased a variety of action scenes, including a barehand actions in the rain, giving a sense of catharsis for viewers. And in the romance with Lee Sang Yeob, she added the fun by presenting her lovely charms, presenting a heart-fluttering moments. Although the viewership has fallen a single digit since the first broadcast, it has maintains its undisputed No. 1 position among all Monday-Tuesday dramas, thanks to her effort of trying something new without settling in the same place.

Lee Min Ho – The King: Eternal Monarch
Hallyu star Lee Min Ho chose writer Kim Eun Sook’s The King: Eternal Monarch as his first return in three years after his discharge from the military. But despite all the expectations he received in the production stage, it was a lonely exit. Aside from the anachronistic lines and improbable developments, there was also a slew of criticisms about his never-changing acting of Lee Min Ho, who played Yi Gon, the emperor of the Korean Empire. Similar acting from his precious works was obvious, and the chemistry with Kim Go Eun was not what was expected. Figuring how much the drama caught the attention even before the official broadcast with the reunion of Lee Min Ho and Kim Eun Sook, the result is bitter.

Jung Hae In – A Piece of Your Mind
Jung Hae In, who performed strongly in emotional melodrama, made a comeback with A Piece of Your Mind a year after One Spring Night, but faced a humiliating exit after the drama was cut down by four episodes. Such a result was even more painful since he showed back-to-back hit with Something in the Rain (2018) and One Spring Night (2019). Even to Jung Hae In, the unfamiliar subject of AI, the hard-to-sympathize character relationship, and the tedious developments became hindrances. The drama failed to grab the attention and broke the lowest viewership with every episode, eventually coming to an end with 12 episodes instead of 16.

[PICK] Editors’ Pick – Best & Worst Dramas of the First Half of 2020

By Krishkim | Translated by Kim Hoyeun

In the first half of 2020, dramas received two opposite reviews. While dramas like Crash Landing On You, which first premiered at the end of last year, The World of the Married, Hospital Playlist, and Itaewon Class received favorable reactions and recorded high viewership, other works, such as The King: Eternal Monarch and A Piece of Your Mind, showed disappointing results despite their casting of star actors. In the case of Meow, the Secret Boy, it became the first drama that aired on terrestrial TV network to record the dishonorable viewership of 0 percent.

Let’s take a look at editors’ best and worst pick. (selection made among all the dramas that premiered since 2020.01.01.)

Editor Yang Young Jun’s Pick – BEST: Itaewon Class / WORST: The King: Eternal Monarch

Spoiler

Credit: JTBC, SBS

It is rare to find a webtoon-based project like Itaewon Class. I may have an axe to grind, but considering how high the viewership of the drama was, I am guessing that a lot more people are thinking the same way. From the actors’ passionate acting, the script written by the original author, to the “underdog’s rebellion” story that anyone would enjoy, there are so many key points that made people fall in love with the drama. Yet, regardless of all these advantages, the fact that Kim Da Mi, my favorite actor, appeared is enough to make this my number one drama.

The King: Eternal Monarch is the most regrettable work written by Kim Eun Sook. The unique directing style, excessive product placement, unattractive characters, and boring narrative early on have surpassed the level that can be recovered by the attractive setting and star actors Lee Min Ho and Kim Go Eun. There were many improvements in the latter half, but it was just like locking the barn door after the horse has bolted. So these days, I am soothing my disappointments by watching Goblin on Netflix.

Editor Seo Hae Lan’s Pick – BEST: Kingdom Season 2/ WORST: My Holo Love

Spoiler

Credit: Netflix

Even I, who run miles away when it comes to zombie movies or dramas, endured to watch Kingdom Season 2. Though the second season continues the story of the first season, it was produced more like the Korean traditional historical dramas. Loyalty, guilt, the sorrow of the firstborn in Korea, and the twisted desire to destroy it if you can’t have it, such emotions are melted into various parts of the drama, raising the level of immersion. I hope you don’t forget to watch the icon of loyalty, Ahn Hyun, who bites the face of the treacherous subject even as he turns into a zombie.

The concept of My Holo Love is ingenious, and the way it was implemented is also quite persuasive. You can see the effort they have put into research on artificial intelligence and lifestyle. Nevertheless, I still chose it as the worst drama because there is no “taste of words” that I expected. Even in the scenes where intense emotions explode, the lines are too stiff. It is difficult to follow the character’s emotions since the lines hinder the concentration. So the moment when the main characters kiss and confess their love, the viewers are puzzled. That was supposed to be the whisper of love?

Editor Kim Won Hee’s Pick – BEST & WORST: The World of the Married

Spoiler

D4D43FE8-59E5-456C-808A-A2859F5D65E2.jpg

Credit: JTBC

The most thrilling drama in the first half of this year is The World of the Married. After giving off an unusual vibe even from the poster, the drama showed a shocking twist from the first episode, stimulating viewers’ peripheral nerves. The facts revealed as the story progressed were shocking, and Ji Sun Woo always presented gratifying scenes whenever she faced difficulties. Female characters who showed various performances like Yeo Da Kyung, Ko Ye Rim, and Min Hyun Seo were also impressive. But yet…

Up until the 6th episode, it faithfully followed the original storyline of the first season of Doctor Foster, boasting an extreme satisfaction. However, from the 7th episode, it slowly drifted away from the path and only seemed to seek stimulation by presenting an overly assailant-centered viewpoint. The initial freshness, which met the expectations, ended with a flurry of violent depictions, leaving only an awkward and uncomfortable aftertaste. It is a pity that the responses in the first half and the second half are poles apart.

Editor Hwang Hong Sun’s Pick – BEST: Hospital Playlist / WORST: Hi Bye, Mama!

Spoiler

AF9D1414-9EE6-432D-9935-10EFC4A81684.png

Credit: tvN

Hospital Playlist is the drama that makes people think of people first before the hospital. The chemistry shown by the five main characters was as sympathetic and warm as if we were watching our own friends. Jeon Mi Do, who made her first TV drama debut with the drama, showed such a strong presence that it made me wonder why she didn’t come out earlier. There were some criticisms that such good and warm stories are not realistic, but still, the drama delivered its sincerity with delicate and emotional portrayals.

While Hi Bye, Mama! showed s fresh start, the second half was just disappointing. In fact, Kim Tae Hee’s brilliant acting as a mother and her touching story that goes back and forth between the past and the present was good. However, the drama began to crumble in the latter half that dealt with Kim Tae Hee’s reincarnation. The key points that have grabbed the attention early on were buried deep by forced stories that only sought out for tears and frustrating developments that failed to speed up when necessary. Especially, the ending was so obvious that it was boring.

Editor Hong Hyun Jung’s Pick – BEST: Hyena / WORST: Money Game

92D0E00B-4201-4682-BA46-E68C73D63B25.jpg

Credit: SBS, tvN

Among the dramas introduced in the first half of this year, the most impressive one is Hyena, which gave birth to a female character “Jung Geum Ja,” who took a great step forward. Jung Geum Ja, who takes the bull by the horns in this challenging world with her own strength and takes the lead on both work and love, came to life after meeting Kim Hye Soo’s charismatic acting, presenting catharsis to the viewers. Her sexy “adult romance” with Yoon Hee Jae, a lawyer who lived a sheltered life, was a bonus.

Money Game, which depicts conflicts and confrontations among three people with different beliefs over financial scandals, is a case in which expectations have turned into disappointments. The fact that it dealt with an economic crisis, which is rare for Korean dramas, was exciting, but the slow development as they pressed the story of each and every character was certainly regrettable. In particular, it’s questionable whether the extreme setting of death should have been drawn from the beginning to build up tension. I rather wanted them to focus more on the economy.

Ups and downs of K-dramas in first half 2020

By Choi Ji-won | Jul 6, 2020

“The World of the Married” (JTBC)/ "Itaewon Class" (JTBC)/ "Crash Landing on You" (tvN)

The first half of this year was an especially bumpy road for Korean television. Although the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 halted some productions for a while, small-screen content came into a new limelight as a source of joy and comfort for people stuck at home in the period of quarantine.

JTBC becomes big name

JTBC ran strong last year with “Sky Castle,” which set a record viewership rating for the cable channel. And the broadcaster has further built on its success this year.

“Itaewon Class” kicked off the year smoothly for the network. Based on a popular webtoon of the same title, Korean heartthrob Park Seo-jun showed chemistry with rookie Kim Da-mi. The story of Park Sae-ro-yi chasing success captured young viewers and the series ended at a high of 16.5 percent in the ratings.

Koreans thought they had had enough of deadly love affairs -- until they saw “The World of the Married.” Even with the six R-rated episodes that set the series apart, the “Doctor Foster” remake quickly gained popularity and at its 12th episode outran the previous highest viewership mark of 23.8 percent set by “Sky Castle,” ending with a new record 28.3 percent on its final episode. As a result, producer Mo Wan-il and lead actor Kim Hee-ae were named best producer and best actress for TV, respectively, at this year’s Baeksang Arts Awards.

Not everything worked out, but drama powerhouse tvN also had its ups. Studded with stars in leads Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin, “Crash Landing on You” broke tvN’s viewership record in February with the unrealistic romance between a South Korean chaebol heiress and North Korean military officer. Taking the baton next, “Hospital Playlist” from star director Shin Won-ho and writer Lee Woo-jung was a massive hit despite only airing once a week.

Among the three major local broadcasters, SBS showed fair scores for many of its dramas, including the second season of medical drama “Dr. Romantic,” Namkoong Min’s “Stove League” and “Hyena,” featuring Ju Ji-hoon and Kim Hye-soo.

“Extracurricular” (Netflix)/ “Stove League” (SBS)/ "Black Dog" (tvN)

New writers debut big

The first sports-themed drama in Korean TV, SBS’ “Stove League” from rookie writer Lee Shin-hwa was a huge hit. The baseball drama captured even those viewers who have never been a fan of the sport with its no-frills story that moved the limelight from the players to the front office.

Scriptwriter Jin Han-sae of Netflix’s “Extracurricular” also shot to fame with the 10-episode series. The son of star TV screenwriter Song Ji-na -- who created some of Korea’s best-known TV series including “Sandglass” (1995) and “The Legend” (2007) -- Jin takes a huge first swing with a story revolving around teenagers meddling in prostitution and human trafficking.

Even ahead of the two smash hits, TV dramas coming from new writers have continued to catch viewers’ eyes this year. TvN’s “Black Dog,” showing the competitive ecosystem of Korean private school teachers, came from rookie writer Park Ju-young, whereas financial crime series “Money Game” was the drama debut for veteran radio scriptwriter Lee Young-mi.

Some may pass off the glory to beginner’s luck, but most of the new scripts were not actually so new. Lee had won an award for his “Stove League” script from MBC in 2016, but had to wait almost four years until it materialized with SBS. During the hiatus, Lee focused on more research and interviews with related officials to add greater detail.

Sometimes personal experiences became a source of creativity. Jin had revealed that “Extracurricular” was based on his own experience and thoughts as a teenager, whereas Park had written the “Black Dog” script from her three years working as a teacher. Lee, who had received critical acclaim for the realistic portrayal of economic bureaucrats in “Money Game,” stated that not only did she write the script based on her years of experience in finance shows, she also requested experts in the field to proofread the scripts.

"Kingdom 2" (Netflix)/ “The King: Eternal Monarch” (SBS)/ "A Piece of Your Mind" (tvN)

Stars shine bright, burn out

Several big-name actors, well accustomed with success, had their ups and downs.

Ju Ji-hoon and Bae Doo-na made successful returns in the second season of zombie thriller “Kingdom” on Netflix. With the story helmed by star screenwriter Kim Eun-hee, the first season, released in January 2019, took the Korean zombie genre to the global level, and the second season was acclaimed as having outperformed the first by critics and viewers worldwide.

Korean sweetheart Kim Tae-hee returned to the small screen after five years with tvN’s “Hi Bye, Mama!” While this was her first appearance on TV since her marriage to singer Rain and giving birth to two children, the show failed to meet expectations boosted by Kim’s popularity and ended with a relatively low rating of 5.1 percent on its last episode.

Worse for tvN came with romance-drama “A Piece of Your Mind,” starring Jung Hae-in. Despite Jung’s stellar popularity, the series maintained poor ratings of between 1 and 2 percent throughout its run and, in the end, was forced to reduce the number episodes from 16 to 12.

Perhaps the most anticipated yet most disgraced was SBS’ “The King: Eternal Monarch,” starring Lee Min-ho. Coming from star writer Kim Eun-sook of “Descendants of the Sun” (2016) and “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” (2016), Lee had chosen the blockbuster fantasy piece as his post-military comeback production. Criticisms on the farfetched story and poor acting by Lee and his counterpart Kim Go-eun, topped with excessive placement product, however, failed to impress viewers, as it finished with single-digit ratings.

SBS Drama Tops the Viewership Category with an Average Ratings of 11.6 Percent

by krishkim

Amid the overall low drama viewership due to the “trot craze” and platform diversification, SBS dramas surpassed the average household rating of 10 percent in the first half of this year, proving its potential as “drama powerhouse.”

According to the report by Nielsen Korea after analyzing the ratings of three terrestrial broadcasters (KBS, SBS, MBC), tvN, and JTBC in the first half of 2020 (from 01.01.2020 to 06.30.2020), SBS recorded an average of 11.6 percent viewership, surpassing the 10 percent mark and achieving an unrivaled number one spot. JTBC came in second with 8.2 percent, while tvN, MBC, and KBS followed the list with 5.5 percent, 4.3 percent, 3.7 percent, respectively.

SBS also topped the 2049 viewership, a key barometer of popularity and channel competitiveness, with 4.8 percent. JTBC followed with 3.8 percent and tvN with 3.1 percent. MBC and KBS came in fourth and fifth by recording 1.7 percent and 1.1 percent. In particular, SBS showed its potential by listing five of the seven dramas aired in the first half of the year into the Top 10 and all seven in the Top 15.

SBS’s race will continue un the second half of the year as well. First, Alice, one of the most anticipated dramas in the second half of the year, will premiere in August as a follow-up drama of Backstreet Rookie. Starring Kim Hee Sun and Joo Won, this human SF drama tells the story of a man and a woman who are separated by death, only to be reunited by overcoming the limits of time and space. In addition, Fly From Rags To Riches, starring Kwon Sang Woo and Bae Sung Woo, and Penthouse, in which PD Joo Dong Min and writer Kim Soon Ok have joined hands once again since The Last Empress, are set to air in the second half of the year.

MBC, on the other hand, has lost its title, “Drama Kingdom.” The last mini-series that has exceeded 15 percent viewership was She Was Pretty, which aired in 2015. As time went by, single-digit ratings became the norm, and even the dramas that recorded 0 percent viewership have frequently appeared.

MBC’s slump is even more noticeable since each major broadcaster has produced at least one hit drama that has dominated the viewership and popularity: KBS’s When the Camellia Blooms, JTBC’s Itaewon Class and The World of the Married, SBS’s Hot Stove League and Dr. Romantic 2, and tvN’s Crash Landing on You.

Efforts to revive the MBC drama are currently underway. Although the viewership did not hit the jackpot in the first half of 2020, it achieved notable results in terms of diversity. It is said that they have expanded the range of viewers’ choices by making new attempts such as producing a script that won the contest, 4 or 8 part mystery drama, and running virtual SNS channels related to the dramas. In August, SF8, SF Anthology series, which was first introduced at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, will air.

Jo Kwon, who decided to become a celebrity after seeing his mother suffer from debtors, cleared all her debts by actively appearing on numerous entertainment shows.

However, he confesses that he had to face yet another crisis early in his military service.

Jo Kwon said, “My mother was diagnosed with melanoma during my military service. It started with her big toes, and I was told that if it metastasized, she would have to amputate her lower body. I broke down. I couldn’t leave my base, and there was nothing I could do for her.”

“But I was able to get back on my feet thanks to Kim Hye Soo. She even helped out my mother. She hugged me tight and told me, ‘Kwon, you only think about getting discharged safe and healthy,’” he added, sharing their warm friendship.

Warner Bros. Is Pulling Out of Korea + Film ‘The Witch 2’ Production Is Up in the Air

by krishkim

As Warner Bros. decided to pull out of the Korea film industry, including investment, production, and distribution business, director Park Hoon Jung’s The Witch 2 will be drifting.

According to the film industry, Warner Bros. Korea is taking steps to withdraw from related businesses such as investment, production, and distribution of Korean films. It plans to clean up related businesses by the end of this year. The already produced films will be released within this year.

Josee (director Kim Jong Kwan), a remake of the popular 2004 Japanese film Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, starring Han Ji Min and Nam Joo Hyuk, and The Day I Died (director Park Ji Wan), starring Kim Hye Soo, and Good Neighbor (director Lee Hwan Kyung), starring Jong Woo and Oh Dal Soo, which has been postponed indefinitely due to controversy over Oh Dal Soo’s “Me Too,” will be all released in the second half of this year.

As a result, Killing Romance (director Lee Won Suk), starring Lee Sun Kyun, Lee Ha Nui, and Gong Myung, became the last investment distribution film of Warner Bros. Korea. It is scheduled to be released next year.

Warner Bros. Korea jumped into the Korean film business in 2016 when it showcased director Kim Ji Woon’s The Age of Shadows. Although The Age of Shadows cruised 7.5 million moviegoers and The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion drew 3.18 million viewers, the company faced a critical condition as Illang: The Wolf Brigade, V.I.P., Jo Pil-ho: the dawning rage, Jesters: The Game Changers, and Battle of Jangsari became a box office flop.

Also, various environmental changes, including the replacement of CEO, the COVID-19 pandemic, and HBO Max (the streaming platform launched by Warner Media), became the reasons for their pullout.

With this decision, the ongoing production for The Witch 2 and the remake of Intern became uncertain.

The film The Day I Died (literal title), which drew attention as Kim Hye Soo’s big-screen comeback project, confirmed its release in November.

Warner Bros. Korea unveiled the first poster of The Day I Died and announced its release in November. The Day I Died is a story about a girl who disappeared to the edge of a cliff with only one suicide note left, a detective who traces the case, and a witness who saw the girl last. The meeting between veteran actresses Kim Hye Soo and Lee Jung Eun, and rookie actress Noh Jung Eui is raising the expectations.

The released poster catches the eyes with Hyun Soo (Kim Hye Soo), a detective who is looking for traces of a girl who disappeared in the forest. The fact that her eyes are cut out of the frame makes it impossible to read her expression fully, raising questions of what she is facing and how she feels. Also, the copy “For me to live” ironically goes hand in hand with the title “The Day I Died,” drawing keen attention.

Kim Hye Soo plays detective Hyun Soo who tracks the girl who disappeared, while Parasite star Lee Jung Eun takes on the role of Soon Chun, the last witness to see the girl alive. Noh Jung Eui, who has grown from a child actor to a next-generation actor, plays Se Jin, the missing girl, and many actors with diverse personalities and charms, including Kim Sun Young, Lee Sang Yeob, and Moon Jung Hee, will enrich the film.

Meanwhile, The Day I Died is a feature debut film of Park Ji Wan, who won the Grand Prize at the 10th International Women’s Film Festival in Seoul with her film High School Girls.

The press conference for the upcoming film The Day I Died was held on Oct. 8 ai 11 a.m. KST. Kim Hye Soo, Lee Jung Eun, Noh Jung Eui, and director Park Ji Wan attended this event that was broadcast live online. The Day I Died is a story about a girl who disappeared to the edge of a cliff with only one suicide note left, a detective who traces the case, and a witness who saw the girl last.

In the film, Kim Hye Soo plays detective Hyun Soo who tracks the girl who disappeared. She said, “The Day I Died came like a fate. I felt like the script strangely zoomed into my eyes,” explaining why he participated in the project. She added, “Before I figured out the genre or the story, I felt destined to do this. It was a very special experience.”

Lee Jung Eun, who showed a strong presence in Parasite, plays a witness who lost her voice in an accident. She said, “I really enjoyed the works where Kim Hye Soo appears as a detective, so I wanted to take part. Most of all, the fact that this film is not just a crime genre but a script where sincerity and truth met intrigued me.” She also cited the question of whether she would be able to convey her character’s true feelings even when she’s not allowed to talk as another reason she joined the project.

Noh Jung Eui, who takes on the role of the missing girl, said that she chose this film because she could work with Kim Hye Soo and Lee Jung Eun. “There aren’t many movies about people my age. So I wanted to do well in portraying a role similar to my age,” she added.

The Day I Died is a work composed of a female director and female actors. However, Kim Hye Soo and Lee Jung Eun said that isn’t why they decided to join the project. Lee Jung Eun said, “It’s not easy to meet a work where a female character is well established. But this described female characters quite delicately. I think people who wanted that teamed up,” adding that she would gladly join works where she could be of help in the future.

Kim Hye Soo said, “I was attracted to the work itself. A sense of solidarity among people with no connection is one of the important messages.” She continued, “I don’t choose the works based on genders. However, it is encouraging that there are more well-made female roles in contrast to the past when the female characters have appealed to the public with their looks. More and more female directors are taking on new challenges. I hope that they will have more opportunities to speak out as well-prepared filmmakers with strong internal stability.”
