Korean Dramas You Must Watch If You Need Motivation In Life

You'll find relatable characters in these series!

As young adults, there will be a stage in our lives where we have to strive so hard to improve ourselves and establish an enjoyable career. There are times when we try to reflect on our life choices and ask ourselves what went wrong. Welcome to adultingwhere doses of self-doubts are supplied regularly.

As we try to keep our silent battles, portraying real-life situations in TV shows allows people to understand that what we are going through is valid. We usually get comfort once we discover that others are going through the same thing as ours. That kind of comfort can come in the form of a Korean series that's so relatable, that it's as if it was written based on our life struggles.

1. Itaewon Class (2020)

Who's in it: Park Seo Joon, Kim Da Mi, Yoo Jae Myung, Kwon Nara, Ahn Bo Hyun

Have you ever felt that life is just so unfair, that no matter how hard you try to succeed, it's the system and outright injustice that keeps on pulling you down? This is exactly the situation that Park Saeroyi has gone through. From getting expelled from school, the accidental death of his father, and his imprisonment, it was a hapless series of events but he knew that it wasn't the end. After his release, Saeroyi opened the DanBam Pub in Itaewon and soon met Jo Yi Seo. From there, he successfully got *revenge* and the rest is history.

Itaewon Class is a masterpiece that tackles the issues of inequality and discrimination based on social status. It portrays the harsh reality where our system favors those who are privileged. However, Park Saeroyi's story is proof that even an underdog can succeed through sheer determination. And sometimes, we just need a certain someone who will bring out the best in us and be our companion through thick and thin.

4. Fight For My Way (2017)

Who's in it: Park Seo Joon, Kim Ji Won, Ahn Jae Hong, Song Ha Yoon

Sometimes, you just want to go back to your childhood when you are not yet tasked to make ends meet. It's the time when you have more fun playing with your favorite toys than trying to balance your finances so you can pay your bills. Life is totally different as we grow, and the characters of Choi Ae Ra, Ko Dong Man, Baek Sul Hee, and Kim Joo Man can attest to that. One day, they were all just learning in the four corners of the classroom. The next day, they found themselves in the real world which seems to be a survival of the fittest.

Fight For My Way revolves around the lives of four millennials seeking for happiness and contentment through the fulfillment of their dreams. If you are a fan of the friends-turned-lovers concept, you will enjoy this. After all, it's also nice to grow and spend your life with someone who has been there since the beginning.

*** On March 31, Park Seo Joon has shared a new hilarious Instagram update following the production wrap-up of the upcoming season 2 of the variety show Jinny’s Kitchen.  The hilarious update featured Park Seo Joon sleeping on a chair, but what was hilarious was his caption,  “Summary of Seojin’s 2 half shot”, he wrote pointing towards the tiring schedule he attended in Iceland. Awaiting for the premiere of this new season. Though an official date for the show’s premiere hasn’t been revealed yet, it is expected to be released soon. Thanks to its distinguishing concept, the program was an instant hit, leading to a renewed season.   :doggie:

5 Actresses “Unbelievably” Miscast Cast In Their K-Dramas

Not all involve “bad” acting.

While there are times when it seems like a role was created for an actor or actress, there are also times on the other end of the spectrum. The stars miscast in their roles are seen as such for various reasons and are sometimes enough to ruin the watching experience.

Here are five actresses that were miscast in their series, according to viewers.

4. Go Ara — Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth

Many fondly remember Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth for its bromance amongst the male cast members, which included Park Hyung Sik, Park Seo Joon, and BTS‘s V.

However, the casting of Go Ara as the female lead and romantic interest did not fit in more ways than one for some. Viewers felt that Go Ara did not connect with the character, leaving a gap that was too obvious not to notice.

OPINION: Childhood connections in K-dramas; Decoding importance of cliched tropes in Lovely Runner, True Beauty and more

K-dramas have always employed the childhood connections trope be it in ongoing hit rom-com Lovely Runner or beloved True Beauty. But how do they fare? Let’s explore.

The childhood backstory trope in K-dramas has become a favorite among viewers, showcasing various scenarios where characters who have met in their childhood or early youth later reunite as adults. From childhood buddies smoothly transitioning to lovers to chance encounters sparking a realization of past connections, these stories explore the complexities of fate and love.

Entering a K-drama, you're often whisked away on a nostalgic journey, where main characters share a past as intertwined as tangled earphones after a minute in one's pocket.  Picture two characters, separated by life's cruel twists, only to reunite years later. It's the perfect recipe for the emotional rollercoaster that keeps us hooked for more but nowadays given how repetitive they have become, they don’t always click. Let’s take a look at 4 series sharing the trope on how well they work!

Could’ve worked without the trope: What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim

Lee Young Joon (played by Park Seo Joon) is a wealthy heir and the most sought-after bachelor in town. Despite his confident exterior, he relies heavily on his secretary, the incredibly efficient Kim Mi So (played by Park Min Young).

Mi So has faithfully managed his office for nine years, but she decides it's time to move on, leaving Young Joon in a bind. As he tries to persuade her to stay, he realizes he's falling deeply in love with her. However, there's a twist: Mi So is on a quest to find a young boy she was kidnapped with as a child. Despite being told otherwise, her intuition keeps leading her back to Young Joon.

Spoiler alert: The twist in the storyline reveals that the young boy Mi So is searching for is actually Young Joon himself.

Despite this revelation, the show maintains its overall vibe of being funny, cheesy, and incredibly romantic. The undeniable chemistry between Park Seo Joon and Park Min Young adds a sizzling element that makes the show thoroughly enjoyable.

However, the subplot of their childhood kidnapping feels somewhat forced and out of place in the lighthearted tone of the series. While it does add an edge to the narrative and reinforces the idea of shared trauma bringing them closer, it's arguable that the characters' cheesy and adorable interactions are compelling enough on their own without this added complexity.

*** Fight for My Way  turns 7 today, May 22. I remember the drama dominated its time slot throughout its entire run and the show topped the TV popularity index for three consecutive weeks. Also, it received acclaim for its realistic plot and outstanding performances. The story revolves around underdogs with big dreams who are struggling to survive and achieve success in careers for which they are under-qualified. Now, the series clocks in seven years. Park Seo Joon portrays the unassuming Dong Man, while Kim Ji Won plays the opinionated Ae Ra. These (2) were cute and had cozy vibes. Their support for each other during tough times is incredibly heartwarming, given their long-standing friendship. The drama primarily focuses on the friends-to-lovers trope between Ae Ra and Dong Man, it also highlights the importance of friendship dynamics.   :heart2:
