A representative of “Faith” stated, “Currently the production company of ‘Faith’ and Min Hyo Rin’s representatives are in talks about her appearing in the drama. When casting is finished, we will begin to film the drama.”

If Min Hyo Rin takes up the offer, she will appear as Princess “No Guk” who was captured by China but is returned to Goryeo. On her way of returning to Goryeo, Princess “No Guk” gets injured and Lee Min Ho’s character brings Kim Hee Sun’s character to treat her.

However, it’s not because she wanted to get a nose job or a double eyelid surgery done. It’s in order to get real-life training for her upcoming drama, “Faith,” where she stars as a plastic surgeon.

In the drama, Kim Hee Sun gets kidnapped by Lee Min Ho (“City Hunter”), who time-travels from the Koryo Dynasty era from more than 700 years ago. Her job is to cure the scar left on the princess’s body by an unknown assailant.

The title of the article is sure misleading. For a moment I thought she was getting plastic surgery. Haha.

'신의'가 8월13일 첫 방송된다.

SBS 고위 관계자는 5월15일 뉴스엔에 "'신의' 첫 방송 날짜가 8월13일로 결정됐다"며 "월화드라마에 편성하는 것으로 최근 확정지었다"고 밝혔다.

김종학 감독, 송지나 작가가 뭉친 '신의'는 고려시대 무사와 현대 여의사가 만나 시공을 초월한 사랑을 그리는 퓨전사극이다. 김희선이 여의사 역에 캐스팅돼 2006년 '스마일 어게인' 이후 6년 만에 복귀를 앞두고 있으며 왕의 호위무사 역에 이민호가 낙점됐다.

이민호와 김희선의 만남에 대해 연출자 김종학 감독은 "일부러 이렇게 짜맞추기도 어려울 만큼 캐릭터 싱크로율이 완벽에 가깝다"며 "이민호, 김희선은 하늘이 내린 궁합"이라고 평하며 드라마에 대한 자신감을 표했다.

SBS has set August 13 as the premiere date of its upcoming historical fusion drama Faith.

Faith is the comeback drama for Kim Hee Sun after six years and also stars popular hallyu actor Lee Min Ho.

The drama makes another collaboration for the famed Song Ji Na writer and Kim Jong Hak director combo who previously collaborated on the hit dramas Hourglass and The Legends.

Filming for the drama will begin on May 24 and the drama will air on Monday and Tuesday nights.

류덕환이 SBS 드라마 <신의>에 캐스팅됐다.

SBS 새 월화드라마 <신의>(가제)(연출 김종학, 극본 송지나)는 고려시대 무사와 현대의 여의사가 만나 시공을 초월한 사랑을 보여줄 판타지 멜로물이다. 김희선과 이민호가 호흡을 맞추는 하반기 기대작으로 화제가 됐다.

공민왕 즉위 원년, 치명적인 상처를 입은 노국공주를 구하기 위해 하늘로 통하는 '천혈'을 타고 21세기로 온 호위무사 최영(이민호 분)이 성형외과 의사 은수(김희선 분)를 '신의'로 생각, 고려로 데려가면서 이야기가 시작된다.

이번 작품에서 류덕환은 원나라의 볼모로 살다가 고려의 왕에 즉위하게 된 공민왕으로 분한다. 풍전등화 상태의 고려를 구하기 위해 최영의 도움을 받아 원나라에 맞서는 영민한 왕의 모습을 보여줄 예정이다. 더불어 원나라의 공주이자, 고려의 왕후가 되는 노국공주와의 로맨스를 예고하고 있다.

류덕환은 "처음 <신의>의 시놉시스를 보자마자 작품에 빨려 들어가는 느낌이었다"며 "무엇보다 김종학 감독님과 송지나 작가님 두 분의 이름만으로 강한 신뢰감을 준 작품"이라고 말했다. 또한, 류덕환은 "공민왕 역할은 거부할 수 없는 끌림 그 자체였다"며 "훌륭한 작품인 만큼 부담도 되지만, 결코 놓치고 싶지 않았던 캐릭터인 만큼 좋은 연기로 찾아뵐 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다"고 열의를 전했다.

“새벽에 떠오르는 태양이 밝지만 해질녘 붉은 태양 안에 더 뜨거운 정열이 있지 않을까요.”

김종학(61) PD는 작정한 듯 35년 간의 연출 인생을 솔직하고 허심탄회하게 꺼냈다.

“정오의 태양이 내리쬐던 때에 연연하고 있었다”고 했고 “아직도 ‘미몽’에서 벗어나지 못해서인지 사람들의 입에 오르내리고 싶은 마음도 있다”는 ‘욕망’도 꺼냈다.

김종학 PD는 ‘여명의 눈동자’(1992년)부터 ‘모래시계’(1995년), ‘태왕사신기’(2007년)까지 한국 드라마 역사를 바꾼 작품의 연출자. 90년대에는 현대사의 굵직한 사건을 드라마로 과감하게 옮겼고 2000년대에 접어들어서는 퓨전사극과 컴퓨터그래픽을 이용한 판타지 드라마로 도전을 멈추지 않는 연출자이기도 하다.

5년 만에 현장에 복귀하며 24일 SBS 드라마 ‘신의’(작가 송지나, 8월 초 방송) 첫 촬영을 앞둔 김종학 PD를 16일 서울 역삼동 사무실에서 만났다.

두 시간을 훌쩍 넘긴 인터뷰 동안 김종학 PD는 ‘자기 고백’에 가까운 말들을 망설임 없이 꺼내며 연출 인생을 돌이켰다.

한국 드라마 역사상 최대 제작비를 투입한 대작 ‘태왕사신기’를 두고는 “흥행 면에서는 참패에 가까웠다”고 냉정히 평가했다. 최근 ‘신의’를 둘러싸고 나온 표절 의혹도 명확히 짚었다. “우리 둘(송지나 작가)이 남의 작품을 어떻게 베낄까 서로 얘기했겠느냐”며 “그걸로 시작이자 끝”이라고 단호히 말했다.

현역 연출자 가운데 가장 화려한 수식어가 붙는 PD, 시기별로 최대 히트작을 보유한 김종학 PD가 풀어놓은 이야기는 진솔하고도 묵직했다. 오직 그이기에 가능한 이야기였고 도전이다.

그는 연출을 멈추는 순간까지 ‘현역’으로 분주하게 움직일 연출자였고, 어떤 젊은 PD보다 트렌드를 빠르게 읽는 젊은 감각의 소유자였다. ‘꼰대’가 되기 싫다는 그의 말은 그가 드라마 현장에서 도전을 멈추지 않는 이유이자 원동력처럼 보였다.

김종학 PD와의 인터뷰를 한정된 지면에 담기란 역부족이다.

‘자르지 않은’ 김종학 PD와의 인터뷰 전문을 온라인으로 공개한다.

○“송지나 작가와 작품 끝나면 ‘다시 안 봐’ 돌아서지만…”

-연출 공백이 길었다.

“‘태왕사신기’ 끝나고 리듬을 못 찾았다. ‘여명의 눈동자’에서 ‘모래시계’나 ‘백야3.98’(1998년)은 보통 3년 주기로 연출했다. ‘신의’는 5년 만이다. 35년 동안 연출자로 살면서 이번엔 처음 출발하는 기분이다.”

-특별한 결심이 선 것처럼 보인다.

“명예도 금전도 털어버리고 출발하자고 싶었다. 개인이 아닌 연출자로 다시 시작이다. 고백하건데 그동안 같은 패턴으로 연출해왔다. 대본 두 번 훑어보고 촬영장에 갔다. 매너리즘? 인정한다. ‘신의’의 대본은 5번이고 10번이고 반복해 읽는다.

1982~3년 때 MBC ‘암행어사’로 연출 데뷔할 때와 같은 심정이다. 사실 그 작품 끝나고 ‘나는 뭐든 잘 한다’고 우쭐한 마음이 생겼고 ‘모래시계’ 끝나고는 더 업(up)이 됐다.

주위에서 소위 ‘미다스의 손’이라고 불러주니, 나도 그런 줄 알았지.(웃음)

그 뒤부터 ‘백야3.98’이나 ‘대망’(2002년) 시청률이 생각보다 낮았는데도 ‘정신 못 차리는’ 상황에서 ‘태왕사신기’를 시작했다. 한류가 끝없이 높았고 드라마와 비즈니스를 결합하고 싶었지만 인구에 회자될 만큼 성공하지 못했다. 흥행만 따지면 참패라고 보면 된다.

정신적으로 말도 못할 힘든 시기를 보냈다. 마치 천당과 지옥을 오가는 롤러코스터를 겪는 것처럼.”

‘태왕사신기’를 끝내고 그는 자신이 세운 김종학 프로덕션을 떠났다. “경영 측면에서 누군가 책임을 져야할 상황”이었기 때문. 김 PD는 ‘떠났다’는 표현 대신 “지금도 고문 역할은 맡고 있다”고 했다.

-‘신의’는 제작기간만 3년이 걸렸다.

“대본! 나도 재미있어야 하지만 대본을 받을 배우가 만족해야 한다. ‘뭐야 이거’ 같은 소리는 듣고 싶지 않다. 2년 반 동안 작가팀이 4번 바뀌었다. 송지나 작가는 5번째 팀이다.

작가팀이 바뀔 때마다 처음으로 돌아가 작업을 하면 손살같이 6개월씩 지나갔다. 지금껏 나온 1부 대본이 80개 버전이다. 누구의 잘못이 아닌 힘든 과정이었다.

후회와 반성, 애증이 어우러진 작품이 ‘신의’다. 내가 갖고 있는 상상력과 시청자의 상상력이 합쳐진다면 모든 가족이 함께 보는 드라마가 탄생할 수 있다.”

-결국 송지나 작가와 다시 만났다.

“우린 드라마 끝나고 나면 ‘너 다시는 안 봐’하고 냉정하게 돌아선다. 마치 이혼했다가 재결합한 부부가 또 이혼했다가 서로 못 잊어 다시 만나는 것 같다. 작가도 나도 서로 좋아하지만 같이 작업하는 건 너무 힘이 드니까….

송 작가는 써내기 어렵고 나는 연출하기 어렵고. 헤어질 땐 ‘편하게 하고 싶다’고 하지만 그도, 나도 긴 시간을 돌아오지 않았나 싶다.

다른 사람과 작업하다 서로를 찾고 그렇게 돌고 돌아 원점으로 왔다. 송 작가와 일한 20년 동안 ‘신의’처럼 대본이 빨리 나오기는 처음이다.”

-MBC ‘닥터진’과 표절 스캔들에 얽히기도 했는데.

“이 나이에, 이 경력에, 우리 두 사람(송지나 작가)이 ‘닥터진’을 놓고 이렇게 할까, 했을까.

옳고 그르다가 아니다. 그동안 작가와 내가 해온 작품이 있잖나. 그 작품이 어떤 드라마인데. 상식적으로 베낄 리 있을까. 이게 (표절 스캔들의)처음이자 끝이다.

송 작가는 ‘국민작가’로 불리는 사람이다. 시끄러워지니까 ‘닥터진’ 원작을 찾아보긴 했다.

우린 다르다. 사극에 왜 꼭 주인공의 어린 시절이 나와야 하느냐를 고민하다가 아역을 빼고 타임슬립(시간여행)을 넣었다.

연출자가 황혼에 쓰러질 땐 자기 것을 복제할 때이다.”

-24일 서울 봉은사에서 첫 촬영을 시작한다.

“초초하다. 과거에 드라마로 명성을 얻었다 치면 ‘그게 차츰 잊혀지고 있나?’ 강박관념이 많아진다. 떨치기 어려웠다.

현역에서 뛰는 연출자의 나이로 치면 1위가 이병훈 선배이고 내가 두 번째다. 나는 ‘꼰대’ ‘노장’이란 말을 절대 듣고 싶지 않다.

이른 새벽 빨갛게 태양이 뜨는 것도 좋지만 태양이 질 때 정렬, 애정, 열정이 가득한 붉은 노을이 더 빛나지 않나. 최근 연출한 드라마에서 시청률이 낮아지니 초초해지기 시작했다.

그러다 툭툭 털어버리자 했다.

왜 정오의 태양이 내리쬐던 때를 연연하고 있었을까. 어떤 때는 ‘여명의 눈동자’나 ‘모래시계’ 이야기하는 사람을 한 대 때려주고도 싶었다. 하하. 나는 ‘모래시계 감독’으로 남고 싶지 않다. 늙다리로 ‘나 이거 했어’ 자랑하는 연출자는 되고 싶지 않다.”

○‘신의’는 킹메이커·판타지·로맨틱코미디 혼합 장르

-왜 ‘신의’를 택했나?

“역사드라마나 현대극에는 어느 순간 내 몸이 들어가지 않았다. 아직도 ‘미몽’에서 빠져나오지 않은 시기 같다. 여전히 사람들의 입에 오르내리고 싶고.

‘신의’는 한의사가 시골 보건소에서 의술을 펼치는 시놉시스에서 시작됐다. 시골 보건의는 내 눈에 차지 않았다. 차라리 징집된 노예가 한의를 익히고 탈출해 세상을 움켜쥐는, 마치 무협소설처럼 만들면 어떨까.

한의를 하려면 조선시대는 허준 때문이 안 되니 고려로 시대를 옮겼다. 미드 ‘하우스’처럼 무겁지 않고, 코믹한 이야기로 풀고도 싶었다.

타임슬립을 통해 고려로 온 양의가 MRI도 CT도 없는 데서 뭘 할 수 있을까 생각하다 무공과 연결해봤다. 몸 안의 상처를 태우는 화공, 얼려서 치료하는 빙공, 초음파 같은 음공, 정신치료인 염력처럼.”

김종학 PD는 “사람의 몸을 고치는 무공을 의공으로 바꿨다”는 드라마 줄거리를 얘기하며 양 손을 신체 곳곳을 대며 설명했다. 그의 머리 속은 드라마를 채울 다양한 ‘그림’으로 가득 찬 듯 보였다. ‘신의’에 들어가는 컴퓨터그래픽 제작비는 회당 6~7억 원 선이다.

-단순한 의학 드라마가 아니라 ‘킹메이커’와 로맨틱 코미디도 있다는데.

“아! 나도, 작가도 꿈꾸는 지도자 상이 있다. 깨끗하기보다는 정화된 대통령. 고려의 공민왕(류덕환)을 통해 보여줄 예정이다. 원나라에 맞서 나라의 땅을 넓히려는 영민한 왕이다. 최영(이민호)은 킹메이커를 맡는다.

공민왕과 노국공주의 애잔한 사랑, 최영과 현대에서 고려로 온 성형외과 여의사 은수(김희선)의 코믹한 사랑도 있다. ‘이뤄지지 못하는 사랑’이라는 의미로 드라마 제목을 ‘비연’으로 바꿀지도 고민 중이다.”

-주인공 김희선과 이민호의 캐스팅이 의외라는 평가도 있다.

“김희선은 항상, 지금도 통통거리는 느낌이다. 계속 통통 튀고 좌충우돌 하는 은수와 진짜 모습이 비슷하다. 실제로도 돌격자세를 갖췄다. 술자리도 우린 1차에서 끝내고 싶은데 희선이가 오면 2, 3차까지 간다.

이민호는 임금 시스템이 싫은 자유분방한 최영 장군과 어울린다. 그를 통해 사회 지도층이 사람들과 어떻게 어울려야 하는지 보여줄 생각이다.”

-아이디어가 끊이지 않는 것 같다.

“만화방에 자주 간다. 밤을 꼬박 새울 때도 있다. 무협지, 대중소설을 12시간 동안 읽는다. 짜증면도 시켜먹고 육개장도 먹을 수 있다. 하하. 젊은 사람들이 선호하는 무협지나 인터넷 소설도 본다.

요즘은 ‘불후의 명곡’을 챙겨 본다. 샤이니의 태민이가 ‘마포종점’을 재해석하는 걸 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 태민이가 태어나기 전 나온 노래인데 그걸 버리지 않고 진화시킨다. 본방을 챙겨보고 일주일 자유이용권을 사서 매일 다시 본다.

알리의 팔색조 같은 보컬에 빠져있었는데 요즘엔 에일리가 나왔더라. 태풍처럼 몰아치는 가창력이 놀랍다.

이제 소녀시대부터 FT아일랜드까지 계보를 꿰고 있다. 드라마에도 ‘불후의 명곡’처럼 옛것과 새것의 장점을 섞어보고 싶다. 나이는 열정이 있느냐, 없느냐로 결정된다. 누군가 나에게 나이를 물으면 ‘나이 없다’고 답한다. 하하.”

김종학 PD는 “오늘이 마지막 촬영이라 생각하고 현장에 나가고 있다”고 했다. “공장에서 똑같이 찍어내 시장에서 5만원에 파는 도자기가 아니라 장인의 수공예품처럼 드라마를 만들고 싶다”고도 했다.

숱한 화제작을 만들어놓고도 “선수가 되기 싫다”고 말하는 깅종학 PD가 ‘신의’에서 보여줄 새로운 세계는 8월 안방극장에서 확인할 수 있다.
