Lee Jung Jae has been voted the most notable film actor of 2022.

From November 7th to 24th, Gallup Korea asked 1,771 people aged 13 and older to vote for the two most notable actors of 2022. And Hunt’s Lee Jung Jae took the top spot with a score of 34.4 percent.

The actor won rave reviews for producing, screenwriting and starring in his action movie Hunt. He debuted in 1993 with Dinosaur Teacher and rose to fame through his 1995 TV series SBS’ Sandglass as the legendary bodyguard Baek Jae Hee.

Then he focused his career mostly in movies until he skyrocketed to global stardom for his role Ki Hoon in Netflix’s Squid Game. He is currently set to star in Disney’s upcoming Star Wars series ‘The Acolyte.’

The second place went to Ma Dong Seok (18.8%). He received much love as beast detective Ma Seok Do in movie The Roundup, which was the only movie that surpassed 10 million movie-goers this year. He previously revealed that he already had eight scenarios in mind for The Outlaws franchise, which he would unravel one by one through the films. The first and second installments were released in 2017 and 2022, respectively, and the third installment is set to premiere in 2023.

SEOUL, Dec. 27 (Yonhap) -- Hit Netflix series "Squid Game" director Hwang Dong-hyuk and lead star Lee Jung-jae on Tuesday received South Korea's highest national cultural medal for their contribution to the country's content industry, the presidential office said.

President Yoon Suk Yeol presented the Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit, the highest class of South Korean cultural decoration, to Hwang and Lee at his office in Seoul, commending them for their role in the national film industry.

In September, Hwang and Lee won the awards for best director and best actor in a drama series, respectively, at the 74th Emmy awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

Earlier, Yoon sent a congratulatory message for Hwang, saying that his "fierce efforts and talent," as displayed over the course of his career through films such as "Silenced" and "Miss Granny," led to the Emmy award.

In a separate message to Lee, Yoon said his "remarkable performance" merged his character and the hearts of viewers. (END)

ZAPZEE’s Choice: The 10 Most Popular & Trending South Korean Stars of 2022

By HANA LEE | Edited by Hong Hyun Jung | Translated by Hana Lee

The editors at ZAPZEE have rounded up a list of stars who received the most love and support in 2022.

Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin
Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin garnered much attention as they tied the knot last March after dating for about a year. The couple made headlines every time they gave an update on their relationship, including their marriage, honeymoon, pregnancy and child delivery. The pair also received great love through their acting projects. Son Ye Jin’s Thirty-Nine is one of the few successful JTBC dramas released this year, and Hyun Bin’s Confidential Assignment 2: International is staying at the fourth-most grossed film at the box office to date.

Son Suk Ku
Son Suk Ku rose from obscurity to superstardom through two acting projects this year. He received favorable reviews for his role as mysterious yet charming Mr. Gu in My Liberation Notes, and continued his hot streak with The Roundup to cement his position as the lead actor. It is notable that he is attracting many fans with his masculine charms while bucking the trend where pretty-looking actors are favored.

Kim Tae Ri
Kim Tae Ri received great love this spring for her role as Na Hui Do in Twenty-Five Twenty-One. She perfectly pulled off the bright and energetic teen character even at the age of 30 and received rave reviews for her onscreen romance with Nam Joo Hyuk and bickering friendship with Bona. The role earned her Best TV Actress award at the 58th Baeksang Arts Awards, and her next projects — titled The Devil (literal title) and Jeong Nyeon (literal title) — are already garnering a lot of attention.

Ma Dong Seok
The Roundup, the only 2022 movie that attracted over 10 million viewers, is a film that made Ma Dong Seok become a brand in the movie industry. With his powerful punch and sense of humor, the movie gave vicarious satisfaction to viewers and helped the theater industry bounce back from the pandemic. In addition, he proved himself to be a brilliant all-around actor who can produce, direct and write a movie. He recently walked down the aisle with her long-time lover Ye Jung Hwah amid many blessings.

Park Eun Bin
If it weren’t for Park Eun Bin, Extraordinary Attorney Woo would not be so successful. Through Hot Stove League, Do you like Brahms? and The King’s Affection, she successfully transitioned from a child actor to a lead actor and gave a brilliant performance as autistic lawyer Woo Young Woo in her latest series. Her passionate performance in the drama made the story relatable and sparked societal discussions on various spectrum disorders.

Lee Jung Jae
0AB4DAB1-861F-4D11-ACAD-551CA2127A5D.jpg
Lee Jung Jae, who rose to global stardom last year through Squid Game, surprised everyone with his directorial debut film named Hunt this year. He showed off his decent directing skills and sent many fans into a frenzy by passionately promoting his film with his longtime friend Jung Woo Sung. Hunt broke even, and he won the Best New Director Award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. He is currently filming the Star Wars prequel The Acolyte.

Kim Go Eun
Kim Go Eun continued her lucky streak with Little Women following Yumi’s Cells Season 2. She showed her outstanding performance in Yumi’s Cells 2, contributing to increasing the number of TVING’s paid subscribers, and led Little Women by brilliantly portraying the complex emotions of In Ju. She received the Best Actress Award for her Yumi’s Cells role at the 1st Blue Dragon Series Awards.

Park Hae Il

Well-known as one of the gifted actors, Park Hae Il spent this year with great public popularity. He received much love for creating a heartbreaking romance with Tang Wei in Park Chan Wook’s Decision to Leave, and his other 2022 movie, Hansan: Rising Dragon, went strong at the domestic box office, generating countless memes. The period movie is currently listed as the third most grossed South Korean film released in 2022.

Kim Hye Soo
9A7871F1-EE9A-4CBD-8AF1-C8B087B438C6.jpg
Who else will there be but Kim Hye Soo who has both talent and star power in her 50s? She is one of the few actors who can make any role or project great. This year, she captivated viewers with her performance in Juvenile Justice and Under the Queen’s Umbrella.  Both dramas of decent qualities won many hearts and proved her to be an irreplaceable actress in the film and TV industry.

Song Joong Ki
Nobody seems to be wrapping up the year 2022 in greater success than Song Joong Ki. Creating buzz even before its premiere, Reborn Rich  achieved immense success beyond expectations. The recent hit series overtook SKY Castle and became the second highest-rated drama in JTBC history. All eyes are on whether Song Joong Ki will turn his next project into another drama sensation following the success of Vincenzo and Reborn Rich.

Hero attracted over 1 million moviegoers on the eighth day of its December 21st release. However, whether the movie will break even by pulling in another 3.5 million viewers remains unclear, as Avatar: The Way of Water is staying strong at the top of the Korean box office. Only eight South Korean films released in 2022 broke even, as most of them were dethroned by Hollywood blockbusters released around the same time during the pandemic. Here, we rounded up the eight movies that broke even and made profits this year. (The number of audiences is based on the data collected on December 27th.)

Park Chan Wook’s Decision to Leave brought in exactly 1,893,301 spectators and reached the break-even point of 1.2 million people. Competing with Top Gun: Maverick and Thor: Love and Thunder, the movie sparked a rewatch craze among viewers.

Go Kyung Pyo and Lee Yi Kyung’s 6/45 attracted a total of 1,980,773 audiences and reached the break-even point of 160 million people. Although it did not garner much attention before its release, the positive word of mouth and its lightly amusing comedy drew audiences to theaters after its box office debut.

The highly anticipated sequel of The Witch — The Witch: Part 2 The Other One — drew in 2,806,501 people in audience and reached the break-even point of 2 million viewers. Now all eyes are on whether it will get a third installment or not.

The Night Owl, starring Yoo Hae Jin and Ryu Jun Yeol, is the only film released this fall that broke even. The period film registered a total of 3,136,826 people in cinemas, surpassing the break-even point of 2.1 million people. According to film reports, the flick is currently sailing smoothly at the box office.

Lee Jung Jae’s directorial debut film Hunt surpassed 4.2 million ticket sales and broke even just 31 days after its release. The flick attracted much attention as Lee Jung Jae and Jung Woo Sung actively promoted their co-starring movie. A total of 4,352,394 people watched the movie.

Confidential Assignment‘s sequel had the Thanksgiving box office all to itself. It made profits by registering more than 3.5 million moviegoers on its seventh day of release. As it recorded a cumulative audience of 6,982,840 people, fans are hoping for its third installment.

Following Roaring Currents, Hansan: Rising Dragon is the Korean blockbuster film that reached the break-even point of 6 million viewers. It luckily pulled in 7,264,936 people and received favorable reviews from both critics and audiences. Noryang: The Sea of Death, the third installment of the Yi Sun Sin trilogy, is slated for its release in 2023.

The Roundup was the top-grossing film of this year. It became the only movie that hit the 10-million mark by attracting 12,693,322 viewers. The film made huge profits as its initial break-even point was only 1.5 million viewers. Its success was all thanks to the brilliant release strategy and positive word of mouth.

The list awards pioneering figures who “lead change and innovation,” according to the company Tuesday.

CJ ENM has compiled the list since 2020, selecting and awarding people who have presented a “new vision” for the culture and entertainment industries based on the originality of their works. “Visionaries” are defined as people who predict the future of the entertainment industry.

CJ ENM said Tuesday that the company plans to hold an offline awards ceremony at the beginning of the year.

The people on the list were selected after a “balanced evaluation” process of quantitative data, expert reviews and global indicators, the company said in a press release Tuesday. The five criteria for selection are performance, cross-boundary power, change of frame of thinking, creating new genres or characters and original creativity and global influence.

About 60 CJ ENM employees and experts with “professional insight” on content production and business participated in the screening and review process. Big data was also used, according to CJ ENM.

SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Yonhap) – Actor Lee Jung-jae, the star of Netflix sensation “Squid Game,” has won the Korea Image Stepping Stone Award from the Seoul-based non-profit Corea Image Communication Institute (CICI).

In the awards ceremony that took place Wednesday at InterContinental Seoul Coex, actor Lee gave his acceptance speech online, saying, “Never there is any free lunch in life.” He added, “Everything that happens in our lives counts, and they pile on top of each other to eventually bestow an opportunity to shine.”

The 2023 Korea Image Award, which is presented by the CICI annually, is an award won by figures whose efforts to promote Korea abroad have been widely acknowledged. Actor Lee won the Award for contributing to improving the global image of Korea by winning the Prime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in the Netflix-aired smash hit series “Squid Game” and also making a directorial debut with his film “Hunt” this year.

Looking back, the veteran actor, who is currently in the U.S. for filming Disney+’s “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte,” said that as he received the Emmy Award, he “absolutely could not believe this is happening” to him, and “it even felt unreal.” He added, “the Award gave me an awakening that I should make every step of my career with care and thoughtfulness as there will be a greater number of international audiences who will be tracking down the Korean content.”

Former figure skating star Kim Yu-na and teen swimmer Hwang Sung-woo attended the Awards ceremony, winning the Korea Image Cornerstone Award for her incessant contribution to enhancing the global image of Korea and the Korea Image Budding Youth Award for young talents under 20, respectively.

In her acceptance speech, Kim said, “I was so gratified to have formerly won the Korea Image Budding Youth Award in 2008, and now I am standing here to win the Cornerstone Award.” She chose “when I won the gold medal at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics” as the best moment in her figure skating career.

Swimmer Hwang, who set an Asian record in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, said, “I am looking to make more record-breaking performances and medals,” adding, “I would like to outgrow myself as an icon of Korean swimmer.”

Along with these three winners, “EURO Fashion House” won the Korea Image Bridge Award as a foreign enterprise that contributed to promoting Korean culture abroad with fashion. The U.K., Italy, France, and EU Ambassadors to South Korea participated in the ceremony to win the Award.

Along with the award winners listed above, Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin, CJ Group Chairman Sohn Kyung-shik, and the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip Goldberg also participated in the awards ceremony. (END)

Lee Jung-jae, the star of Netflix's global hit series "Squid Game," was named Best New Filmmaker at 2022 Hawaii Film Critics Society Awards for his feature directorial debut "Hunt."

Set in the turbulent 1980s, the action-packed film centers on two rival agents, Park Pyong-ho (Lee) and Kim Jung-do (Jung Woo-sung), who are tasked with uncovering a North Korean spy inside the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA). They investigate each other in the process of discovering a larger plot to assassinate the president.

The film premiered at the non-competition Midnight Screening section of the 75th Cannes Film Festival. It was a commercial success and garnered critical acclaim, surpassing 4 million in ticket sales here and earning Lee best new filmmaker prizes at multiple awards including the Blue Dragon Film Awards in November.

Last year, he was selected as the recipient of the Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit for being the first Korean actor to win awards for best actor in a drama series at the 27th Critics Choice Award and 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. Earlier this month, he received the Korea Image Stepping Stone Award from Corea Image Communication Institute.

Up next, Lee will be starring in the Disney+ series "The Acolyte," part of the Star Wars franchise.

Lee Jung Jae describes his busy 2023 schedule + when he'll start filming 'Squid Game 2'

Actor Lee Jung Jae, who is currently in London, the United Kingdom on the set of Disney's 'Star Wars: The Acolyte', sent his greetings over to his Korean fans in a recent interview with Ilgan Sports.

The star, who began filming for 'Star Wars: The Acolyte' at the end of September last year, will be spending a busy year packed with one project after another in 2023.

First, on his first project with Disney, Lee Jung Jae said, "I was told not to talk about it as much as possible. It seems that filming will run until March or April. I actually felt that in some ways, filming sets in Korea are actually more efficient. There are many aspects of the work which are similar here and in Korea, but I feel that there are areas where the Korean method is more efficient. Of course, there are aspects I am learning from as well."

Next, Lee Jung Jae dished on another project he is set to work on soon, a spin-off series titled 'Ray' centered around his own character in the 2021 film 'Deliver Us From Evil'. The actor revealed, "I've had quite a few Zoom meetings with the scenario writers in Korea. There is a consensus that 'Ray' will have a slightly less serious tone, and a more bright, colorful tone. That is the direction we are going in. Right now, I'm not interested in participating in the project as more than an actor. Being a producer and an actor for the same project is not an easy task. I don't think I'll be working on a project where I'm directly involved solely as a producer quite yet. Taking on the role of a producer means that you shoulder much more responsibility. Plus, I can't quite picture anything where I'm not the actor yet."

Now, onto the big question of when will filming for 'Squid Game 2' begin? And will Lee Byung Hun play a lead role in season 2? Lee Jung Jae answered, "It's probably safe to assume that. As we all saw at the end of season 1, the main plot of season 2 will be revenge, and the key figure who controlled the workings of the games in season 1 was Lee Byung Hun sunbae, so it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story. This is the first time that I'll be working with Lee Byung Hun sunbae, actually. Well, we worked on a drama called 'White Nights 3.98' back in the day, but we didn't have any scenes together. Anyways, 'Squid Game 2' will begin filming in the summer and the filming will likely last for about 10 months. We were working on season 1 for about 10 months as well, but that was with delays caused by COVID-19. But seeing as season 2 will be bigger in
scale, it will probably take longer to complete."

Finally, Lee Jung Jae spilled the beans on his surprise meeting with BTS's V. According to Lee Jung Jae, "I ran into him at a private gathering. He was so personable. We exchanged contact information. He let me hear a song he was working on, he said it was about half finished. He was charming, both in appearance and in personality. I understood why he was so loved worldwide."

SEOUL March 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korean blockbuster movie “Hunt” has been invited to Belgium’s “Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, BIFFF” under the segment of non competition, addressed agency Artist Company on Wednesday.

“Hunt”, which is a director debut piece by South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae, depicts a complicated story between agent Park Pyong-ho, acted by Lee Jung-jae and Kim Jung-do acted by Jung Woo-sung, from National Intelligence Service.

“Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, BIFFF”, which will kick off on April 11, is considered one of the three well known genre festivals alongside “Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya” of Spain and “Fantasporto“ of Portugal. (END)

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism released the result of the 2023 Survey on Hallyu Wave Abroad (taken in 2022) on the 10th. Starting with this survey, the target countries and the number of samples were expanded from 8,500 people in 18 countries to 25,000 people in 26 countries.

First, the result of the question “What first image comes to mind when you think of Korea?” was as follows: K-pop (14.3%), K-food (13.2%), Hallyu Stars (7.4%), K-dramas (6.6%), and IT (5.6%). K-pop took the top spot for six consecutive years.

The global popularity of K-content, which was revitalized by the pandemic, has continued even in the endemic phase. The influence of Squid Game, which enjoyed explosive popularity worldwide in 2021, continued in 2022 as well. Squid Game (11.3%) took the top spot in the “Favorite Drama” category, followed by Extraordinary Attorney Woo (2.8%), All of Us Are Dead (2.6%), and Business Proposal (1.9%), all three dramas aired in 2022.

In particular, Lee Min Ho was named the “Favorite Hallyu Star” in 22 countries, including China, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Australia, America, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Italy, Spain, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. This can be interpreted as a direct result of the success of the drama Pachinko, which premiered on Apple TV in March 2022.

As for the “Favorite K-pop Star” category, BTS (31.3%) and BLACKPINK (10.8%) came in first and second, respectively. “Favorite Movie” list is as follows: Parasite (9.1%) and Train to Busan (6.9%) – two movies from before 2022 – and Carter (2.5%), Hunt (2.0%), and 20th Century Girl (1.8%) – three movies from 2022.

Lee Jung Jae Talks About Starring as Jedi Master in Upcoming Star Wars Series ‘The Acolyte’

Lee Jung Jae attended Star Wars Celebration in London and shared his experience of starring in the new Star Wars series, The Acolyte, where he will be joining as a Jedi master.

The actor expressed his amazement at the celebration, saying, “Today, a lot of surprising things are happening. I have been amazed to find that this celebration with so many of you has been going on for 15 years. And I was really glad to show you a sneak peek of The Acolyte today as well. For me, today the most interesting parts were that all the trailers had different feels and different genres from them. So I can’t wait to see them all in full.”

When asked about having his first series in a foreign language, Lee stated that it is a special experience for him. He said, “So, it’s definitely a special experience for me especially because English isn’t my first language. So if it wasn’t Star Wars, I may have declined some other show. But who would say no to Star Wars, come on! And they said you can use a lightsaber.”

Lee also shared his love for Star Wars and how it’s an honor for him to be part of the show’s team.  “I am also a fan of Star Wars. It is such an honor to be with you as part of the show’s team. I guarantee you that The Acolyte will be the most interesting of the Star Wars stories. Star Wars has always shown top visuals and development of stories and so on.  I think The Acolyte will be showing a great example of that going further ahead,” he remarked.

Producer Leslie Headland commented that she wanted to talk about the world she loves so much, the Star Wars universe, from the perspective of the villains. She explained, “My goal was to come up with a mixture of Frozen and Kill Bill.”

The Acolyte follows the dark secret of the galaxy and the Jedi at their strongest during the peak of the High Republic era. The new series will be released in 2024.

Lee Jung-jae: Nobody would refuse Star Wars

By beborn@donga.com | April 11, 2023 07:50

IMG_3027.jpg

Lee Jung-jae, the first Asian actor to win Outstanding Lead Actor at the Emmy Awards, is set to star as a Jedi master in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off series, The Acolyte, on Disney+. According to his management agency, Artist Company, Lee attended Star Wars Celebration in London on Friday and shared his experience of working on The Acolyte. Lee is excited to join the Star Wars franchise and take on this iconic role.

"As English is not my first language, I would have declined the role if The Acolyte were not a Star Wars series. But who could refuse the chance to be a part of Star Wars?" Lee stated. "I was overwhelmed with emotion the first time I held a 'light saber' during an action scene." Lee also expressed his confidence in the upcoming series, saying, "I guarantee that The Acolyte will be the most captivating story in the Star Wars universe." In the show, Lee's character is a Jedi Master who wields a lightsaber and has expertise in mechanical engineering.

"The Acolyte" is an eight-episode series that takes place 100 years before the events of "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" (1999). The show is set at the end of the Republic era and focuses on the emergence of a new evil force and the dark secrets of the galaxy. "I wanted to explore the Star Wars universe and tell the story from the villains' perspective. My pitch was “Frozen” meets “Kill Bill," creator Leslye Headland explained.

Including an Asian actor in the role of a Jedi Master is significant for the Star Wars franchise, as it reflects a commitment to expanding diversity on screen. Amandla Stenberg, a black actress, will play the former padawan of Lee Jung-jae's Jedi master. According to Collider, the series will "break with Star Wars tradition by featuring the most ethnically diverse cast yet." Deadline has also reported that the show will be a rarity in featuring both an Asian actor and a black woman in leading roles.

Lee Jung-jae Didn't Have to Think Twice About 'Star Wars' Role

By Lee Tae-hoon | April 11, 2023 11:27

Lee Jung-jae (left) and Amandla Stenberg pose at the Star Wars Celebration event in London on April 7, in this picture posted on Star Wars Twitter.

Actor Lee Jung-jae, who will appear in the upcoming "Star Wars" series "The Acolyte" on Disney+, says he jumped on the project despite the language barrier because it's "Star Wars" -- something no actor can resist.

Lee was speaking at the Star Wars Celebration Europe event in London last Friday.

He said working on the project has been a special experience, as it is his first foreign-language series.

"English is not my first language, so if it wasn't 'Star Wars,' I might have declined. Who would say no to 'Star Wars'? And they said I can use a lightsaber," he said through an interpreter.

Star Wars Celebration, a large fan convention held to celebrate the "Star Wars" franchise, has been drawing tens of thousands of fans annually since its launch in 1999.

Lee was on the stage in London along with his American co-star Amandla Stenberg to discuss the series. It was the first Celebration for both of them.

"I was really glad to show you a sneak peek of 'Acolyte' today," he said. "I guarantee you that 'The Acolyte' will be the most interesting of the 'Star Wars' stories."

Lee plays the lead role of the Jedi Master, but little is known about the character yet.

The eight-episode series is set in the final days of the High Republican era, some 100 years before "The Phantom Menace" from the prequel trilogy. It deals with the "dark side of the Force," whose mysterious power causes many Jedi Knights to become corrupt and evil.

Shooting is due to be completed in the U.K. next month ahead of the series' release next year.

'The Acolyte': Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae to explore uncharted era in 'Star Wars' universe

2024 Disney+ series described as "Kill Bill" meets "Frozen."

Lucasfilm's upcoming Disney+ series The Acolyte is set in the High Republic era, a period yet to be explored within the live action Star Wars universe.

Taking place some 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, it will take us back into the past, during a time of relative peace when the Jedi were plentiful, but will also chart the rise of the Dark Side.

This weekend's Star Wars Celebration 2023 in London gave audiences their first glimpse at the show, which is due to wrap shooting this May, and it revealed a host of characters — many of them Jedi — that we know little about. Yahoo Entertainment spoke to the cast and showrunner to find out more about the mysterious Jedi — in particular, the intriguing Jedi master played by Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae.

Lee says that his character “explores lots of different emotions” adding that “this Jedi has experienced a lot.” (Lee co-headlines the series with Amandla Stenberg, who plays his former padawan.)

Showrunner and creator Leslye Headland adds, “I think that people have this conception of the Jedi as very stoic, and without emotion.

"And I think what JJ (Lee Jung-jae) brings to this particular role is an emotional complexity that you don't get to often see with Jedi. You do see [it] with some characters, but I think what he's done is astonishing. And I can't wait for the world to see it.”

“He has this aura about him, especially in his voice, that makes you want to listen to everything he says," comments co-star Manny Jacinto (The Good Place). "He’s like the perfect Jedi Master because of posture, his traits, his voice, his demeanor.”

“He’s the best kind of Jedi. He’s just so Jedi. When you just see it you know it,” adds Rebecca Henderson.

Jacinto calls his own character a good guy: “He’s a citizen of the galaxy just minding his own business, having a good time and then he gets wrapped up in this whole story within the High Republic and the Jedi.”

Henderson, meanwhile, was revealed to be fan-favorite Vernestra Rwoh. She's “a very powerful elder Jedi master; a Mirialan," the actress says. "She’s a near-human species of alien.”

Both Stenberg, who says that her character is “mad, and good with knives”, and Joonas Suotamo, who plays a Wookiee Jedi that is “worlds away from the smuggling business of Chewbacca [the Wookiee he played in the latest Star Wars trilogy],” describe the series as a mystery-thriller.

Headland says of the eight-episode series, “There are a lot of surprises… because the show isn't tied to any legacy characters and it isn't part of the Skywalker saga.

"There's definitely a lot of left turns that we can take and we can do a lot of things and have a lot of freedom. Of course, there are other things that would step on canon that we don't do but you're definitely going to be in for a ride, and a weekly experience. Each episode will feel a little bit like its own movie chock-full of characters, chock-full of mystery, incredible performances by the cast and not just dramatic performances, and emotional performances, but the action performances too.”

The showrunner describes the series as Kill Bill meets Frozen — but what does that mean?

“I think there’s just some really cool fights," Jacinto weighs in. "We had a great stunt team who put their heart and soul into it and I hope that we can rise to the insane abilities in Kill Bill... I’ve had some sneak peeks, and I’ve been blown away as a fan, too. I know that I’m astonished at what’s coming out so far.”

And what about the Frozen part?

“You know — family.” Say no more.

Star Wars: The Acolyte will stream on Disney+ in 2024.
