7 Filipino Actors Who Played Your Favorite Korean Actors’ Drama Characters

From Gong Yoo to Kim Soo Hyun, these Filipino actors were cast as the local versions of your favorite Korean actors’ drama characters in the Philippines.

The Philippines has been importing Korean dramas since 2003 through local networks GMA, ABS-CBN, TV5, and even government-controlled channel PTV.

Aside from localizing the dramas by means of dubbing, local networks have expanded the localization of a number of dramas by remaking them and adding flavors suitable to the Philippine palate. At present, there are a total of 16 dramas remade whose original versions were also aired on local television.

A rumored remake of the hit Korean dramas Descendants of the Sun and Boys Over Flowers are also reportedly on the way. The buzz has been on since last year about Filipino actor Alden Richards becoming the Philippines’ Captain Yoo Si Jin.

Still, before Richards officially (if true) takes on the duty to be Big Boss, let us look back on the previous local adaptations and the Filipino actors who took on the pressure and burden to follow in the footsteps of top Korean actors including Gong Yoo, Hyun Bin, Won Bin, and more.

In this article, we list down seven Filipino actors who played your favorite Korean actor’s drama characters.

7. Gil Cuerva

Filipino-Spanish actor Gil Cuerva debuted as the lead of the Philippine adaptation of My Love from the Star. He played the counterpart of Kim Soo Hyun’s well-loved character Do Min Joon, which is locally known as Matteo Domingo.

The role was originally rumored to have been offered to Alden Richards, who is now also reportedly being tapped to play the local version of Song Joong Ki’s Captain Yoo Si Jin.

Compared to other adaptations, My Love from the Star received lower ratings with its highest only at 11.1 percent.

Who is Gil Cuerva?

Prior to his casting as Matteo Domingo, Cuerva is a model based in Hong Kong. It was in his return to the Philippines when he auditioned for the Philippine adaptation of the Korean drama that would mark the start of his local showbiz career.

At present, he plays the lead role in the daytime series, My Guitar Princess, opposite Julie Anne San Jose.

Why ? :D

Hi hwonhwon, I guess the rating mentioned in the article was already the 2nd run (re-run) in the Philippines. The figure is considered high considering that this was already its 2nd run. As far as I know & remember a Philippine remake re-run was broadcast on May 2017. "My Love from the Star" was a success in the Philippines after hitting high ratings and dubbed as "One of the most loved Korean drama in the Philippines". It aired its 1st broadcast on GMA Network from April 21 to June 30, 2014, on weeknights at 5:45 PM PST . Each episode runs 45 minutes including commercial breaks. The entire series was dubbed in Filipino.  It was the highest rated Korean drama in the Philippines for 2014.  :P

I think the ratings mentioned in the article was referring to the Filipino remake.   I watched a bit on Youtube out of curiosity and all I can say is... never touch a classic.  Remakes hardly ever measure up to the original.

Thanks for clarifying, willenette :)

BTW,  do you know if the time an artist spends in the army counts towards their contracts with their agency?  I know Soo Hyun renewed his contract with Keyeast in late 2016, if it counts, his contract will end in late 2019.  If if doesn't,  it drags out to 2021, which is long time and unfair to him since his company got bought out while he was in the army.

yuzu, I'm not really sure in terms of their management contract - I guess there are times & cases when they have an "offset arrangement" - this is a type of side deal, sometimes best described as a sweetener. This is an agreement between two or more parties that provides additional benefits and is ancillary to another negotiated contract. What I'm darned sure is this oftentimes happened & applied to CFs. There are celebrities that the period of their CF contract covers the term of their two-year military service.  :P
