[interview] Jo In-seong, "Song Hye-kyo is beautiful, that's it"

Source | 2013/04/07 |

photo298301.jpg

"I had nail care to express my emotions with my hands"

Jo In-Seong who just finished the drama "That Winter, the Wind Blows" said, "I don't want to star in anything like that for a while". This drama was a first since the movie "A Frozen Flower" 5 years ago. He seemed sad to let Oh Soo go as he said, "The drama lingers so much that I called the writer, Noh Hee-kyeong the day after the last shoot and cried on the phone. "That Winter, the Wind Blows" is something I put more effort in than a movie". He also said, "Song Hye-kyo is beautiful enough for any man to want".

- How does it feel to finish your first come back project in 5 years?

"I called Noh in the morning after watching the final episode and cried for a while. It felt weird as feelings of sorriness and dejection co-existed. The drama took a preparation time of more than 5~6 months and it was harder than a movie. Noh listened to be quietly and then said, "Why didn't you put less effort into it"".

- Apparently you cried the most during the making

"I cried a lot in the scene where I drank Soju with Jung Eun-ji (Hee-seon). It was the scene we worked hard on the most. She said she cracked her head for two days for the line, 'You should have cheated'. The scene was shot since the morning and reading lines like, "Yeong loved you" and "She seemed bitter" made me go crazy. The scene had to be put on hold for us to go have a cigarette. The director told me it was enough for this scene and that I should read it anymore".

- What kind of advice did Ko Hyeon-jeong give you?

"She didn't exactly say anything but she sent me a text message saying 'Noh Hee-kyeong is the best. Kim Kyoo-tae is the best. Song Hye-kyo is the best and you are the best'. It meant a lot to me".

- There were many close-up scenes.

"The director wanted many intricate scenes that even captured the movement of hands. I even had nail care for the hands. It bothered me that I had many scenes where I had to touch Song Hye-kyo's face. But it was easier to distribute my emotions to all parts of my body rather than just my face as it can sometimes seem like too much".

photo298299.jpg

- To evaluate Song Hye-kyo as a woman?

"She is an amazing woman. No one can disagree with me that she is amazing. That doesn't mean I want her otherwise. It's my theory that dramas should end as dramas. The moment you start having other thoughts is when things get awkward. Thinking about your partner as more than a partner will make you look at her in a different way".

- You are in your 30s. Any marriage plans?

"I feel the time to get married is closing in. I wonder who my future partner will be. My ideal type is someone with a bigger mind than me. A man is always a child as I hear my mother say she has 3 sons including my father. I also hope my woman is someone slightly bigger than me and suppress me. I think I need to get married before I'm 40 if I want to meet someone who can take care of me".

- Any plans for going abroad?

"I still think I'm a 'local actor'. I am already loved in my country I don't need to exceed that and demand it overseas. If there is an actress like Hye-kyo who has many talents and is loved overseas, there are actors like me who are happy with what I have here. I do hope though that my works are spread out overseas. Song Hye-kyo is an actress who knows how to speak English and Chinese. I need to brush up on my Korean first".

[interview] Zo In-sung, I want to be an actor like DiCaprio and Downey Jr.

clvg7ly2s25ptpmj6d7a47o.jpg

[by Kwon Hyuk-Kee / translated by Chloe-Yun] How on earth would “an actor with eyes of Leonard DiCaprio and flexibility of Robert Downey Jr.” look like? Actor Zo In-sung is longing for becoming this unimaginable actor figure.

“I wish to be like DiCaprio. His eyes are so energetic and shining when he concentrates on something. I also admire Downey Jr.’s sterling sense of humor. I can ? his genius; he’s got the ability to act seriously in an effortless way. It is really cool,” said Zo during his interview.

It seems we may not be able to meet the DiCaprio-Downey version of Zo In-sung right away from his next TV drama; it looks like he still hasn’t come out of his previous role ‘Oh Soo’ from SBS ‘That Winter, The Wind Blows,’ which recently went off the air.

On April 5, there was an interview with Zo In-sung, who looked uncomfortable sitting on a chair due to his tall of stature; he was definitely taller than DiCaprio and the Iron Man.  Zo continually tried to find his comfortable sitting position while managing the interview, which showed his concentration and flexibility that will soon reach the peak of DiCaprio and the Iron Man.

2iebqflenlltk9kd9xwnen3.jpg

According to a source from ‘That Winter, The Wind Blows,’ the writer Noh Hee-kyung said to Zo In-sung who showed tears after the TV series ended, “You worked too hard. Should’ve been sloppier or you will die early.”

The image of Oh Soo that is stamped in viewer’s mind was the collaboration of Zo In-sung and Noh Hee-kyung. “You’ve got ‘the look.’ Always remember the look and the eyes," said the writer to the actor.

The writer’s advice encouraged the actor to perfectly express Oh Soo’s detailed emotions through his eyes when Oh Young (Song Hye-kyo) found out about his identity. “Don’t try to explain but look in her eyes. You are only sorry for your love toward her. Remember the eyes of love,” said the writer.

“I was once a young, awkward actor. It seems that being in my 30s gives me some advantage as an actor, not that I became a better actor!” said Zo In-sung.

Zo In-sung also gave off his fresh charm during the interview. “I said to Song Hye-kyo that being in the TV drama made me feel so loved that I wanted to walk in the street (to meet fans),” cheerfully said the actor, “and producer Mr. Kim suggested we shoot in an amusement park sometimes.”

Winter guy, Zo In-sung

Zo In-sung and winter seem to have a deep connection in a way that he always did TV dramas that aired during winter. “I guess it is a schedule circulation. Once I chose a winter drama, I happened to choose it again—especially with SBS—because the timing is just about right." He continued, “And someone said that he foresaw me doing another winter drama with SBS later soon.

Zo In-sung, of course, likes winter. The actor said that he and winter work in good harmony even though he had to work hard during the season.  “My mother often scolds me for my cold-to-death winter fashion,” said the fashionista. “But it feels like I get more handsome when being cold,” he continued with a boy face, “and I can’t give up on it!”

dslvlydollszb01nb8tvv73.jpg

“I like acting winter-guy image, a cold-hearted guy. But I somehow act a cold-hearted guy with a hot feeling. I matched well with a cold-hearted character because of my sharp features, Zo In-sung continued, “I want to play a vampire someday, the path of American idol stars.”

Through “That Winter, The Wind Blows,” he was imprinted to viewers’ mind as the emotional guy. Zo In-sung confessed that he had hard time with crying scenes.  As the actor said “Guys don’t cry often,” it is hard for guys to act really crying, which is totally different from showing tears.

“As an actor, I don’t usually get hurt. So I try to bring up the sad memories from the old past, and it is a hard work.”

However, there is no doubt that Zo In-sung is one of few actors who show the most impressive crying scene. Oh Soo cried since the beginning of the show. “Ms. Noh and Mr. Kim said Oh Soo had to cry from the third episode of the show,” said the emotional actor, “Intensive crying scenes usually come after the climax. It was hard to keep with the strong emotion from the beginning.”

sdm3oxrblz07h0qownzwdwo.jpg

The writer Ms. Noh was very worried with the actor’s health condition. “Don’t cry from now on. Forget about the script and just go with the emotion,” said the writer to the actor who checked into a hospital suffering from enteritis.

Zo In-sung said, “If my crying scenes have ever touched the viewers’ hearts, it is all thanks to Ms. No’s advice and help. I could not be able to cry if I couldn’t concentrate.”

Zo In-sung announced that he is planning to do film noir for his next movie. The actor said it would be a movie like “The Man from Nowhere” (starring Won Bin), but nothing hasn’t been confirmed yet.

How would Zo In-sung version of “The Man from Nowhere” look like?

“That Winter The Wind Blows” Song Hye Kyo Asks Jo In Sung “Were You Happy?”

SBS drama "That Winter The Wind Blows" came to an end as one of the most unforgettable dramas. "That Winter The Wind Blows" has been referred to as the drama with a psychological-melodrama.

The climax in the drama wasn't when something happened. The climax was when psychological changes occurred. With close-ups that showed every detail of the actors' face expressions, viewers were able to stay close next to Oh Soo (Jo In Sung) and see through Oh Young's (Song Hye Kyo) heart. This drama also gave viewers another chance to get more familiar with actors Jo In Sung and Song Hye Kyo.

"That Winter The Wind Blows" allowed both Song Hye Kyo and Jo In Sung to successfully return to the drama industry after 5 and 8 years respectively. Even though their interviews were separate, Song Hye Kyo and Jo In Sung seem to have shared a lot of the same emotions while working on the drama together.

** "How Do You Feel About the Successful Completion of 'That Winter The Wind Blows'?"

Song Hye Kyo:

"This was a project that gave me a chance to experience more adventures in the future. Since this drama was so successful, I think I will be able to choose a piece without wondering about how popular it will be. I am thinking about taking another adventure since 'That Winter The Wind Blows' turned out so well."

Jo In Sung:

"I feel like I have to express my thoughts extravagantly just like how the drama turned out to be. However for now, I'm relieved. I feel that I will be able to continue onto a next project. I drank a lot after the last episode aired but I woke up really early the next day regardless. I spoke to Kim I I began to tear while I was speaking to Beom and writer Noh Hui Kyung on the phone. It was very strange. I don't know why that happened. I was crying and they just listened quietly."

** "It Was a Very Emotional Drama, It Must Have Been Extremely Difficult..."

Song Hye Kyo:

"It was very hard. I was exhausted numerous times and when those scenes were over I just sat still looking into space for a while, not able to do anything. Even after I went home after filming those emotional scenes, I was constantly worried whether I did okay or not, so I barely got any rest even at home. Since everything was produced very early and on schedule, it was physically very comfortable but the mental stress was worse."

"I was very lonely while preparing for the scene where Oh Young says goodbye to Oh Soo. I felt like I was actually Oh Young. I was so lonely while I was saying goodbye to Oh Soo after returning from the vacation house in the mountain. I can't forget how I felt while I was saying my lines for the scene."

Jo In Sung:

"I felt like I was actually going to die while I was filming the 16th episode. There was a kiss scene with Oh Young and then a scene where Oh Soo leaves a video message for Oh Young after having an emotional conversation with her. I had to film those scenes right after the other and it really felt like I was about to die. Also, there was a heliport near the set so whenever there was a helicopter nearby, we couldn't film because we can't record our voices. I watched the drama on TV and realized that I am the one near death rather than Oh Young."

** "What Did You Think About Jo In Sung's Crying Scene?"

Song Hye Kyo:

"Since I had to act without looking into his eyes, I had to watch him on television as one of the viewers. I always knew the acting and what it says in the script but there were times when the scene came out completely different on the screen so I was always curious about each broadcast. It was beyond my expectations each time. Honestly, most male actors look very similar in crying scenes but Jo In Sung has the ability to express more emotions than some female actors. It is amazing to see and because of this, my heart ached more at times."

Jo In Sung:

"Hye Kyo was generous with her compliments regarding my crying scenes but in all honesty, people don't have several crying faces. I was afraid because writer Noh Hui Kyung has seen every single work I have done in the past. I was afraid that this character would be overlapped by my previous characters because of the crying scene but writer Noh Hui Kyung told me, 'Don't worry. Even if it is the same crying scene, it will be different from the past since you have gotten older and more mature'."

** "Did You See The Parody By Shin Dong Yup and Lee Young Ja?"

Jo In Sung:

"Don't you think it's amazing? I think 'That Winter The Wind Blows' was made into a parody because of all the love and support from the viewers."

Song Hye Kyo:

"I have a lot of respect for comedians. How can they act with stern faces in such a situation like that? It was very entertaining but one side of me felt sad because people will think of this parody when they think of this scene that was a painful scene for Oh Young and Oh Soo. (laughs)"

** "How Do You Feel About the Pre-Production method of 'That Winter The Wind Blows' used?"

Song Hye Kyo:

"Since we weren't being chased by time, it was more comfortable compared to filming each episode up until it is scheduled to be broadcasted. I really hope more production crews decide on this method. Not just for me but I think viewers will be able to concentrate on the story more since the project will be more perfected. This method allowed me to work harder."

"I wouldn't be able to say anything if I didn't experience this firsthand but now that I realized how effective it is, I think I will take the method of production into very careful consideration from now on. I think I will hesitate if I had to film a drama in a setting where I would have to be under pressure because of the short deadline."

Jo In Sung:

"It is different from other dramas because we were able to reshoot a scene if the editors didn't like it. It might not be my place to say this but I hope this method becomes established as the official method of production for filming. There are probably a lot of aspects that I don't know about, like the organization, production budget and etc, but I hope the set becomes a place where nobody is distressed."

** "How Was The Chemistry With Other Actors On Set?"

Jo In Sung:

"It killed. Hye Kyo did everything and turned all the credit to me. We both knew. We knew each other's territory and knew exactly when we had to be more understanding of each other. Hye Kyo knows when I'm trying to be more understanding and she does the same with me. The reason all the actors are able to give other actors the credit is because we all feel how each and every person tried to be more understanding of each other and worked with the other's pace. I really wonder if I will ever get a chance to work on a project where I'll develop the same type of connection as this one."

Song Hye Kyo:

"If Jo In Sung and I were actors in our 20s, burning with passion to get ahead in our own careers, we would have had some problems. There are times when you have to bring out the light in the other actors and vice versa. When actors meet before realizing this, they tend to clash. We both have a lot of experience and have a wider perspective in looking at a project, so we had really good chemistry."

When Song Hye Kyo was asked whether she had anything to ask Jo In Sung, Song Hye Kyo became deep in thought. Song Hye Kyo answered, "What should I ask. I want to ask him, 'In Sung, were you happy that winter?'"

Two days later, Jo In Sung answered the question, "I was just as happy as you were."

Even though his answer was short, it revealed the connection Song Hye Kyo and Jo In Sung developed while working together. As if Jo In Sung already knew how Song Hye Kyo was feeling, he had answered, "I was just as happy as you were."

Jo ready to marry, but not settle down

Source | 2013/04/08

photo298285.jpg

Jo In-Seong said he wants to marry a woman he can lean on.

"It is true that the age to get married is coming, physically", the 31-year-old actor told several local media outlets on Friday. "So, I am thinking a lot about marriage".

Jo, who gained footing in the entertainment scene as a commercial model in 1998, had rarely talked about marriage before.

"Men are children to the end. 'My mother says that she has raised three sons including my father", said Jo, who has an elder brother.

"I want somebody that would adore me even if I am not mature, and someone whom I could lean on, rather than that who leans on me".

Jo made a comeback as a television drama actor after nine years with SBS drama "That Winter, the Wind Blows" which ended last week.

He played a poker player falling in love with a blind woman played by Song Hye-kyo

PS. I'm really thankful to JIS for defending SHK by saying that the on going rumor between him & SHK is not true and that how he wished the rumor was about him instead asking SHK out and being rejected. What a true gentleman. :D  SHK is indeed lucky to have one true friend like JIS. :D

JIS - A fella who is not interested in acting - A misconception

Regardless whether it is <That Winter>, <Summer Days>, <What happened in Bali> or the movie <A Dirty Carnival>, JIS has taken one step further in deepening his lonely manliness. However, when the reporter met him for the interview that day, he displayed a cheerful and lively demeanor, very different from what he portrayed in his works.

Due to the reporter's height, he will constantly lower his head and stop from time to time to listen carefully to the reporter's questions. He was smiling a lot and when being asked a lot of problematic questions, he was still replying with a lot of sunshine and wit.

When conveying what was the reporter's impression of him he quickly asked "Is it charismatic? Can't be idiot right?" Although the reporter's heart was shouting out "Of course it is charismatic and not idiot" but he held back. The conversation naturally flowed to the difference between the actor JIS who is constantly unhappy with youth or the happy and passionate average guy JIS.

Reporter: In <That Winter> OS has obtained a lot of consolation from OY. Is there someone in real life that is such a person for you?
JIS: OF course there is. But if I reveal it, it will bring a lot of inconveniences to that person. There is one that I have mentioned many times before, one of which is my Taekwando instructor, in my high school he was my teacher and best friend. In high school, we were not allowed to drink. But it is with this teacher that we went drinking and even when I go home after drinking, my parents will also not scold me. He was a person that guided me a lot when I was very short tempered in my youth and influenced me in many ways.

Reporter: In times of hardship, or when you need to tidy up your emotions, what do you do?
JIS: In times like that I will not stay alone. I will call out all the friends around me. In these moments, it is best to have close friends who know me best. In the entertainment industry is like a mini society, there are people who are closer to me and to find this one person in my close circle to discuss, I will feel much better. Then I will head back to have a good night's rest. Yes, that is the way I heal (Laughs).
Of course it is possible to be alone and try to heal but leveraging off my friends is also ok, anyway they also leverage off me (laugh). Because I pay for the drinks (laughs). All they need to do is to walk the distance of 5 -10 mins, so its good. Ji Bang( NO idea who this is) is my best friend, At that time, he has a gf so he loved to groom himself. (laugh). So Ji bang is very good looking and his nickname is aerobic tights because he always wears very very tight pants and a very small jacket.

Reporter: Although friends are good, but family is also a source of consolation? Any thoughts on marriage?
JIS: Honestly, I think I am at the age suitable for getting married. Theoretically, I have also had the same thinking many times before. Who will be my partner? However, a man is still always a big kid, just like how my mom will always count my dad as one and say that she raised 3 boys. The men will always be boys. (laughs)
In terms of partner, I do not want a women older than me. In terms of figure.... no, even if the figure is bigger than me also can (laughs). What I wish is no matter how hard I try to escape I am still within her clutches. In terms of comparison, it will be best if she can be someone whom I can rely on more than she relies on me. OF course I hope that she really loves me because I think I can date someone who likes me. My friend told me to hurry up and get married, getting married is very good. So I also wish to get married before I turn 40.

ps: Sorry this article is a bit weird, even reading it I find it hard to understand)

JIS and Lim Sae Mi took a photo together at the final screening "Goodbyes are sad"
fana6h.jpg
JIS and Lim Sae Mi were present at the final screening of <That Winter> and even displayed a very close relationship pose in their photo together.
In the photo JIS was holding LSM's shoulder and both of them had their thumbs up. In particular, it was the cheerful smile and that they were leaning onto each other that gave the impression that they were very close like siblings.
Particularly for LSM, she mentioned that although it was an honour to have acted with so many seniors, it was with JIS that left the deepest and most memorable memories. She is filled with emotions such as "Not knowing when they will be able to meet again" and "thank you for always looking after me during this period.

Seeing JIS and LSM's photo, netizens all commented that they look like siblings, like angels.

@ayronics thank you so much for translating some of Insung's news! <3

@kdramafanusa thank you so much for posting Insung's news. You know so much about Insung. I was wondering do you know if he was having problems with letting go of some of his characters? Like for instance his character in What Happened in Bali?

Hi all, I really thought my crying was over, but I was in tears reading some of the translations of his interviews. It touched me very much to hear that he actually could not cry as a man and he really had to just do it because his character needed to do it. I wonder how much he also suffered doing that as Jaemin also because he cried a whole bunch and it was just so real in WHIB as well as TWTWB. I'm so happy to read those interviews from all of you. So grateful because otherwise I wouldn't know how much hardship he went through just to deliver the role Oh Soo to us.

He looks so awesome in the 2nd picture. <3

Some pics of Insung when he was in the Air Force credits to JIS Baidu
