I'm on episode 8 so far. Just taking my time watching it. I'm really enjoying it so far. I like the battle scenes, very intense. The love triangle story between the three is OK. However, there is one part of the story I REALLY HATE. That's the whole promotion jealousy thing. Now, I've never been in a war, but I doubt that something like that really happens in a war, so much that one soldier will jeopardize the lives of others over trying to get a promotion.

It's a drama so some plots are likely a bit dramatic. Besides, as part of human nature, greed exists more or less in most of us. Jang Woo is the most unselfish kind, at least he had no ambition while he was serving his country. Tae Ho wanted to be a professional military man but not him. He rose simply because he was a gifted soldier with survival instincts. And he put the lives of his soldiers above anything. Gosh I miss them! Enjoy the drama. It is a great one not to be missed imho...

wow this drama was really amazing!~ i'm just reading some of the past comments and yes, this drama really did a GREAT job displaying what happened during the korean war, how much suffering and sacrifices there were. yet what's really said is that this war where there were so many sacrifices, has yet to still come to an end and only on a halt temporarily. how great would it be to see Korea united as one ^___^ i think more than us, the korean veterans would love to see that happen soon.

but yeah, on the side note, man the last episode had me crying for about the last half of the episode. it was really touching when they all just went to the bridge to wait for sjs, loyalty!!!

p.s. i know the ratings were low and kept dropping too, but i think despite the ratings, this drama was REALLY good, but maybe it was meant for a more mature audience and didn't attract younger people and/or taku's high ratings just attracted more people to check that out instead of this, but yeah ratings does NOT reflect the decency of this drama

Synopsis

It's been a while I haven't visited this thread. I finally completed RN1 with subtitles and it makes me more heartbroken for the ending. Jang Woo told Tae Ho that he spent loving Soo Yeon for 20 years but another 60 years longing for her and his love for only grew deeper. JW & SY will forever be in heart whenever I watch the series again!

I finally finished this drama last night.  From episode 10 onward, I was drawn to this new actor YOON KyeSang.

I'm so impressed with his acting over all, and at times, I feel he over-shined the main character.

Just finish watching this drama. My eyes are still puffy and red from all the crying during the last episode. This is by far one of the best drama that I've ever seen. The cast are amazing. I wish JW and SY are able to reunited at the end.

I agree...at first i was sceptical whether to watch or not to watch.. i tot want to watch for the sake of KHN and SJS..but after 1st ep.. it was unstoppable.. i finished watching in 2 days.. OMG.. now my eyes are puffy red.. sooo touching, heartbreaking drama.. with all the brotherhood.. endless love.. loyalty... soo touching.. *sob..sob..* can't stop crying

On another note, So Ji Sub and Kim Ha Neul had so many awesome kissing scenes. I meant real and beautiful kissing, not some 'painful to see' kissing we always see. What a wonderful change in Korean Drama history, LOL

I'm sorry for asking some last questions. Hope you still remember this series and help me to clarify:

What exactly happen to So Ji Sub's character in those missing years? 60 years is a very long time. Why couldn't he be able to contact Kim Ha Neul and Yoon Kye Sang's character at all? It's not that they moved to anywhere else. Did he get stuck in North Korea or something? That's why he couldn't go to South Korea. Did I miss something or the series didn't mention about it at all?

If he died at the end scene (on the bus), it's a pity that he's not had a chance to see his son.

For me Road Number One is beautifully made... It might have missed the ratings because of timing but this drama so deserved some yearend recognition! I am not happy how networks are not considering the awards merit of a drama just because it has poor ratings....

Here after 2 years and loving Road No. 1. hope more will get to know about this wonderful drama. Quoting the casts : " this drama though poorly rated (at the time it was aired)  will be re-evaluated ".  
Perhaps the koreans are not keen to be reminded that the war has not truly over.

I am disappointed that the drama got so low ratings, this should attract both men and women. but I guess they don't want to remind themselves of this horrific war? Or the point that this wasn't about the usual drama of life and love? This drama requires a matured audience as @sparlinghugs said it. 
The drama was beyond great, I can't find any that is better than it. Yoon Kye Sang and So Jisub did a terrific job portraying their own characters. I saw how much Shin Taeho grew from hating Suyeon and Jangwoo to forgiving them, he learned to become friends with JW and protect suyeon. They became true brothers in the end with the life and death situation ahead of themselves. He even took his promise to JW to the heart and stayed by side of Suyeon until the end.I think my mind changed about him when he straightened JW up and when he carried JW out of the battlefield, leaving the woman he once loved behind to save the rest. He did everything he could to help his captain out, and held it quite good in to be strong for the others. Even it means to get her and save him, he'd. 
JW the true born soldier, once a soldier will always be forever a soldier. As much as he wanted to be with Suyeon, he can't leave his troop behind. He can't let go of the though of his troops being trapped or in a hard situation. His love for Suyeon was deep, enough to go mad for losing her. But he came back thanks to her, and the other soldiers who wouldn't give up on him. Because they believed in him, he was their captain. He'd lead them home safely, no matter what. She also believed in him, that they'll return to each other eventually.  I love that JW didn't care about superiors or anything like that, he did what was right although the others do not agree with it. He led them to safety and did what he knew was right. He pretty much though the psychology on the enemy, of course they'd pick the ones who would cross easily over. In a war like that, your mental has to be settle and think straight. Think about your troop, not all about the skills that might get you killed.
This drama also showed us a sissy man become a brave man who change for the better, for his family, his troop and for the country. Another hot tempered man who became good in the end, and didn't seek revenge. 
The drama made me cried lots, about SuHee, JW's dad, and all his comrades that died in the war. It gave me a dramatic mental picture of how the war was. It was painful and dramatic to even imagine how it was at that time. 
Thumbs up to the writers as well, for making it as good as real. All the tactics, the surviving skills. and the acts of true friendship. And to the actors who made it realistic and enjoyable to watch. It has become one of my favourite drama, will watch it once more in the future.
