rubie
November 12, 2008 CJ Presales Thirst and Mother at AFM CJ Entertainment made two major deals at the American Film Market (AFM), signing presales on upcoming films by Korea’s top directors PARK Chan-wook and BONG Joon-ho. AFM was held in Santa Monica, California, November 5 -12 and is one of the world’s largest film trade events. CJ Ent. sold PARK’s Thirst, starring SONG Kang-ho, to Palisades Tartan U.K. for release in Great Britain. The erotically charged thriller about a priest-turned-vampire, wrapped shooting last month and is scheduled for release next spring. BONG’s Mother, starring heartthrob WON Bin, went to Diaphana for France. The film is a shift of pace for the director of monster-hit The Host. WON plays awkward young man framed in a brutal slaying. His devoted mother (KIM Hye-ja) pits herself against a corrupt legal system as she sets out to prove his innocence. The film is also slated for a 2009 spring release. CJ also sold a package-trio of 2008 features to Thailand's Rose Media for RYU Jang-ha’s Hello, School Girl, CHUNG Jung-hwa’s Lost and Found and JEON Yun-su’s A Portrait of Beauty. rubie
4.5 stars out of 5 The Good The Bad and The Weird Ji-woon Kim 2008 Brief Summary Directed by Ji-woon Kim (A BITTERSWEET LIFE, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS) and setting an all-time Korean box office opening weekend record this year, THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE WEIRD, an homage to Leone's similarly named classic, is one of the year's most anticipated genre titles. Full Description THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE WEIRD, at face value, is a Korean remake of THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY. However, updated with eye-popping colors, fast-paced editing, explosive action and a slightly different twist on the story, it stands on its own two feet quite nicely. Set in 1930's Manchuria, the intricate plot pits three outlaws against the entire Japanese army and a mob of Russian gangsters in a race to find the "treasure" that will define the outcome of the Sino-Japanese war. (The story is complex; expect to read lots of complaints that it makes no sense, but trust me, it's all there.) Jung Woo Sung is "The Good". While not quite as iconic as the unforgettable Clint Eastwood, he is nonetheless handsome as hell and unflappably suave. He stands for the Korean resistance, determined to use every weapon at his disposal against the Japanese invaders. Lee Byung Hun is "The Bad". More widely known from JSA, A BITTERSWEET LIFE and HERO, he's as bad as villains come and also icy smooth. Employed by a treacherous warlord to waylay the treasure, he has no intention of sharing any of the profit with his employer. The stand-out is Song Kang Ho, who won my heart irrevocably in THE HOST and is also well known from JSA, SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE, MEMORIES OF MURDER and LADY VENGEANCE. His turn as "The Weird", for my money, outstrips Eli Wallach's Tuco for sheer fun quotient and is a stellar three-dimensional performance that provides most of the buoyancy of the film that sustains the 2-hour plus run time. Apparently just a solo bandit out making a living, he stumbles across the prize and fights off all comers to hold on to it. Last but not least, the desert filming location is a major star. This is a fantastic Wild West location, with an Asian flair. Magnificent scenery and set pieces are beautifully shot and squeezed for every ounce of spectacle. rubie
November 21, 2008 Blue Dragon Award Goes to Sports Drama The 2008 Blue Dragon Awards chose a sports drama about the silver medal-winning Korean women handball Olympic team as the best movie of the year. In the award ceremony at the KBS Hall in Yeouido, Seoul, on Thursday, the award for the best film went to "Forever the Moment" directed by Yim Soon-rye. The movie is based on the true story of the women's Olympic team which lost to Denmark in the finals of the 2004 Athens Olympics on penalty shots. The ceremony, the 29th, was presented by actor Jung Joon-ho and actress Kim Hye-soo. The award for the best actor went to Kim Yun-seok, who plays a dirty detective who becomes a pimp in "The Chaser." So Ye-jin won the award for the best actress for her role in "My Wife Got Married." Kim Jee-woon won best director for "The Good, the Bad, the Weird." The movie won three other awards, in cinematography and art direction, and for the movie that drew the biggest audience with 6.68 million. The proceedings turned solemn when Choi Jin-sil was named as the recipient of honorary popular star award. It was 50 days since Choi died by her own hand. Actor Ahn Sung-ki paid tribute to her, saying "The films that she left us will be remembered in our hearts forever." rubie
November 20, 2008 The Host is next to be remade by Hollywood The Hollywood list of Korean remakes is expanding rapidly; latest addition to the list will be BONG Joon-ho’s The Host. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski will produce the Hollywood remake of The Host and he will team up with Fredrik Bond who will direct. Bond directed commercials for major brands and The Host remake will be his first shot at directing a feature film. Verbinski and Bond will be backed by Universal Pictures. The Host premiered at Festival de Cannes where it was critically appraised. The film became the most successful Korean film at the time, was invited by film festivals around the world, and was cinematically released in the U.S., Japan, and China. BONG’s 2006 monster film is known for its incorporation of numerous allusions to contemporary Korean society in its story. The remake will be written by Mark Poirier (Smart People). Prior to his Pirates of the Carribean trilogy, Verbinski directed the remake of the Japanese horror film The Ring. Verbinski attended the 2007 Pusan International Film Festival where he participated in panel discussions about Asian cinema; Verbinski praised Korean actors CHOI Min-sik and SONG Kang-ho, “When I watch Korean films, I wonder why I can’t get actors like SONG Kang-ho and CHOI Min-sik in my movies.” SONG plays a leading character in the original The Host.
