Crash: Episodes 5-6

by solstices

crash56_0.jpg

A case of theft unfurls into a far more sinister crime, leading our team to join forces with an old flame that isn’t entirely cooperative. One baddie may be down for the count, but now another murderer looms large — vigilante justice, or wrathful vengeance?

EPISODES 5-6

Investigating the drunk man’s death, our trusty team discovers that he’d been run over twice — both drivers fled, but the first hit was what killed him. A dashcam recording from the second driver reveals the first culprit had been the man who’d quarreled with the victim that night; he’d waited by the crime scene until a second car drove over the man.

Soon, the first car is found abandoned. It’d been stolen after the culprit broke the lock, and the car thief in question turns out to be a serial rapist, ugh. He deliberately chooses cars with women’s items inside, then uses the dashcam videos to pinpoint their home addresses.

Yeon-ho connects the dots and our dependable duo rushes to the theft victim’s home, leading to a hilarious scene in which Yeon-ho struggles (and fails) to climb over the wall while So-hee simply kicks the front gate open. LOL. Thankfully, they’ve arrived just in time. So-hee comforts the terrified woman, while Yeon-ho chases the suspect down in an amusing pursuit involving a dog statue and bewildered grannies. It’s a close call, but the suspect viciously kicks Yeon-ho in the face and manages to escape.

Crash: Episodes 5-6

The incident earns Yeon-ho the disdain of So-hee’s sly ex, the senior inspector LEE TAE-JOO (Oh Eui-shik), who isn’t above goading her about their past during office hours. Tae-joo is in charge of the serial assaults case, which means both teams have no choice but to cooperate. When Yeon-ho shares his theory that the suspects of both cases may be one and the same, blindsiding So-hee and intriguing Tae-joo, he’s met with the other officers’ disbelief. That is, until Yeon-ho backs it up with geographical evidence.

Tae-joo may be a self-serving, corrupt cop — So-hee had broken up with him after he closed a case linked to higher officials by only arresting the unlicensed taxi drivers on the bottom rung, in exchange for a promotion — but he’s far from an incompetent one. Building upon Yeon-ho’s conjecture, Tae-joo notes that the culprit’s tactic of using scissors to force open car locks is a method that only works on older models. With that, Tae-joo narrows down the suspects to an ex-convict that was released recently.

As for the injured Yeon-ho, So-hee urges him to put his safety first, even if the criminal gets away — she’s teaching him judo so that he can protect himself in a fight. When Yeon-ho returns to his desk, he finds a new pair of sneakers waiting for him with an encouraging note, aww. The next time So-hee sees him, he’s wearing the sneakers, having changed out of the impractical dress shoes he always wears. Double aww.

When a previous victim gathers up the courage to come forward, her testimony leads Yeon-ho and So-hee to realize that the culprit won’t give up on his targets — meaning the latest survivor is in danger. Determined to protect her, Yeon-ho steels himself and gets behind the wheel for the first time in years. He very nearly succumbs to his panic on the road, but So-hee’s advice flashes through his mind. With a deep, determined breath, Yeon-ho pulls himself back together and drives off.

Once again, Yeon-ho confronts the culprit in the nick of time, and the man makes a run for it. Both So-hee’s gift sneakers and judo lessons pay off, allowing Yeon-ho to catch up to the culprit and apprehend him through a series of flips and chokeholds. Though the superintendent ultimately takes the credit for the arrest, our team is satisfied with their efforts and Yeon-ho’s growth.

As for our overarching mystery, the unknown mailman continues to move in the shadows. When even Jung-wook’s father receives a copy of the article, Jae-young and Jung-wook confront the third witness HAN KYUNG-SOO (Han Sang-jo), who’s a humble truck driver. Their palpable derision and scathing intimidation finally pushes Kyung-soo too far, and he snaps. “Had it not been for you both, she could have survived,” Kyung-soo accuses.

Jae-young’s short fuse and inferiority complex eventually drive him into an episode of road rage against a car with tinted windows, and his fast and furious antics cause him to flip over and crash. Trapped in his car, the sniveling Jae-young begs for help — only for the mysterious driver to toss a lighter right at him. The car goes up in flames, burning Jae-young to a crisp as the stranger watches on.

Crash: Episodes 7-8

by solstices

A case buried in the past leaks poison into the present; vengeance begets even more tragedy, trapping its bearer in a vicious cycle of hurt. Amidst filial love and fractured friendships, a life is ruined, while another might finally have a chance at redemption.

EPISODES 7-8

Our case of the week starts out deceptively simple — a car has stopped in the middle of the road. Perhaps the driver dozed off? Unfortunately, the truth is far more macabre. The driver is dead, having been pierced in the neck by a metal piece that flew through his windshield.

An autopsy reveals the metal part is a ratchet buckle, used to secure cargo on trailers. It’s been deliberately cut, which means there’s been foul play, and it aligns with a car carrier rollover that occurred nearby. Looks like that pile-up, and this accidental manslaughter, arose from a case of premeditated murder.

The driver of the car carrier trailer may have survived, but he’s in poor shape. Despite being a mere grunt worker who had to follow orders, he’s being blamed for overloading his trailer, and his guilt is only assuaged somewhat when the TCI team informs him the broken ratchet buckle isn’t his fault. Witness testimonies — such as that of the young driver SEO DONG-WOO (Yang Byung-yeol) — point to a man in a green cap, who was seen carrying bolt cutters. Security isn’t tight around the drivers’ rest area, which means anyone could have snuck in to tamper with the trailer.

Our team pursues the green cap lead, and what do you know, the one driver that wears a green cap turns out to be Kyung-soo. So-hee and Yeon-ho chase him down the highway, but it soon becomes apparent that his brakes aren’t working. Kyung-soo isn’t the perpetrator; he’s the next target.

Thankfully, the inevitable crash ends with no casualties apart from Kyung-soo’s injuries. Amidst the wreckage, Yeon-ho discovers a copy of his news article — and since Kyung-soo’s a poor liar, Yeon-ho quickly finds out the article had been sent to everyone involved. Kyung-soo’s paranoia is at an all-time high, and the astute Yeon-ho infers that he’s hiding something about the truth of his accident.

Yeon-ho soon figures out that the rest stop’s yellow lighting would make blue caps look green as well, just as the team finds two more similar pile-up cases. All the victims have ties to a certain logistics company, and when Dong-ki and Hyun-kyung pay a visit to the CEO, Dong-woo just so happens to be inside — wearing a blue cap and confronting the CEO about an unreasonable contract.

Years ago, Dong-woo’s father had been pressured into signing the exact same contract, which claimed any overloading was voluntary and absolved the company from responsibility. After getting into an accident and being forced to shoulder the damages, Dong-woo’s father sued the CEO for fraud together with his fellow trailer drivers — the same ones involved in the series of accidents — but the rich CEO filed a counterclaim, forcing the others to drop the charges. Alone in his crusade and saddled with debt, Dong-woo’s father had eventually ended his own life.

Embittered and grieving, Dong-woo is now taking revenge on the drivers whom he believes abandoned his father in his time of need. The last one left is Dong-ki’s father, but Dong-woo doesn’t hold a grudge against him — he’s the only one who apologized to his father. Instead, Dong-woo’s final act of revenge is against the CEO, but Hyun-kyung speeds over on her motorbike and apprehends him just in time.

In the interrogation room, Dong-woo confesses to Dong-ki that he’d only planned on gathering evidence at first. Yet when he could find no recourse in the legal system, he realized that merely exposing the CEO’s crimes wouldn’t serve him justice. The CEO’s lack of remorse further stoked Dong-woo’s anger, and thus he’d been driven to extreme ends.

Still, a crime is a crime, and for all that Dong-ki sympathizes with Dong-woo over their shared childhoods with their trailer dads, he has to let Dong-woo know what his actions have snowballed into. When Dong-woo learns the stray ratchet buckle he’d cut had killed a child’s father, he’s wracked with gnawing guilt; he’s inadvertently inflicted his same suffering onto an innocent party.

Heo Jung Do And Kang Ki Doong Form The Ultimate Villain Father-And-Son Duo In "Crash"

Jun 10, 2024

ENA’s “Crash” has released new stills ahead of its upcoming episode!

“Crash” is a crime investigation drama about a team of five investigators, known as Traffic Crime Investigation (TCI) team that tracks crimes that occur on the road.

Spoilers

In the last episode, TCI squad leader Min So Hee (Kwak Sun Young)’s father, veteran taxi driver Min Yong Geon (Yoo Seung Mok), was involved in a traffic accident. The accident occurred during TCI’s crackdown on illegal transportation, triggered by a famous actor’s arrest for drug use in a taxi. Tension rose further with the implication in the teaser that Seoul Police Chief Pyo Myeong Hak (Heo Jung Do)’s son Pyo Jeong Wook (Kang Ki Doong) might be linked to the incident.

In fact, Pyo Myeong Hak and his son Pyo Jeong Wook are pivotal to the mystery surrounding a car accident 10 years ago involving Cha Yeon Ho (Lee Min Ki). Among the three witnesses, Yang Jae Young (Heo Ji Won) was killed and Han Kyung Soo (Han Sang Jo) disappeared. Pyo Jeong Wook becomes the latest target of the assailant, who aimed at their lives. Before this, when Han Kyung Soo threatened Pyo Myeong Hak with exposing everything to the police, Pyo Myung Hak devised a sinister plan, vowing to ensure Kyung Soo wouldn’t recklessly divulge information.

“Crash” has been weaving breadcrumbs about another hidden truth by these ultimate villains regarding the accident a decade ago. Therefore, TCI’s pursuit to uncover these breadcrumbs and reveal the truth will likely be the climax of the remaining storyline.

Crash: Episodes 9-10

by solstices

No crime can be hidden forever, and it’s time for the true culprits to be held accountable. These opponents may be intimidatingly formidable, but our team has the smarts, skills, and synergy to counter their schemes.

EPISODES 9-10

Once again, Jung-wook proves his scummy arrogance by winding up at the center of yet another case. After getting high on drugs, Jung-wook had recklessly taken the wheel, driving erratically and knocking down a motorist. So-hee’s dad witnessed it, and he gave chase in an attempt to convince Jung-wook to turn himself in. Irritated, Jung-wook deliberately swerved into Dad’s taxi multiple times, causing the crash. Thankfully, Dad is still alive, albeit injured.

The TCI team takes on the case, discovering that the car in question is an unlicensed taxi — a remnant of the case Tae-joo had failed to wrap up properly. When they track down the hostess that was also in the car, she pushes the blame onto the unlicensed taxi driver, claiming that both she and Jung-wook disembarked before the accident.

On the contrary, the car’s event data recorder reveals that two more safety belts were buckled, suggesting a total of three people in the car. Furthermore, a forensics examination turns up Jung-wook’s blood and clothes fibers in the driver’s seat — but all this circumstantial evidence is moot when the driver makes a timely (and false) confession. Alas, Jung-wook walks free.

So-hee’s anguish is heartbreakingly palpable, spurring Yeon-ho to show her his suspect board and open up about his own accident. All he knows is that the three students had witnessed the crash while driving Commissioner-General Pyo’s car without a license, and they’d claimed Kyung-soo had been behind the wheel. With Jung-wook’s track record of lying, that’s not convincing in the least.

Talking about Kyung-soo, he’s alive, but in poor shape. The masked vigilante tortures information out of him, then uses the confession to threaten Jung-wook into meeting him. Meanwhile, Commissioner-General Pyo is feeling the heat, prompting him to strike first. Temporarily removing Chae-man from his post on the pretext that he’s dragging his feet on Jae-young’s case, he has Tae-joo take over as TCI’s leader. (Bleh, I know I asked for more Tae-joo, but not like this!)

Chae-man may be facing disciplinary action, but nothing can quell a detective’s spirit. Giving Yeon-ho his old investigation notebook, Chae-man reveals more details about his accident — from the suspicious four-minute delay between both of Kyung-soo’s 911 calls, to Commissioner-General Pyo’s involvement in the case. Chae-man points Yeon-ho towards the reporter who wrote the news article, allowing Yeon-ho and So-hee to obtain additional crime scene photos that help them piece together the events of that night.

In addition, Chae-man finally shares that the driver of the black car walks with a pronounced limp — and so does Jung-seob’s son-in-law KIM MIN-SUNG (Kim Dae-ho), who has a prosthetic leg. After getting employed in forensics, Min-sung had found out through the case files that the tire marks on Hyun-soo didn’t match Yeon-ho’s car. Worse yet, there were two sets of tire marks on Hyun-soo — the culprit ran her over, then reversed over her.

Crash: Episodes 11-12 (Final)

by solstices

In the end, Crash concludes much the way it started, with a dose of humor and a great deal of heart. No good deed goes unpunished, but our heroes bounce back in an unexpected way — one that’s only made possible through the sheer strength and sincerity of their bond.

EPISODES 11-12

To my surprise, Commissioner-General Pyo’s kidnapping doesn’t last very long. Although Hyun-soo’s father is prepared to drive them both to their ends, the mention of a report proving Jung-wook’s guilt gives him pause, and his hesitation allows Chae-man to put a swift stop to the abduction.

At Jung-wook’s trial, Kyung-soo testifies against both father and son, but concrete evidence is needed for a conviction. Our team follows up on the report about the tire marks, which had been swiped from Min-sung’s house by Tae-joo. It’s now in Commissioner-General Pyo’s hands, and Tae-joo advises him to reveal the report himself and control the narrative before the TCI team gets the chance to. With that, Commissioner-General Pyo submits the report to the court alongside the claim that he’d received it through anonymous mail, painting himself as an upright citizen who would place justice above his son.

Blindsided by his father’s callous betrayal, Jung-wook bursts into hysterical, tearful laughter. (Such spine-chilling acting from Kang Ki-doong!) If his father can desert his own son just to save himself, then two can play at that game. Since it’s come to this, Jung-wook finally admits to the murder — then details how Commissioner-General Pyo tampered with evidence and covered up the crime.

The testimony of the report’s author corroborates that Commissioner-General Pyo took the report and never followed up on it, effectively confirming his guilt. Even better, an anonymous insider (whose name starts with “Lee” and ends with “Tae-joo”) submits a letter to the police’s auditing director, exposing Commissioner-General Pyo’s corruption and collusion with Jae-young’s father.

At the end of it all, Yeon-ho gets the final word against Commissioner-General Pyo: “It’s a relief your son takes after you.” Just as he threw his son under the bus, Jung-wook is now throwing him to the wolves in order to reduce his own sentence. Ultimately, our villains get their just desserts — ten and a half years of incarceration for Jae-young’s father, twelve years and a hefty fine for Commissioner-General Pyo, and twenty years for Jung-wook. They’ll all be languishing in prison for a long time to come.

Alas for our team, what awaits them after their successful case is not a reward, but the repercussions of apprehending someone numerous ranks above them. The TCI team is dissolved and assigned to different posts, much to their dismay. So-hee finds Yeon-ho deep in thought on the rooftop, where he admits that contrary to his teammates’ worries, he’s actually relieved he’s being sent to a remote island; he’s been wanting to take a break from the bustling city, after all.

Sincerely, Yeon-ho expresses his gratitude to So-hee for everything she’s done for him. It’s all thanks to her that he’s managed to come this far. She returns the sentiment, to which Yeon-ho promises that he’ll pick Dad up once he’s discharged from the hospital, no matter how far away he may be. Aw, it’s a bittersweet feeling looking at the empty TCI office, which once used to teem with stacks of case files and the boisterous energy of our beloved team.

One year later, we catch up with Yeon-ho on Hwapyung Island, where he’s one of only four officers there. Rather than the fancy cars of the city, his traffic cop duties here have him overseeing tractors and tipsy farmers, LOL. Yeon-ho’s on friendly terms with the high-school student SEUNG-AH (Han Ji-won), whose father is too busy maintaining his vacation home to pay her much attention. Having moved from the city, the father-daughter duo often find themselves the subject of the locals’ ire for hogging most of the island’s resources and revenue.

Seung-ah’s relationship with her quick-tempered father may be strained, but it’s not for a lack of caring. When Seung-ah heads out to a friend’s birthday party late at night and doesn’t return by morning, her father is beside himself with worry, and his despairing heart only sinks further when Seung-ah’s shoes are discovered on the bank of the island’s reservoir. Furthermore, Seung-ah’s schoolmates reveal that she’s a loner, but they’ve witnessed her spending time with a boy. It’s too soon to make any conclusions though, and Yeon-ho resolves to investigate Seung-ah’s disappearance.

That means Yeon-ho is unable to join the long-awaited TCI reunion back in Seoul, but never fear, because their dinner soon ends up turning into an assist mission to help their friend in need. With that, the understaffed island force now has four extra officers, and our gung-ho squad is back in action. Yay, I wasn’t expecting such a reunion, but it’s so fitting for them!

A search of the island turns up a fragment of a car bumper in the woods, alongside Seung-ah’s phone keychain. It seems an accident occurred last night, but all the cars of that particular model are intact. Worse yet, there are barely any CCTVs on the island, but thankfully farmers have installed their own to prevent crop theft, and one with a bird’s eye view captured the car’s movements that night.

Retracing the path, our team arrives at a mountain owned by KI HYUNG-SOO (Yoon Deuk-bi), but he has an alibi. There’d been a village gathering that night, and he’d driven three villagers home — all of whom vouch for his sobriety, and his innocence. The village head (Shim So-young yet again, hee) is particularly defensive, refusing to cooperate with any further investigation.
