Frankly Speaking: Episodes 1-2

by DaebakGrits

When a news anchor loses his ability to censor his innermost thoughts and opinions, his already rocky career takes a nosedive. On the plus side, his unfiltered comments put the comedy in this rom-com, while the romance between our news anchor and variety show writer begins with an awkward — and smelly — meet-hoot.

EPISODES 1-2

This isn’t the first time dramaland has introduced us to an aspiring news anchor with an involuntary habit of revealing the truth, but unlike his Pinocchio counterpart, SONG KI-BAEK (Go Kyung-pyo) hasn’t always lacked a functioning frontal lobe. No, when we first meet Ki-baek, he’s so good at suppressing his inner thoughts and maintaining his facade of perfect professionalism that he suffers from stress-induced IBS, and he nearly has a blowout when he becomes trapped in an elevator with variety show writer OHN WOO-JOO (Kang Hanna).

Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, his reputation takes a dive when his co-anchor’s husband crashes their news broadcast to expose her affair with a celebrity on live television. Although Ki-baek is an innocent bystander who gets caught in the middle of all the on-air drama — and takes the brunt of the husband’s misplaced ire — he doesn’t sit back and enjoy the spilled tea like the rest of us. Instead, he attempts to salvage the broadcast and keep on reporting the news, which results in some hilarious memes that make him not only an internet joke but a less desirable candidate for the coveted news anchor spot. You’d think his extreme professionalism would have earned him some brownie points, but not in this dramaverse.

Meanwhile, Woo-joo is also experiencing some unwanted side effects from the same scandal. It turns out the celebrity with whom Ki-baek’s co-anchor was having an affair was slated to be a guest star on Woo-joo’s variety show, Men on the Run. She needs a replacement ASAP, and given Ki-baek’s recent fall from grace and his flatulence-filled elevator encounter with Woo-joo, she suspects he’s the perfect schmuck to fill the recently vacated spot on her show. Her instincts are screaming that Ki-baek is not as flawless as he appears, and exposing his inner awkwardness will make for excellent variety show fodder.

Ki-baek, however, is reluctant to accept her invitation because, well, once you star on a variety show, there’s apparently no way to recover your career — or dignity. Problem is, though, Ki-baek doesn’t have much say in the matter because, off camera, news anchors are just like any other low-level employee who must succumb to the whims of their superiors. In Ki-baek’s case, that superior is MANAGER KIM SANG-JIN (Jo Han-chul), whose hypocritical and flighty personality has a way of making Ki-baek (internally) miserable. And so, as much as Ki-baek tries to passively discourage Woo-joo’s interest with fictional injuries, Manager Kim accepts Woo-joo’s invitation on Ki-baek’s behalf.

We know now that Song Ki Baek is not from a rich family but I don`t know why  he had to fake his background. Just to avance his career?

I think it's because he is the eldest son and his whole family is counting on him becoming "their savior". Him looking like a rich boy will open doors for him a lot more easily.

Frankly Speaking: Episodes 3-4

by DaebakGrits

Our news anchor returns to work with very little fanfare and finds himself at a crossroads. Will he continue to live a lie to appease those who undervalue him, or will he open his mouth and tell the truth? It’s a tough choice, but our variety show writer is there to help him through it.

EPISODES 3-4

We begin this week’s episodes with Ki-baek’s origin story. As a wee boy, his family was even worse off financially than they are in the present, and when the loan sharks came a knockin’, his mother would take Ki-baek and his brothers to a nearby playground to distract them and keep them safe. Because Ki-baek was young and innocent, he was not fully aware of the threat the loan sharks posed, so he didn’t understand why he should lie — something he’d been previously taught was bad — to avoid the men looking for his family. That’s when his mother explained to him that sometimes lies could be good, especially if they were used to protect you.

Time passes, and we see Ki-baek using more lies to fit in with his peers and to passively cultivate an image that’s outwardly more appealing to others. He mostly skirts the truth with lies of omission, failing to correct his classmates and coworkers when they make false assumptions about his life. Case in point, after a night out drinking with his coworkers, he truthfully tells them that he lives nearby in a fancy high rise, but he fails to confess that he’s housesitting for his sunbae who actually owns the apartment. (Yeah, the very sunbae that we learned last week is returning to Seoul and kicking Ki-baek to the curb.)

In the present, we join Ki-baek and Woo-joo on the beach where they’ve washed up after their impromptu cliff diving excursion. As they cough up sea water, they bicker back and forth until Woo-joo finally realizes that her good intentions were entirely misplaced. Ki-baek walks off in a huff… only to realize Ji-hoo has returned to Seoul without him. He humbles himself in order to beg Woo-joo for a ride back to the city, but because she doesn’t want either of them to get sea water on the interior of her new car, they both change into some rather embarrassing Men on the Run outfits.

These are the kind of outfits that scream “look at me,” so of course our OTP can’t simply enjoy their car ride in peace. The drama gods must interfere so that Ki-baek’s “RUN BRO” butt cheeks get some much needed exposure, and that is how our characters end up at the hospital after Woo-joo passes out from a mild case of hypothermia. While this series of scenes sets the audience up for a good laugh, it culminates with Ki-baek coaching a child to lie in order to gain the attention of the hospital staff who’d been ignoring his pleas for them to check on his unconscious brother — a somber reminder that lying not only protects but gets you ahead in this unfair world.

And speaking of things that are unfair, when Ki-baek returns to work after his forced hiatus, he’s ostracized by his co-workers and not assigned any work. And to add insult to injury, Manager Kim still gives Ki-baek the opportunity to interview for the coveted news anchor position — but only as a formality since the station has already picked the guy they want to fill the role. Even though he knows he’s just there to round out the numbers, Ki-baek attends the interview as a matter of pride.

At the same time, Woo-joo has been going through her fair share of workplace woes, too. For starters, no one likes her new variety show idea, claiming it’s outdated and unoriginal, and to make matters worse, her former hoobae, LEE HA-YOUNG (Lee Bom-sori), has now joined the team. Ha-young was completely hapless when she was a newbie under Woo-joo, but somehow she managed to become a head writer first and surpass Woo-joo in success. Woo-joo is still the head writer for their upcoming project, but Ha-young has a higher salary.

Dejected after another day of overhearing others doubt her abilities, Woo-joo wanders into Ki-baek’s interview, and it’s not going well. The switch has been flipped again, and he’s struggling to maintain his composure while the film and production crew openly ridicule him through his earpiece. He’s just itching to give them a piece of his mind. Woo-joo realizes that he’s in trouble, and — claiming that she’s his stylist — runs onto the news set to give him a last minute pep talk. She pats his chest and tells him to protect his heart, a reference to one of their earlier conversations when she told him that he needs to cheer himself up during tough times.

Her words have a calming effect on Ki-baek, who tamps down on his panic and delivers the sample news script perfectly. Even the naysayers behind the cameras compliment his delivery, but they also assume Ki-baek is another willing participant in the “RickRoll'D show” the network is putting on to keep up the appearance of fairness in their hiring process. As Ki-baek listens to their conversation through his earpiece, he’s reminded of when Woo-joo asked him what the news means to him, and he chooses this moment to answer the question and reveal that he loves the news because he wants to speak the truth.

Without a doubt, the boy is Kim Jeong-Heon `s son. They mentioned when they broke up and the age of the boy fits.

Of course, there has to be more events.... I already knew that he will want to know his son (he doesn`t know he has a son) and I am sure Woo-Joo will let him. I hope the boy will have a relationship with his biological father and with Ki-Baek, his future dad. It is predictable but I don`t care if the show will give us good moments.

Go Kyung Pyo And Kang Han Na's Romance Blossoms As Contestant And Writer Of Dating Show In "Frankly Speaking"

May 15, 2024
by M Lim

JTBC’s new rom-com drama “Frankly Speaking” has unveiled new stills ahead of tonight’s episode!

“Frankly Speaking” is a romantic comedy starring Go Kyung Pyo as Song Ki Baek, a rising news anchor whose life takes a (literally) shocking turn when he is electrocuted in an accident, leading him to develop a strange condition that prevents him from lying. Kang Han Na stars as On Woo Ju, a passionate variety show writer who is willing to do anything to make a program entertaining.

Spoilers

When On Woo Ju, whose career is going downhill, spots potential gold in the brutally honest Song Ki Baek, she casts him to star in her new dating reality show. With Song Ki Baek grappling with recent unemployment and eviction from the luxury apartment he was living in, Song Ki Baek has little choice but to agree, and the two meet each other as a contestant and the main writer of the show.

While the premise of the program demands that Song Ki Baek kindles romance with fellow contestants, it’s On Woo Ju who captures his attention.

Likewise, On Woo Ju finds herself drawn to Song Ki Baek, feeling compelled to look after him amid his new challenges as a variety show novice and as someone struggling with the aftermath of the electrifying incident that left him with an unfiltered mouth.

The newly released still captures Song Ki Baek and On Woo Ju alone on a serene mountain at night. Their evolving emotions are reflected in their meaningful gazes at each other. In another image, Song Ki Baek tenderly kneels in front of On Woo Ju who has injured her ankle. Even from behind, his genuine concern for her well-being is palpable. Amidst this, heartfelt words flow freely from his lips, raising curiosity about whether this will mark the beginning of a blossoming connection between them.

The production team commented, “Please stay tuned to witness their emotional journey during the first shoot of the dating show ‘Couple Paradise’ to see how their feelings sway and what dramatic changes occur between them.”

The next episode of “Frankly Speaking” airs on May 15 at 8:50 p.m. KST.

Time for ep 6! :coolshades:

EDIT: Omo! The end of ep 6 :scream:

Why are Ki Baek and Woo Joo so cute? Am totally rooting for them :fullofhearts:

Ki Baek's and Jung Heon's first love is a snake, and I don't trust Jung Heon as far as I can throw him.

There must be a good reason for Woo Joo not wanting to have anything to do with him anymore.
