“The Worst of Evil” is a crime-action drama that tells the journey of police officer Kang Joon Mo (Ji Chang Wook) as he goes on an undercover mission to take down a major drug operation based in Gangnam, the center of drug trafficking between Korea, China, and Japan during the 1990s.

 

Ji Chang Wook plays undercover detective Kang Joon Mo who disguises himself as Kwon Seung Ho within the Gangnam alliance that is at the center of a major drug operation. With strong resolve, Kang Joon Mo will do anything to achieve his goal, and he is a courageous character who shines even brighter in the face of danger.

 

 

While undercover, Kang Joon Mo becomes increasingly more intertwined with the Gangnam drug cartel’s boss Jung Ki Chul (Wi Ha Joon). Ji Chang Wook created a great sense of immersion through the portrayal of his character gradually changing as he faced various situations and emotions as detective Park Joon Mo and gang member Kwon Seung Ho.

Set in the 1990s, The Worst of Evil is a story of the journey of police officer Joon Mo (Ji Chang Wook), who infiltrates the base of a Korea-China-Japan drug trade syndicate in Gangnam, aiming to dismantle its operations.

In the K-drama, actor Wi Ha Joon takes on the role of Jung Ki Chul, boss of the Gangnam Union, which controls the Korea-China-Japan drug cartel. 

To give a glimpse of the actor in his role, Disney+ released stills on August 24th. The actor is seen clad in a suit and embodying the sinister demeanor of a gangster.  

 

 

The character Jung Ki Chul is a man who had a painful childhood and rose from the bottom to his current status, solely focusing on success. He is willing to do whatever it takes, using any means necessary, to reach his goals. As he sits on the pinnacle of success, he reunites with his first love, Yoo Eui Jung (Im Se Mi) - Park Joon Mo's (Ji Chang Wook) wife and a narcotics officer - which makes things complicated. 

Director Han Dong Wook expressed amazement at Wi Ha Joon's performance, stating, "Wi Ha Joon is very passionate. He takes one step further without hesitating. His acting is extremely nuanced and detailed". Action director Park Geun Beom also praised Wi Ha Joon's action skills as the best he has seen among actors, fueling anticipation for the actor's performance in the Disney+ series The Worst of Evil.

Ji Chang-wook vs. Wie Ha-joon in The Worst of Evil

As if the thought of Ji Chang-wook (If You Wish Upon Me) and Wie Ha-joon (Little Women) headlining a drama together wasn’t enough to whet our appetites, Disney+ has dropped a fresh set of stills for their upcoming crime-action noir The Worst of Evil to make sure that happens.

In the drama, police officer Park Joon-mo (Ji Chang-wook) goes deep into the 1990s Gangnam underbelly to infiltrate a crime syndicate. While on the job, he gets entangled with a mob boss who has been quickly rising in the ranks: Jung Ki-chul (Wie Ha-joon). But it doesn’t seem as easy as getting in, getting intel, and getting out, as the story promises a complex look at Joon-mo’s character as he changes as a consequence of his cover.

 

The PD promises some deep, dark acting from Ji Chang-wook, and this is me wondering if the depths of this character are what lured Wookie back to the action genre (because let’s face it — he didn’t do it just because I’ve been begging). Wie Ha-joon’s character also sounds equally layered, with a brutal backstory and single-minded determination that has enabled him to get to where he is. And while we know these two leads will have some complicated interactions within the crime ring, it gets even more complicated with… a love triangle?

Our female lead is Im Se-mi (Duty After School), playing police officer Yoo Eui-jung. She’s married to Joon-mo, but she’s also noted as Ki-chul’s first love. So that could get interesting fast — with her husband undercover in the very drug trafficking ring she’s working to take down, and the man in charge being a sworn enemy who actually loved (loves?) her. Oh boy, I’m getting Heartless City vibes now, and that’s a good thing.

With filmmaker Han Dong-wook (Man in Love) and PD Park Geun-beom directing, and scripts by Jang Min-seok (Secret Reunion), Disney+’s The Worst of Evil will be launching on September 27.

Finally, BIBI will play the role of Hae Ryun, who plays a vital role in the Chinese drug factory’s distribution. Hae Ryun travels to Korea for a deal with Jung Ki Chul, but after she meets Kang Joon Mo, she winds up causing an unexpected new incident.

It’s hard not to be seduced by the pretty in Disney+’s new posters for the upcoming The Worst of Evil, luring us to follow our charismatic leads into the dark underground of 1990s Gangnam. Touted as the ~cinematic~ edition, the crime-action’s striking character posters allow us to get up close and personal, but oh to be a fly in that car with Ji Chang-wook (If You Wish Upon Me) and Wie Ha-joon (Little Women).

As our protagonist, the former plays police officer Park Joon-mo, who is tasked with the dangerous job of going undercover to take down a rising crime ring. This means Joon-mo has to gain the trust of the powerful mob boss Jung Ki-chul (Wie Ha-joon). But the conflict is not simply good versus evil, and our characters have to grapple with the internal struggle of whether they can give up everything in order to get what they want.

 

This holds true for Im Se-mi (Duty After School) as well, playing fellow police officer Yoo Eui-jung. Although she’s part of the same team investigating the gang’s drug trafficking crimes, Eui-jung is in a tricky position with personal investment in the case: Joon-mo is her husband and she has past ties with Ki-chul.

However, it looks like we might be getting some kind of love (?) square with singer BIBI (a.k.a. Kim Hyung-seo)(Hopeless) in her drama debut as Hae-ryun. She plays a key role in the Chinese division of drug manufacturing and travels to South Korea to propose a deal with Ki-chul. That is, until she crosses paths with Joon-mo and a new plan develops.

Kim Hyeong Seo, known for her presence as a singer, is set to solidify her position as an actress by playing the critical drug distributor Hae Ryeon in The Worst of Evil, where she controls the Korean-Chinese-Japanese drug cartel.

 

 

The Worst of Evil (written by Jang Min Seok and directed by Han Dong Wook) is a crime action drama that depicts the process of detective Joon Mo (Ji Chang Wook) infiltrating an organization to dismantle the central gang in the 1990s' Korean-Chinese-Japanese drug trade.

As Joon Mo gets closer to the truth about the drug cartel that Ki Chul (Wi Ha Joon) planned, Hae Ryeon's distinct presence will become more evident. Playing a pivotal role in the massive drug trade spanning three Asian countries, she will undeniably influence both the Gangnam Alliance and Joon Mo, as well as other foreign traders, creating a tense atmosphere.
