I hope I am not annoying anyone here but I generally like to be frank and to be clear I am not generalizing to include ALL idols. There are good actors who are idols  BUT these are few and far between.

Then to read about the censure they might be getting from her binding scene and her screen kisses and then now flak about her "seeming cool" to PBG at after party...

Give the girl a break....she did a fantastic job given her material...still one of my fave actresses and the fact we are so caught up with the Yeongon couple is in no small part due to her...

KYJ and YJG are still quite close, they've know each other even waaaayy before 2008 (Iljimae), I think they even know each other's families. Have you seen their interactions on and off camera? And they also have a project together until 2014. In 2015, Yoojung still mentioned YJG in her interview, said that he's one of her co-stars that left long-lasting impression on her. So for Yoojung, it's not true once the drama is over, everything is over.

She keep in touch and has a very good relationship with many co-stars, male and female. And not just co-stars but staff and directors from her previous dramas. Although I would ship CP and Ra On - not too sure about PBG and KYJ. They still have a long career in front of them and not to say they can't date each other but why can't they remain friends? It's very old-fashioned to think that you will be in a long lasting forever relationship at this point. Go out with friends, mingle , go to a noraebang etc.

Because I noticed comments earlier after episode 18 aired that people are sick of people either being either bored by the drama or things are progressing too fast I want to say that I've always been one of the people who never really complained about the pace of the drama. I adored that the drama took its time during the romantic moments and I was never bored by that because PD-nim knew when to stop and continue with the plot.

As a shipper of course those moments were and are first place in gold and will always be treasured.

I was also always very happy with the minor albeit cliche sageuk plot going on aside from the romance. I accepted it would be very basic but was also happy it pulled off some fresh twists. I don't need a drama to reinvent the wheel to make me happy.

Like I LOVE Nice Guy which is such a classic melodrama but like MDBC it was produced in such a gorgeous way, the cinematography was beautiful (apparently the same cinematographer who worked for Nice Guy was an advisor for MDBC), an amazing and very fitting OST and with a talented cast. It's all about how it all works out on screen. Does it feel dated like for example Cinderella and the Four Knights? Or does it feel fresh and new despite the classic plot like Nice Guy and MDBC?

But I was also very vocal about my concerns very early on. Starting with bringing in Ha Yeon very late, making me wonder if they actually changed the plot because they saw how well the romance between Ra On and Lee Yeong worked out on screen. The posters suggesting Ha Yeon in a bigger role and then cutting down her role like she is almost only belonging to the minor cast makes it look like it. CSB still got a decent amount of screentime but I felt her scenes lacked the most in the whole drama because I would say 95% she repeated the same theme only with minor changes in the words.

Continuing when the wedding wasn't happening until only a couple episodes away from the finale.

I liked the pace for the angst to start. I thought episode 13 was a wonderful moment for Ra On and Lee Yeong to be separated and then we would see them finding their way to eachother again. And of course we did. Yet starting from episode 14 or 15 I began to feel more uneasy and I think it was showing in my comments. I was very emotional. Until then I had trusted the writer but suddenly something started to feel off for me and my trust wavered.

And here comes another reason into play why I mentioned Nice Guy earlier is because with both – NG and MDBC – I had the same feelings during the last episode.

Both dramas suffered through the curse of liveshooting. The last scene in Nice Guy was filmed in the afternoon, outside of Seoul, the day the last episode aired.

So both final episodes felt uneven and cluttered together to me. Some things that happened made no sense at all. I won't spoil anything for Nice Guy because I encourage you to watch it yourself. But those who know the drama maybe know what I mean and why I feel that way.

But I don't blame the cast or the crew. They had the job to finish this drama and they made it happen. And episode 18 still looks very good for an episode finished last-minute. Just like the last episode of Nice Guy looked good as well. But that doesn't mean it can't have flaws. It was just the first time I thought: „well maybe one more episode would've done a good job for this drama.“ And I was really against a extension because again I trusted the writer to wrap everything up nicely. And I think that only happened partly.

So what exactly did and didn't I like about episode 18?

This introduction sounds so fatalistic like I absolutely hated the last episode. But that's not the case because on the surface the episode did a good job in tying all the loose ends together, not leaving one thing hanging. Or did it?

I can say some minor things I definitely noticed was the editing problems this episode had. I was bit sad to see some choppy editing during Lee Yeong visiting his mother's tomb. I would've thought they did some cuts a lot smoother, especially when he starts crying for his mother. I think it's lovely that after years of being traumatized by the sudden death of the woman who taught him to be the man he is now and his father not even remotely trying to investigate back then, he is finally free now. I thought this moment wasn't given enough space to make that clear to the viewer. And the lack in editing made it even worse. I usually would lose myself in the pain of Lee Yeong during these scenes but the editing made it impossible.

So where to start?

What worked for me:

I know many fellow Moonlighter were unhappy with the lack of YeongOn moments but I never really was. Of course I could've been very happy with a drama which has no angst and no separation in it. But I was prepared and I thought the separation was done in a way I never thought it was noble idiocy from Ra On's point of view or that Lee Yeong was blaming her. It was done in a way it was believable and I was able to see it hurts them both not to be together. And despite all the pain I wouldn't want to erase the bracelet cutting scene, not even for another „bedscene“ or another kiss. Because to grow as a couple things need to be difficult and painful sometimes.

And if this drama – including PD-nim and writer-nim – proved one thing they're good at it's the love story between Ra On and Lee Yeong. And I loved how much space they got in this episode. Especially in the beginning with Ra On entering the palace with Dasan and of course the reveal that she is wearing his bracelet made me go „hallelujah“ while watching the episode live. Everything was coming together... from Lee Yeong giving the Ra On the bracelet, to them cutting it and then Ra On collecting all the beads and wearing it. It showed that no matter what they will always meet again and be together. Just like the merchant told Lee Yeong.

That's all I wanted because Lee Yeong discovering it also assured him that they're both in this relationship. No matter what and how many obstacles they have to overcome.

I also loved that Ha Yeon witnessing this moment. And I mentioned the symbolism of the closing door for her as well. First it was Ra On watching Ha Yeon staying with the man she loves and the door closing on her. But when the door closed for Ha Yeon it was like despite the heartbreak for her she understood that no matter what she won't be able to change Lee Yeong's heart.

It's also always the question how much of what we saw was also seen by Ha Yeon? Did she witness the very intimate moment of Lee Yeong pulling off Ra On's mask? Did she listen to him saying that he was afraid it wouldn't be Ra On but somebody else? Or did she „just“ witness the tenderness of Lee Yeong cradling his lover's face?

I know with my „spindle theory“ I created a monster but please keep in mind I'm not a pervert. I'm a close observer of scenes and also the vibes certain scenes give me. And I thought the most erotic scenes are those who are not meant to be erotic. That's why I say Lee Yeong pulling off the mask is so very intimate – just like him taking off Ra On's gat:

The difference between the door scenes is very clear:

As you can see with Ra On we only see her sad eyes and the door is closing; meaning whatever she is seeing – Lee Yeong and Ha Yeon – is not meant to be and not to be worried about.

But with Ha Yeon, we see our OTP first, Lee Yeong caressing Ra On gently, then it switches to heartbroken Ha Yeon, she starts closing the door and we switch to her pov again, watching the door close on the couple which is meant to be: Ra On and Lee Yeong.

That's why I actually liked Ha Yeon best in this last episode because she did what I expected her to do. She stepped down from the title as Crown Princess, not only for Lee Yeong's happiness but for herself. And I'm happy she got her happy ending whatever and whereever it may be. I regret she was underused but I'm glad as well the drama didn't go down the classic 2^nd female lead turns evil road. I will say though she was annoying towards the end but the last episode redeemed her for me.

So overall the romance between Lee Yeong and Ra On wrapped up nicely. I never wavered in regards of their ending. Even though I had a small breakdown in which I was confused on what the writer would do.

I also was very glad this drama didn't follow the history but made Lee Yeong king because as I said before after establishing him as a person who is made to be a good king it was impossible at least to me to give a good reason to believe it would be good for him to leave the palace. There will always be people who cry out when drama either change history or don't change history. To me it worked fine. I think the novel ending wouldn't have made sense for the drama at this point.

Of course I thought Ra On would end up being his queen but after giving it some thought and as I mentioned earlier I'm glad that they don't rush things. I firmly believe that Ra On will one day enter the palace as the queen but not until Lee Yeong is satisfied with the world he creates for her and his people. And also she needs to explore herself as a woman. So I'm very happy with how their love story ended... or should I say started?

The last scene was a piece of art to me. Just like the last scene in Nice Guy. Beautifully shot with so much symbolism with the cosmo flowers and Ra On and Lee Yeong walking freely, hand in hand. And my OTP in couple hanboks... kissing... What could I wish more for?

What worked partly for me:

The uproar during and after the episode because of Yoon Sung's death was massive and I understand the reactions. I, however, feel strangely content with it because I saw it coming miles away. The foreshadowing during the talk between Lee Yeong and Yoon Sung was very classic. I'm just happy he didn't die by the hand of Kim Hun or at least by his order – we know now why – but it was his own choice. I thought the scene was done in a good way. I loved it was a strangely intimate moment between him and Ra On. He died as a happy man in the arms of the woman he loves.

I think @NRGchick mentioned TMETS in which a certain character dies under similar circumstances. But I have to say TMETS lacked in many aspects and the writing was very weak and did everything to remove all the characters which were considered as obstacles to the couple in the last episode.

Meanwhile Yoon Sung's death wasn't meant as that. He was never an obstacle to Ra On and Lee Yeong. He would've gladly loved her from afar and still been a good friend to both, Ra On and Lee Yeong.

My problem though was how there was a lack of mourning. We got this wonderful scene with Lee Yeong mourning over Byung Yeon's „death“ and Yoon Sung mourning as well but Yoon Sung who actually died doesn't get the same treatment?

I probably have to blame the liveshooting and the lack of a additional episode but I thought it wasn't handled in a way that gave me closure.

Of course what worked for me was Lee Yeong taking down the Kim Clan but it felt rushed, even though in a way I can barely complain about it because it tied all the loose ends together. But I think it all happened in like 5 minutes and was very anticlimatic. Also because the reveal of Kim Hun being responsible for Lee Yeong's mother's death... But I liked how they brought back the Little Princess. They didn't forget about her. So in a way it worked for me because now she can speak again and both, her and Lee Yeong, can live without a trauma.

By the way I always wondered about the lack of emotion when it comes to Princess Myeong-Eun. Is she daughter to Lee Yeong's mother as well? If so I find it terrible we never got to see her reaction and her feelings in regards of the death.

What didn't work for me:

Unlike others I could've lived without the proposal between Princess Myeong-Eun and Master Jung. I know some of you needed or at least wanted to see some closure but I never felt that way. I thought them kissing made it clear these two have a future together and whatever happens between them will be off-screen. But then we got 2 or 3 minutes of a proposal that kinda interrupted the flow for me. Until then I never found their scenes annoying but liked their dynamic and they were the comical relief in each episode. But I found the proposal scene very annoying because I rather would've seen more YeongOn moments or more importantly Ra On with her parents.

And this leads me to something that threw me off already in episode 17. The whole issue in regards of Hong Gyeong-nae.

What was his purpose?

Why was he there? Aside from being Ra On's father?

I'm SO very disappointed in how the writer did NOT tie the loose ends when it comes to him. There were so many chances and possibilities to use Hong Gyeong-nae to make the political plot much more interesting. He could've been a friend to the king – there was a short moment in episode 17 I thought they recognized eachother but actually they didn't – who had a different point of views when it comes to politics (apparently siding a bit with Lee Yeong's mother) and became an easy target for Kim Hun's scheme to remove him as a close friend and ally to the king.

But nothing. The writer brought him in just for the sake of „we mentioned him so many times, so we simply have to bring him in“.

Of course you could argue that he is Ra On's father and it was important to her see him. And I agree but we didn't even get closure on their story. We didn't get a reunion. I would've been okay if the writer had told me that Ra On's parents don't live together but they're getting close to eachother again. Because the love is still there between Ra On's mother and her father and 10 years changes people, so they need to get to know eachother again.

I would've loved to see Ra On with her parents because I always thought this was so important to her. But here we didn't get any closure either.

When you look at it the writers wasted a big opportunity with Hong Gyeong-nae and this basically ruined the whole political plot including him for me and that's why I feel not satisfied with how the things wrapped up in episode 18 and prior to it.

Yes every loose end is tied together but not all of them in a nice or perfect way.

OVERALL:

What worked best for in the last episode was what worked best for me throughout the drama and that's the love story of Ra On and Lee Yeong.

But aside from episode 18 not satisfying me completely this drama is on my favourite dramas of all time-list because as a whole drama it comes close to being perfect because it made me feel things.

Unfortunately the fact the last episodes are so uneven and it turns out it's those last episodes which prevents me from saying it's a 100% perfect drama makes it bittersweet to rewatch and have to say I skipped the minutes with Kim Hun and the evil Queen and thought the last episode would be perfect with only resolving everything in regards of YeongOn.

That being said despite this very honest post on episode 18 I deeply adore this drama and I'm proud of the cast and crew of what they have accomplished.

And I got my happy ending for my OTP and that's all that matters, right?

 

 

two points... the lack of mourning on Yoonsung and Hong Kyung Nae.  

as i mentioned in a post earlier, YS's death had been foreshadowed and i saw it coming but it's entirely different from accepting it.  I guess what made it harder for me is he died just like that. No mourning, not even a mention about it afterwards. He was there always, almost always there to save the day and now that he's gone, no one even mourned for his death.  It saddened me a lot how his story was wrapped up although dying in the arms of the woman he loved was perfect.  I believe he deserve more from LY and from BY if not from anyone else. In my mind, i need to see that.  

HGN... i had aired my concerns and discontent of his presence early on.  I felt that his character appearance should have been used to the fullest, not just to make RO suffer more, for the lovers to separate or for among other things just be there for the interrogation.  I had wished that when he showed up the main concern of LY about the connection between the King, PM and HGN will finally be answered but no, it was never even mentioned.  I may be wrong.  

over-all i love this drama as you do, again in line with my well-kept dramas on my hdd as with Nice Guy. Another episode to wrap this up would have been great.
