@CamelKnight I see we liked quite a few of the same parts of this episode! I agree with your comment about this being the least entertaining episode though that's a matter of opinion of course. It's the only episode I can think of that I skimmed through when I was re-watching the series from beginning to end. The protesting bit is interesting but not riveting by any means.

I agree, too. But I’m not Korean. I’m sure if I was Korean and I survived that tumultuous era, this episode would have been an excellent jumping off point for a political discussion at home, at dinner time, after the show.  I think any political movement that calls for radical social change and/or national liberation will have plenty of underground activism. And university students have always been in the forefront of major political movements.  For me – and my sons, lol – it would be interesting to find out what actions THEY would consider taking up in service of their desire for this change and liberation. For sure, many of the political leaders are willing to commit activities which might have criminal consequences and/or might violate constitutional laws in pursuit of the social goals. But are the followers or the rank-and-file i.e., students and the "common man", willing to pursue those methods too?  A movement for social justice will fail if only the top echelon is moving towards it. The bottom half has to move along, too.

The 80s decade was really heady times for a lot of nationalistic movements.

[my shockwave flash keeps on crashing. ugh.]

Oh I hope so too! They could make it a joint collaboration with Japan and bring in that market too [if they haven't tapped it already]. How good were relations between Korea and Japan then though? I know that there were issues a while back because of the comfort women.

Not good. So that alone would add all the necessary drama. Kinda like Romeo and Juliet, without the tragedy of course. And yes!! the issue of comfort women can be brought up. Good point!

What did strike me was when Bo Ra was shown on tv and No Eul mentioned this to DS. This scene is a prime example of how DS still has love for her sister, eventhough she always gets the short end of the stick. She keeps her dad occupied instead of pointing out that Bo Ra is on tv, thus trying to keep her safe. Any change in the channel would have been suspicious and you see her brain cells trying to find a way to save her sister from being discovered by their parents.
If DS had truly hated Bo Ra, this would've been a good place to rat her out, but she didn't.

I think both NE and DS knew early on that Bora was active in the student riots. Didn't DS mention something about it to their grandmother in Episode 2? NE knew too but after he got beaten up by BoRa for tattling about her cigarettes, I think he knew better than to blurt out something like that.

And yes, it was funny that DS was trying to distract the Dad but it was the mom who eventually saw Bora on TV.

1 hour ago, CamelKnight said:

I loved how SW's mom goes off towards her mother-in-law. Starting out quietly only to have emotion take the better off her and eventually blowing a nuke. Loved how she refused her money too. Ballsy!
And later on so funny when she's anxious when her mother's coming over to visit. Two different people visiting, two completely different reactions.

Don't you think too that she was preconditioned by her earlier conversation with JH’s mom? That JH’s mom’s vocal indignation made her gutsy?

I also like the way she was very open about her dislike for Bora. She liked Deoksun better than Bora because Bora was frightening. Lol.  Little did she know that Bora was destined to be her daughter-in-law.  Hmmm… come to think of it, the Bora-type isn’t exactly the DIL I want for my sons.  She's too abrasive and argumentative. Most likely cause us heartburn during family dinners. hahahaha.

I don't know what's up with this jacket thing but it seems like it's still a "done" thing. I watched We Got Married with the old couple Joy and SungJae (?), and Joy did the same exact burrow-and-pop-up head gesture with the guy's jacket. Like, what the?? Are the girls' heads really that small that they could easily hide it inside the guy's jacket? Or don't the men have bulging chest muscles?

Calling @tiendoank, the resident specialist on manly chests. lol.  Perhaps you can shed light on this. Is it really physically possible to burrow inside a man's trench coat? :D

Can I comment about this umbrella scene? Shoutout to @dahae2006, ;)

Unlike some bloggers who-must-not-be-named and those silly JH fangirls who built a whole mountain out of this molehill of an umbrella scene, I got tired of JH’s juvenile crush.

There he was: in this episode, he had been acting like a tough guy again, jealously asking what DS was doing with SW and DS, calling her “Special Unit” [a slur referring to her lack of mental prowess], gruffly telling her to stop walking around so late at night, and then leaving HER to walk home with the umbrella and heavy bag.

My gut reaction was: Are you kidding me? If he was so concerned about her safety then why on earth did he run home [we saw it in Episode 20] and leave her walking at past 2am all by herself in the deserted neighborhood? Couldn’t he have contained his giddiness and acted like a real caring man here and escorted her home??!!

Pffftttt.

Compare this to TK, in Episode 11. Quietly, without brandishing a Superman cape, he followed DS to the restroom and told her that he would wait for her.  And in order NOT to make her feel embarrassed about the Burberry incident nor to make her feel obligated to his assistance afterward, he *pretended* that he needed to smoke a cigarette. [How could he have suddenly felt the urge to smoke when he was in the middle of eating?]

For me, JH’s umbrella gesture was just trumpery. It was for show. To me, too, he really was only good at one thing: scolding her.

I actually thought that was the one semi-sweet gesture done by JH. [No pitchforks please! :sweatingbullets:] I forgot we saw in episode 20 that he ran home right after that though...

I will say that I absolutely didn't like JH's show of jealousy in this episode. He was right there in the room with SW/DS so he knew they weren't doing anything even remotely wrong. It wasn't like the time with DS/DR where he walked in on them looking cozy. Either way he had no claim to DS because they aren't dating so his blatant show of jealousy was quite irritating. I much preferred TK's more subtle approach.

actually I like how they hi light Bora who's protested against the government, in my country back in 1997 when college student protesting some of them were killed in the process. I like how reply 1988 inserted political issue but somehow connect it with family matter.

I sensed a parallel from episode 4 and 11.

No pitchfork here. [okaaay, maybe just a tiny oyster fork then. ;)]

I try to avoid bloggers and their recaps because they predispose me to view scenes through their eyes. When I watched this scene, I felt the urge to snap at DS and explain the obvious, "That kid has a crush on YOU!" when she just stared after JH with her confused look. Why? because the recap I read earlier  had preconditioned me to empathize with JH's worries. But I forgot to view the whole scene as it unfolded through DS' own eyes.

If I were in her 18 year old soul, I would so find him weird because he was definitely giving mixed signals. True, he gave me his umbrella. But I didn't ask for it so why was he acting all mad at me as if I pushed him to go out and wait in the rain for me? Hmmmm, was he concerned about me? But then why did he turn around and walk ahead without me? We're going home to the same place anyway. Ugh! Whatever! He must be messing around with me again.

Lol. Mental note for myself: don't read recaps and commentaries before actually watching the show for the next Reply series.

That jealousy scene with SW, @phikyl? I wouldn't regard it as jealousy had I been DS either. I would see it exactly as DS did. That he was seeing me as a nuisance to SW. And just like that moment in the previous episode when he was showing off his English skills, the thought that would enter my mind was he was showing off his superiority and acting like an infernal as.s again. Kekeke.

That depends on the width of the coat and the chest in question. If the coat is one size too small, the lady might find difficulty trying to burrow her face in it (unless she wants to yank it off..lol).

See this??

I can still see YOU, MyLady :glasses:

The same applies to the chest. But if the chest comes up with this pair of biceps to encircle her .. well..

I opened the spoiler tag expecting this:

Now that was a good use of trenchcoat/biceps so the fangirls wouldn't see their faces! If only she'd leaned in instead of looking down...

I wasn't going to comment on the picture under @tiendoank's spoiler tag BUT I must tell you that some ladies here have questioned on a previous PM whether his bike pants were a bit revealing. :)

Beware of the Greeks bearing gifts...or in this case, naughty tiendoank putting pix in spoilers. Kekeke. It's a trrrrraaaap!

I still have to look a gif of that WGM couple Joy and SungJae doing this trench coat snuggle. I truly wonder if Korean entertainment people are given a handbook of Couple Traditions or is it just ingrained in their collective memories? Like, how do they remember all these cheesy and cutesy poses? Lol. It must be tiring for girls who don't practice aegyo.

I never understood the appeal of aegyo but I can't even put it down to a cultural difference because there's plenty of western girls who do the same type of thing.

I guess when you grow up seeing all these cutesy acts in dramas and television, it's easy to remember them. I don't think we see nearly as much of the same over here. Maybe the actors/idols really do practice it though. Aegyo 101 as part of idol training.  There always seems to be that one member of an idol group who is known for their aegyo...

hahaha. If I was a teenager right now and my boyfriend approached me with an unbuttoned trench coat, the last thought I'd have would be to burrow my face in that "manly chest" of his. Seriously.

Hahaha. You SIR are not safe to be let loose among the JH fangirls in the Reply 1988 thread. Even I won’t be able to protect you there.... ;)

Re. the father here in this episode, I kinda like him. He was what other people might call a “bleeding heart.” Cough. Cough. Cough.  [You really should understand him because he's a bit like you, you know.]

I don't fear fangirls. I fear my wife, to some extend :P

He really is not like me. I'm much more selfish. I want my family/loved ones to be safe and I will do everything I can to make sure they have everything they desire. I'll admit graciously I'm not the type to donate cash to anyone collecting. I feel I can spend my money in better ways, or at least in ways I can see a more direct benefit of.

@CamelKnight The protection from the police is what I meant but I'm not sure if I believe that BR's parents didn't know about her protesting before she came home with tear gas on her. There had to be other signs that they were overlooking because they preferred to believe that she was out studying instead.

I also got the idea that BR/DS's father came home smelling like tear gas too just because of where the protest was located being on his way home. The same thing could have happened to Bora, in theory, but her parents automatically jumped to the assumption it was from her protesting. So, in my opinion, they knew beforehand and just didn't want to believe it.

Ah, thought you were talking about the cash. I believe their parents are oblivious to anything Bo Ra does to be able to maintain their mentail picture of a perfect daughter. DS fails at school, so does NE. They only have Bo Ra to maintain their pride. A protesting daughter would wipe that image, and the image they imprint on others of their daughter, in an instant. It's the same reason why dad doesn't react like a complete richard simmons like he did before when he's smoking outside of the policestation with the other dads. Telling them he's okay with her protesting, to him, means maintaining that perfect image "She's not a bad girl, I agree with her. See? Good girl!".

Yeah, that tear gas incident does play into your cards and not so much into mine, so I'm simply ignoring that like a true fanboy :D

I remember this episode being about mothers,  just like The Return of Superman episode being about fathers. And I thought excluding    Taek  who doesn't have mother in this episode was nice touch, I still don't know how to feel about   Sun Woo's imaginary talk with his father in that episode

You're forgiven :D

Hmm, you could be right. This one could be about the moms. If I'm not mistaken (unless I seriously missed something) this isn't the episode where SW talks to his dead dad though.

Did she? I can't remember anything of the sort, but I've only watched that episode twice. NE picks up on a lot more things than he's getting credit for. He's a smarter version of JH's hyung. Though only slightly it seems.

Mom shouldn't have been the problem as she was always protecting Bo Ra. It was much more important to keep dad occupied considering how he already went ballistic when she only smelled like tear gas. Unfortunately, mom was so shocked by seeing Bo Ra on tv, and not in a good way, she couldn't help but react.

Sure, I'll give you credit for that explanation :D

I'd rather have a daughter in law like that. Don't want some docile sheep who can only nod and say "Yes sir, No sir". And for the time being, Bo Ra is only acting out this way because she's got no experience. Later on she settles down. The question is: would you wait for it or tell your sons to get another girlfriend?

He was also good for some other fangirls. But to me, he seemed a lot like a filler. Let's create a lovers triangle. Koreans love that stuff.

I agree with you though. He's constantly acting like a big child with his crush. He really has no idea what to do. On one hand he stays up late and worries, on the other hand he's constantly scolding DS for no reason. Him leaving her with the umbrella at 2 a.m. is another extremely childish and stupid action. If he wanted to impress her he would've waited outside the study hall (she had already walked for a bit before they met up) and had offered her to walk her home under his umbrella. It would've been an oppertune moment to confess his feelings for her. For what other reason would he be out there at 2 a.m.? Seriously, if this isn't the time she picks up on his feelings, she never will even if he'd shout it straight to her face. Best to come clean if you're going to act like this. Silly boy.
