Actor Hong Jong Hyun opened up about his 'Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo' co-star IU in an interview TV Report on November 9.

When I saw the promo, my 1st impression was of coz on LJG & IU.  I proceed watching & hooked @ 1st episode. Therefore, I thank the cast too esp. the main actors.  As for other issues, I rest my case.  I just hope that there will be DVD with uncut / director's cut version + alternative ending.

Where do I start? It's been over a week now since the last episode aired... after which, my mind went into total shutdown, with the accumulation of mental and physical exhaustion finally taking over... allowed to take over. Real life demanded and got my attention, and when I finally had some down time, I revisited it once more with C-subs with a frame of mind that was, if not clearer, then at least calmer than before. Appreciating anew what we were given, regretting what could have been better, but all the while, knowing that it will continue to hold a special place in my heart.

 

So's character evolution is an interesting one to chart. From the scarred, feared man in the beginning, shunned and apparently sidelined, who opened up his heart to emotions and love, enjoying for a brief moment, love, brotherhood and acceptance from Soo and Baek Ah, only to lose it again at the seat of the throne. Even in his early days, he displayed an obsessive streak alongside his immense capacity to love, and the lengths to which he would go, lines he would cross for them, whether they want it or not. There is naivety alongside arrogance in his belief that those he love would come around to his way of thinking, and relent with the knowledge that they were paramount when he weighed his options. It was clear from the mass slaughter at Daegyuhwan Hell, believing that Queen Yoo would finally see his love and reciprocate. It was the same when he executed Chae Ryung, believing that Soo would understand and accept him, just as she did when she knew about Daegyuhwan Hell. And again, when he admitted that his decision would not have changed if he had known Woo Hee would use her life to protect both Baek Ah and her people. What is all the more tragic is that in the end, for all his desperate efforts, he could not retain them by his side, having failed to consider their standpoint, even if they went against his. Ironically the hard-earned throne he initially claimed to protect those he cherished, became his final mistress, and despite her cold, terribly lonely embrace, he could no more give her up but continually sought to solidify his power, when everyone else he loved had turned away.

 

Soo's character arc is given far less justice and became a mass of contradictions in the closing episodes, which I blame solely on the uneven pacing and editing. From the moment she realised So would be Gwangjong, way before she fell in love with him, she determined that she would help him avoid from becoming a bloody monarch - to protect the people she had come to love and care for. It began with her covering up his scar, enabling him to find acceptance and love among his family and people, in the hopes that he would set aside his grudges and hatred. Then came her oft-repeated admonitions not to get angry - all stemmed from her need to prevent the fate history intended for him. When she finally loved him, she felt even more keenly the mission she had taken upon herself. This time, she hoped that their love would be the key, so she kept him beholden to the promise not to harm his brothers, just as she promised to never leave him. Chae Ryung's death was the first wake-up call to her extreme naivety as far as he was concerned, and his subsequent malevolence to those who crossed him drove home that she was a fool to think their love could change him at the core. So was unfailingly kind and tender towards her, but not even she could hope to influence his decisions when they stand in direct conflict with his stance. She saw it with Jung being unable to be with his mother in her dying moments, and again when he relented Wook's execution only because a lifetime of incarceration would inflict far more suffering. Compound to that the realisation why Wook set himself against So, and all the blame heaped at her door including Eun and Soon Deok's inability to escape, knowing that she inadvertently set in motion what she hoped to avert. In that moment, something in her died, and she finally knew that she could change nothing, certainly not him. If anything, she believes that her very presence would be the trigger for what she hoped he would never become. As such, when Jung came with the marriage edict, it was this mindset, and the new life in her, that propelled her once more to say yes. She held herself responsible for all the misfortune that happened, and by taking herself out of the equation, she hoped the man she loved would no longer travel the road history had dictated.

 

The events leading to this is where the narrative truly messes up. It was inconceivable for her to have sent the message to Jung when Chae Ryung died. Up to that moment, So had not done anything to deserve her censure, so to have her determine there and then that she would leave him was totally out of character, considering how she stuck with Wook even after he let her down again and again. I would have understood if she had made the decision after an accumulation of events - Queen Yoo's death, Jung, Wook... but no. Perhaps at the time, she desperately needed surety of escape, should she choose to go, but even that is a weak explanation. In the end, I feel that the scriptwriter and director ran out of time, and this is the result - chain of events that are poorly justified. Likewise the rampant running around of people who are meant to be incarcerated with a punishment that is second only to death. Why? It should have been better managed, but it wasn't and it showed.

 

Gripes nonetheless, the final episode, while not free from editing issues, well and truly redeemed itself. So, knowing that he had a daughter, yet relenting and respecting Soo's wishes hit the right notes and eased the pain a little. While he would never claim her, it does indicate that she will be in his life, even if from a distance, and he had a living part of Soo near him to the day he died. Soo's devastated realisation in present day, brought home that ultimately everything she tried to do was futile. Would it have changed anything if she had not left him? I do not believe so. In the end, the stars will still align and fate will go down the path it intended, no matter how she tried otherwise.

 

Where the drama really shines for me is when it takes inspiration from the source material and gives it a fresh interpretation. Each time this is done and done well, it takes my breath away. Several key scenes in particular, have become forever etched in my heart. The rain scene will forever be intrinsically tied to Court Lady Oh's selfless sacrifice. Eun and Soon Deok, innocents sacrificed at the altar of this bloody game of thrones whose fates still have me hurting each time I think of them; is reminiscent of 13th Prince's enforced incarceration to which 4th had to forcibly look aside. The beauty and poignancy of the lantern date - an all-too-brief time when he was still truly and wholly hers, before she frees him to his destiny as king, one she ultimately could not follow. Soo's pregnancy and the precious, living legacy of their love in the person of their little girl, a far kinder fate in some ways for So than 4th's, who had only inanimate relics that Ruoxi left behind, without even a final word. Soo, hearing the song that somehow found its way to the people, reminding her in her dying moments, that he did, and perhaps still does love her. Paintings upon paintings depicting events that mean something to her... his voice calling out to her from across time. It was devastating, it was poignant, it was so beautifully, masterfully done that I would not have had it any other way. 

 

This was a drama that would have been well served with at least 24 episodes. I beg to differ with those who said that ultimately it is the same length as the original because it is not. BBJX covered 35 episodes with ~50 mins each, which is equivalent to almost 30 one-hour episodes. So to start off with, MLSHR already had the challenging task of covering so much narrative, including the rise and fall of several kings, in addition to fleshing out the extensive characters that were the fabric of the story, in a much shorter space of time. In that regard, pacing became a problem, and I already feared for it, particularly at the 13th episode mark, when we have yet to address significant historical events. The time given to the two main romances were also disproportionate, but that perhaps did not bother me as much, since we were already seeing the beautiful evolution of So and Soo's relationship from the very beginning, running in parallel to hers with Wook's. And what they did manage to cover in the last 7 episodes, was far more heart-searing than any idyllic romance she enjoyed with Wook, leaving no doubt who she was destined to be with. Unfortunately though, the haphazard pacing in the later part of the story meant narratives and characterisations suffered, with stretches of credulity and attempts to fill in the blanks or make sense of the narrative flow.  Yet in spite of it all, it was a drama that managed to weave its magic around me and keep me invested, in no small part due to the strong ensemble performances, particularly from LJG and LJE, and completely captivated me all the way to the end and beyond, even now.

Hello all,  even though I try to let go of this after-effect drama feeling, but I still somehow wishing for an update about the extra scene. I keep checking everyday  .......this is killing me slowly :')  

Meanwhile I wonder if you guys already discuss about GJ's painting. In my opinion this painting is actually nice if only the nose is more sharp so it resemble LJG better. 

So I realized the face shows different expression side by side. I wonder if it's how they intended it to be (another theory of something), or is it just the imperfection asymmetrical from the painter's mistake during painting   Because if you notice the expressions are really different from each other, it's like two different people in one face (sounds creepy lol).

In the left expression we see a determined face, full of confidence, a leader, a rising king. Look at the eye, it shows the power of King GJ himself who will not hesitate on his decisions, can't let anyone manipulate him,  The eye clearly shows confident and strong willed man, but somehow for me it looks empty at the same time.

Meanwhile In the right it shows a really different expression. ( I was surprised myself) The face looks sad, the eye shows deep sorrow. It represent a man who somehow broken inside. I think this is the true WS who begin to fade behind GJ's presence. The two of them is always there, living as one, but this WS personality of him is getting weaker by time and GJ is the dominant one now. 

If this is what the PD nim or the writer really want to show us, then I would like to applaud them for the detail. This painting clearly shows how WS and GJ are truly different but still the same person in the end.

The left eye indeed looks sharper, with more of a piercing stare.. while the right eye looks, like you mention, more emotional and sorrowful. I think maybe because that's where WS has his scar and he also predominantly covers his right side of his face with his mask previously. So there may be some truth that the right side of the painting will reveal more of his WS's original character. Since for most people, the true self is sometimes the side people want to hide the most. As WS ascended the throne, he had done away with the mask and his scar(covered by make-up). So maybe that's when this true WS personality began to fade and engulfed by the dominant GJ self(as you have described).

Like you have said, it could really be a way for the PD-nim or writer-nim to reveal this hint through the painting.

Kudos for recognizing the difference between left and right side of the painting and providing such clear analysis. I think the PD's and writer's true intention lies on your explanation. It's not only the eyes, the lips corner is also different. On the left side, the corner is slightly curled up, showing confidence and determination, while on the right side it's not. The lips corner matches perfectly with the eyes and I believe it's not coincidental. I recognized some other details too on some eps, but I forget what they are. I will write more when I remember^^
