[V Report Plus] ‘New Journey to the West’ to go live on Tuesday

The press conference for star-studded variety show “New Journey to the West” will go live on Tuesday at 2 p.m. via V app.

For the upcoming tvN show, star producer Na Young-seok reunites with four original members of “2 Days and 1 Night” -- Kang Ho-dong, Lee Seung-gi, Eun Ji-won and Lee Soo-geun -- for the first time in four years.

The four members will each take one of the characters from the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West” and travel around Xian, the ancient capital of China, to play various games.

Comedian Kang, in his first cable channel project, plays the pig character Zhu Baijie, while singer-actor Lee takes the role of a Buddhist monk, Xuanzang.

Rapper-entertainer Eun will play Sha Wujing, a celestial being, while comedian Lee plays the famous monkey character, Sun Wukong.

“New Journey to the West” will premiere on Friday at 10 a.m. via online streaming platform Naver’s TV Cast.

Naver’s real-time broadcasting app V allows fans to interact with their favorite K-pop stars through live broadcasts. The app is available for Android and iOS. For more information, visit http://www.vlive.tv./

CJ E&M Reality Show to Stream on Tencent in China

SEOUL: A new travel-themed online reality show from CJ E&M, New Journey to the West, is set to stream exclusively on Tencent's QQ.com in China, simultaneously with its run Korea.

Directed by Na Young Suk, who’s best known for having produced hit reality TV series such as Grandpas over Flowers and Three Meals a Day, the variety show New Journey to the West stars popular celebrities as Kang Ho Dong, Lee Seung Gi, Eun Ji Won and Lee Soo Guen. Based on the Chinese ancient classic novel Journey to the West, the quartet will travel to Xi’an in China, while role-playing the novel’s four main characters—the Monkey King, the Pig Guy, the Monk Sha and the Master—to complete various missions along the way.

The show launches September 4.

Seo Jang-Ho, the head of international sales and acquisitions at CJ E&M, said, "We are excited to introduce New Journey to the West to Chinese viewers through Tencent, one of the largest online platforms in the country. "New Journey to the West," a much anticipated entertainment program by tvN, will be broadcast on Chinese web portal qq.com, the South Korean cable network said Monday.

It will be streamed there and on South Korean portal website Naver simultaneously, tvN said.

In South Korea, the first episode is scheduled to air at 10 a.m. Friday, local time.

The two trailers posted on Naver last week have garnered a combined 2.4 million views so far.

The program reunites comedians Kang Ho-dong, Lee Soo-geun, actor Lee Seung-gi and rapper Eun Ji-won, a dream team from the first season of "Two Days, One Night" on KBS 2TV five years ago.

"New Journey to the West" was inspired by "Journey to the West," a 16th-century Chinese novel. The four cast members will each play the role of one of the novel's four main characters, the network said.

Its first few episodes were shot in the central Chinese city of Xi'an, although producers have not mentioned the next filming location. (Yonhap)

The four main stars of the upcoming TV travelogue “New Journey to the West” took to the live streaming app V on Tuesday and introduced the “Zhubajie” dance minutes before a news conference.

“Zhubajie” is the name of an anthropomorphized hog-monster in the Ming Dynasty novel “Journey to the West,” on which this show is based. The first few episodes were shot in the central Chinese city of Xi’an.

Entertainer Kang Ho-dong, prepared two sets of humorous movements -- for an introductory dance routine befitting the comedic character -- and bid the viewers to help pick the better one.

“We have to do the funnier one,” he said.

He then wildly flung his arms and legs chanting the name Zhubajie, amid the roaring laughter of his friends and future travel mates -- actor Lee Seung-gi, rapper Eun Ji-won and comedian Lee Soo-geun.

Fans picked the first dance, where Kang placed his hands over the ears and flapped his bent arms while hopping on spot.

Star producer reunites old crew for new show

The star producer behind hits like “Grandpas Over Flowers” and “Three Meals a Day” is bringing together old friends for a new travel-themed variety show.

That familiar chemistry was what producer Na Young-suk and cast members Kang Ho-dong, Lee Seung-gi, Eun Ji-won and Lee Soo-geun -- who previously appeared together on another travel variety show called “1 Night, 2 Days” -- emphasized at a press conference at the 63 Convention Center ahead of the premiere of “New Journey to the West.”

“It was the first time in five years that I got to take a trip with (this cast),” said Lee Seung-gi. “I was worried at first that we wouldn’t have the old chemistry, but that was a useless concern. It felt comfortable the moment we took off.”

Na said the show originally began with the idea of the old friends taking a road trip together. “(Lee) Seung-gi and I had been talking about going on a trip together with the old crew, and I thought that it would be too much fun to keep to ourselves,” he said.

Inspired by an ancient Chinese classic novel called “Journey to the West,” Na’s new tvN show “New Journey to the West” promises comedy, adventure, and drama as the cast travel through Xi‘an, China, over five days.

“I traveled all over the world while shooting the ‘Over Flowers’ series, and I always thought that I wanted to create something specifically tailored to China,” Na explained when asked about his choice of location. “Every district has its own color, and the country’s history is closely tied to Korea’s. I thought it would be a waste to just do a one-off project there.”

The four members have been assigned to various characters from the original novel as they play Na’s signature games on the trip. Kang Ho-dong plays Pig Guy (Zhu Bajie), Lee Soo-geun plays the Monkey King (Sun Wukong), Eun Ji-won plays Monk Sha (Sha Wujing) while Lee Seung-gi plays the Master (Xuanzang).

“New Journey to the West” is the first project from tvN’s digital content brand “tvN go” for the latter half of 2015, and will stream online instead of airing on TV. According to the cast, that the Internet format allowed them to be more open in the things they said, not least of which was the freedom to talk about specific brand names, which is restricted on traditional airwaves.

“When you’re on a regular set, just seeing all the brand names on products covered and hidden makes you feel like you’re at work,” said Eun. “But on this trip, everything was open, and it just felt like we were there to have fun.”

In addition to more freedom in the cast’s words and actions, the Internet format gave producer Na a chance to try out a new method of distribution.

“Every time we release clips from the show, we will be releasing roughly five clips up to 10 minutes each,” he said. According to Na, each clip will be a wholly contained segment, allowing viewers to enjoy the show according to their leisure. “Someone who has a lot of time can watch all five clips at once. For others, they can look at the titles of the clips and choose what they’d like to see.”

Despite these differences, Na said, the production team’s core concern was on content, and not on underlining the changes that come with doing an online broadcast.

“We didn’t want to get boxed in by the thought that we were doing something of a new genre,” he said.

“Format and platform are important in content, but in the end it’s about whether it’s worth watching. That’s all we thought about while creating the show.”

“New Journey to the West” premieres on the online streaming platform Naver TV Cast on Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. with five clips. The show also has an exclusive contract with Tencent to air the show on its video site QQ.

I didn't finish the latter part of the PressCon since it was late where I was but do you guys know if the full webcast is posted anywhere? I went back to the V app but only the backstage footage was available. On another note, I'm really happy for Lee Sugeun. During the trip departure photos he looked really apprehensive which he admitted during the PressCon. Yesterday's event showed him more relaxed and almost settled and it was all because he was in the company of friends. This was so evident in the 2nd trailer clip which was their first meeting as a group in 5 years. I was so touched with NaPD watching Kang Hodong, Lee Sugeun and Lee Seunggi hug it out when the latter 2 arrived. What emotions must they have felt in then?! So great to see them share a table again even if they had to squeeze in to Lee Woojung's Reply 88 conference room. I'm disappointed though that I didn't see Daeju-yaaaa!
