javabeans: Na PD’s new online variety show New Journey to the West premiered on Friday, and my main question is: Was anybody able to watch it?

girlfriday: I had to do some digging to get my hands on it, which was annoying. For an internet broadcast, this show is strangely difficult to watch on the internet.

javabeans: The show confuses me on a number of points, although the show concept itself is not in the least confusing (old variety show partners take a trip to China with famously stingy producer). Just, why is it only available on NaverCast? Why is the first “episode” really five “episodes” and how do we watch it and why are they treating it like it’s such a brand-new show when it’s really the same old show with a new name?

 

girlfriday: Who even knows. I’m pretty sure that even the cast has those same questions. The first five episodes were released all at once, and each “episode” ranges from three to thirteen minutes or so, so I thought maybe it would be a really non-linear show that amounted to a series of funny clips. But no, they’re just five snippets arranged chronologically, so you can just watch them all in order as if it were one episode.

Part 1

javabeans: The first part starts off in Seoul, with Lee Seung-gi arriving with his luggage. Isn’t it strange to see him introduced as a 29-year-old, when you can remember the first time he was on a Na PD show as the baby?

girlfriday: Omg, he was such a baby. Also, now he’s starting out as the biggest star in the cast, which is weird too.

javabeans: He gets into the bus first, and Na PD starts out with an “apology” — for putting him on a show with people with tarnished images. Wow, you’re just gonna address all their divorce/tax/gambling scandals huh? And then Seung-gi jokes that the cast will arrive in order of “least sins” to most.

Btw, I have a question about watching it on the V app. I have seen eps 1-5 with EngSub on DM and the other links but I want to be able to watch it on the app in the future. I have searched New Journey to the West on the app and nothing shows up except for the PressCon clip (1:49:15 long) and the NJttW PressCon Lee Seunggi bit. Are you guys searching for it some other way that I don't know about? I have watched other streams on the app like BigBang and 2PM and there have been no problems with their streams showing up on my New, Popular or Upcoming feeds. For some reason only NJttW is the problem. Can somebody help me? Thank you!

I'm in the US if that matters but at any rate I guess I'll have to wait for other sources. Kinda annoying since I've just about accidentally clicked all the meokbang streams that I didn't want to watch in the first place while searching for NJttW and it just made me hungry for food and hungry for the official eng subbed eps. Glad a lot of people are subbing it though.

@calypso73 Oh, didn't know that it can give different result, usually only the backstage doesn't show at mine. How about "신서유기"? It shows everything except ep 6-10 for me. "West" shows everything for me too. Maybe it'll work for you?

@sgsairl That was actually my first search entry last week when I tried to watch it. Typed 신서유기 but it only showed the same two that were above and the Live Backstage with Lee Seunggi stream. Tried it on my tablet and the same results. Thanks for your help. I think my V app is possessed.

Lee Seung-gi flaunts Chinese skills in 'New Journey to the West'

SEOUL, Sept. 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Lee Seung-gi has whipped out his Chinese skills in the second batch of "New Journey to the West," a tvN online series, released on Friday.

The sixth to 10th episodes of the online variety show were uploaded at 10 a.m. local time on the South Korean portal Naver and its Chinese equivalent QQ.com.

In the sixth episode, actor Lee, rapper Eun Ji-won, comedians Kang Ho-dong and Lee Soo-geun -- a dream team from the highly successful first season of KBS 2TV's "Two Days, One Night," a variety show, in 2010 -- complete their first mission in the central Chinese city of Xi'an where the show was filmed last month.

The mission was to find their way to a guest house from the Xi'an Xianyang International Airport with just 50 yuan (US$7.84) and 10 percent battery life left on their phones.

Actor Lee plays the Master from the 16th century Chinese classic "Journey to the West," which the show is modeled after. Rapper Eun is Monk Sha; Kang is Pig Guy; and Lee Soo-geun is the Monkey King.

The last to arrive at the guest house must wear thermal underwear in 40-degree-Celsius weather and buy lunch for the team. The seventh episode documents the trial of the unlucky participant.

The eighth episode hits a rather low point, with Kang Ho-dong trying to come up with a signature greeting gesture as the Pig Guy. The other three try to help, but all they manage is a slap-stick attempt at entertaining Xi'an pedestrians.

The second mission is given in the ninth episode in which the four have to guess which dish of the 100 available at a restaurant is the hot stew made with beef brisket, Asian mushrooms and noodles. They are provided with an all-Chinese menu and must finish whatever dish they ordered that isn't the stew before ordering another. The prize is the first of the seven dragon balls they need to collect on the journey. This is where actor Lee shines as the participant with the most knowledge of Chinese characters.

The tenth episode records the first night they spend in the city.

"New Journey to the West" is the first variety show produced by a TV network to be released exclusively online in South Korea.

The first five episodes have accumulated more than 10 million views.

With the second batch out, the show is expected to breeze past its goal of 20 million views.

The penultimate installment, also of five episodes, will come out next Friday.

The 10th Episodes, just by the tittle alreay give me all warm and fuzzy feeling " Sleeping together after 5 years"  :">

Even thought I don't understand how they keep count it as 5 years, because if we count it from HoDong leave in late 2011, than it's mean 4 years right ? lol

Well, the point is the sleeping together after years.. it feels soooo nostalgic :">
