[in-depth] Yeo Jin-goo, a nice high schooler

With his good looks and attractive mid-tone voice, Yeo Jin-goo is a high school student of good quality. He's even started to be funny and he's back with a movie. Women are celebrating his comeback.
Yeo Jin-goo's last movie was the 2013 "Hwayi : A Monster Boy". However, it hasn't been that long. He appeared in the tvN sitcom "Potato Star" and the short-lived movie "Mr. Perfect". He also attempted to dub the documentary film "Uigwe, the 8-Day Festival 3D" and made a cameo appearance in the movie "Tazza: The High Rollers 2".
Being a busy high school student, Yeo Jin-goo started to work on "Shoot Me in the Heart" which is an original based on writer Jeong Yoo-jeong's novel about two twenty-five year-olds who meet at a psychiatric ward challenge life with their youth.
This novel sold 220 thousand copies and was awarded the 5th Worldwide Cultural Award. No actor could hastily agree to star in such a movie because they'd have to be really good but Yeo Jin-goo was brave. He knew it was going to be tough but he didn't want to miss his chance. He wanted many youths to get hope and courage through this and he himself learned a lot from it.
"Many young people including myself are going through a hard time. We have to worry about going to college and the older ones have to worry about being employed. They are all in a position like Soo-myeong's. They are afraid to step into society. But I hope watching "Shoot Me in the Heart" will bring them courage and hope if not a great big change. Seung-min (Lee Min-ki) doesn't have friends but he has Soo-myeong (Yeo Jin-goo) by his side. The movie healed me a lot. I'm grateful for it and I'm sure many young people will relate".
This is the value of Yeo Jin-goo who is incomparable to an adult. Every single one of his words meant something and it looks like he's perfect for "Shoot Me in the Heart". Who else would've been able to handle such a job? The movie and the actor are a perfect harmony.
Yeo Jin-goo claimed he watched his movie in the theaters and smiled smugly. His maturity mostly had him cast in adult rated movies and he hasn't been able to watch one of them because of his age. Watching this movie with the staff and directors was one of the most nerve-breaking moments of his life. He only seemed like his age when he said that with every scene he felt like he could've done better.
"I had difficulty understanding the character from the original novel. I read the novel after reading the script and I was obsessed with Soo-myeong. I can see myself more into Soo-myeong from the novel and that reflected in the movie. I think I can do better next time".
He claims this role was more difficult to express than "Hwayi : A Monster Boy" which required much emotional expressions and action. He couldn't find anyone like Soo-myeong who is completely different from him and no one could help him either. It concerned him a lot.
"He's the opposite of me. Hwayi : A Monster Boy had a lot to analyze but Soo-myeong was unreadable. I couldn't find anything on the Internet and no one could explain to me what kind of character he is. It was tough. I think that's why I relied more on the novel. It says more than the movie. I had to work on controlling the intensity of Soo-myeong's mental status. I am closer to Seung-min rather than Soo-myeong".
Yeo Jin-goo claims he was obsessed with the novel. He started to go on a diet for his character and managed himself strictly.
"I was drawn to Soo-myeong's character at first and I didn't think about what was being seen but I couldn't ignore it. No one could be as healthy looking as me when they're suffering from mental issues. I ate chicken breasts with salads and worked out a little. However, my natural build didn't allow me to lose weight easily. I told myself I should have lost more weight and put on more sun-cream to make myself look pale".
He swallowed at the thought of the chicken he was offered by the depressed janitor (Park Choong-seon). He claims he didn't wipe off the grease on his hands after eating the chicken. He's had a few 'risky' moments.
Yeo Jin-goo also grew out his hair for the movie. It grew till his shoulders. Director Mun Je-yong claims Yeo Jin-goo looked almost innocent.
"Innocence might be inside me if you look carefully but I think I looked more feminine than I wanted to be. I didn't think wearing a wig would look natural so I decided to grow my hair. It was a new experience".
He talked about the bro-mance with Lee Min-ki who is actually twelve years older than him. He picked a classic scene and claimed it wasn't his thing. The profound romance that happened between two manly actors was too cheesy.
"Some of the best lines we had are 'are you alright without me?' or 'I'm here'. We were stuck in a narrow corridor saying these lines and it was too much. Other lines meant something in the movie but the first line was really too much. We both were at lost of words while monitoring ourselves later. It seemed like the scene would become dangerous with Clazziquai's "She Is". If I was a girl it wouldn't have been that bad but at least it was successful".
He also spoke about the touching moments; the sequence where the two of them tried to make a run. He even acquired a license in water leisure.
"It was really fun. I felt good driving the boat. What's interesting is, the boat moves exactly the way you want it to. I started to enjoy the speed of the boat and the director was scared. He tried to get me to take off my shirt but I didn't think that would bring out the emotions so I said no. Of course, that's not the only reason; however, that was the biggest reason, cross my heart and hope to die".

Actor Yeo Jin Goo, who will be turning 18 years old this year, admitted on the latest episode of “Happy Together” that he has never dated before in his life.

When one of the MC’s asked him whether he had a girlfriend, he answered, “I go to an all-boys high school, so I can’t date.” Then he was asked whether he has been “solo since birth.” At that question, he answered without hesitation, “yes.”

He further explained himself, “It’s not like I’ve never liked someone. It’s just that the kind of environment that makes it hard for me to date.”

He also revealed on the show that his ideal type is a “woman with a lot of aegyo,” adding, “a short woman who smiles a lot.”

'Shoot Me' takes aim at viewers' emotions

If a certain theme swept the entertainment scene last year, it was "healing", both on the small and big screen. Films and dramas attempted to appeal to viewers by leaving them with messages of hope and the courage to improve their lives, overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. 
Cable channel drama "Incomplete Life" struck a chord with the country's ordinary office workers while "Ode to My Father", Yoon Je-kyoon's heartwarming historical film about Korea's fathers and grandfathers, became the first movie in 2015 to surpass 10 million admissions.
And now, first-time director Mun Je-yong is jumping on the bandwagon with his debut commercial film "Shoot Me in the Heart", which is based on award-winning novelist Jeong Yoo-jeong-I's 2009 book of the same title.
Instead of targeting a certain demographic, however, the movie aims to appeal to a wide audience who constantly compromise instead of standing up for what they believe in.
In the film, Seung-min (Lee Min-ki) and Soo-myung (Yeo Jin-goo) become roommates on admission to Soori Hope Hospital, a desolate psychiatric institution located on a mountainside. The derelict venue, which overflows with coercion and violence, is a living hell for the patients. If a hint of happiness and hope is spotted, it is stamped out by the evil nurses. 
Soo-myung, who has a phobia of scissors due to an unfortunate incident in the past, manages to live through the grim situation by obeying what the authorities say - unlike his rebellious roommate Seung-min. The good-natured boy keeps helping other patients out, even if it means being tortured afterwards. 
But when it comes to dealing with his own issues, Soo-myung is a coward and clams up. 
"What is the real you, I wonder?" Seung-min asks Soo-myung one day. "Not the one who escapes or endures, but the one that confronts your life". 
For Soo-myung, the question is a catalyst for change.
Likewise, the line seems as if it is a shot aimed at the hearts of viewers - which is what Mun hoped to achieve in this film. 
"I hope this movie will give energy to those who have been hurt and are hiding somewhere", said the director during a press conference on Tuesday at Lotte Cinema in Gwangjin District, southwestern Seoul.
"I know that feeling because I have failed a lot and it felt as if I was alive, but dead at the same time", he said, explaining the affinity he felt with the original book. "When I read it, I felt like I was reborn and thought I had to make a movie out of it".
In the process of adapting a novel into a movie, some details were changed. Explanations about characters were omitted and much additional research was needed to reproduce a fictional mental hospital onscreen. Finding insider information about closed wards was also challenging.
However, there was one thing the director kept in mind during the complicated process of adaptation.
"Jeong [the writer] made me promise one thing and that was not to change the core message of the film, which shouts: 'Be warriors, youths!'"
The movie starts on a dark, rainy day, showing a soaked and dirty ground, and finishes in a brighter mood having some of its characters fly high in the clear blue sky. This was part of the director's intention in delivering his message.
"We live in a grim, challenging reality, but inside of everyone's minds there should be a fine dream. I hope that nobody will let go of this dream", he said. 
A round of applause burst out from reporters after the director's comment. The film opens on Jan. 28.

Jackson challenges Yeo Jin Goo on who is the tougher man on 'Happy Together'
On the January 22 episode of 'Happy Together,' GOT7's Jackson and actor Yeo Jin Goo challenged each other to find out who was the tougher man as each contestant displayed their strong desire to win.

Prior to the game, Jackson chattered, "If I lose, won't I be considered as trash? Because I was an athlete before," while Yeo Jin Goo commented calmly, "I think Jackson will be really quick," revealing the contrast in their personalities.
The first game was a simple competition on who could get to the other side of the set the fastest. The former fencing champion beat Yeo Jin Goo 2 to 0, which fired up the actor's competitive nature. In the second and third games, both Yeo Jin Goo and Jackson were able to complete the challenges of hitting their heads and elbows on the ceiling, deeming them both as 'real men.'

Actor Yeo Jin-goo, 17 going on 25

Yeo Jin-goo is just 17, but he has all the makings of a fine actor ― a thirst for cinematic quality, an eye for detail and a genuine curiosity about a character's psyche.
This time, he will take on the role of a 25-year-old patient who has been frequenting a dingy psychiatric facility atop a mountain for the past six years.
Yeo's looks, deep voice and tact helped him enact a convincing 25-year-old in the film "Shoot Me in the Heart," but he needed something more to play the part of a persuasive schizophrenic.
In an interview with The Korea Times, Yeo said he is rarely satisfied with his acting, but depicting a character suffering from a traumatic disorder made this even more demanding.
"The message that the film is trying to get across is great, as is the way the film looks on the screen," he said. "But my acting at the beginning was shaky. Soo-myung has endured emotions that are not easily experienced."
Mun Je-yong's new film tells the story of Soo-myung whose peaceful life is thrown into disorder when he meets Seung-min, a walking time bomb. The film is based on award-winning novelist Jeong Yoo-jeong's 2009 book of the same title.
"I realized about half way through that I was relying too heavily on the original book for tips on understanding Soo-myung," Yeo said. "I was trapped inside the book, and that's why my acting was so stiff."
Particularly difficult was identifying with the character, he said. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder often characterized by abnormal social behavior and failure to acknowledge what is real. In "Shoot Me," Soo-myung attempts to escape reality, traumatized by his mother's suicide.
"Depicting the transformation Soo-myung undergoes as he overcomes schizophrenia was tricky," Yeo said. "In the end, I asked someone who used to treat such patients for advice.
"I also went to the original writer, and what she told me was that Soo-myung is actually a very smart kid," he continued. "This came as a shock to me. When she said this, all the questions that I had evaporated, and I found myself deep in thought about why this kid could be deemed smart."
Yeo knew this would be a challenging film for him, but this was what attracted him to it to begin with. His acting finally began to nail the character after several scenes with Seung-min, also 25, who is portrayed by 30-year-old Lee Min-ki.
"Lee's lines definitely helped me find a focus," Yeo said. "But I do feel that more research would have helped me maintain balance in earlier shoots."
Yeo describes "Shoot Me in the Heart" as a movie for this generation's youth who are in need of a pick-me-up.
"The drama Misaeng was dedicated to working men and women, while Ode to My Father was truly an ode to our fathers," Yeo said. "While Shoot Me may not be as realistic, I think films dedicated to our youth don't need to be so rational."
Yeo, who debuted as a child actor in the 2005 film "Sad Movie," said this film, rather than expanding his acting spectrum, gave him a chance to pull himself back together. And though he has now been an actor for 10 years, he feels he still has much to learn.
"I want to continue to challenge myself," he said. "I hope to one day appear in musicals and plays, and perhaps star alongside actors like Ha Jung-woo and Hwang Jung-min. It still hasn't sunken in that 10 years have gone by since I began acting. There's still so much I have to do."
In ten more years, Yeo hopes to grow into an actor with all sorts of metaphorical scars and dents.
"The kind who has undergone all sorts of experiences," he said.
In the meantime, while he feels a strong connection to Soo-myung, Yeo stressed that he does not want to spend his youth escaping from his past and locked up in his own self.
"No offense, but Soo-myung can be stifling," he said. "He's the kind of person who sinks because he doesn't face his issues head on, feeling relieved in a way that no other would find possible. I believe young people shouldn't be afraid to charge forward because, well, they're young."
"Shoot Me in the Heart" opens today in local theaters.

Yeo Jin Goo Reveals He Used to Hate His Low Voice
Actor Yeo Jin Goo revealed that his low voice used to be his insecurity.



Yeo Jin Goo, who plays the role of a model patient for six years in a mental asylum in “Shoot Me in the Heart,” discusses a variety of topics during an interview with MBC‘s “Let’s Go Video Travel.”
“I hated my voice when puberty hit. My voice was so bad that I didn’t talk much when I was in [9th grade]. I just didn’t want to talk when I realized my voice was weird.”
He adds, “A lot of senior actors now tell me that my low voice gives me a serious and sincere image. I think it is truly a blessing,” as he reveals his contentment with his voice.


“Shoot Me in the Heart” tells the story of the comical and dynamic friendship of model patient Soo Myeong (Yeo Jin Goo) and rascal Seung Min (Lee Min Ki) in a mental asylum. It opened in theaters on January 28.

Dohee appeared on SBS radio program, 'Cultwo Show,' on February 6 and mentioned child actor, Yeo Jin Goo, who has been winning hearts with his mature looks and deep voice.
She first talked about her kiss scene with Kim Sung Kyun from 'Reply 1994' when the DJs asked her, "You didn't completely like the kiss scene with Kim Sung Kyun, right?"  She replied, "It wasn't a 'wow' kind of feeling," and revealed she had thrown up afterwards because they had shot on a boat and she had felt seasick.

What show that they did together? Drama or variety? So far Dohee is the brave one to mention what scene she want to do with Jingoo compared to other actress. Go for it girl. Now I remember, it's Running Man the first episode on 2014.
