Next came Jeon Ji-hyun (31.2 percent), Bae Yong-joon (16.2 percent), Rain (14.4 percent) and Ji Jin-hee (12.9 percent).

the program will air starting Thursday at 9:55 p.m. on SBS. / Courtesy of SBS

A passionate tale of lovers follows in the heels of "The City Hall," the Cinderella story of public officials with a happily ever after, tonight on SBS.

The new drama "Swallow the Sun" is about young and headstrong protagonists risking their lives for success and love, and also to make Jeju Island one of the most popular cities in the world along their journey.

"Sun" made a buzz months before the actual airing due to its cast, which includes Ji Sung ("New Heart," 2007), and former member of the now disbanded girl group Fin.K.L., Sung Yu-ri, and also the makers of the program, producer Yoo Chul-yong and writer Choi Wan-kyu.

"We chose actors with potential and spirit. They are not only great in acting, but also considerate to everyone working on the set. We have traveled around to bring the best and viewers will get to see the spectacular scenery of Jeju, Las Vegas and even South Africa. We are ready to receive both compliments and critique," Yoo was quoted as saying by SBS.

Indeed, SBS and the drama crew have been stressing the series being filmed in various locations, including Africa, where no other Korean drama has been filmed until now.

The two drama makers proved their star power with the hit drama "All In" in 2003, starring heartthrob Lee Byung-hun ("The Good, The Bad, The Weird," 2008), and Song Hye-kyo ("Full House," 2004), and their collaboration is one reason many are waiting for the first airing.

"Sun" revolves around three main characters: Jung-woo, Su-hyun and Tae-hyuk. Jung-woo, played by Ji Sung, lives his life as a poor orphan until he saves the rich and powerful Jang Min-ho's life. His life takes a turn when he swears to serve Jang and his son Tae-hyuk as a servant, but when Tae-hyuk, played by Lee Wan, starts to demand more than Jung-woo can handle, he starts to wonder if he can continue. Things get complicated when Jung-woo is suddenly sent to prison instead of Tae-hyuk, and his journey for revenge and love begins from the cold ground of his cell.

"I remember the scene where I had to ride a truck and shoot with my gun the whole day. There was also an underwater shoot where I had to stay in the water for more than eight hours, and my eyes started to swell up," Ji Sung was quoted as saying to SBS. The 32-year-old actor trained hard to look the part of the strong and tough Jung-woo, and he said it was all for the best.

"The directors and staff tell me that the harder I train, the easier the viewers will understand my character, and I agree," he said. Another must-see feature is the renowned Canadian circus troupe "Cirque du Soleil," which will offer scenes from behind the set and during the show, the first time in the troupe's history. Actress Sung Yu-ri was the first actor to ever lay foot on the troupe's stage as part of a drama.

"Sun" is actually based a novel written by Kang Chul-hwa, a novelist and also the head of drama production company New Port Pictures. "The book was inspired by a love story I heard during my visit to Jeju Island. I traveled to the island about 120 times, and then Africa, and also casinos to finish the book," Kang said in a separate press statement. Kang added that the title also changed many times to match the story.

"The sun represents many things depending on the characters: For Jung-woo it's success and family, while for Su-hyun it's to become a famous show director. Finally for Tae-hyuk, it's his love toward Su-hyun. We added the verb 'swallow' to bring the determination of the characters trying to fulfill their dreams," said Kang.

Yoo also mentioned that the strong title was one of the reasons why he chose to recreate the book into a drama." It was a page-turner and I just had to remake it into a television series. I hope the viewers appreciate my decision throughout the airings," he said.

Meanwhile, the press conference for the drama had been scheduled Tuesday, but was canceled due to suspicions of H1N1 flu among the crewmembers. "The production team arrived in Incheon last Thursday from Las Vegas. There was a staff member who felt sick and tests confirmed that he had swine flu. Thus, we decided to cancel the press conference and further shoots for the time being as we cited the importance of the health of our staff," the promotion team of SBS said through a press release.

The drama will air on schedule, July 8 at 9:55 p.m. on SBS.

Tale of ambitious young adults

200907080026.jpg

With a slew of bankable summer blockbusters charging through the box office this season, it is about time a television series of epic proportions spiced things up on the small screen.

SBS' new Wednesday and Thursday night installment, "Swallow the Sun," promises to do just that.

The latest collaboration between "All In" duo director Yoo Chul-yong and scriptwriter Choi Wan-gyu, "Swallow the Sun" repeats blockbuster-making history, spinning a gargantuan tale of ambitious young adults with big plans and big dreams for Jeju Island.

The scenic island, Las Vegas and South Africa serve as the vast playground on which a star-studded cast that includes "New Heart" star Ji Sung, former girl group Fin.K.L hottie Sung Yu-ri and "Stairway to Heaven" actor Lee Wan play out this mega adventure.

A finely chiseled Ji Sung, who also starred in the hit series "All In" (SBS, 2003), sloughs off his "New Heart" charm for the rugged and rebellious skin of Kim Jung-woo.

Taking on the role of the illegitimate son of a gangster and a female diver, Ji Sung mastered scuba diving, boxing and taekwondo prior to extensive filming that took him from Korea to South Africa and Las Vegas. "I remember riding the truck all day off the beaten path, firing a gun, for the chase scene that unfolded in Africa," Ji Sung recounted unforgettable moments in a press release from SBS.

"For the underwater scene, which was the first one I filmed, I was in the water for eight hours," he recalled. "At one point my eyes got puffy. I swam with one hand and grabbed the gills of a sea bream with the other, struggling for life." "I think I will remember both scenes for a long time."

Behind the scenes, the tough and travel-heavy schedule took its toll on the drama's production crew. According to a press release from SBS, four crew members were diagnosed with the human swine flu virus after flying in from the United States in early July.

Prioritizing national health concerns over the drama, the press conference slated for Tuesday was cancelled and filming was temporarily halted. "All four are confirmed cases of the A (H1N1) virus," said an SBS representative over the phone.

When asked how they were faring, the representative stated that though they showed symptoms of high fever, they were not immobile and that one crew member was fully recovered. In regards to the health of the cast, the representative answered: "They are fine."

According to the press release, after wrapping up filming in Las Vegas the production crew returned to Korea on July 2. One crew member tested positive for swine flu and was placed in the Incheon National Quarantine Station. The following day the production crew joined the film crew in Jeju Island. After receiving tests at the Jeju Island public health center, three more crew members were diagnosed with the H1N1 virus on Monday.

According to the SBS representative, the crew member that was placed in the Incheon National Quarantine Station has made a complete recovery. "Filming may resume, at the soonest, on Thursday," stated the SBS representative.

The first episode was pushed back a day and was replaced by a special that aired yesterday. According to the press release, because plenty of scenes were filmed in South Africa and America, there are no setbacks to the broadcast of the drama for the time being.

Based on the original book authored by the production company's president Kang Chul-hwa of Newport Pictures, "Swallow the Sun" will air its first episode tonight on SBS at 9:55 p.m.

'G.I. Joe' Cast to Visit Seoul July 28

By Lee Hyo-won

Staff Reporter

The director and main cast of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," including British screen beauty Sienna Miller and hallyu star Lee Byung-hun, will visit Korea later this month to promote the Hollywood action flick, domestic distributor CJ Entertainment announced Monday.

Stephen Sommers, best known as the director of "The Mummy," Miller and lead actor Channing Tatum will arrive in Seoul July 28 ahead of the film's release here Aug. 6.

Lee, the heartthrob of hit TV soap "All In," will join the co-stars of his Hollywood debut piece in a press conference the following morning at Shilla Hotel.

ktimes.jpg

The action- and computer graphics-packed film is based on the G.I. Joe Real American Hero toy franchise, and brings together the producer of "Transformer" and the special effects team of "The Bourne Ultimatum." The globetrotting mission has scenes across Paris, the Egyptian desert and the Artic seas.

Set in the near future, it is about an elite American military force that must deal with the rise of the terrorist organization Cobra. According to USA Today, the director is quoted as saying that the film is for people who know nothing about the original franchise.

Lee stars as Storm Shadow, a Japanese assassin, among other evil Cobra members such as the Baroness, played by Miller. Tatum, who became popular as a break dancer in "Step Up," assumes the role of the good guy, the lead G.I. Joe soldier Duke.

Lee Byung-hun Returns With Film 'G.I. Joe'

By Lee Hyo-won

Staff Reporter

Hollywood and hallyu star power reigned in Seoul Wednesday with the arrival of the main cast and crew of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra."

A group of middle-aged Japanese women waited outside the hotel ballroom for the South Korean premiere of the action-packed film ― to catch a glimpse of "All In" star Lee Byung-hun, who makes his Tinsletown debut opposite Sienna Miller, Channing Tatum and Dennis Quaid.

Based on the G.I. Joe Real American Hero toy franchise, the film is about an elite American military squad that must stop the evil terrorist group Cobra from destroying the planet.

"Naneun baboda (I am dumb)," director Stephen Sommers proudly told reporters, and the venue broke into a rumble of laughter ― Lee had mischievously taught Sommers the wrong phrase to greet Koreans. Tatum, the heartthrob of "Step Up," said he "sniffed it out" and didn't fall for the trick.

ky1214200907291324470.jpg

"We had a fantastic reception at the airport yesterday… It's like traveling with Elvis," said Sommers, referring to Lee and the huge crowd of fans that welcomed the stars at Gimpo Airport, Tuesday. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said it was "great to have such a great Korean star" accompany his fourth trip to the country.

Tatum, 29, said his manager is Korean so he had seen Lee's performance in "Bitter Sweet Life." Miller, who was seen laughing and whispering with Lee throughout the event, said she had also admired the actor in the Kim Ji-woon film. "It was one of the most astounding performances and one of the most incredible films," said the 27-year-old screen beauty, adding that her co-star is not only "incredibly talented and handsome" but also "incredibly funny, silly and kind."

Director Sommers ("The Mummy") seemed to retaliate on Lee's prank earlier. "He's a mildly attractive guy, got an OK body but his eyes, it's all in the eyes,'' he said about watching the actor in a Korean film whose title he couldn't recall. "No, just kidding. He's a really great looking guy with a great body,'' he said, saying that "his eyes are always doing something.'' He said that the makers had a very short pre-production period and met one other person for Lee's role of Storm Shadow "but we asked (Lee) right away."

"Storm Shadow is an iconic character and we needed somebody with the grace and the style and the physical prowess and the assuredness to make that character work," said di Bonaventura, the producer behind such blockbusters as "Transformers."

Byunghun and Director Stephen Sommers

The 39-year-old returned the compliments by saying that his co-stars were "the most kind, down-to-earth people" and they became friends in no time, making his first project in the United States much easier. "He must have been intimidated but he didn't show it," said Miller.

In the film, Storm Shadow is portrayed as a Japan-trained Korean ninja who is part of terrorist group Cobra. A young Storm Shadow speaks Korean while training in Tokyo, and the director explained he meant the martial arts center to be international so Storm Shadow could well be Korean.

Miller trained six weeks for her tough evil femme fetale, the Baroness, who also happens to be an old flame of the film's hero, Duke (Tatum). Tatum, who grew up as a fan of the G.I. Joe franchise, said his "childhood didn't get let down at all, (Lee as Storm Shadow) knocked it out."

"It's a big, fun, crazy ride, gamsahapnida (thank you)," said Tatum.

In theaters Aug. 6. Distributed by CJ Entertainment.

Thanks so much, Kim.. really appreciate the warm words. Sometimes I forget (or too busy around the forum) but will try to update related BH threads as long as possible. I didn't get to join All In discussion when it was aired in 2003.. still a newbie back then. And I didn't actually watch the complete subbed series till 2-3 years ago when we had it shown in Malaysia, which is just the right time by then. That's how the thread got updated episode by episode. ^^

I remember watching Hotelier in late 2003 (heard so much rave about it from others).. that built up quite an expectation.. that fall short, eventually. The only attraction for me was actor Kim Seung Woo in the series (he's excellent in his role) that I kept watching and because.. believe it or not.. for SHK whom at the time was still dating BH. Anyway.. looks like KSW will reunite with BH instead in IRIS. So.. it's good enough for me.

Well, hope you'll still watch Hotelier to know for yourself.. don't listen to rubes.. I'm just sharing my peculiar taste.

Btw.. Kim.. you asked me about All In press conference.. in case you couldn't find the pic of BH and SHK back then.. just look at SM-BH photo at the GI Joe party. It's reminiscingly the very same hug pose.

^ Thanks rubie for answering few of my questions. Much appreciated ;) . I 've actually tried to watch ep1 & 2 of Hotelier only bcos of SHK and as much as I love her, it's just so hard for me to hang on. Maybe it's bcoz Kyo wasn't the main lead and maybe coz the story wasn't exactly on my taste, not sure  . lol, you watched it bcos of SHK too?

Just wondering you were a BHJW shipper, weren't you hehehe? I honestly wish BH could be with JW cos they look good together, but she has a bf already right?

Kyo/BH had kind of the same pose as SM/BH, hehe, I thought so too  . I think I had been lucky not being withness to SHK-LBH break up, it could be very hard for me as being a fan..and for you too, I guess. hehehe, I'm a person that only want a happy ending rubie, can't handle those kinds of break-ups (j/k) :sweatingbullets: . Aish, my hubby might think I'm a psyco bcos of this affection. . But on a second thought, the break-up was understandable, wasn't it? I'm glad they both do well now but I do still have some questions after the Thirst VIP premiere

Back to All In, I'm still at the very beginning of the elder In Ha after 7 years in prison, he is a macho, temper man huh

I don't know why the opposite-effect for me watching the series compared to others who were raving about it. The leading pair just didn't catch on, but KSW was a treat in his character. SHK's role unfortunately was only highlighting someone spoilt and in need of much attention & love but she is very pretty in the series.

Actually I didn't know about SHK until I followed the filming/airing of All In in 2003. I read she was in the most popular Korean series AIMH but I didn't watch the drama till later.. after All In, along with Guardian Angel and Hotelier. Have to admit that it was mainly because she was LBH's girlfriend. I love Guardian Angel though.. KMJ is somewhat like 'Inha'.. and the little girl is absolutely adorable. Love AIMH too (more because of WB) but the series is such a tear-fest.

I'm glad they both do well now but I do still have some questions after the Thirst VIP premiere

No, I'm not but I am a BH/BD enthusiast. I love Beautful Days to bits because it's my first Korean series that I watched in 2002 and because of BD, I became a full-pledged (read: very hopeless ^^) LBH fan all the way. I love the story of Minchul and Yeonsoo, love them so much.. even picturing them as real people living in Seoul with their family. Honestly I'm more a LBH fan after BD as I've also read back then that CJW & BYJ were a couple so there was no connection. Besides, right after BD, I started following everything about BH. Saw his movie in 2002, Addiction and then I got myself immersed in All In, his latest series then. I remember checking out for tidbits and details at his website and when one particular Vegas pic came out.. looking at the first-time onscreen-couple, I remember saying to myself.. these two are going to fall for each other and they did.

But admittedly, when they broke off in 2004.. going separate ways, LBH and CJW started collaborating again in a new movie plus a series of CFs.. much publicity were on them. And looking at how good & supportive they've been with each other with fan meets, movie premieres, etc.. he's single, she's single (had broken off with BYJ).. so, why not. I love BD and all about it.. so, I can't be happier. Everything about Beautiful Days is always a treat for me.

But 5 years have passed, they are still good friends & nothing more.. so, there's probably just very good & very close friendship between the two actors.. particularly when both are very popular in Japan. BD is especially popular in Japan and both LBH-CJW have been equally appreciated for the series by the fans, thus their collaboration will always continue in good, positive mode. We know now that Ms. Choi has a boyfriend yet she maintains the same close relationship with LBH (similar to how he treats his own sister).. so who knows, maybe things are not meant for them.

I'm a BH shipper first and foremost, if you want to say that.. I'm ok with anyone for him, whoever he loves. Dreaming of (our own) perfect couple is fun but it can also be very painful to swallow when things doesn't happen the way we wanted it to be. Even a real love relationship between LBH and SHK ended with lots of hurt feelings (back then).. what more if something that we imagine so hard turned out to be just.. an imagination?

I've read with regret once how non-fans accused BH as being bitter (quoting tabloid reports, too many speculations hurting fans of both) after the break-up that he doesn't want to be seen with SHK even in an event together.. but now things have appeared otherwise. One thing certain, they've always kept the real reason to themselves and even when BH was hit with endless malicious rumors, he kept quiet for their sake.

It's really good that they are now more matured and moving on the way they should (re: ArtistView, PD Yoon's wedding, Thirst VIP), so.. we hope for happier days for both of them.. as we remember watching All In. May they find their own 'best card' for life.

Phew.. what a long panda-ramble.. just to clear the air. ^^ Don't forget to share about the episodes of All In, the ones you like the most.. we can talk about it all the way.

^ Indeed a long panda-ramble and I love it, thanks rubie for sharing your thoughts  .

I remember checking out for tidbits and details at his website and when one particular Vegas pic came out.. looking at the first-time onscreen-couple, I remember saying to myself.. these two are going to fall for each other and they did.

Really rubie? you must got very excited huh. I can sense the excitement and it 's not so hard for me to understand for why they fall for each other though.

Remember when my friend watched All In, she told me they both looked like they were in love even she didn't know about their love life in real.

I'm a big big SHK-lover, the one and only for me as BH for you and it's quite obvious, isn't it  ? I'm too, ok with anyone for her (well, we can't do anything about that, can we?). I was once a big fan of BiKyo, mostly bcos I was touched when heard Bi brought Kyo kimbap etc.. not now though) but in the end of the day I'm still a SHKer and I know that I'll be happy with whoever she chooses as long as she 's happy. I for once hope they both can keep their love life privat until the last min. for their own sake, less public, less hurt. To make their love life public could sometimes expose their feelings increasing 10xtimes worse.

But dreaming is fun lah  , hope I still can keep the coolness when that day comes :P .

Haven't get time to watch much of All In, gotta be out too. But I notice that Kyo and BH didn't share much on screen time together since every time they meet, they apart :( . Heartbreaking scene when Inha wake up from his coma after 8 months and knowing YS left back to Korea in believing In ha was dead, I cried along with him, he promise never leave her alone yet it happened once again. And such a impressive acting from BH. I like BH 's charater as In Ha very much in this drama, he is a such a temper and macho type, but when he is with YS, he is a totally different one .

I still haven't watched BD yet, just saw some clips of them. I give the blame on SITH :sweatingbullets: . And LBH looked so dazzing in there.

Korean Actors Play Bigger Roles in Hollywood

090803_6647050009.jpg

Thanks to the Korean wave, or "Hallyu" boom, movie lovers can see more Korean movie stars in Hollywood films these days.

Most recently on July 29, a group of Japanese fans flocked to Seoul to see Korean actor Lee Byung-hun at a press conference to mark the launch of his latest movie “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” with his co-stars Sienna Miller and Channing Tatum and the director Stephen Sommers (who made "The Mummy 3" (2008)).

Lee Byung-hun captured the hearts of Asian fans on the popular SBS drama "All In" (2003) co-starring Song Hye-gyo, and also his movies including "A Bittersweet Life" (2005) and "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" (2008). Lee's filmography has attracted the attention of other Hollywood film directors like Steven Spielberg and James Cameron.

Lee will play Storm Shadow, a Japan-trained Korean ninja who is part of the terrorist group Cobra, in his first Hollywood film. Based on the G.I. Joe Real American Hero action figure brand, this movie tells the story of an elite American military squad that fights against Cobra, whose members intend to destroy the earth. Lee will appear in great physical action and fight scenes in the movie, despite the language barrier as a non-native English speaker.

Co-actress Sienna Miller, one of the hottest actresses and trendsetters in Hollywood, will play a femme fatale character, the Baroness, while star of "Public Enemy" and "CSI: Miami Season 3" Channing Tatum is Duke, a special operations forces commander, charged with the task of transporting powerful state-of-the art weapons. The movie will be released in early August.

Also, on July 26, Korean pop singer and Asia-wide music star Rain, or Jung Ji-hoon, showed a glimpse of his upcoming movie “Ninja Assassin” at a meeting with his fans in Seoul. Rain showed some never before seen still cuts and footage of the latest movie, and announced his plan for his next Asian tour "Legend of Rain" this August, while meeting some 3,000 global fans.

Jung also gave an impressive performance as Taejo Togokan in his debut Hollywood film "Speed Racer" directed by the Wachowski brothers in 2008. In "Ninja Assassin," directed James McTeigue, director of "V for Vendetta" and produced by the Wachowski brothers, Jung will play a leading role as "Raizo," a man who received special training from birth to kill ninjas. For this movie, Jung underwent special physical training and followed a strict diet to achieve a zero body fat physique. "Ninja Assassin" will be released in November this year.

Meanwhile, Korean actor So Ji-sub and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, the heroine of the 2001 hit "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Memoirs of a Geisha" (2005), have appeared together in the latest China-Korea co-production film "Sophie's Revenge."

So, the hero of KBS drama "I'm Sorry, I Love You" (2004), and SBS drama "Cain and Abel" (2009) as well as the movie "Rough Cut" (2008), trained very hard to speak Chinese fluently, to play a handsome doctor named Jeff. In the movie, Jeff dumps his fiancée Sophie (Zhang) for new girlfriend Anna. This romantic comedy movie centers on Sophie's cute revenge plans to win back her man from Anna. Fan Bingbing is another Chinese actress, who will play the role of Anna, who steals Jeff's heart. "Sophie's Revenge" will be released in mid-August.

Another top Hallyu star Jang Dong-Kun will make his Hollywood debut in "The Warrior's Way" next year. Jang will play Asian warrior Yang in this futuristic action movie directed by Korean director Sngmoo Lee along with co-stars including Kate Bosworth, Danny Huston and Tony Cox.

Two Top Celebrities Admit that They’re in Love

e090806_01.jpg

Korea’s two top movie stars, Hyun Bin and Song Hye-kyo, admitted that they are in love. Having starred in the KBS drama “Worlds Within” as reunited lovers, the two have become a real-life couple off-screen about two months ago. Hyun’s representative at A.M. Entertainment said the two have remained friends even after the drama ended last year and their friendship blossomed into love just recently.

Hyun is currently starring in the drama “Friends, Our Story” on MBC, while Song is taking some time off. They’re both Hallyu stars with big followings in Asia. Hyun shot up to stardom after playing a temperamental restaurant owner in the hugely popular series “My Name is Kim Sam-soon” in 2005. On the other way, Song debuted when she was only 15 through a TV series called “Wedding Dress.” Since then she made names for herself by starring opposite of singer/actor Rain in the TV drama “Full House” and Lee Byung-heon in “All In.”
