Actor Jin Goo recently revealed some of his closest celebrity friends, naming one of them as a father-like figure!

On March 22, Jin Goo chatted it up in a live interview via the Naver V MOVIE channel. During the broadcast, he talked about the close connections he had made through various projects.

The first friend mentioned in the interview was Lee Byung Hun. Jin Goo explained, “When I was 23 years old, I played a high school student in the drama “All In” as Lee Byung Hun’s younger counterpart. When Lee Byung Hun heard that I was cast, he invited me over to his office to read through the script. Because of him, I was able to film the drama with ease. As an actor, he is a father-like figure to me.”

Im Siwan, Jin Goo’s co-star for his upcoming film “One Line,” was also brought up in the interview. “He has good sociability,” Jin Goo praised, revealing that Im Siwan is even nicer than how his character Jang Geu Rae was in the drama “Incomplete Life.” Jin Goo continued, “I like that he’s really eager when it comes to acting. He doesn’t give up, and he’s good at acting.”

Other friends that Jin Goo mentioned in the interview included Jung Woo, Lee Jung, Kang Ha Neul, Song Hye Kyo, and Song Joong Ki. He even talked about a time he went to karaoke with his female singer friends Hwayobi, Lyn, and Gummy, complimenting their singing skills.

Meanwhile, the upcoming film “One Line” centers around an ordinary college student (played by Im Siwan) who joins hands with a legendary swindler (played by Jin Goo) to rob a bank. It is set to premiere on March 29.

It was an ALL IN encounter at the 2nd Seoul Awards held on Saturday, October 27, 2018. After 15 years, actors Lee Byung Hun and Hur Joon Ho reunited on the same stage. LBH received the Best Actor award for MR.SUNSHINE while HJH received a special acting achievement award (soompi news). Before there were Kdrama bromances as we see them now, there was already Kim InHa and Yoo JongKu in All In.

It was also a special treat to see Lee Byung Hun receiving the Best Actor award from another ALL IN co-star, Ji Sung who was the previous winner. All in all.. all three of them have been doing really well, indeed! yes.gif

8 Times Ji Sung Proved His Acting Skills With Quality K-Drama Characters

8 Times Ji Sung Proved His Acting Skills With Quality K-Drama Characters

For many drama enthusiasts, we all have some actors or actresses whom we consider a must-watch. For me, Ji Sung is one of them. As long as he’s in a new drama, regardless of what the genre or the plotline is, you can be sure I’ll be watching it. The man is just so talented and versatile that he easily captures the essence of each character he dons.

Ji Sung is a giving actor; he is able to elevate the performances of his scene partners. Ji Sung is a consistent actor; he is always good, even if the actual drama is “meh” (cough, “Entertainer,” cough). Ji Sung is a charming actor; he has strong chemistry with just about everyone! Ji Sung is… da bomb! *Cue Perry Park*

Even in his earlier works, he was able to pick up the nuances in his characters and deliver layered performances. With age and life experience, his more recent works become even more complex and fascinating to watch. Here are just some of his most interesting characters in K-dramas.

Choi Jung Won in “All In” (2003)

All-In-e1565534580706.jpg

“All In” isn’t Ji Sung’s first drama. In fact, his debut work is a drama called “KAIST” which aired in 1999, a whopping 20 years ago! But “All In,” due to its wide-reaching popularity and Hallyu-wave-classic status, is often considered to be Ji Sung’s breakthrough drama. Indeed, this was one of his last times playing the second male lead. Fun fact: While other actors were hesitant to take the role, as they were worried about being outshone by the talented Lee Byung Hun, Ji Sung actually grabbed the chance and suggested himself for it.

Despite coming from different social and familial backgrounds, Choi Jung Won (Ji Sung) and Kim In Ha (Lee Byung Hun) become fast friends when they meet in school. While trying to save their friend Min Su Yon (Song Hye Kyo), they commit arson and, unbeknownst to them, manslaughter too. Kim In Ha is sent to prison for his crimes but Choi Jung Won, because of his family’s connection, is cleared of all charges. This split in their paths takes a toll on their friendship as well as bring about changes in their personalities. While teenage Choi Jong Won was the model student, adult Choi Jong Won gives in to his rebel instincts and often lives his life in the grey area — he never veers evil, nor is he ever a saint. It is a hard line to toe, but Ji Sung plays it so well and so layered, which keeps the viewers naturally invested and engaged in his character. Oh, and he held his own across Lee Byung Hun too!

Kim Soo Ro in “Kim Soo Ro” (2010)

Cha Ji Hun in “Protect the Boss” (2011)

Jo Min Hyuk in “Secret Love” (2013)

Cha Do Hyun, Shin Se Gi et al. in “Kill Me Heal Me” (2015)

Park Jung Woo in “Defendant” (2017)

Cha Joo Hyuk in “Familiar Wife” (2018)

Cha Yo Han “Doctor John” (2019)

(News Focus) Terrestrial TV struggling with falling viewership

By Kim Boram

SEOUL, Aug. 26 (Yonhap) -- "Dae Jang Geum," "Winter Sonata," "All In" and "Lovers in Paris" -- These are the names of mega-hit Korean dramas believed to have contributed to creating the Korean Wave in the early 2000s across the Asian region.

South Korea's major terrestrial broadcasters such as KBS, MBC and SBS led the early phase of the K-drama boom as they focused on allocating star-studded trendy dramas on weekdays to catch the eyes of young viewers.

About a decade later, however, the broadcasters, which have been struggling with falling viewership ratings, decided to remove 16-episode series from their prime nighttime slot on Mondays and Tuesdays as part of their cost-saving efforts. Weekday dramas will be broadcast only on Wednesdays and Thursdays from now on.

The move came after a series of failures of big-budget weekday dramas in the first half.

MBC's historical melodrama "Different Dreams," which revolves around the life of Korean controversial independent activist Kim Won-bong, posted an average rating of 4.7 percent throughout 40 episodes running from May to July. MBC reportedly spent 20 billion won (US$16.4 million) for the drama.

SBS' period drama "Mung Bean Flower," which aired in April to July, faced the same fate. The 10 billion-won 48-episode blockbuster received a disappointing 6.6 percent on average.

Their numbers were nearly on par with cable channels' dramas, including tvN's fantasy "Arthdal Chronicles."

Major TV networks' previous popular weekday series that would easily hit 40 percent have become a thing of the past. The historical drama "Dae Jang Geum" broadcast by MBC in 2003 posted around a 42 percent average viewership rating throughout its 54 episodes.

Spoiler

On top of losing ground in the drama sector, their news programs have also been at a low ebb. According to industry data, KBS' flagship newscast "News 9" saw its viewership fall to an average 11.5 percent in the first half of 2019 from a 2005 average of 18 percent.

That of MBC's "Newsdesk" dropped to 3 percent from 10 percent over the same period, while SBS saw its main nighttime newscast slide to 4.3 percent from 7.6 percent.

Separate data released from Nielson Korea, the combined viewership ratings of three major terrestrial broadcasters reached 62.23 percent in 2000 but nearly halved to 33.4 percent in 2018.

Over the 18-year period, the corresponding figures of paid TV channels, including tvN, soared to 17.68 percent from 2.03 percent.

Moreover, cable channels seemed to gain the upper hand on major broadcasters in the viewership battle as the fantasy romance drama "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God" by tvN and the black comedy "Sky Castle" by JTBC overwhelmed terrestrial channels' contemporary programs with ratings of 20 percent or higher.

Dramas on terrestrial TV channels have failed to measure up to viewers' expectations due to their corny story lines and formulaic plots, while cable channels have picked up experimental and flashy shows and created solid fan bases.

The downbeat trend in viewership and the defeat in the battle with cable channels has led major terrestrial broadcasters to suffer massive losses on their balance sheets and downsize.

According to the latest data by the Korea Communications Commission, the state-run KBS posted an operating deficit of 65.5 billion won in the first half of 2019, widening from a deficit of 53 billion won a year ago.

MBC, whose operating loss totaled 123.7 billion won last year, is forecast to come up with some 90 billion won in deficit for all of 2019.

SBS, which refused to disclose detailed terms, said its first-qurter operating loss amounted to 25.7 billion won, compared with 24.2 billion won in operation losses tallied a year ago.

As a result, KBS and MBC have entered an emergency management system to cut down to the bone, scrapping the Monday-Tuesday night dramas, reducing nighttime newscasts and increasing reruns. They announced plans to reduce payrolls in the next few years.

Experts, however, said a decrease in terrestrial channels' grip has been long anticipated amid a change in the media environment as a growing number of people rely more on new kinds of platforms like YouTube, Netflix and social media rather than turning on their television sets.

"Major TV channels have lost competitiveness in drama production. It's just a stopgap measure to reduce some dramas and move time slots," said Yun Seok-jin, a culture critic and professor at Chungnam National University. "They need an innovative spirit to overcome the current hardship."
