What is education? Is it mere securing of good grades and mugging up books? Are those who swot day and night and follow the study curriculum mechanically the ideal pupils? Does the entire burden of education leave any room for original thought? Rajkumar Hirani’s film 3 Idiots attempts to tackle and answer these questions.

The film is loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel ‘Five Point Someone’. It tells a tale of three friends who struggle to enjoy their friendship and youth while trying to ward off the burden of grueling studies in an engineering college. Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi play the three friends. Boman Irani plays a college professor while Kareena Kapoor plays Aamir’s romantic interest.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The music of ‘3 Idiots’ is composed by Shantanu Moitra and lyrics are by Swanand Kirkire. Costumes are by Manish Malhotra and Raghuveer Shetty.

The film has been shot in Ladakh, Shimla, Bangalore and Delhi.

‘3 Idiots’ is a comedy of ideas that is as provocative as it is funny, as wildly entertaining as it is insightful. A laugh-riot that talks about the most important of human pursuits: self-actualization.

class="album-caption"In 3 Idiots, Aamir played a college-going youth, leaving the audience stunned as to how a 45 year old could give the impression of some one half his age.

This particular look was much appreciated in this generation-Y movie. And once again he managed to break all barriers of playing a role.

class="album-caption"Aamir's screen debut was as a young boy in Yadoon Ki Baarat, where he showed signs of being a promising actor. He looks positively cute in that bow tie!

3 Idiots - Movie Review

3 Idiots
Director: Rajkumar Hirani
Cast: Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani
Rating: 4.5

What's It About: Bring out the bugles for the biggest celluloid celebration in a long, long time. God bless Rajkumar Hirani for ending an otherwise mediocre Bollywood year on a smashing note.

You go in to see 3 Idiots expecting the genius combination of Hirani and Aamir Khan to weave magic on screen.

But despite the mental conditioning, the impact of the film is so overwhelming that it leaves you spellbound for hours after it has ended.

Based on Chetan Bhagat's novel, Five Point Someone (though only a miniscule part has been adapted from the book; the rest is all original), here's a story of three friends studying in an engineering college Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (R Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi).

3-idiots1.jpg

Rancho is the rebel among them always questioning things and believing that learning is more than just the usual mode of education.

He encourages his friends to look beyond the ordinary and soon earns the wrath of the college director Viru Sahasrabuddhe (Boman Irani).

Despite his fun and frolic, Rancho always surprises everyone by topping the class. He even manages to win the affections of the director's daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor). But Rancho's greatest contribution lies is making his friends realise their true calling.

The twist comes when on Graduation Day. After being awarded the Student Of The Year title, Rancho mysteriously disappears into oblivion.

Years later, Farhan and Raju, finding a common thread, embark on a journey to find their friend. 3 Idiots is a story of friendship, hope, aspirations and most importantly, the goodness of life.

With 3 Idiots, Rajkumar Hirani proves beyond doubt that there's no better storyteller than him in the present generation.

aamirk.jpg

This isn't an easy film to make the interplay between characters and the narrative is interestingly woven.

The film switches from present to flashback mode often but not once does Hirani lose the momentum. The medley of emotions that he brings forth as he establishes the film's structure is indeed commendable.

Like the peppy Aal Izz Well song drawing towards a tragic climax it's so cleverly done that it has the desired effect. There are scenes that'll make you laugh, they'll make you cry and they'll make you think.

Hirani does it all so beautifully that you want to go back to college and relive all those moments.

The falling in love, the harassment by professors, the secret drinking sessions, the ragging of fellow students it's all there.

Hirani also sends across a message on student pressures but there's no preaching here it's all done in his inimitable style.

Most films have their own set of 'highlight' scenes.

3 Idiots is different because every scene is special and brings with it something that's out of the ordinary.

But there are a few that have a far lasting impact the entire ragging sequence; the camaraderie between Rancho and Pia; Chatur's (the 'brainy' student) hilarious speech; the entire black-and-white depiction of Raju's family; most of the scenes between Rancho and Viru; the sequences that lead to Raju's recovery in the hospital and many more. After a point, you just stop counting.

Dialogues are snappy and totally effective ("In India, you get a pizza in 30 minutes guaranteed but not an ambulance"). The soundtrack, background score and cinematography is top class.

Among the performances, Madhavan delivers his most retrained act ever. He takes the film back and forth with his narrative and is splendid even with comedy.

Sharman Joshi is brilliant, especially in his breakdown scenes. Boman Irani is sincere as expected, with his lisp act getting all the right nuances.

Kareena Kapoor gives her finest portrayal in recent times as Pia. Her "dhokla, fafda, thepla, khandwa, khakra" scene is simply too delicious. Here's a performance that proves why she's indeed the best we have.

The life and soul of 3 Idiots is of course Aamir Khan. His perfection lies in the fact that he makes everything look so easy and spontaneous.

And at all the right moments, he brings the film alive with his sheer brilliance. From his look to his walk to his manner of speech, Aamir breathes life into Rancho and that's what stays with us.

If you thought Aamir Khan couldn't get any better than he is, think again. Aamir is the heart and soul of 3 Idiots and he proves why he's simply a class apart.

3 Idiots 1440x900 Wallpaper # 8

A word about:

Performances: Believe it or not, but Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman actually look -- and behave -- like students. While Aamir pitches in a near-perfect portrayal of Rancho, the free-spirited innovator, Madhavan and Sharman are perfectly in sync too. Kareena as the independent-minded medical student is winsome; debutant Omi has a refreshing flair for comedy and Boman Irani doesn't ham or go over the top even once.

Story: Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi script a warm and humanist indictment of India's rude-crude education system that prepares rats for a rat race rather than thinkers for a new world.

Dialogue: Witty and wild, the film walks away with the best comic scene of the year citation with its uproarious `balatkar' speech.

Music: Shantanu Moitra may not have forced you to pick up the music album of the film but the songs do come alive on screen, specially Zoobie-Doobie and Aal Izz Well.

Choreography: Avit Diaz has the threesome -- Aamir, Madhavan, Sharman -- kick up some wild fun in Aal Izz Well, while Bosco-Caesar rightly go retro with Zoobie-Doobie.

Cinematography: The streets of Delhi and the picture postcard beauty of Ladakh are captured in riveting images by Muraleedharan CK

Styling: Designers Manish Mehrotra, Sheena Parekh and Raghuveer Shetty create the pucca campus look for our rumbustious kids on the block, complete with ganjis and capris. Kareena too is an archetypal Dilli gal with her trendy, not flashy ensemble.

Inspiration: Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone literally comes alive on screen, although the film does not kowtow the book verbatim.

Film: Three Idiots 3 Idiots is a 2009 Bollywood film starring Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R. Madhavan. It is based on the book 'Five Point Someone' by Chetan Bhagat. It revolves around three students studying in the Imperial College of Engineering, Delhi. Out of them, Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) comes from a poor family and is desperate to pass and get a good job. The second, Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan), comes from a relatively better family, but has joined engineering to please his father, while he really wants to become a widlife photographer. However, their third roommate, Ranchoddas Chanchhad AKA Phunsuk Wangdu is a radical-thinking young man, who challenges the educational system at every step he takes, infuriating the headmaster of the school, Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani). Many years after they've graduated, they've all lost touch. Farhan gets a call from an old college-mate of theirs, Chatur Ramalingam, who says he has found Rancho. Abandoning everything, Chatur, Farhan and Raju set out on a road trip, to find him. But all is not as it seems..

Warning: the following information contains spoilers:

Tropes appearing in 3 Idiots include:

  • Arc Words: "Aal Izz Well". In the climax of the movie, saying them even helps to awaken an apparently stillborn baby!
  • Artistic License: Chatur shows off his possessions since his job abroad, including his "new Lamborghini, 6496cc, very fast". He refers to the Murcielago. What he shows on his phone, however, is the Diablo, a decade-old Lamborghini, a thousand cc's less, and not so fast.[*]
Big Lipped Alligator Moment: The infamous Teacher's Day Speech by Chatur. This one contains a whole bag of tropes (Engineered Public Confession, Candid Camera Prank Not Even Bothering with the Accent being the notable ones). Candid Camera Prank: Two pranks within one. Chatur gets the librarian to write a speech for him to recite on Teacher's Day. Rancho and Farhan divert both Chatur (with a prank phone call) and the librarian (by telling him Virus was remembering him, which he understood as Virus calling him over), and then changed some of the words of the speech. Chatur didn't even ask what it means, but memorised it without thinking. Hilarity Ensues.
  • The film begins with one such prank by Farhan to stay in Delhi to meet Raju, to find their long lost friend.
Chekhov's Gun: Rancho made an inverter that could draw out power from car batteries named after Virus in an attempt get out of Pia's wedding. It ended up powering the equipment for Mona's birth.
  • In his first day, Rancho was being threatened by a senior to get his door pissed on. He pulls a McGyver and conducts a current to a spoon which conducted to the senior's richard simmons. His future students do the same thing when Chatur tries to pee on their building's wall.
    • Also, mint sauce. It was first used by Rancho on Suhas' shoes to show his personality to Pia. It's later used by Raju for the same purpose (to show Pia that Suhas' personality hasn't changed) and also to distract Suhas long enough for Farhan and Raju to steal away with Pia.
Chekhov's Gunman: "Phunsuk Wangdu", the famous scientist Chatur is hoping to strike a deal with, turns out to be Rancho's real name. Chekhov's Skill: Whenever Rancho said "Aal Izz Well" to Mona while she was pregnant, the baby kicked. Guess what woke up the stillborn baby? Christmas Cake: Raju's elder sister is twenty-eight and unmarried, a major cause of worry for their mother. Cool Big Sis: Mona to Pia. Dating What Daddy Hates : Pia dating Rancho. Virus absolutely loathes him. Dawson Casting: A particularly egregious example in the flashback scenes. All three actors were in their early forties at the time of filming.
  • However, narrowly averted with Chatur and Pia. Omi Vaidya and Kareena Kapoor were both in their twenties during filming.
Dope Slap: Given to Chatur by Virus after the former recites the teacher's day speech edited by Rancho filled with words that made the speech offensive. Particularly the 'Sanskrit Verse' at the end of the speech. Driven to Suicide: Joy, a friend of the trio. Raju attempts this too, but is luckily saved in time.
  • In the backstory, Virus's eldest son.
Engineered Public Confession: Inverted with Chatur's Teacher's Day Speech. Evil Gloating: Chatur at the beginning of the movie, showing off his mansion, car, job etc. to Farhan and Raju. Well, not evil, so much as just 'I'm more successful than you despite the fact that you scored better'.
  • And again with Rancho at the end of the movie, before he learns that Rancho is Phunsuk Wangdu, the very man his company is going to sign a deal with.
Gasshole: Chatur, oh so much. Becomes a Running Gag. Chatur: I didn't do it! Raju? Gratuitous English: Chatur, again. "Sir, I was born in Uganda. Studied in Pondicherry.. so, little slow in Hindi."
  • Also "FARHAN-itrate" and "Pre-RAJU-lisation"
Gilligan Cut:Pia: No, Farhan, it's not like that. Suhas is a changed man. He doesn't talk about brands or prices anymore.(cut to Suhas screaming)Suhas: MY 1.5 LAKH SHERWANI! Mind Screw: Just WHO is Ranchhoddas Shyamaldas Chanchhad anyway? A rich scion who conferred his name to their frend, so that he could pocket a degree without going to college Mood Whiplash: The trio are leading the college in "Aal Izz Well" and trying to rebuild a friend, Joy's helicopter design. At the end of the song, they finally build it, stick a camera on it and fly it up to his room window only to see... Joy hanging from the ceiling, having committed suicide and the words "I QUIT" written on the wall in spray-paint. Runaway Bride: Farhan and Raju steal Pia away from her wedding to Suhas. Screaming Birth: The trio help deliver Mona Sahastrabuddhe (Pia's elder sister)'s child, in the university storeroom, using an inverter, a vacuum cleaner and a car battery to construct a vacuum pump after she's too tired to push anymore. Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Invoked when one of the teachers seems more impressed by Chatur giving an overly complicated definition of the word 'machine' memorized from a textbook instead of Rancho's simplified one, so in response Rancho gives one himself when wanting to go collect his books. Shipper on Deck: Mona, Farhan and Raju all support Rancho/Pia. Smug Snake: Chatur in the present-day portions of the movie. Until he's promptly shut up in the climax.
  • The Minister invited for the Teacher's Day function at the college, when Chatur is talking about the Principal in the Teacher's Day speech. Until he starts talking about the Minister himself.
True Companions: The eponymous three idiots. So much so that Farhan and Raju travel from Delhi to Shimla (a whole state away) only to realise that a Red Herring led them there and Rancho is really in Ladakh (which is a cold and barren desert, another couple of states away). They don't stop till they find him. Wet Sari Scene

@Krrypton, hello :-h
I voted for this movie because as early as last year, I've been wanting to watch it when i saw at IMDB that it had an 8.25 rating. I just finished watching it and i consider it now as one of my favorite movies. I've seen other Bollywood movies, but for me, this is the best so far. It's all around perfect.I would definitely recommend it to my friends. :-bd

It seems no one is around. Maybe I got the time wrong. Well, I'll just be checking
every now and then and continue with what I'm doing.
