Thanks Baduy for the clarification. There's a world of difference between the two. May I asked one thing? There's no clear scene which indicates that the Chief and the eldest daughter sleep together but she comes and goes and cooks for him in his apartment. Question is there a basis for suspecting the child to be fathered by the chief?

I don't personally worry too much about the romanization of names. (Heck, even the Ministry of Culture realizes they can't regulate personal name romanization, and there would be uproar if they tried).

I just drew attention to that one because the DSS stalwarts are usually so keen on the universal use of that they call "the KRS" (there's no such thing: they mean the R[evised]R[omanization]2000 system,  but that's another, and not very relevant story) and they ensure that every drama has a definitive list of names romanized according to that system which they require subbers to adhere to. Which makes it rather unfortunate when one of the romanizations thus insisted on is just plain wrong, and for a major character to boot.

I imagined that the "Korean translators elite" at DSS must have prepared the romanization list and that you were simply following that. But plainly if you had to rely on romanizing the Chinese name decided by the C-subbers (who are often not sensitive to the ㅡ / ㅓ /  ㅜ alternations in Korean words in general, giving rise to mishearings and mistranslations, especially of some less common words) then it's perfectly natural that you ended up with "Jeong", and doesn't reflect badly on you at all.

Anyway, given your heroically persistent near-solo efforts on behalf of this drama's very small band of non-Korean followers, you are exempt from any criticism of any kind, as far as I'm concerned.

BTW, I spotted a place in ep 01 where the csubs left you high and dry, as you yourself noted.It's around 45 minutes in.  Shin Jo (Shin being my preferred, albeit "incorrect" romanization of a word that I refuse to romanize as "Sin", since it sounds nothing like it), has come into the restaurant very early, before his family had even got up for the day, is now obviously intending to spend the whole night there too. Pyeong Gu comes into the staff quarters and says "How can he do this? Why won't he go home? His house is only a stone's throw away".

The Korean equivalent there of  "a stone's throw away" is 엎어지면 코 닿을 대를:  = "if you fall forward, your nose touches it", which the c-sub tries to translate literally, resulting in nonsense and an impossible riddle for you.

A little earlier in that episode, around  00:36  when little Mi So, en route for kindergarten (and played by the world's worst child actress -- I bet she wiped out the production's entire retake budget allowance) comes into the restaurant staff dormitory, she doesn't shout out 叔叔 as per the c-subs (which I suspect was turned into "Ajussi" by the DSS stock-phrase translator rather than by you, since otherwise you'd have probably gone for "Uncle!")   What she actually shouts is 아빠  = "Daddy!".

This is, of course, a rather unfortunate slip on the c-subbers' part, because right at the stage where we are struggling to work out the character relationships, it deprives us of badly needed clue and also sets us on a false trail (or more than one, since we get the initial impression that the man thus mis-designated "Ajussi",  Pyeong Gu,  seems to be somewhat inappropriately affectionate toward other people's small daughters, which is certainly not what the writer intended.)

EDIT: But later, during the birthday celerations, in a bit I skipped before, she very clearly calls Pyeong Gu 삼촌 = Uncle (normally a real uncle, but sometimes used by children towards a close family friend). So I maligned the c-subbers, who were sensibly using the word that was more likely to be the one the girl was meant to say both times.  I guess the blame has to be shifted onto our little acting non-prodigy, who plainly always has difficulty remembering her lines. Maybe she shouted out "Daddy" once too often in the earlier scene and they decided against a retake, especially since her voice is partly drowned by the men's shouts in the earlier scene, but it's still pretty clearly 아빠 she said that time round...

@prettybo I hope you don't think I'm ignoring your very important question, which we can't help asking as we see in the current episodes that Jae Hyeok is asking it himself, much to Seung Ju's annoyance (not that he intends to dump her even if the baby isn't his; but he'd prefer to know just to what lengths his utter devotion to his crush of ten years' standing is taking him).

But since I have been watching only off and on, and skipping or dozing through long stretches even of episodes I didn't miss altogether, I'll need to do a bit more selective catch-up watching (and listening: some of the things SJ says don't always mean what they appear to do initially: she's a very shifty customer underneath her poor-little-me surface) before attempting an answer.

I started subbing this bec. no other fan site is doing it and I love family dramas.Well, I thought it was a family drama until Seung Ju happened.  Grrr.
Anyways, we can't fault Sin Yeong for going nuts, she was infected by Seung Ju's stupidity. LOLS.

@baduy Yeah i thought you just breezed off it but thanks you didn't. Judging from your mini dissection of the translation process (Korean to Chinese then English?) A lot can be lost in the translation as it is so just watching is not enough right? It's what was not said and the nuances that makes the difference. that's why we need Korean experts like you to point those things out as we ordinary mortals just take things on face value.

Of course I'll wait for your "scenes sleuthing" results! She is indeed a tricky customer - a lot of things going inside her mind while looking poker faced most of the time (is it the character or just lousy acting) . Someone has to read her through and through. .

Your post made me laugh @Prisma , Song Ju was acting high and mighty sleeping with a married man. There is no excuse for that. But, I just feel like the sister n law character isn't going anywhere. What about the sister in law husband, he deserve some of this blame too.

Very bad stream today with lots of buffering, but things are certainly moving again (at last)

Jae Bok discovers by accident, and to his dismay, just why that photo in Ju Hyeon's wallet way back in ep 01(?) seemed so familiar to him, and it appears to be a game-breaker for their relationship. [in case anyone skipped the relevant bit, Ju Hyeon is adopted,  and the man in the photo in her wallet was her biological father, in whose death, it turns out, Jae Bok was implicated in his criminal past: he realizes now that he's the "faceless" person she hates so much and said she could never forgive]. Tae Hyeong and Jeong Hyeon decide they're never going to get parental consent from either side except for a fait accompli, so they just register their marriage secretly and honeymoon in a tent by the Han River. But Jeong Hyeon goes back home next morning (while Tae Hyeong isn't expected home at all, having told his folks he's putting his business on hold and going on an extended hiking trip, which indeed he was until Jeong Hyeon waylaid him (tipped off by his mother who was afraid her son would never come back, but who certainly didn't foresee the consequences of sending Jeong Hyeon after him) and talked, or rather dragged, him into the secret wedding plan. Jeong Hyeon is in big trouble with Dad already for "staying out all night at a friend's wedding", as she claims. So far, only Ju Hyeon knows the truth about what she's done. But wait till Daddy gets home from his hospital checkup ( a present from his son-in-law), to which Seung Ju accompanied him, going back into the hospital for the first time since her wedding. Although by the time the day's through, there will be a bigger problem than the secret wedding.

The previous day, Shin Yeong, (deeply  upset at having just learnt that she has little chance of conceiving, and fiercely jealous of SJ just for being pregnant, quite apart from her suspicions about who the father is)  had given way to her father's insistent probing about her marriage (triggered by his overhearing their row about DNA testing, leading him to conclude that his son-in-law must have had a child by another woman) to the extent of admitting that her husband indeed once had such "another woman", but she says it's now all over and she doesn't want to talk about it (though all the time she's still very much talking about it to Seung Ju). Her father demands to know the woman's name, but Shin Yeong warns him not to press her any further, because if he knew the name, it would "cause huge problems for our family". Whereupon her father gets an investigator on the job, who comes up with Seung Ju as the other woman. At the cliffhanger, he comes upon Seung Ju and the Chief (who's already in increasing trouble on another front as the truth about his hand injury and its effects on his surgical skills continues to surface) in intense conversation on the hospital roof and bears furiously down upon them.

And that was only the bits I didn't miss through the buffering!

I haven't yet finished my did-they/didn't-they explorations of the episodes I partly or wholly skipped. but I'm getting there....

But in the course of that, I'm getting a feel for the sort of thing that catches the c-subbers out and hence causes trouble for prisma's DSS subbing as well.

I spotted one sequence in yesterday's episode (32) that has a number of such spots. Conditionals referring to the past (... if you had only done X back then...) tend not to to get across the Korean->Chinese-->English route intact, mainly because Chinese grammar handles such expressions in a fundamentally different way from either Korean or English.

Anyway, I've subbed the sequence concerned in case anyone wants to see that scene in advance of the full subs. It contains the essence of the conflict between SJ and her sister-in-law.  It's synched to the xVid version, because the 720p Hanrel for yesterday has several glitches which stop it loading into my subbing software at all.

If you want to try it, just cut and paste the subs into a file with the .srt extension, and load it into your player after the video file (the fact that the segment numbers don't start at 1 doesn't matter.) Then fowards to 00:36:25 and you'll see the subs for the scenes.

The main points of ep 33

In the opening scenes, after SJ is rescued from further questioning by the call to fetch her father, the Chief admits to his father-in-law that he had a relationship with SJ. But he assures him that's all in the past for both of them. He says he's prepared to accept any punishment coming his way, but pleads with his father-in-law not to do anything to disrupt the marriage of SJ and JH, who he says have a strong relationship.

It becomes clear that his father-in-law hasn't cottoned on to the suspicion that SJ's child may not be JH's. He takes the mention he half-heard his daughter making of the need for a DNA test to refer to another child already born to some other woman his son-in-law has been involved with. He says nothing in response to the pleas to keep SH and JH out of this, but warns the Chief that there is no way he can ever overlook what he has done.

As he promised JH he would, SJ's father tries to persuade her to agree to JH's wishes to agree to move out of the family home to a place of their own. But she refuses, saying that although her sister-in-law is giving her a hard time, she feels that if she gives up the attempt to gain acceptance by the in-laws so readily, she will never become a true part of her husband's family.

JH goes to see his father, puzzled at why he didn't take his calls to come and have lunch with SJ and her father. He tells him that SJ's father is worried about the problems JH is having with her sister-in-law, and asks his father whether he can't find  a way to ease the tensions between the two women. His father is moved by the strength of his son's concern for his wife, and sends him away before he betrays what he knows (he of course has no inkling that his son knows all about what the problem is, and that he has married her knowing all about her past involvement with his brother-in-law.)

When this strand resumes, around half-way through the episode, SJ sees that her father-in-law completely ignores her on his return home. His wife challenges him on this behaviour as soon as they're alone, but he ignores her question, and instead asks her what her impression is of JH's mood and his current relationship with SJ. She says she sees nothing at all out of the ordinary in the way the couple are treating each other. He thinks hard about that. At the dinner table, he is silent, until he suddenly addresses JH and says "You and your wife pack your things. You're leaving to study abroad." His wife objects that with a baby on the way this isn't the time for either of them to go study overseas, and SJ repeats her insistence that she doesn't want to move out of the family home, but her father in law brusquely tells her what she wants doesn't matter, she and her husband are leaving, and that's an order.

Alone in their room, SJ and JH try to work out what's going on. Supposing JH's father found out about her former relationship, what would happen, SJ asks. But he isn't going to find out, JH replies, so why worry about that? SJ says she can't help worrying that his father will find out sooner or later. So she wonders whether it might not be best to tell him now, of their own accord. Then there would be no more hiding and no more secrets. So how about she tells his father herself what happened? JH is horrified at the idea. "If you do that, we'll be finished. There's no way my father could forgive something like that." SJ's response to that is very striking, and it takes JH aback. "Whether he forgives me or not, I'd at least have come out with everything. And if he couldn't forgive me... then it would still be better than.... better than... She falters and JH anxiously asks if she's regretting marrying him. She notably doesn't answer that one directly. "I sometimes feel like I'm going crazy. Can this really be what I wanted? I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but I never imagined it would be as hard as this."  "In that case, let's make our preparations and leave to study abroad", JH says. But SJ hasn't finished her train of thought. "Sometimes, I do think about leaving. About leaving everything behind and going back to how things were before I married you. If only I really could do that... I'd really like to leave here and turn back time. So when you say we should leave... that really scares me."

Five minutes or so from the end comes the last sequence in this strand. The Chief, coming into the hospital the next morning, is warned by his #2 that the opening of the new Oncology Center has been cancelled. He goes to see his father-in-law who tells him he's finished at that hospital. Even though the acknowledges his work and that his departure will be a blow to the future of the hospital, he can't stand the sight of a man who has wronged his daughter in that way. The Chief accepts the decision, but pleads with his father-in-law to leave it at that, and to take no measures that would cause difficulties for JH and SJ. Before he can hear his father-in-law's reaction, his wife bursts in, furious at her father for what he's done and insisting that she never wanted to damage her husband. Alone with her husband, she pleads with him not to give in, but to accompany her back to her father's office. She's sure she can get her father to change his mind and reverse the decision about the Center. But he reveals to her that he would have to give up his career anyway, because he's losing control of his right hand, and his future as a surgeon is finished.  In a daze at these twin blows, she rushes home and confronts SJ, asking her what right she has to be spared when her husband is paying such a price. "You both loved each other. Why should he be the only one to pay the penalty? He loses everything, while you get to keep everything. You call that fair?"

The actual cliffhanger is furnished by SJ's father, who's been recalled after the checkup he had, to be told he has colorectal stomach cancer.

In the other strands, Jae Bok accepts Ju Eun's father's insistence that he must disappear from Seoul and his daughter's life: in return her father promises to keep the real reason from Ju Eun and let her believe it was mere prejudice on his part. Her father presents things to Ju Eun in that light and says she has to forget aout Jae Bok, but she protests in bewilderment that she "knows all about" Jae Bok's past and background and that doesn't matter to her one bit. There follows one standard Kdrama "arriving just moments too late -- alas --at the bus terminal / train station / airport" scene. There's more life, as ever, in the Tae Hyeong and Jeong Hyeon strand. After pretending everything's as normal at the company all day, as soon as they're alone in the office, they agree to show each other their bank accounts, and to her horror Jeong Hyeon finds out her new husband is as flat broke as she is. She calls him a "tinpot President" because his company's totally in hock to the bank. She wasn't expecting riches, but since she's pretty certain they'll both get thrown out of their family homes when they reveal their marriage, she as assuming they'd have enough between them to at least get them a single room, but there plainly isn't. Tae Hyeong goes home to his delighted mother and says his urge to go hiking is past, but he's admiring his marriage certificate in his room when his sister barges in and sees it. He just about manages to cajole her into not spilling the beans right away. Next day there's a very funny scene with Jeon Hyeon and Tae Hyeong's mother in a cafe, where she thanks Jeon Hyeon for getting her precious son to come back home, especially in such an unusally happy mood. Jeon Hyeon has to struggle to keep her face straight as she's asked to stay on at TH's company and be a "good friend" to her son. His mother says she hopes they'll meet again occasionally, but then she says, of course, since Jeon Hyeon is going to stay on at the company, she'll get to meet her again soon at TH's wedding. Jeon Hyeon is still choking on that one when TH's sister shows up, and the two young women recognize each other. "What, you two know one other?" the mother asks, and the scene cuts out there before she gets to know the answer.

I hope she won't lose the baby and run away from her husband. That's what it sound like when her husband and her are talking. I agree that they both should tell the father the true.

Thanks for all the summary. I was actually tring to save it until subs for eps 30-31-32 are out but I can't help reading your spoilers. Your narrative will definitely aid me in my future watching (when subs are available).

I guess I can start watching again if the end is near.  Looks like this writer is 0-2 after her miserable "Jolly Widows" (no widows and not jolly).  I'm glad someone has the sense to pull the plug on on a poorly written drama, although I like the cast.  The replacement mentioned is "My Love, Madame Butterfly".  Let's hope for the best.
