Behind the scenes with Rania while recording “Dr. Feel Good”

After much anticipation, the ladies of Rania finally make their debut last week on Music Bank. With their arrival to the music scene the group has been generating a lot of buzz, both good and bad.

Recently, a behind the scenes video with Rania while recording “Dr. Feel Good” was uploaded on the internet.

This is a good opportunity to hear the girls talented voices without the music as a back track.

Rania to make changes to their choreography and outfits

201104131016772464_1.jpg

As the controversy surrounding the sexually suggestive content of girl group dances continues to heat up, Rania has revealed that it won’t be a problem for them, as they’ve prepared several different versions of their choreography.

A representative of Rania spoke through OSEN and stated, “Rania has been preparing for four years to debut. They already have several different performance versions for their debut track, ‘Dr. Feel Good‘. We already meant to show off different versions for each broadcast performance, so the obstacle of broadcast networks asking us to edit our choreography is not a problem at all.”

He continued, “It is upsetting that we aren’t able to show the choreography that we feel best fits the song, but we will be changing it up so that this new version will still hold the same intent.”

When asked about their outfits, he replied, “We will be making changes to the girls’ tops. We’re just glad that they are more than prepared for all of the changes they’re facing, despite it being their debut.”

DR Music’s CEO expresses his anger over the alleged bias against Rania

Korea’s newest girl group Rania has been in the works for over four years. They started as a casual idea exchanged between DR Music CEO Yoon and producer Teddy Riley, as the two discussed the idea of introducing an Asian pop group to the States.

Teddy Riley had asked Yoon, “In the American music scene, there still exists a stereotype and a sort of restriction against colored artists. Wouldn’t it be amazing if an Asian girl group were to break that wall?”

Struck by the statement, Yoon (who’s also one of the most influential figures behind K-Pop’s first Hallyu wave generation) readily agreed, and together, the two ran auditions in Korea, Thailand, and China over the course of four years.

Rania began with Thai member Joy, but there were Chinese candidates as well. Teddy Riley had even suggested adding a black member to the group, but it was decided that they would stick with just Asian members. Once the final line-up was chosen, the girls spent four years being trained in vocals, choreography, and languages – all of which demanded $900,000 USD in expenses.

It wasn’t just Yoo and Teddy Riley pouring their blood and sweat into this project; the trainees had to devote everything they possessed into mastering repetitive lessons that strained them both physically and mentally. Not to mention that they were forced to watch their fellow trainees come and go, with a few even debuting into some of the top girl groups in the market today.

But the day finally came when the girls could officially debut, and they did so with strong energy and charisma.

Unfortunately, while they debuted with much buzz over their powerful performance and traditional pop style, the girls were also faced with a controversy over their provocatively sexy concept.

Responding to accusations of ‘noise marketing’, Yoon stated, “Those thinking that we’re merely pushing for their fame with a sexy concept are being biased. Korean girl groups made the Hallyu wave successful in the Asian market because of their strong and well-planned performance style. This is what must be pushed for, but it makes me so angry that Koreans are swearing and scolding them.”

He continued, “One TV program told us that they would cut down our four minute track into two minutes and a half while others said no to the ’spread leg’ dance and even put restrictions on their outfits. We spent four years creating their debut album title track, how can they just cut it as they wish?”

It’s understandable that Yoon is unfamiliar with the way Korean broadcast programs work, as most of his work was focused overseas. Baby V.O.X., one of the first leaders of the Hallyu wave, was created under his vision and spent most of their time overseas. Yoon also spent the past four years working almost exclusively on Rania and his vision with Teddy Riley. In an industry so restricted, there was no way that he could have known that one must cut, wear, and dance exactly what the broadcast networks say in order to receive an appearance opportunity.

Yoon concluded his interview by thanking the members of Rania for holding in their sorrow and dancing and singing amidst the restrictions. But as if his anger could not be repressed, his eyes remained red.

Rania on sexiness, member backgrounds, and working with Teddy Riley

20110420_rania_1.jpg

Despite becoming embroiled in a series of controversies for their provocative concept, rookie girl groupRania chooses to stand by their sexiness despite it all. In their recent interview with JoongAng, the girls refer to it as “their weapon” in surviving the girl group rush.

Check it out below!

Q. “From the moment you debuted, you were put on the chopping block for sexually suggestive material.”

Saem: “We received a lot of criticisms for our cleavage and our thighs showing. Still, we don’t think that it’s enough to call it sexually suggestive. We worked so hard on our song and choreography, it filled us with regret to see people accusing us of noise marketing. It couldn’t be helped when we changed up our choreography and our outfits.”

Q. “Is your sexiness a result of effort?”

T-ae: “Our average height is 169 cm, and we’re all very conscious of our bodies (laughter). A while ago, we heard that Tae Kwon Do was good for body management and we all decided to take lessons. One day in the future when we promote overseas, we’d love to introduce Tae Kwon Do to other countries.”

Q. “Teddy Riley, the producer for Michael Jackson, contributed to your debut single.”

Jooyi: “Not only Michael Jackson, but the Spice GirlsPussycat DollsRihanna, and other pop singers as well. ’Dr. Feel Good‘ is a hip hop and R&B track with an addictive and strong melody that makes it really sexy. Please look forward to poweful performances that contrast against other cute girl groups.”

Q. “You recorded your album in the States.”

Xia: “It took us about two weeks. It was very surprising for us as well because so many popular artists went in and out of the studio. One day, Puff Daddy’s twin daughters would come in with their mother. They were about five years old and had pig tails that were so adorable. They greeted us with shy ‘hellos’.”

Q. “How would you describe the strength of Rania?”

T-ae: “Out of our four years of training, we spent three of them specifically on our vocal training. That’s how focused we were with our vocals. We’re very prepared performance-wise, and of course, we’re confident that our visuals aren’t lacking compared to other girl groups as well (laughter).”

Q. “There are a lot of members with unique backgrounds.”

Riko: “I used to be a child actress and played the younger roles for Kang Soo Yeon, Kim Hee Sun, Bae Doo Na, and Kim Gyuri. During high school, I also taught Korean on Japan’s NHK for three years.”

Joy: “I’m from Thailand. My father’s a general and he was really against me going all the way to Korea to become a singer. After he found out that I was genuine, he finally let me pursue it.”

Q. “Baby V.O.X. is your senior, since you’re under DR Music, right?”

Di: “The day before our debut showcase, we heard that senior Kim EZ had a baby. Such good luck for us, right? Kan Mi Youn senior supports us as well, and Yoon Eun Hye senior said she’d support us aggressively. We’re all very thankful.”

Rania revamps choreography and outfits, adds a 25-second high note part

201104150802779924_1.jpg

Girl group Rania has been headlining for their racy choreography and look, which they were able to deliver in its original form for their “M! Countdown” debut on April 14th. However, they were forced to switch up some parts after KBS announced that they would not allow girl groups to go up on stage if they were deemed as too “provocative”. Raina ended up fixing a total of 10 parts that KBS had problems with, so that they could make their appearance today.

Starting with their outfits, Raina’s garter belts were taken out, and a cloth will be replacing the area that exposes their cleavage. The girls will also be wearing leggings with their skirts/shorts.

In addition, Rania decided to take out the more sexy parts of their dance, and replace it with a 25-second long high note to emphasize their vocal talents.

Their agency, DR Music, explained, “It’s upsetting that we can’t show everything we prepared, but we feel that it’s actually a great opportunity to show that the girls have what it takes to succeed with skill.”

Commenting on the drastic choreography changes, the representatives continued, “Teddy Riley fully believes that choreography and outfit is a major part of a performance. He directed both concepts, and when told of the restrictions the girls were facing in Korea, he said that it could not be helped. He did not, however, agree to the views.”

They continued, “Teddy Riley said that in order for K-Pop to advance more quickly into other parts of the world, such restrictions must be lifted and put in a positive light.”

Rania’s “Dr. Feel Good” aired on MTV’s “Real World XXV: Vegas”

Rania’s been making waves ever since their debut earlier this month, but it seems like they weren’t turning heads in the Korean music pool alone.

Recently, fans caught the group’s title track, “Dr. Feel Good“, being played during the first episode ofMTV’s “Real World XXV: Vegas“. Fitting perfectly with the song’s provocative lyrics, “Dr. Feel Good” was laid over some hot scenes of the cast members engaging in some scandalous activities.

Although the song was made for the K-pop scene, the music surprisingly fits right in with American reality TV.

The song starts at 22:28, so check it out here!

Rania’s Riko, Dee, & T-ae show a different side to their image

PP11041500104.JPG

Riko, Dee, T-ae

On April 13th, three members from rookie girl group Rania shared charming photos of themselves together in various poses.

Through Rania’s official Twitter, the girls tweeted, “The three beauties.”

Unlike the provocative and sexy image the girls have shown on stage with their debut track, “Dr. Feel Good”, the three members pictured above – Riko, Dee, and T-ae - are actually in their late teens and early 20s. Netizens all agreed that the girls actually held an image that was closer to sweet and lovely than fierce and sexy.

Fans commented, “It feels so different seeing them like this”, and “They’re so lovely and cute!”

Music agencies express their frustration over girl group regulations

If 2010 was about controversies regarding girl groups and their stage outfits, then 2011 is shaping up to be about girl groups and their choreographies. Unfortunately, there’s no clear regulation that stretches across the board, and so they shift according to every new press report. The music programs themselves are showing contradictions as to what to allow and what to ban.

4minute, Rania, and Brave Girls had to revamp their choreography and outfits in order to perform, and although it was due in part to the controversy created online by viewers, voices opposing the change have begun to emerge.

Teddy Riley expressed his disappointment over the change, and recently stated, “No matter what, I can’t understand these standards.”

He’s not alone though, as other representatives from major music agencies have begun to complain about the contradictory regulations put out by music programs.

The issue stems from the fact that these music programs will allow it the first time, and then suddenly use their regulation powers if a controversy brews online. The sudden change not only causes bigger expenses since the agency must now design another batch of outfits on such short notice, but creates room for errors as well, since choreographies are overhauled the night before.

One representative of a major agency stated, “Even in countries halfway across the world, fans watch our music programs live now. In such a global generation, it’s absolute nonsense that these music programs are nitpicking at the exposure of belly buttons and certain dance moves instead of looking at the essence of the performance as a whole.”

Unfortunately, agencies have no option but to comply with the unclear regulations, as failure to do so will result in zero chances for public exposure and promotions.

[Review] ‘Teddy Riley, The First Expansion In Asia’ by Rania

Along with the many comebacks this season is the growing number of debuts, and one debutant girl group in particular who’s creating plenty of buzz is Rania.

Firstly, the group: there’s a handful of members (Semi, Riko, Jui, Di, Joy, T-ae, and Xia), who all have the same ‘pretty face’ going for them and pretty much wear the same thing. No surprise there, but it’s when they begin performing that the controversy begins.

According to the media, Rania are just too racy for comfort. The suggestiveness of their dancing is the root of the problem, and they have thereby been ordered to run back to the drawing board and tone down their moves for future performances, or at least cover up their skimpy outfits, which they have just recently done.

This specific issue has always existed in pop culture, and really, artists will still continue selling sex left and right (which does include the men) because it simply works, now more than ever. In Rania’s case, as well as a couple other girl groups, they seemingly crossed a fine line and it was too much for the sensitive Korean broadcasters to handle.

But what does this have to do with Rania’s music?

Well, why do you think they would need to dance oh-so suggestively to begin with?

Track List:

01. Dr. Feel Good (English Version)

02. Dr. Feel Good (Korean Version)

03. Masquerade (English Version)

04. Dr. Feel Good (Inst.)

05. Masquerade (Inst.)

“Dr. Dr. Feel Good, come make me feel real good/ strap me down into my chair/ I’ve been feeling real bad,” Rania sing in the chorus of their lead single, “Dr. Feel Good” (taken from the English Version).

Clearly, Rania aren’t heating up the dance floor just for kicks. There are direct threads, from the double entendres in their lyrics to their risque image and moves. It’s definitely provocative and risky, but that’s what they’re going for. Consider it morally wrong if you want, but it’s right on the money, musically.

Unlike most of the mini albums released by K-pop girl groups, Rania’s doesn’t feature several concepts or themes (a sad/dark song here, a cute, uptempo song there), nor different styles wrapped up in a pretty little box. This mini album focuses on one thing and one thing only: lust. I’m sure that’s not all they have to offer, but Rania are steering this first impression with an exuberance of sensuality and it shows all over their songs (which is a total of two).

For starters, “Dr. Feel Good” has exaggerated melodies in the refrain, very ‘come hither‘ in a seductive way while riding (no pun intended) on an electro-pop beat and transitioning in and out by stuttering pre-choruses. It’s nothing out of the ordinary, but not a bad song at all. It has good structure, a really nice production – not to mention it reminds me of “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics. Great song – but what is probably the most admirable element is the hint of strong voices.

It’s difficult to pin down who’s singing what (partially because I haven’t identified names with faces yet), but the entire thing is sung surprisingly well. They have found a strong unified voice for the group, which is a good sign this early in the game, and it sounds great with this kind of up-tempo song.

I’d argue, though, that they sound even more amazing on “Masquerade.”

What there is to enjoy about “Masquerade” are the connections between the eerie nuances and ‘dark’ feel of the song to the connotation of the title. They make sense on paper, and the way Rania sing it – mysteriously pompous with a hint of seduction – sounds appropriate. More interesting is how well of a follow up song this is to “Dr. Feel Good” on the same album. They don’t sound like two distinct songs by two different artists, but like two distinct songs by the same one, and that’s noteworthy for a rookie group.

I like the stressing of the first syllables of the verses in this song with the subsequent release of tension in the chorus. It’s a very pop thing to do in the structure, but it really adds that extra kick of dimension to the song. However, that’s as far as I think I can go with the praise, because overall, these songs are a hair away from being memorable for me. In other words, they’re just solid.

Above anything else, it’s awesome that Teddy Riley has jumped on this project and has contributed his expertise and support to Rania’s debut. He’s done a great job, but my major let down has to be with the instrumental of both of these songs. They’re very tame at best, with very little build up and flair. Rania’s foray into the music scene could be even more explosive if they were backed up with killer beats. It’s minimalistic, if you will.

But having said that, Rania have massive potential. Their vocals are already decent for K-pop standards and they will only get better over time. Rania also possess great stamina on stage (have you seen them live?) and could potentially tear up the dance floor with the right material.

I like when you can actually tell that a brand new group (or any group for that matter) is trying and giving it 110% to sell their songs, even if there’s the possibility for said songs to be even better, because that’s the whole point. Rania have made it a priority to showcase their vocal talent, and for the most part they have delivered in that respect.

What would be great to see now is for Rania to carry their style (musical and image-wise) and conviction to a more interesting place in order to reveal the creative potential that is bound to develop. They’re that close to having a legit presence in the Korean pop music scene; all they need are the mind-blowing songs.

Overall Rating: 4.0/5
