Shin Ha-kyun Lavished With Praise for His Performance in 'Brain'

Shin Ha-kyun, who plays an ambitious surgeon in the KBS2 Monday-Tuesday drama “Brain,” has drawn rave reviews for his electrifying performance.

On the December 26 episode, Lee Kang-hoon, the character Shin plays, loses her mother to terminal brain cancer despite his desperate attempts to save her. He illegally injects the drug that is under a clinical trial and tries operating on her although he knows that it will do no good.

Shin depicted all the extreme feelings his character went through meticulously and empathetically -- desperation and fear in the operating room and suppressed sorrow after his mother’s death.

The most impressive scene was where he burst out a memory -- crying and smiling at the same time as if he’d gone insane -- of his parents taking him to a pork cutlet restaurant when he was a little boy.

The drama board was filled with messages praising Shin. One said, “I cried all the way watching the drama as I could sympathize with the character’s feelings of regret and sorrow about his mother. Shin shows how an actor should touch the hearts of people with his acting. Others also read, “Shin’s performance was absolutely electrifying,” and “No doubt Shin is one of the best actors of our time.”

Meanwhile, “Brain” topped the ratings chart for the episode among shows in the same time slot with 14.9 percent.

Will it be hard for Sin Ha-gyoon to take the Grand Prize?

Source: Nate via hancinema.net

F111228_009.jpg

Let's look back at the KBS Grand Prizes years past. There have been no cases where a leading character from a drama with less than a 20% rating took the honor. But this man, he's aiming for the best with not looks and connections but only talent. This man is Sin Ha-gyoon from KBS2 "Brain".

Let's say honestly, "Brain" isn't one of the highest rated dramas. It's been rising slowly after the end of "A Thousand Days' Promise" but it topped out at 15.5% on the December 6th.

You can't say that's a bad, but it's no where near enough to make a Grand Prize winner. This is being said looking back on the past ten years worth of KBS Grand Prizes.

"The Slave Hunters" in 2010 gave Jang Hyeok the grand prize with a percentage of 35%, "IRIS" in 2009 gave Lee Byeong-Heon the grand prize with a percentage of close to 40%. "Mom's Dead Upset" in 2008 also went over 30%. Others like Choi Soo-jong, Han Ji-won, Kim Myeong-min also had honors similar to these.

In a country where dramas are evaluated by the standard of viewing percentage, a low one is fatal. Therefore, looking just at the viewing rate, the reality is that "Brain" is nowhere close to being a candidate for the grand prize.

However, Sin Ha-gyoon is different. This can be seen in the Grand Prize rumor that has been spreading like fire. He's being chosen as a likely candidate along with Park Si-hoo from "The Princess' Man" and Lee Tae-gon from "Gwanggaeto the Great". This breaks the trend of looking only at the percentage. The answer lies in acting skills.

Sin Ha-gyoon's existence in "Brain" is extreme. He has to pull of technical terms because he's playing the role of a doctor and thanks to the talented writers, the plotines make it hard for him to keep his emotions under control, but he is making viewers fall in love with the Lee Kang-hoon character and the drama "Brain".

His crying act and the emotional scenes that aren't too much or too little is just enough to be called the best. He's worthy of being called the 'God Ha-gyoon'.

Of course, it's hard to decide where the Grand Prize will land. Sin Ha-gyoon's competitor Park Si-hoo was in a drama that recorded more than 20% and was exported into over ten countries. Also, advertising revenue went beyond KRW14.5 billion during the show. Lee Tae-gon from the drama "Gwanggaetto the Great", which is currently beyond its 100th episode, is also someone we can't ignore.

However, the basis of the Grand Prize is acting. Therefore it would mean a lot for Sin Ha-gyoon to get the prize that is considered the most prestigious out of the three broadcasting companies' awards shows.

^seriously, i'm going to be so mad if shk doesn't win daesang. high ratings should not be the most significant criteria in determining who wins the daesang. dramas can have high ratings b/c of the good plot, writing style, interesting supporting characters, great directing, etc etc. it's not always b/c of one actor. i think princess' man was popular for its storyline and side characters, not b/c of psh. on the other hand, brain is doing well mainly b/c of shk's crazy acting skills. sure, the plot and jjy are good too, but after each episode, viewers' comments mostly concern shk. i already have very little trust in the major broadcasting stations (e.g., political influence, major lobbying, advertising galore), so they better do the respectful thing on this one and at least recognize talent when it's so obvious.

Networks honor top actors of 2011

Capping off a successful year, Han Suk-kyu and Shin Ha-kyun were honored with the top acting awards by their respective networks on Saturday at the broadcasting companies’ annual year-end awards.

Han won the 2011 SBS Acting Awards’ grand prize for his leading role as King Sejong in the drama “The Deep Rooted Tree.” It was Han’s first grand prize for a television drama. Since 1995, the 47-year-old actor hasn’t appeared in TV dramas in order to focus on films, but he returned last October.

Shin received the grand prize in KBS’ Drama Acting Awards for his role in the drama “Brain,” in which he played Dr. Lee Kang-hoon. Shin also made a comeback on the small screen last November after his last series in 2003.

Meanwhile in the MBC Drama Awards, “The Greatest Love,” starring Cha Seung-won and Gong Hyo-jin, was chosen as the best drama. From this year, MBC has decided to give its grand prize to dramas themselves rather than to individual actors.

Man Makes Glorious Return in 'Brain'

Writer: KBS Report Copyright ⓒ KBS & KBS Media

A man has returned in glory to the university hospital he was forced to leave in the KBS2 Monday-Tuesday drama “Brain.”

On the December 2 episode, Lee Kang-hoon (Shin Ha-kyun) successfully operates on the chairman of a conglomerate who has brain cancer at a private clinic where he is working after he left the country’s best university hospital, despite the opposition of his former boss, Kim Sang-cheol (Chung Jin-young). Sang-cheol transfers the chairman to the university hospital after the surgery, angering Kang-hoon.

To return to the university hospital, Kang-hoon tries to use Ko Jae-hak (Lee Sung-min), the chief of the hospital’s neurosurgery department who is only interested in office politics.

Jae-hak is accused by Sang-cheol after he lets the chairman check out of the hospital without telling Sang-cheol who is in charge of him. Sang-cheol, who the hospital’s president trusts most, tells Jae-hak, “Are you a doctor or a businessman? I won’t tolerate you any more.” He is also in trouble after the president hears a rumor that he has often received hospitality from businessmen.

Kang-hoon then approaches Jae-hak with an offer he has asked the chairman in return for saving his life -- that the chairman’s group will sign a memorandum of understanding with the hospital only with one condition: that it hires Kang-hoon as a professor. He also promises Jae-hak to help him get out of trouble and consolidate his position.

The president of the hospital accepts the offer, and Kang-hoon comes back to the hospital.

Will 'Brain' Hit 20% Ratings?

CJ E&M enewsWorld Lee, InKyung

With its finale two weeks away, the last script of KBS2’s Brain, which has been highly acclaimed as a well-made medical drama, has been finished!

An official from the drama said, “Playwright Yoon Kyeong Ah has finished the script for the 20th episode on January 5. The scripts were bound and handed out as books to the cast and crew members. As there is a lot of interest in the final episode, a gag order was given on the cast and crew [on matters relating to] the final episode."

201201090858411001_1.jpg

The drama is scheduled to end on January 17, and has been credited for uplifting viewership ratings in its time slot, which had dropped low with its predecessor, Han Ye Seul’s Spy Myeongwol. Many had been showing keen interest in how much higher Yoo Hyun Gi (producer) and Yoon Kyeong Ah (writer), who joined hands for the second time after Master of Study, can raise up the viewership of Brain.

Master of Study’s ratings started with one digit ratings, but ended up exceeding 20 percent.

An official from the drama Brain said, “Many of the cast and crew members who worked for Master of Study joined hands for this drama, so the teamwork was really good. The amicable atmosphere had a positive impact on the drama. Actually, the first meeting for Brain was as pleasant as the party to close out Master of Study. All the crew teams, except for the art team, which worked for Behind the White Tower, such as producers, writers, lighting, set and technician teams were from Master of Study. We expect that viewing ratings might surpass the 20 percent with ease this time as well.”

Currently, the viewership ratings of Brain have reached almost 18 percent and is in the lead among programs in its time slot.

For the remaining four episodes, the relations between Prof. Kim Sang Chul (Jung Jin Young) and Lee Kang Hoon (Shin Ha Kyun) are expected to turn around, while attention is being paid to whom Lee Kang Hoon will choose between Ji Hye (Choi Jung Won) and Yoo Jin (Kim Soo Hyun). On top of that, the secrecy surrounding Kang Hoon’s father and Kim Sang Chul, as well as Yoo Jin’s daughter’s struggle with her disease will unfold in an interesting way, strengthening the curiosity and interest of viewers till the last episode.
