Yes. For me, KSH-JJH is the best, maybe because I love DMJ so much:blush:

KJW and SYJ also very good

I'm okay with Suzy and IU but not HGI

@Magician  I somehow agree with you - Kim Soo Hyun is absolutely fantastic in Moon Embracing the Sun but, Han Ga In seems to be miscast here, in my opinion. Kim Soo Hyun more than makes up for it, though. She's a fine actress  but, this kind of heavy lifting is not her forte. And it shows in the drama. Her delivery is mostly quite flat. And she looks way older than Kim Soo Hyun. No matter how fresh-faced she is for her age, she simply does not look like a 21-year old, which was the age of her character.   :Twerkdatbutt:

*** Queen of Tears manages to top 16% during this period. The weekend slots are going wild.  :Fist1:   This drama is 100% guaranteed to become tvN’s highest rated drama ever. I am delightfully surprised in how the plot moved along quickly. I hope it will crack past 20 percent before the finale. One thing is for sure, it's already a smash hit! "Queen of Tears" deserves the love! I'm loving every single minute of it - The drama is in the hands of such a capable writer and brought to life by such a strong cast. It brings back all the old tropes but with so much care and heart. Queen of Tears episodes are just getting better. I'm so happy for Kim Soo Hyun! I am tickled to pieces every time he's on the screen.  :heart2:

5 Kim Soo Hyun K-Dramas Which Showcase His Unique Charm

5 Kim Soo Hyun K-Dramas Which Showcase His Unique Charm

From playing a musical genius to an ageless alien and a caregiver in a psychiatric ward, Kim Soo Hyun has showcased his versatility across genres. One of the most popular and sought-after actors, he was also crowned “King of Commercials.”

In his recent drama “Queen of Tears,” he plays Baek Hyun Woo, the “Cinderella Man” in lieu of his marriage to heiress Hong Hae In (Kim Ji Won). Conflicted in his feelings toward his wife, who blows hot and cold, when he finally understands Hae In better, it seems there are several forces at play to keep the couple apart. Kim Soo Hyun’s onscreen presence and chemistry with Kim Ji Won have scorched the ratings, and people cannot seem to get enough of the actors. Here’s a look at five Kim Soo Hyun dramas which showcase his meticulous charm and acting prowess.

My Love From the Star

My-Love-From-the-Star.jpg

Kim Soo Hyun stars as Do Min Joon, a handsome and ageless alien who has inadvertently found himself residing on planet earth for nearly 400 years. The man has no time for humans and their weird ways and keeps to himself. As he awaits to get back home to his own planet somewhere in the vast galaxy, he runs into Chun Song Yi (Jun Ji Hyun), a high-billed movie star. Song Yi on the surface comes across as temperamental and moody, but at heart she is a lonely, lost soul. She ends up taking a class at the college where Min Joon teaches, one of his many professions while being an earthling, and she also realizes he is her neighbor as well. Min Joon finds himself getting entwined in Song Yi’s affairs, and the inevitable happens: the two fall in love. But is it possible for an alien and a human to have an happily ever after or will the forces of nature play truant?

“My Love From the Star” has a timeless appeal and remains an all-time favorite amongst fans. Jun Ji Hyun’s comic timing apart, Kim Soo Hyun has an undeniable charm as the reticent dropdead gorgeous, otherworldly being. His “knight in shining armor” act is swoon-worthy to say the least. And the chemistry between the two leads makes them one of the most endearing couples of all time.

“It’s Okay to Not Be Okay”

Moon Kang Tae (Kim Soo Hyun) is a mild-mannered and introverted caregiver at a psychiatric hospital. His main priority is his older brother Sang Tae (Oh Jung Se), an aspiring artist who is on the autism spectrum. However, their quiet life gets a jolt with the arrival of the temperamental and haughty Go Moon Young (Seo Ye Ji). As a children’s book author, Moon Young takes a fancy toward Kang Tae and does everything possible to get close to him. She initially irks him, and he tries to distance himself but soon enough warms up toward this hostile young woman.

“It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” sensitively deals with issues pertaining to mental health and childhood trauma as well as unhealed emotional scars. Kim Soo Hyun’s Kang Tae is a young man who grew up well before time, given the situation with his brother. Kim Soo Hyun is exceptional as he articulates his character’s dilemmas and sense of responsibility as well as his own struggles. The intensity of his and Seo Ye Ji’s chemistry and the underlying tension between the two is well articulated by both the actors, and we get some memorable kisses as well.

The Moon Embracing the Sun

moon-embracing-the-sun.jpeg

When Yeon Woo (Han Ga In), daughter of the King’s advisor, marries Crown Prince Lee Hwon (Kim Soo Hyun), the union sends ripples of discontent in the palace.

Many, including the conniving Queen, see Yeon Woo as a thorn in their plans to wrestle control, and they hatch a conspiracy.

As Yeon Woo is anointed as the crown princess, the couple’s happiness is short-lived. It is alleged that Yeon Woo has succumbed to her death from a mysterious illness. The heartbroken Lee Hwon is forced to marry another but refuses to consummate his marriage as he is unable to move on and continues to mourn the death of Yeon Woo. When he meets the shaman Wol, who looks like Yeon Woo, it comes as a shock. In the meantime, Lee Hwon is caught in a battle of inheritance and discovers some shocking secrets.

“The Moon Embracing the Sun” is a perfect blend of history, fantasy, romance, and tragedy. Kim Soo Hyun as the burdened King gives a remarkable performance. On one hand, he is weighed down by the crown, and on the other hand he is an empathetic human, compassionate toward his people and pining for the woman he loves.

Dream High

Song Sam Dong (Kim Soo Hyun) may be the country bumpkin, but the boy has an innate talent for music. He lands at Kirin Arts School and meets Hye Mi (Suzy), Jin Gook (Taecyeon), Pil Sook (IU), and Jason (Wooyoung), youngsters waiting to strike the right chord and make it in the world of music. Sam Dong is a simpleton—he is neither street smart nor calculating, and he wears his heart on his sleeve. But one day, when he realizes his ailment is serious, he may have to give up on his dreams and hopes of making music. But, as this young boy challenges the odds to become one of the shining stars on the world stage, his is the story of perseverance and determination, a fight against all odds.

“Dream High” is a story of aspirations, struggles, heartbreak, and friendship. Kim Soo Hyun endears as Sam Dong, and you cannot help but root for him to win. In one of the scenes when he helplessly wails as it finally registers that he could have well lost his hearing, you cannot help but feel his plight.

The Producers

Yet another Kim Soo Hyun drama about following your dreams is “The Producers.”

Seung Chan (Kim Soo Hyun) gives up what could have been a thriving and stable career in law and joins a broadcast station as a rookie producer. His reasons are pure and simple: he is infatuated with Ye Jin (Gong Hyo Jin), a producer of the show “Music Bank,” and he wants to work with her. Little does the gullible Seung Chan know that what goes on behind the scenes are very different from what meets the eye. He also runs into the impassive Cindy (IU), a singing sensation who is cold and aloof.

“The Producers” gives a fly on the wall narrative of the lives of the many people who work in a broadcast station. As each one navigates the hyper competitive yet merciless world of showbiz in ways they know best, they also learn some life lessons the hard way. Kim Soo Hyun is lovable as the wide-eyed and unassertive freshman who is willing to please. As he comes to terms with his feelings for Cindy, his awkwardness is adorable to say the least.

[ARTICLE]   Queen of Tears despite criticism of its melodramatic elements, continues to soar in ratings―Writer Park Jieun's strategy in utilizing Kim Soohyun

While some audiences express disappointment with the melodramatic elements (elements lacking realism) revealed in Queen of Tears, the ratings continue to soar. Despite criticisms of the storyline and direction, the drama compensates for its shortcomings with the actors' performances, enhancing the immersion of the drama. Especially with the development of the 8th episode of Queen of Tears, viewers had mixed reactions. There were criticisms regarding various elements besides the actors' performances.

The storyline of a chaebol family going bankrupt so suddenly was as unrealistic as something you’d expect from a dramatic and fast-paced morning drama. The subsequent appearances of Hong Haein’s family members one by one were also directed more comically than seriously. Some netizens expressed disappointment that under the guise of a ‘romantic comedy,’ the drama lined up over-the-top elements despite having masters of emotional acting like Kim Soohyun and Kim Jiwon

On the other hand, many viewers enjoyed the show for its fun and light-hearted approach. Despite mixed reactions, the fact that there were more positive responses overall is supported by the high viewership ratings. It's true that if you consider the story and direction of Queen of Tears without the actors' performances, it lacks realism and persuasiveness. For example, outdated tropes like a third-generation chaebol, terminal illness, and a plot where a husband is happy about his wife's early death. However, these unrealistic elements have been transformed by the actors' outstanding performances, allowing the audience to enjoy the show as if it was a sitcom.

In Queen of Tears, the actors’ performances really stand out. Especially Kim Soohyun, who plays the male lead, is collaborating with writer Park Jieun for the third time. They’ve previously had huge successes with ‘My Love from the Star’ in 2013 on SBS and ‘The Producers’ in 2015 on KBS2. This means that writer Park knows Kim Soohyun’s acting strengths quite well, which is evident in how she utilizes him in the drama.

Last month, Kim Soohyun appeared as a guest on tvN’s ‘You Quiz on the Block’ and shared anecdotes about working with Park. He revealed that Park Jieun had asked him to 'definitely do comedy.' By taking on the role of Baek Hyunwoo, Kim Soohyun is showcasing a wide range of acting, from emotionally stirring delicate tearful scenes to a new kind of comedic performance we haven’t seen from him before, enhancing both the character and the drama’s charm.

Following Park’s special instructions, Kim Soohyun is proudly displaying his broad acting spectrum, including comedy, through Queen of Tears. Viewers have positively embraced the somewhat clumsy story and direction as sitcom-like elements. Even those who initially felt let down by the drama’s quality have become increasingly drawn to the actors’ charming performances, contributing to the rising viewership of Queen of Tears.

It’s difficult to separately evaluate acting, direction, and scriptwriting in a single work of drama. If these three elements complement each other and engage the audience, it’s considered a pretty good piece. Even though Queen of Tears has its flaws and melodramatic elements, it’s suitable for an interesting and light-hearted watch during the prime time slot on weekend evenings.

*** Whatever next drama Kim Soo Hyun picks right now is definitely going to get even more attention. Let's wait & see if he confirms to take this drama "Knock Off".  Hence, we could learn more about the story as further details are released. The female lead is from the same Label as him so, it's kind of confirmed that he will be a part of this project. Hopefully, it will be a good collaboration. I guess they want to promote an actress from his Label. If this is black comedy, romance is clearly not the focus here. I do think Kim Soo Hyun has skills to nail a black comedy. If there is romance, I don't see any issue with age gap. It's the usual thing in K-drama, anyway. The PRODUCT is his acting not the age. Kim Soo Hyun's name is more than enough to drive any project. Anyway, considering how rarely is Kim Soo Hyun is filmed, the drama will be good. I'd trust Kim Soo Hyun's judgement when it comes to picking scripts. I'm always onboard for anything Kim Soo Hyun does.

Queen of Tears  proved its global syndrome by ranking first in the Global Top 10 TV (non-English) released by Netflix. Since its release on March 9, the cumulative viewing time has been 93.8 million hours.

Major overseas media are also scrambling to shed light on the global craze for Queen of Tears.

Time, a leading U.S. media outlet, published an article titled “A fresh and watchable K-romance that breaks down old customs.” In the article, they mentioned that it’s a drama that twists and approaches what we often expect in K-drama. What K-drama does better than anything else is to create freshness by mixing genres. Queen of Tears is doing this by combining familiar and novel elements, analyzing global popularity factors.

Earlier, Forbes in the U.S. said, “Many K-dramas end with ‘And I lived happily’, but ‘Queen of Tears’ begins at that point,” adding, “It is a work that stands out not only for the solid casting, but also for the combination of a talented writer and two directors who boast a successful drama career.”

The Straits Times, one of Southeast Asia’s most influential newspapers and Singapore’s largest daily newspaper, also praised the “Queen of Tears” for its “dynamic narrative, main actor chemistry, and attractive casting, saying, “It's worth investing your time to binge-watch.”
