The cable channel tvN's reality survival show "Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village 2" topped the viewership rating in all television platforms including satellite, terrestrial, and cable channel on its premiere on Oct. 9.

The spinoff's second series recorded an average viewer rating of 13.9 percent and a high of 16.8 percent for its first episode, according to Nielson Korea. The viewership record is the highest among all previous seasons and spinoff episodes.

The same as season one, the second of "Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village" is set on the remote island of Manje, where primary cast Cha Seung-won and Yoo Hae-jin met new member Park Hyung-sik of boy band ZE:A.

The first episode grabbed audience attention from the beginning as Cha and Yoo had to travel soaked in a rainstorm on a ferry for six hours from the mainland.

The show depicted a natural atmosphere when they put up a tent and made a fire to prepare dinner based on local ingredients. The two, who are both veteran actors in age of 45, shared each other's life story on the porch outside of a room.

Cha and Yoo were happy to be back at a house where they spent three days a week during last season. They also found new 10 quails and a bicycle added.

Cha's cooking skill that impressed the audience last season did not disappoint his fans this time. He made "mulhoe," or cold raw fish soup, for the new member Park, which surprised everyone including the production crew.

Star producer Na Young-seok of CJ E&M's entertainment network tvN, first revealed the spinoff of the successful reality survival show in a fishing village in January. The spinoff went popular along with its original version of "Three Meals a Day" in Jeongseon Country, Gangwon Province, which shows the slow life in rural area where cast members have to grow their own food to cook with.

Na did not feature any fanciful or delicious food in his show. Instead, he sought sincerity and efforts that are put into cooking.

"I wanted to work on a lighthearted show that can highlight the small pleasures of life. I wanted to talk about a meal that is made with vegetables from my garden and have these two guys share their homely foods with their friends," said Na during the press conference.

The star producer's philosophy did not miss out in his new series too.

"There was no place like Manjedo (island)," said Na during the press conference in Sangam-dong, Seoul, on Oct. 7. "Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village 2 is not different from season one. We depicted the story of typical life at a place where nothing is special. We tried to show the continuity and stability of life.

"As we have experience the village before, we have extended the shooting area to the whole island so we can show their relationship with the island's residents," Na said.

"List of Names" mentioned Cha Seung-won's past.

Cha Seung-won came third in place of a list of stars who made their own fortunes.

Cha Seung-won became a celebrity to overcome poverty. He became a model at an audition that he accompanied his friend to. However, the modeling job wasn't enough to make a living. He had become the breadwinner at a young age, and for 3 years of his honeymoon period, the couple lived in an underground room full of humidity.

In an interview, Cha Seung-won said, "I didn't have the financial luxury to try anything. I studied fashion in a shabby book store". Then the IMF hit after he became a top model so Cha Seung-won decided to become an actor. He settled as an actor in movies and dramas and now he's even famous for a TV show. He's currently modeling for 13 clothing brands and now earns over 10 billion won a year.

Cook TV, retro, cable dominate small screens in 2015

By Kwon Ji-youn The Korea Times

Cook TV, music shows and drama series broadcast on Friday and Saturday evenings dominated the small screen this year, with star chefs, big name producers and oldies putting idol groups and reality shows to shame.

If 2014 saw celebrity juniors take center stage, 2015 placed the spotlight on celebrity cooks. Music shows found breakthroughs with innovative formats, while KBS's "The Producers" and tvN's "Reply 1988" kept viewers at home on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Internet shows were a mixed blessing for broadcasters, and cable came out the winner in a battle of sorts with the three major channels and the retro boom has yet to lose steam. Here are keywords that defined entertainment in 2015.

Cook TV

Cheftainers ― a neologism combining chef and entertainer ― including Baek Jong-won, Choi Hyun-seok and Sam Kim cooked up a storm in entertainment this year, teaching viewers how to prepare simple meals at home with readily available ingredients and keeping them enthralled with a sense of humor alongside skills in the kitchen.

"Three Meals a Day," "Please Take Care of My Refrigerator" and "House Cook Master Baek" were among the many cookery shows that came up trumps.

Actors Cha Seung-won and Yoo Hae-jin also proved to be as adept in the kitchen, whipping up feast after feast with whatever ingredients they could get their hands on during their stay on remote Manjae Island in "Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village," and tvN's "Let's Eat 2" brought romance and cooking together in a drama series based on the brass tacks of single life and the food that accompanies it.

Fri-Sat dramas, retro

This year, drama series that aired on Friday and Saturday evenings, which are not conventional prime time slots, prevailed.

KBS's "The Producers" flaunted a stellar cast of Kim Soo-hyun and IU, an original plot and impressive cameos. With solid scripting and great acting, it went from great boast to great roast in just 12 episodes.

Cable channel tvN's "Reply 1988" is now the talk of the town, with props, setting and narrative that take audiences back to 1988, reliving the joys and sorrows of the average working-class family, the purity of neighborhood friendships and first loves.

The success of "Reply 1988" proves the retro boom is here to stay, at least for the time being. The year opened with an "Infinite Challenge" episode subtitled "Saturday, Saturday is for Singers," featuring performances by groups and soloists who dominated the music scene in the 1990s, and S.E.S., H.O.T. and Sechs Kies, idols of the 1990s, are rumored to be considering comebacks soon. Turbo released a long-awaited seventh album earlier this month, and original soundtracks for "Reply 1988" are topping the charts.

Other popular drama series this year included MBC's "Kill Me, Heal Me," starring Ji Sung and Hwang Jung-eum; SBS's "Yong-pal," starring Kim Tae-hee and Joo Won; MBC's "She Was Pretty," starring Hwang and Park Seo-jun; and tvN's "Oh My Ghostess," starring Park Bo-young and Cho Jung-seok.

Star producers

Producers Na Young-seok, Shin Won-ho and Kim Tae-ho are hotter than their shows' cast. Kim, who spearheads the production of MBC's "Infinite Challenge," has carved a substantial fan base for himself, and Shin has proven he is irreplaceable with the "Reply" series. The most recent episode of "Reply 1988" on Saturday garnered an all-time high viewership of 16 percent.

Na's web series "New Journey to the West," featuring members from the first season of KBS's travel show "Two Days and One Night," was also an overwhelming success, despite it being a project for tvN's digital content brand "tvN go," meaning the show's clips were streamed online through a web portal. Expectations are equally high for the latest series "Youth Over Flowers," starring Cho Jung-seok and his friends, set to begin airing on Jan. 1.

Music shows

When entertainers weren't cooking, they were singing.

Music shows on novel platforms were well received this year, with "Mask King" steering the spotlight away from what the contestants look like, or what they are wearing, and instead placing it on how well they sing.

JTBC's "Hidden Singer" made a successful comeback with a fourth season, the lineup of which included BoA, Gummy, Lee Eun-mi and Kim Yeon-woo.

Interactive online shows

Entertainment has witnessed a paradigm shift with MBC's "My Little Television."

The show invited professionals in all walks of life to share with viewers their knowledge and expertise. It brought out the star power in chef Baek, designer Hwang Jae-keun and origami master Kim Young-man, among others, and had them interact with the audience in real time through a chat room.

There were side-effects ― some of the commentary was ill-intended and the producers found it difficult to weed such out. But it brought the Internet, celebrities and audiences together in a unique, content-rich format, a combination that can't go wrong.

Big-name directors flock back to big screen

After a year of crowd-pleasing action films such as “Assassination” and “Veteran,” the Korean box office gears up in 2016 to welcome back star directors who have received international critical acclaim for their artistically crafted films. The big names in Korean cinema are focusing their attention on period pieces, many of them choosing to base films on novels and true stories, and are bringing fail-proof star actors in their casts.

Director Park Chan-wook, known for “Oldboy,” “Thirst” and “Stoker,” takes on an adaptation of U.K. novelist Sarah Waters’ “Fingersmith” in “The Handmaid,” starring Ha Jung-woo and Kim Min-hee. The original novel told a story of intrigue and crime in the Victorian era. Park’s adaptation put a Korean spin on that story, bringing the plot into the colonial Joseon era to spotlight a wealthy heiress and the man who schemes to steal her inheritance.

Kang Woo-suk of “Silmido,” “Fists of Legend” and “Moss” is bringing his 20th film to the screen with period piece “Gosanja,” starring Cha Seung-won. Cha will play Kim Jeong-ho, a Joseon-era geographer who went by the pseudonym Gosanja, in the film that depicts his journey as he puts together the large-scale map of Korea known as the Daedongyeojido, or Great Map of the East Land.

Romance movie master Hur Jin-ho -- whose hits include “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Christmas in August” and “One Fine Spring Day” -- returns with “Princess Deokhye,” starring Son Ye-jin and Park Hae-il. The film will be based on the novel of the same title written by Kwon Bi-young, which tells the story of the last Joseon princess, who was taken hostage by Japan.

Director Kwak Kyung-taek, who created the 2001 hit film “Friend” and saw success last year with “The Classified File,” brings actor Kim Rae-won and actress Kim Hae-sook together again as mother and son following their last union in “Sunflower.” The film will be based on a novel called “It is Over” by Park Ha-ik, in which the victims of unsolved murders return to haunt the earth and punish their killers.

Kim Jee-woon, known for stylish action and horror flicks like “A Tale of Two Sisters,” “A Bittersweet Life” and “I Saw the Devil,” brings another action film in Warner Bros.’ Korean debut production “Secret Agent,” starring “Snowpiercer” star Song Kang-ho and Gong Yoo.

Na Hong-jin, known for action-packed thrillers like “The Chaser” and “The Yellow Sea,” will also be presenting another thriller in “Goksung,” featuring Hwang Jung-min, Kwak Do-won and Chun Woo-hee. Set in a quiet rural town, the film will explore the rumors and secrets that hang over the village residents.

tvN surpasses 2015 profit target with 'Three Meals a Day,' 'Reply 1988'

SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Yonhap) -- Thanks to popular reality cooking show "Three Meals a Day" and family soap opera "Reply 1988," cable network tvN has achieved twice its profit target for 2015, industry sources said Friday.

Advertising for the fourth season of "Three Meals a Day" and "Reply 1988" were the main drivers, the sources said. In "Three Meals a Day," celebrities are challenged to create meals for themselves at remote villages. "Reply 1988" is a nostalgia-inducing drama set in the 1980s.

tvN is owned by CJ E&M, the entertainment arm of CJ Group.

Music channel Mnet, also owned by CJ E&M, ended in positive territory as well, with the fourth season of "Show Me the Money" and major events such as KCON 2015 USA and the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards being the main revenue sources.

Mnet first ended with a positive balance in the first half of 2012. It repeated that last year with "Show Me the Money," two seasons of "Unpretty Rapstar" and "I Can See Your Voice."

"Unpretty Rapstar" is the female equivalent of the rap competition program "Show Me the Money." In "I Can See Your Voice," celebrities guess which contestant can sing without seeing their faces.

CJ E&M is widely expected to give generous bonuses to its employees.

"We keep hearing we'll be getting bonuses," a CJ E&M official said, asking not to be named. "We expect to be paid sometime this month."

But CJ E&M's public relations refused to confirm these rumors.

"The precise figures will be posted in the regulatory filing on Feb. 4. Before that we can't confirm anything," a PR official said.

Cable networks top terrestrial in ad prices

SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Yonhap) -- Advertising on cable TV has become pricier than doing so on terrestrial networks for the first time, industry sources said Monday.

A 15-second spot during breaks for tvN reality shows "Three Meals a Day" and "Youth Over Flowers" now fetches 25 million won (US$21,000), according to sources in the advertising industry.

That's 65 percent more expensive than KBS 2TV's "All about My Mom," the priciest show on a terrestrial network.

"Reply 1988," a popular tvN soap opera that concluded on Jan. 16, charged 22.5 million won for a 15-second slot during breaks. The nostalgia-inducing series set in the 1980s broke the cable viewership record with 19.6 percent.

The latest tvN series "Cheese in the Trap" is also more expensive than comparable shows on SBS and MBC, according to the sources.

Advertising for the web cartoon-based soap opera goes for 15 million won, which is at least 1 million won more expensive than SBS' "Six Flying Dragons" and MBC's "My Daughter, Keum Sa-wol" and "Glamorous Temptation."

Popular variety shows on terrestrial networks like "Infinite Challenge" and "Running Man" also came up short at around 12 million won, which is less than half the advertising costs for "Three Meals a Day" and "Youth Over Flowers."

Even if advertisers buy a package plan worth 300 million won for "Three Meals a Day," their ads would be shown around once a month, one of the sources said.

A package plan offers discounts on popular programs if purchased with less popular ones.

15 second commercial spot on ‘Three Meals A Day’ worth W25m image
Three Meals a Day (tvN)

Cable channel tvN’s top two reality shows, “Three Meals a Day,” and “Youth Over Flowers,” now boast the most expensive 15-second commercial slot among Korean television programs.

It surpassed the amount of commercial fees on major networks such as MBC, SBS and KBS. For now, the commercial spot for KBS’s hit drama, “All About My Mom” is the costliest among shows aired on the three terrestrial broadcasters -- with a price of around 15.3 million won.

Spoiler

image

Reply 1988 (tvN)

TvN’s MVP of the year, “Reply 1988,” with a viewership of 19.6 percent for its final episode, had a price of 22.5 million won. The drama profited approximately 17 billion won just from the commercial fees.

Cable channel commercials in South Korea differ from commercials broadcast on mainstream television, since there are two or three 60 second commercial breaks in-between a show.

Notable TV programs from MBC and SBS, such as “Infinite Challenge,” and “Running Man,” all fell below tvN’s dynamic duo, when judged solely on their fees for commercial spots.

“Commercial packaging,” is also prominent at all broadcasting companies. The system only allows companies to broadcast their commercials through purchasing spots on less popular programs in ties with the popular one.

Spoiler

image

Youth Over Flowers (tvN)

The “Youth Over Flowers,” and “Three Meals A Day” package includes 200 million won worth of an item called “Position in Break (PIB),” which allows companies to place their commercials in the order they favor.

An associate in the advertising industry revealed that most in-demand shows of the moment such as “Three Meals a Day” offers a package price of 300 million won that allows advertisers to broadcast their commercials once a month -- if they’re lucky.
