Hours and days of effort go into preparing a 1-minute TV news story. Behind the scenes, office politics and frantic

activity takes place and this TV drama illustrates the daily lives of network reporters as authentically as possible.

Woo-jin (actress Sohn Ye-jin) passed the highly competitive process of joining the news bureau of a major TV

network to achieve her dream of becoming an anchorwoman. While undergoing the grueling first years as a cub

reporter in the society newsdesk, she comes across a few bitter experiences. No matter how hard she works, her

Cap, Oh Tae-seok(actor Ji Jin-Hee) somehow always finds fault with her abilities and it drives Woo-jin into a rage. But

she finds the strength to rebound and channels her anger into fighting back and becoming a hard-hitting investigative

journalist. At first, she wanted the prestige of becoming an anchorwoman but through Oh Tae-seok's hard training,

she grows into a true journalist. She begins to develop a respect for Oh Tae-seok as a mentor and gradually falls in

love with him....

Woo-jin is an aggressive journalist on the society newsdesk of GBS newsroom, who will do anything it takes to get a

scoop. Woo-jin successfully interviews a fugitive but she rubs the police the wrong way because she interfered with

their manhunt. The officers confiscate the tape that contains the interview. Through a series of events, she is able to

recover the tape but since it has no audio track it cannot be aired on the 9 o’clock news. Everyone blames Woo-jin for

not taping the interview correctly and she finds her job in a tenuous position.

Amidst her troubles, reporter Oh Tae-seok returns to the bureau as Woo-jin’s boss. The appearance of Tae-seok

creates tensions in the newsroom. On the first day of Tae-seok’s appearance, he harshly reprimands Woo-jin and

they get off to a bad start.

Woo-jin grows into a better reporter after handling a variety of assignments and Tae-seok looks on with approval of

her progress. He becomes enamored with the person he mentored. Tae-seok transforms Woo-jin into a better

journalist and those changes also open up Tae-seok’s heart. As Woo-jin and Tae-seok take on difficult assignments

where they are threatened and pressured to back off, they develop a camaraderie that grows into feelings of love.

Woo-jin gradually becomes a brilliant journalist who no longer needs any guidance from Tae-seok.

Meanwhile, Woo-jin is in the running to become the new co-anchor of GBS Nightly Spotlight after she wins the

prestigious Press Award for Excellence in Reporting.

She appears as the new co-anchor of the 9 o’clock news and Tae-seok looks at his erstwhile mentee with pride but

also a touch of sadness.

Why didn’t he have the guts to tell Woo-jin that he wanted to be with her? Tae-seok heads to the airport on his foreign

correspondent assignment while cursing his lack of courage.

But at the airport he finds Woo-jin, who had sped to the airport after delivering her the news, waiting for him.

Misty-eyed, they hug each other.

Woo-jin and Tae-seok then take their relationship to the next level.

Full of hopes for her career, she also finds more time to relax. But when Oh Tae-seok, a reporter who was banished from the newsroom after clashing with the higher-ups, returns from his exile in a small town TV station, her dream is shattered. Woo-jin is sent back to the society newsdesk and returns to her days as a beat reporter. She is then saddled with the duty of training cub reporter Lee Soon-chul, who is a conservative type. His abilities as a journalist are highly regarded by everyone and the network cannot fire him for his disobedience because they would lose him to a rival network. So his bosses try to keep him on a tight leash while the younger news staff trembles in fear whenever he's in the newsroom. Three years ago, he wrote an article that became highly politicized and led to a big quarrel with his superiors, which ended with the network taking disciplinary action against him. He was subsequently relegated to a dead-end job at the network's local TV station. But when the society newsdesk starts to falter, his former bosses call him back to improve the quality of their operations and the second act of his career begins.

Lee Joo-hee (이주희) / Career journalist ranked behind Oh Tae-seok in the pecking order - actress Kim Bo-gyeong (김보경)

She has a secret crush on Oh Tae-seok ever since they joined the company in the same year. But before she could develop the relationship any further, Oh Tae-seok was sent to a dead-end job at a local TV station. When Oh Tae-seok returns to the newsroom, she feels an affinity with him and her emotions begin to stir again.

While she offers wise advice to the chief of the society newsdesk on important matters, she also tries to smooth out any rough patches between Oh Tae-seok and the chief that arise frequently.

After she detects that Oh Tae-seok has special feelings for Woo-jin, she begins to treat Woo-jin harshly.

The drama is written by the writer of "The White Tower", a drama that was recognised very highly for realistically showing the world of doctors.

The screenplay of "White Tower" (based on Japanese novelist Yamazaki Toyoko's renowned work) is from writer Lee Ki-won. "White Tower" is a must-see drama.

Dramas Feature Professionals, Comics

By Kwon Mee-yoo, Han Sang-hee

Staff Reporters

080108_p14_dramasmain(1).jpg

Left, "Before and After Plastic Surgery''

Right, Lee Beom-soo in "On Air''

The New Year will be another one full of drama, as broadcasters prepare unique stories to grab audiences' attention. Korean dramas have always been at the forefront of domestic entertainment, for if a certain drama gains popularity, the actors ride on its success.

Dramas about Professionals

Last year, many TV soaps tried to portray the life of various jobs such as that of the baristas in "Coffee Prince,'' or intelligence agents in "Air City'' and "The Time Between Dogs and Wolfs'' and auctioneers in "Auction House.'' These dramas received favorable reviews ― some of them recorded high ratings ― from audiences who'd had enough of cliche scripts and melodramatic scenes. Continuing this trend, more professionals, from doctors to reporters and directors, are brought to the TV screen this year.

MBC's "Before and After Plastic Surgery'' opened this year's battle. As the title indicates, this is a drama about plastic surgeons. The first episode, which aired at 11:40 p.m. last Sunday, was about an actress who undergoes plastic surgery to revamp her image. It recorded a rating of 8.6 percent according to TNS Media Korea, which is rather high for such a late night program. Some viewers criticized its similarity to the American medical drama "Nip/Tuck.''

SBS "On Air'' is second in the race. Currently shooting, it plans to air at the end of February. "On Air'' is directed by Shin Woo-chul and written by Kim Eun-suk, the creators of hit dramas "Lovers in Paris'' and "Lovers.'' Lee Beom-soo plays the agent of an arrogant top actress, played by Kim Ha-neul. Song Yoon-a becomes a mean scriptwriter while Park Yong-ha plays a drama director.

Another drama "Spotlight'' takes the camera into a broadcasting station and zooms in on the lives of broadcast reporters. The drama is expected to air on MBC in April. The inspiration for the main character is an actual MBC reporter and anchorwoman Kim Eun-hye. Actress Son Ye-jin is the prime candidate to play the lead role.

Last but not least is "Jejungwon'' of SBS, which is a variation of a conventional medical drama. Instead of shooting in a modern hospital with expensive-looking equipment, "Jejungwon'' is set in a hanok (traditional Korean house), the first modern hospital building in Korea. Planning to air later this year, "Jejungwon'' will trace the history of modern medical science, which was first introduced in Korea in late 19th century.

Dramas Based on Cartoons

With original characters and fast-paced story lines, cartoons are filling the relative dearth in content for television drama producers. Previously, Korean fans had the chance to experience unique dramas that were solely, or even partly based on comic books. MBC's "Princess Hours'' (2006), starring Yoon Eun-hye, and KBS's "Full House'' (2004), starring Rain and Song Hye-kyo, were successful cartoon-based drama remakes.

080108_p14_dramas1.jpg

Expect five or more of such cartoon-based dramas this year. SBS's "Sikgaek'' (working title) portrays the story of two chefs who continuously compete in different contests in a bid to become the best chef of all time. Korea's heartthrob Kim Rae-won ("My Little Bride,'' 2004) and actress Nam Sang-mi (TV drama "Sweet Spy,'' 2005) will star in the drama that will air this April. Based on Huh Young-man's popular namesake cartoon, it was also released as the movie "Le Grand Chef'' in 2007.

For those who are into fantasy cartoons and stories, "Bicheonmoo'' will be a treat. Actor Joo Jin-mo ("200 Pound Beauty,'' 2006) and singer turned actress Park Ji-yoon will tell the sad love story between an illegitimate girl and soldier that took place 700 years ago in China. Scaled down from the original 24 episodes to 14, the drama "Bicheonmoo'' will offer a more dramatic and exciting storyline. Fans will be able to see the ancient love story Feb.1, 9:55 p.m. on SBS. It was also made into a movie in 2000 starring top stars Shin Hyun-jun ("Marrying the Mafia 3,'' 2006) and Kim Hee-seon ("The Myth,'' 2005).

Other dramas based on cartoons are under way such as "Tazza'' (working title) and "I Love You'' (working title), both rigorously read by Korean cartoon lovers. The KBS epic drama "The Kingdom of the Winds,'' which is to be aired later this year, is also based on the cartoon of the same name. This comic strip has already been transformed into a game and musical.

This is awesome news! I really like both of them so it's great to see them back onto the small screen :) Hopefully it'll do as well as White Tower. It does sort of suck, though, that Ji Jin Hee had to opt out of Cain & Abel since I wanted to see him act with So Ji Sub.

Yeah, I'll bet that their chemistry would be sizzling... Son Ye Jin has really fine acting, loved her in The Classic. And I'm definitely catching Alone In Love soon! Ji Jin Hee impressed me with his versatility in his comedic role with Kim Hyun Joo in Miss Kim's Billion Won Project, almost right after his role in Jewel In The Palace. It's a great choice of cast!

In the meantime, I'll be waiting for On Air too :)
