I was just re-watching the rooftop proposal scene and looking at WDH closely when she initiated the kiss. A lot of people over at IG are saying that this and KHK's 2nd hospital kiss are both ad libs by SJH and SSH. If that really is the case, then maybe that's the reason why these scenes already look so genuine. It was shot at a time when there's probably already something between them. They were just manifesting their own feelings through their characters. Gives a whole new context to KHK's dialogue after that second kiss, when he said to himself he's in big trouble (coz he had probably realized by that point that he was already a total goner as far as WDH is concerned). It means SSH was the one talking and not KHK anymore.
And the kiss from WDH? No wonder SSH didn't look prepared to meet it. If it wasn't really part of the script, then it was probably SJH doing the kissing and not her character anymore either.
Ah, they're very sneaky this way, huh? Hiding their feelings in plain sight.

But seriously, I think something really grew between them during the 4 months. It was clear that they really hit it off the minute they met, which is why even in their earliest BTS clips (e.g. SJH trying to peek into SSH's halmeoni outfit under his jacket, which apparently she recommended; SSH holding the umbrella for her at the seashore; SSH trying to help her remove a hair strand from her eye) they were already very comfortable and chummy and acted like old friends.
Being old enough to know what they want, I'm not surprised at the quick development of things between them. They both seem to be pretty straightforward and no-nonsense about what they want so that explains why they both had no hesitations in showing that they admire and like each other very much, even in front of media (presscon) or the staff and crew (BTS clips). This is especially true of SSH. I think his "I really like you" is as clear as anyone can get, which is why I bet everyone who's part of the drama is aware of what's going on (if there's indeed something) but they just choose not to mention it or act as if it's not there, probably to protect both SSH and SJH.

I love all the posts here! It assures my shipper heart that I'm not just seeing things but others see them too.
That's why I'm wary of shipping actors because I know that it's their job to make the viewers' hearts flutter and invested in the onscreen romance they portray. Many actors past and present, whether in Hollywood or the Asian entertainment scene, have done this excellently. Yet after the credits have rolled, they and the viewers are able to detach from the romance and accept that it's just for the cameras.
But then, there are others whose onscreen portrayals were clearly drawn from what was happening behind the scenes. Fans of classic Hollywood films would be familiar with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, and Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Those two legendary couples fell in love on the set and the staff and crew were witness to it. The only difference then was that there were no BTS videos to provide receipts. They only had BTS photos.
@PreciousByTheBay I just realized that in the exfoliator BTS, SSH said SJH doesn't like it if he plays around. That statement can have different meanings in English, either literally playing (making fun) or having intimate relations with other women (I'm being very polite here because Merriam Webster's definition is more straightforward.
). The double entendre just makes analyzing that interaction between them all the more fun.

If SSH were still not over his ex and was wishing to win her back, he wouldn't be touchy-feely with SJH in the BTS clips and wouldn't even say she has the biggest and prettiest eyes among the actresses he has worked with. Saying such would have been counter intuitive to the goal of winning his ex back because his ex was one of those actresses he worked with in the past.
2. And if SJH had feelings for KJH (and vice-versa), she wouldn't have said she is ready to date and meet a guy.
Really? If that's the case for both, then SSH and SJH have a lot of explaining to do because all that offscreen interaction wasn't really necessary. They should have kept them in front of the camera instead.
I think SSH's long-time fans can tell us if he's ever been this touchy-feely with a female co-star that he has no feelings for, even as he's carrying on a relationship with another. And SJH fans can do the same.
You're right @PreciousByTheBay, it does run counter to the way their personalities are, at least the personalities that they have revealed to us.
It was their BTS clips that actually convinced me that there seems to be something special between them. And I could see the progression as their drama went along. Initially, they were just very friendly and comfortable with each other, and that was clear with the way SSH likes to make her laugh and how SJH loves to hit SSH whenever he cracks a joke or they have an NG. Even during their presscon, I was already surprised especially at SJH. She touched him freely and laughed with him openly. I'm not used to seeing that kind of behavior especially among Korean actors and actresses, much less at a presscon.
And duh. The "I really like you" BTS clip was straight to the point. If SSH were still with Liu Yifei, he would never say something like that and on SJH's BTS camera no less. And that radio interview when he talked about her eyes.
As for SJH, yes, she's more reserved with her feelings but we all saw how open and comfortable she was with SSH in all their BTS. And I personally think she wouldn't have agreed to doing those kisses with him if she weren't, which she herself admitted in her recent interview. From what I've read from her fans' comments, she's a shy and conservative person, which probably explains why all her onscreen kisses before DM have been the close-lipped, light touch on the lips kind.
I've watched her in CLOY with KJH and I think I might be one of the few who didn't really care much for their romance. I loved Seo Dan and wanted her to be happy and I wasn't surprised when they paired her with Gu Seung Jun as he was the most logical option. I also thought this unexpected romance was a good idea for Seo Dan's character growth (because I loved Seo Dan!) but it wasn't something that triggered my shipper reaction. They had chemistry, yes, and that made the romance work. But SJH and KJH offscreen give me an air of warm friendliness.
With SSH and SJH, there is always that underlying sexual tension (that sizzle or fire, as other viewers have also noticed) in their interactions, no matter the nature of their banter.

This is a nice compilation vid of their BTS using the drama OSTs as BGM. Very cute! Reminds me again why I love these two so much. I hope there will be more FMVs of them. Maybe when the drama is streamed on other sites.

Guys, go to tteokkbokki_couple IG. They posted a short clip on their BTS which Oh Hye Won filmed with her camera. That was when SSH was playing around with an exfoliator.
They closely analyzed the looks exchanged between them.

been keeping myself "sane" throughout the Soompi forum downtime by looking through Twitter and IG for updates. Haha.
Just our luck that our OTP is the reclusive sort with hardly any extra-curricular activities beyond their project, so any interview with them is already a milestone.

Shipper wars? Meaning, a group of fans ship one actor with another actress and they get angry when he gets shipped with another co-star? Well, thank goodness that's not happening with SJH and SSH. Maybe coz for one, SSH's real life relationship with actress Liu Yifei has been over I think for more than 2 years now. On the other hand, the only other actor that I think could be logically shipped with SJH is Kim Jung Hyun coz of CLOY. Yet from what I've been reading even from fans of their CLOY pairing, even though they had good chemistry as Seo Dan and Gu Seung Jun, they say her chemistry with SSH is just much, much better. Of course, I'm sure there would be those who would say otherwise but I've seen very, very few.
I have a feeling if ever SSH and SJH do get into a relationship, they will be low profile but matter-of-fact. I think they're the type who won't really hide it but they won't flaunt it. But if others find out, they wouldn't care less about what others would think.

It's so nice to hear that this drama continues to win hearts and minds with its story and characters. I wish all dramas were written this way.
PDH and LJA will forever have a special place in my heart.
Now, let me just finish my current drama lineup and I'll rewatch this again. Hahahaha.

@YuSanSeul SSH was handsome in My Princess but when I compare him to the way he is now in Dinner Mate, I feel like he has come into his own and seems to exude more charm and charisma now than he did then. In his past works that I saw, I always got the feeling that he was self-conscious about his looks and felt that he was trying a bit too hard to maintain and project that image of a heartthrob that everyone expected of him. All those fan service scenes that he had to do in most of them, like being shown in the shower and all that, didn't help at all.
As Kim Hae-kyung, he seems to be more self-assured and quietly confident. It's like his being handsome is just a fact of life that he's learned to live with and doesn't think too much of. I guess that's why in some online comments that I've seen regarding his performance in DM, they say that they've never seen him exude such quiet sexual intensity and confidence. And in DM, he just seems genuinely happy and at peace. Maybe it's how he truly feels inside now and it came out in the way he portrayed KHK. Not surprising if he himself said that KHK's personality and character is 90% similar to his true self (maybe the 10% difference is their profession.

@Ayame did you watch "Doctors" too? I liked that drama and even thought for a time that Kim Rae Won and Park Shin Hye had good chemistry on and offscreen as well. But of course, I lost interest after a while.
Not sure if that's how it will be with SSH and SJH as well. For now, though, there seems to a be a lot of signs and hints, especially on the part of SSH, that seems to point to something growing between them.
@YuSanSeul I watched My Princess and even shipped SSH and KTH for a time but I got busy. Haha. And their BTS seemed more friendly than romantic, although they were cute in the drama. Funny enough, SSH was handsome in that drama but he didn't seem to be as charming and charismatic as he is now in DM.

@Ayame I read somewhere on Twitter that she was talking about her real life experience about having to work early in life to earn since her parents couldn't support them.
I saw some comments over at IG commenting on the MBC posts that SSH liked recently and almost all of them are of KHK and WDH, particularly their kisses. They can't help but speculate and I feel the same way. And a number of them are analyzing the 2nd hospital kiss of KHK and the proposaI kiss initiated by WDH and also saying that they were all SSH and SJH ad libs. Most of them are also saying that episodes 15 and 16 seem to be more of SSH and SJH than their characters. I'm honestly getting this weird feeling that maybe there's already something going on between them shortly before the drama ended coz looking at their expression during those kisses, they looked so genuinely happy.
Aw crap! I've become really delusional! If it turns out that SSH and SJH are really just very good with acting and are just friends, and it gets revealed that they're actually in relationships with other people, I will swear off shipping for the rest of my life.

@huckleberrymoonriver @Scorpion I found this IG account of dee_galz. The presscon with english subs are there in 4 parts. The translations are very good. It has other subtitled BTS clips too.
I found his interview with the rest of the Player cast there. Krystal was teasing SSH for having said that the first thing he saw with a woman was a hot body and he qualified his answer. He also answered questions on marriage and whether he wanted to get married. I noticed he and Krystal also have a good relationship and she even calls him Oppa too. I couldn't help but try to compare their interaction with that of SSH and SJH. The vibe and dynamic that I get between SSH and Krystal are more similar to the kind that I have with my brothers. It's totally different from what I sense when I see SSH interact with SJH.
I found some clips of the earlier DM BTS as well and they're longer than what's usually posted but they're not all subbed. It's interesting to watch coz you can really see how their interaction (I don't want to use the word "relationship" yet. Heheheh.) developed and changed throughout the drama. Although even then, it was already obvious that they seemed to have hit it right off from the beginning.

@YuSanSeul for all we know, they're already that comfortable. Best examples would be the exfoliator BTS when he was holding her chin while pretending to exfoliate her face (gah! they both looked so soft in that BTS while looking at each other! like they're in their own little world). And of course, when he fell on her neck in that ep 15 couch kiss BTS. She really just laughed when that happened while he didn't even get off her immediately.
I really hope they work together again soon. They both said they want to do an action drama. I would love to see them in that. They would be so badass together. Let it be a film. Or if a drama, please let it be on cable and Netflix.

@huckleberrymoonriver I cannot imagine that 2nd kiss at the hospital being an ad lib as SJH might be offended. I remember reading in the news before that something like that happened between Park Shin Hye and Lee Min Ho and LMH was said to have apologized as PSH was caught unaware by the kiss. I can't remember the name of the drama as I didn't watch it.
But if it was indeed an ad lib, then that will really imply that SJH isn't just comfortable with SSH as her co-star but she also trusts him implicitly not to take advantage of her. Or it can mean the two of them have already reached THAT level of familiarity and comfort between them that such actions have become normal.
Those interviews will be the death of us. If these two have really gotten feelings for each other, it's so adorable how they seem to be going about their courtship. SSH is stating his intentions clearly and is in no humor to beat around the bush. Case in point: I really like you. He can't get any clearer than that. We can add the song too for good measure. On the other hand, SJH is not exactly playing coy but keeping her cards close to her chest, so to speak. She's not being forward about her own feelings but she's not closing her doors and makes sure that's understood too. It's like watching KHK and WDH's romance playing out in front of us all over again. Hahaha.
Guess how I'm spending my first Monday night without DM? Why, watching my favorite scenes, of course!

I've seen some online but I think it was via Google Translate so a lot of statements didn't seem to make sense, or some of them were translated very literally, e.g. she might have referred to SSH as "oppa" and it was translated as "my brother".

It's Monday on my side of the world. No more DM to look forward to after a day's work. Guess that means I'll sleep earlier again. Hahaha.
But it's so hard to get over these two. The drama may have ended but I hope it's the beginning of many good things for both them, as actors and as individuals. And we're all hoping it's the start of something beautiful between them too.
Coz honestly, I've watched a lot of onscreen Korean couples but I don't recall them being as close and comfortable and touchy offscreen as SSH and SJH are. And to think they're such private individuals out of the limelight. Others are saying they're just excellent actors but honestly, all that sweetness isn't even just as KHK and WDH. I get the same vibe in their BTS. Ironically enough, a lot of people say their BTS are even sweeter than the actual scenes.
@fiona628 to me, if nothing else, that BTS of his face falling into her neck shows how familiar and comfortable they already are to each other. Most actors immediately separate after an intimate scene, whether NG or a good take, and take care to keep their personal and professional distance. But in that NG, he stayed juuussst a few seconds longer than was necessary and she was just laughing and letting him be. And when he whacked her as if scolding her for the NG, she just continued laughing. The neck thing was nothing to them. When you watch their BTS from the beginning till the last ones, you'll notice the progression of their non-relationship offscreen.
Btw, I saw a more complete set of presscon clips with better eng subs in IG and I noticed that SJH was already calling SSH "oppa" even then. Do lead actresses often call their senior male leads that way if they're older and or more experienced, or is the proper form of address "sunbae-nim"? I heard Oh Hye-won calling SSH "sunbae-nim" in the BTS that she took.

Their facial features have a resemblance, especially the expression in their eyes when they smile. I can't help but think of a folk belief that if two people resemble each other, they will end up together.
But I realize that couples who've been married a long time tend to resemble each other in terms of facial expression. I'm just saying...

@fiona628 OMG. You and I think alike! This drama actually made me think of "Lost In Translation" and I was hoping the story development would have gone along similar lines, but a different ending. It's also actually similar in premise to a classic American film called "Same Time, Next Year", which was also about two strangers whose paths cross but they never encroach on each other's personal lives, although that film involved the leads having a tryst once every year from the time they first met when they were younger until the time they've become old and gray. They loved each other but couldn't let go of their lives with their families. Since it was based on a play, it had comic elements but remained a serious film.
I would love to see them doing roles like that.
I really hope the producers and directors of the Korean film industry take notice of their acting in this drama as well as their amazing chemistry. If anything, I honestly think that was what salvaged this drama and prevented it from going downhill completely.
@huckleberrymoonriver I was able to watch the interview of SJH with english subs (thank you, dinner_couple IG!). She gave me the impression that she's actually an introvert. Maybe that's why she never realized that she had fanboys because she probably got into acting for the love of the art and not to become a celebrity. She seems to have been working regularly since she entered the business and from what I see, seems to be known for character roles than female lead roles, though she had several of that in the past. But she looked absolutely beautiful even in such a simple getup as an oversized shirt and a half-ponytail. And she did look very, very happy and content. Perhaps the DM cast and crew really made her feel comfortable that her real personality came out. And she did choose the funny scenes with Hae-kyung as her favorites. Reminiscent of the fun and laughter with SSH's own silliness with her offcam, perhaps?

@fiona628 I think a film would be a much better follow up project than another drama. SSH and SJH would have more artistic freedom in a film coz the target audience can be restricted depending on the material. I'm not saying they do anything risque or controversial, but they can at least take on projects that deal with more complex themes that will allow them greater freedom of expression and let them show their skills as actors. They can probably do a project along the lines of what the great Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai and actress Maggie Cheung did for "In The Mood For Love". That would be nice.
Or if they were to do another drama series, let it be with a cable network like tVN. I think most of the better quality KDramas in recent times have been produced and shown on cable. And these cable networks partner with the global platforms like Netflix, so the dramas are immediately available to a wider audience. And I hope the genre would be totally different from "Dinner Mate". SSH and SJH were both wonderful here, but I'd love to see them in something else together.
"Dinner Mate" has made me interested in checking out SSH and SJH's other works. For now, I'm curious about SSH's "The Player", which I've been hearing a lot about because some of his co-stars from there also did cameo appearances on DM. I tried to watch "Black Knight" when it first aired but dropped it along the way. Maybe I'll take it up again now that I know SJH plays an important character in it.
@PreciousByTheBay SSH does seem very happy, no? It's like there's so much joy bubbling up inside of him that he doesn't know how to contain it that he has to release it through silliness. I've been through that kind of feeling and it's like you're on an adrenalin high, like you're pumped up with endorphins or something. hahaha. SJH seems to have a more reserved personality but I noticed she laughs a lot in DM. I saw that in their presscon and of course in all the BTS. And all that hitting SSH. And they don't seem to have any reservations about invading each other's personal space, like in the BTS of their first kiss, when SSH kept on dipping her and she would stand very close to him that her shoulder would nudge his. Or even their earlier BTS when she pulled his hand so she can take a look at his halmeoni getup under his jacket, and when she laughed into his shoulder after the scene at the campsite when she fell on him after he put out the fire. Of course, there are all those moments caught on camera when they would fix each other's hair or that time when she let him paint her nose for their paintball sequence. Can any of her long-time fans tell us if she's always been like this with her partners in her earlier projects?

@huckleberrymoonriver the way SSH looked in that clip while putting on lip balm reminds me of that time when Hae-kyung was working while waiting for Do-hee to finish watching "Breakfast at Tiffany's". That was the exact same expression of intense concentration. I think that was one of the times when I thought Hae-kyung most handsome. Of course, not to say that he wasn't handsome in other times. It's quite annoying how blessed SSH is with good looks that he doesn't even have to try (and I mean that in an ironic way
). And SJH is the same way in terms of the looks department. Makes me wonder what comes to their mind when they look at themselves in the mirror every morning. Hahaha. -

I've always wondered why SJH whacked SSH in their first kissing scene and they laughed. There are no subs on what they're saying. All I could catch was SSH referring to an NG and demonstrating it to SJH by holding her and acting as if his face will fall against her neck. Does anyone what they were saying? I wonder now if that was related to their NG in their 2nd kiss scene when his face did end up against her neck and she was laughing.

Don't you wish SSH and SJH can be guests in a variety show like this one? I'd love to watch them just being themselves together. I can only imagine the oozing chemistry when that happens. And with SSH being his usual, straightforward self, SJH might end up blushing to the roots of her hair. Hahaha.
