I'm guessing that the photos from the film site that you posted on thursday, @syntyche, might be of KGE because of the gun?  Now I'm curious how KGE's character and the King would meet.  It's not like a detective and walk up to a King and starting chatting:lol:.  My hope is we are not going to see them eating Subway lol.  I can't imagine a King chowing down on Subway.

Hahaha I couldn’t help but laugh at your comment because it’s so true! Subway somehow makes their way into every drama. If the king is hungry, his first choice will probably be to run to subway

The more I see KHN in this drama the more I wonder why he hasn't been the male lead before. He was almost the male lead in Moon Lovers... he was fantastic there as well. I still think of his performance at the end as an older, sicker Wang Uk and shake my head in awe. In Angel Eyes he was the younger version of the male lead so that doesn't quite count. But yeah... it's hard to believe. I suppose his versatility sees him getting picked for darker characters more often.

I adore his YS... YS is often goofy and childish but there's also an edge to him which comes through so effectively when he gets serious. It reminds me of his guest role in Missing Noir M where he played a murder suspect. He was so good in that too. Honestly I've never seen him put a foot forward wrong.

All that said, it's true that YS isn't quite the typical Kdrama ML either. He feels more like a composite of MLs and 2MLs that I've seen from the past.

I absolutely and completely agree with everything you said but THIS, this is  :thumbsup: KHN as Yong Shik is just brilliant! He has a boyish charm that I can’t help but adore. I also find his overconfidence hilarious and charming. He’ll shout out his feelings loudly in front of a crowd and I’m certain I’d be embarrassed if I was dongbaek but yet my heart melts and I swoon. I love the way he’s written. He’s not your typical ML and he’s definitely my favorite by far and that’s a statement, considering the years of Korean dramas I have behind me. I love Yong Shik partly because of the character but especially because of KHN’s portrayal of him. I do wonder why he hasn’t been male lead before because he’s phenomenal!

Also, I’d like to just thank the writer for crushing tons of Kdrama tropes:

    - no jerk male lead

    - no noble idiocy

    - yes, we have a disapproving parent but I’m so glad it’s almost ineffective on our couple. The story doesn’t focus heavily on it and neither do the leads mope over it.

    - no wrist grabbing, it’s all about hair grabbing now

Our king looks gorgeously dapper. I'm all heart eyed for this chap

It's crazy how I only get hyped and psyched whenever Lee Min Ho makes a comeback when it comes to kdramas and literally don't care much about other Korean actors. I mean it's not like Min Ho's dramas are better than the others as such because I didn't like some of his work but he still makes me impatient and nervous whenever he's cast in a drama. It's a weird phenomenon lol

I experience that weird phenomenon too . It’s true, it’s not like his dramas are better than others. In fact, I’ll admit I like some and hate some. More specifically, I’m not a big fan of the last time he collaborated with Writer Kim. So why am I feeling this way? It’s inevitable. I’m excited and notice myself checking this thread every now and then to see if there’s anything new. We don’t even know the airing date yet, it may be another half year or more but I’m already going a little crazy lol.

  4. How can a drama be this perfect? I love it so so much! :bawling:

These two were meant to be. Dong-baek must have casted a spell on Yong Shik when he was in his mother’s stomach. Aren’t they the cutest couple ever?

I felt really bad for Dong-Baek’s mother. I believe she seeked Dong-Baek because she’s already accepted her death will come soon. Like she’s said this whole time, she wants to do at least one thing for her. I know she abondoned Dong-Baek but I can’t help feeling sorry for her. I also know Dong-Baek will feel guilty once her mother goes missing.

Hyang-Mi’s brother is horrible! How can he only worry about whether she owes money. Your sister is missing and possibly in danger and that’s all you can think about?! Jfkwhdiebdiehdkhrirbr :rage:

Also, can we say it’s confirmed Heung Sik’s father is the joker?

  5. I like this drama so much! Just everything about it! From start to end! Week after week, it somehow manages to get better and better! It never disappoints! Also, how can one’s heart not flutter for Yong Shik? “Let’s just get married.” Yes yes yes!! I love it :bawling:!

@lollyminx @40somethingahjumma The writer and director are brilliant, aren’t they? They make us suspicious of everyone. I reckon the mother thinks Hyang Mi will not return because of human nature; when someone takes your money and disappears without answering your calls, they most likely will not be returning. I do wonder what’s up with her bruise though. And it’s certain something else is going on with her. She keeps going off somewhere mysteriously.

Also, I know Heung Sik’s name has been clarified for now but he’s not quite off the hook yet in my book. He may not be the joker but I have a feeling there’s something totally dysfunctional about his relationship with his father. Why does he lock his father in? He says the world is not a safe place. Does he mean he wants to protect his father from the world or does he want to protect the world from his father? Either way, at this point, I don’t suspect his father too much. He locks his father in whenever he leaves so there’s no way he’ll be able to just roam around town poisoning cat food right? Their story may not have to do with the Joker but rather an added story to show Ongsan is not the perfect little town it seems to be.

We’re also shown part of Joker’s face in this episode. He doesn’t look familiar so I’m guessing we’ve never been introduced to his character.

  6. I’m screaming! Tell me he does not look royal? He is so dashing and handsome! I can already see he fits his character as king perfectly!

@gtLmh0622 after seeing lmh shooting in modern attire, I was convinced the monarchy world was modern. But I wonder why someone else is wearing hanbok. I can’t really tell but is he Woo Do Hwan? He’s currently in My Country. I wonder if he’s still shooting for that drama and someone got confused believing it’s for The King.

I guess I was judging based on the recent showing of Arthdal Chronicles, which I thought aired 1 week after it showed in Korea. I hope we don't have to wait for the entire season to air before seeing "The King!" I wonder if Viki will have it.

Netflix publishes right after the airing in Korea. Perhaps an hour later? I’m not entirely sure because by the time I wake up, usually 8:00 pst, the drama is already out on Netflix. Of course that’s only if they buy the rights to air it while the show is still going on. I’m really hoping for them to pick it up because I just love how it’s completely subbed and ready to be watched the moment it’s released.

My guess is they’re still negotiating contracts and that’s why we haven’t heard any news. I don’t follow too many dramas from start to end so I don’t know when they usually announce who picked it up. But rest assured, one or the other will guaranteed be picking it up. If Netflix isn’t already interested, Viki is for certain. Who can deny the power of Writer Kim and LMH? Writer Kim’s dramas are usually the hottest dramas of the year. Whether we agree her dramas live up to the hype is another story but time and time again, she has made hits. LMH on the other hand, I’m not just boasting as a fan but it is simply the truth that his name is no joke. They’re a pairing that has so much potential. Also true that they’re a pairing people love to hate but hey, at the end of the day, the hype is still there. Anyone who has been in the kdramaland long enough knows who writes the biggest hits and the names that can potentially carry it to become hit. Netflix may or may not know but Viki knows for sure. And that’s not even including KGE, who has quite an impressive portfolio herself.

LMH's eyes are sooo expressive!  He conveys so much with them!  I think he is amazingly handsome and charming!

I know everyone has different tastes, but he seems to get an unnecessary share of mean-spirited comments.

More than his looks or his acting, I am his fan because he is a warm and decent human being.

I am totally wowed by the new pictures and the interview!!  He is ever humble, diligent, and wise.

I'm glad to have a happy place to share here in this forum.  :)

People throw rocks at things that shine. It just means he shines brighter than all.

Likewise, I became a fan through his acting but remained years after because of the person he is. He’s truly an amazing man with a humble and kind heart. I wouldn’t need to elaborate here because we all know.

  9. Just imagine Yong Shik every time DongBaek makes his heart flutter and you’ll know how I feel about this drama. It is refreshing, heart fluttering and thrilling, and I’m all for it! It’s such a delight to watch and the only drama currently airing that has me waiting. I’ve been following along and loving it week after week but today’s kiss really made me feel the need to delurk and express my love for this show. I really couldn’t help but grin and squeal. Weren’t they just too adorable?

  10. @Angelica Claudia omo, I’m laughing so hard watching the elevator video. The odds were definitely in favor of the fans. They got an extra good few more minutes to stare at him. His reaction was hilarious and adorable

@Sorary @dazzylin I’m on the same boat, I’ve never been noona to any actors I loved before. This is a first and I feel the urge to call him oppa . I find YJG so attractive, I almost feel it’s wrong because I’m older lol.

YJG is wearing dark glasses because?.... either he didnt have enough sleep or his eye bags are super huge or he has been crying.... hahaha... :D

Glad to see they are back, and happy to know Sanchez actually joined them gor the trip too...

How is it all the actors didnt went to the airport together.. haha..

Hahaha because of his mask and sunglasses, I couldn’t help but notice his adam’s apple hehehe :D

I reckon it would cause too much chaos if all of them came out together. They probably planned to separate when exiting.

  12. Ok, I can’t with them and their matching necklaces! If that’s not the cutest thing then I don’t know what is! Why do they have to make it so hard to move on from them? :bawling:

Also, YJG is so damn cute! I cannot with him in that TMI interview. Isn’t it wonderful that the fortune teller predicted him to have great successes this year and he indeed made two major hits? :D

    Hi Heretorant

Me too- just hoping Netflix or Viki buy it

Please let it be Netflix! I love how it’s presubbed so I can watch it right away when it comes out! And it usually goes live one hour after the actual airing time in Korea so no long wait time at all. I’m not too sure how it works though. I don’t follow up with too many dramas but the ones i’ve watched so far on Netflix are TVN dramas. Do they invest in other network dramas as well? I love Viki too but I’m impatient and can’t wait for it to be fully subbed. I refresh the screen all day long to see when a drama is 100% subbed lol. I’d make my bet one or the other will be snatching it though. And really, i’ll just be ecstatic to have a place where I can watch it.

Just finished reading the discussions over at bitchesoverdramas and DramaBeans. It feels good to read beautiful and insightful comments, and that discussions are still going on even after HDL is over. It's comforting in a way.

Also, I may be in the minority but I don't want a season 2 with KSH. I just feel greedy/selfish (?) about HDL that I just want the story to be about MW and CS, no one else. But that's just me. This is why I haven't commented on season 2 ever. :D

Ooh and another thing, in my previous post, I talked about IU looking more sincere in some scenes. YJG did a good job too and one thing I want to give him credit for is creating a character that would match MW. To be honest, I felt bad for CS due to MW's treatment. I personally dislike rudeness and it was a little painful at times seeing MW treat CS the way she did, although all along I know they're in love, but then it was good to see CS create a character that did not only endure this treatment but turn the tables around. We can see this when he kept on teasing MW and calling her on her bluff. I don't think this would have worked if another actor took on the role like Ji Soo (I came across an old article where he was being considered for the role of CS). So kudos to YJG for creating CS as his own character, and for knowing CS well enough to do this.

You’re not alone on feeling that way towards season 2. The drama ended beautifully so let it be. I also think it would be difficult to write another story as compelling as this one. HDL is special because it showed us a secret world that’s new to dramaland. We’ve already explored the world so this concept can be overdone if there’s a continuation. Sometimes a drama needs to end to make it good.

As for YJG as CS, I cannot imagine anyone else playing the role. He has a boyish yet manly charm that fits perfectly with the character. I must say it’s difficult to shine next to a character as deep and as wonderfully constructed as MW but I somehow walked away craving more YJG. He definitely left a deep impression on me even though we never knew much of CS’s story and his sole purpose in the HDL was to be placed there for MW’s story to move along. I believe YJG did as much as he can with the role he was given. Anyone who really wants to test his acting though should give the crowned clown a go because he was absolutely brilliant and his performance was nothing short of phenomenal!

  15. I understand their love was never meant to last and they always knew separation was at the end of their journey but is it more painful to hold on to sweet memories or to regret not having done them? The latter is more painful to me. When someone leaves this world, I believe we never regret having shared wonderful times with them. We do, however, regret the things we could have done or said but never had the chance or courage to. Perhaps this is why I can’t come to accept their lack of skinship. They didn’t take advantage of the time they had left because they were afraid of falling deeper. It’s cowardly and I don’t believe it’s realistic. In reality, separation is at the end of the road for all  relationships but if we lived the way ManChan did, we’ll waste our lives away being too afraid of getting hurt. I understand their situation is different because they knew the end was near but I still can’t help but feel they allowed the ending to control them. I guess this is also why I can’t let go of the drama, their love is too sad. It still feels like it’s trapped in a bottle and I wish they were able to release it. Or like some of you may say, the line should have been crossed. The problem is not that they didn’t love each other, the problem is that they loved each other so much but could not show it. And just like one would regret not having shown their love enough to the one who left, I feel regretful for ManChan.

*edit* I realize it’s not the lack of skinship but more so that it seems they were always holding back when it comes to showing their love for each other.

  16. Hi, long time lurker here coming out to express her frustration. I’ve decided I cannot just pass by and leave no traces :D. I just can’t help but wonder why CS has to suffer. Knowing that he lives the rest of his life without her is just too heart breaking.

I must admit I’ve been ignoring every sign this drama has hinted towards the ending because I felt it was only right that after all the suffering, MW would be granted a happy life with CS. I fooled myself into believing the Hong Sistsers were only teasing with all the recurring “letting go” messages and they’d never not allow these two to have a sad ending. I sat back at all those mellow scenes and rolled my eyes. And now i regret it because I could have loved the drama more had I known their end was really approaching. I hate it when dramas focus so much on one conflict only to dismiss it easily in the end as though it shouldn’t have been a big problem to begin with. So I’m glad HDL didn’t do that. My only regret is that instead of feeling their pain of losing one another, I kept thinking to myself, “they’ll end up so there’s no need to be sad.” I could have let it sink in and allowed myself to immerse in their story. I guess I never crossed that line with them. I’ll have to go back and rewatch this drama to appreciate it on a deeper level. The ending definitely makes me sad but it makes the drama a more beautiful and remeberable one. My heart will ache for this couple for years to come.
