Lee Hyeri Shares Her Reasons For Starring In ‘My Roommate Is A Gumiho’

Lee Hyeri can name two reasons she decided to play Lee Dam in My Roommate Is A Gumiho.

One reason given by the actress, known simply as Hyeri, is that she finds it easy to relate to her character. Lee Dam is an upbeat college student who falls for a mythical creature known as a gumiho. She’s honest, optimistic and brave enough to consider dating a dangerous creature.

“Lee Dam is a character who expresses her feelings honestly,” said Hyeri. “I thought we had a lot in common and I’ve always wanted to play a confident character like her. That’s how I decided to star in it.”

    Also, Hyeri loves fantasy rom-coms.

“I wanted to do a good job because it’s my favorite genre,” she said. “The script consists of romance and comedy evenly. I thought about how to make the viewers’ hearts flutter when they watch. And I focused on the chemistry with Woo-yeo.”

Her character’s chemistry with Woo-yeo did prompt some heart fluttering among the drama’s fans and helped score impressive ratings.

Woo-yeo, played by Jang Ki-yong, is a gumiho or nine-tailed fox, who transforms into an irresistibly attractive human being. Being that attractive makes it easier for a gumiho to seduce victims and extract their energy. While Woo-yeo seduces multiple victims during his 999 years, he develops feelings for Lee Dam. He can’t bear to hurt her, but also worries about loving her. It’s not the first Korean drama to explore the dangers of falling for a gumiho. What is it about gumihos that makes them such a popular character in romantic dramas?

“Most gumihos are scary beings in ghost stories,” said Hyeri. “I think seeing the other side of the fearful being attracts people’s attention.”

“Also,” Hyeri adds with a smile, “People fall for it because gumihos are enchanting beings that seduce people.”

She enjoyed working with Jang and co-stars Kang Han-Na, Kim Do-Wan and Bae In-Hyuk. It was a comfortable set to work on.

“Because all the actors in the drama are in the same age group, we were able to stay as friends,” she said. “We took sticker pictures during the break, shared hot packs and heated vests since we shot in the cold winter and we went for a meal together after the shoot. We spent a lot of time together. It’s not that any one incident was particularly funny. We had a nice time during the whole shooting.”

Hyeri, who debuted as a singer in the group Girls Day, is best known for her role in the nostalgic television drama Reply 1988, which made ratings history on Korean cable television. She followed that role by appearing in the dramas Miss Lee, Two Cops and Entertainer as well as hosting a slew of award shows. Her next TV role will be playing an aristocrat’s daughter in the historical drama When Flowers Bloom, I Think of the Moon, with Yoo Seung-ho, Byeon Woo-seok and Kang Mi-na.

Hyeri so enjoyed filming My Roommate Is A Gumiho that she cried when it ended. She was very happy to hear that a lot of people watched the drama—and loved it even from far away. She hopes to meet her fans in person soon.

“Please support Dam and Woo-yeo to the end,” she said. “Please continue watching and supporting it. Take care and I wish you happiness!”

I haven’t watched it but apparently it was a good movie. Positive reviews also there’s a plot twist to it at the end

      Reveal hidden contents

Actually JKY was playing two characters but it didn’t get shown until the end so people were like DAFUQ?! In a good way lol

Ah I see. Thank you for the spoiler.  Saw this movie in my Netflix list but due to stressful pandemic situation, I choose not to watch any stressful, too much drama genre so that I could keep my day as usual.. hahahaha

@orion00 yes! The casting was so good. I couldn't think of any other actors who suited the characters more than them. Some say JKY declined the offer for Record of Youth (I'm surprised about this because the role suits him) and Mr. Queen (saeguk which he likes to try), but apparently MRIAG came at the right time when he chose it and considering he has worked with the director in the past (Kill It).

I didn't know that he was cast for these two drama. Park Bo Gum playing the main lead right? I didn't watch this drama because I feel bored at some point.

The Queen is a good drama and I really enjoyed so much. What is the character cast for JKY? Maybe he is not ready to play saeguk drama.

MRIAG not that high-rated but we getting a lot of recognition internationally and locally for this drama. Maybe he take some time to get proper drama for him. Frankly speaking even many of his fans coming from his previous drama, but the attraction is unlike MRIAG that sparks a lot of fire and talks among the netizen.

I'm just curious, what is the review for the Sweet and Sour movie? It is good? It's seems that people didn't like his character in that movie which is total jerk but he is so well-loved in MRIAG.

  4. @xprosperity about the jacket, what Mountain God means that Woo Yeo is the type will open himself (or humane in this context) when he is happy.

He need to be with other people, mingle around and have conservation like other people and need to be more sympathy to another human being besides Dam. Thanks what Hye Sun tried to mentioned to Woo Yeo using the coins but he failed to understand it.

  5. @Heedonghe seems taking his time talking about sister thing

But who are we to judge their relationship. I'm just curious in this drama both of them accept the offer directly without any much hesitation. It's kind that this drama made for them.

The first scene they shoot is the one Lee Dam shallow the marble. I can see Ki Yong a bit reserved in the first place in the bts but immediately change his personality when Hyeri apologised to him hitting his chest so hard and  they laughed together.

  6. @inaho101 the editorial picture, tvn character interview was done at the same day if I'm not mistaken (in April). Just look at their hair styles and JKY accidentally mentioned about shooting picture (in the tvn character interview).

JKY also mentioned in the interview it's good that doing the character interview since they have finished shooting for sometime and they are remembering the specific scene.

Yes, in Volume Up and editorial interview we can see how JKY try not to cross the line too much with Hyeri. He is such a gentleman in this aspect. But one thing I like about they in most interview they speak each other real name not the characters name like other actor and actress in the drama promotion to make it more professional.

One thing I like them how they look at each other during the interview. Of course they need to move on quickly but we as fans can't help seeing how great their chemistry and tender look even off cam.

  7. @Heedong tempted to do the shipping thread but I don't want both of them get hatred post if the shipping thread exist. People can be very mean online.

Just let us ship them in our heart.. lol

I hope they will do another rom-com again (maybe after JKY finish his enlistment). Hyeri is so good doing rom-com and light up the mood!!

I really like when they are smiling fondly and sweetly for each other (same as in their first drama). If I'm not mistaken the editorial picture was taken after they finished shooting MRIAG (maybe few weeks/month after that?) We can see how they chemistry still as bright as a diamond.

@inaho101 JKY is more relaxed with Hyeri while with other actress either he is too shy or can be playful too (like come and hug me interview but the FL too shy and reserved).

But with Hyeri, JKY like showing his true self and following Hyeri leads. Maybe because they talked a lot with all the casts and each other makes the environment more merrier and happy.

What I can say, in MRIG all interviews, JKY consistently mentioned how Hyeri help him so much in this drama especially when he is facing difficulties and want Hyeri to acknowledge how sincere how he feel about it.

The only thing I didnt not like was how Dam chose to drop her class because of those annoying brats. Sure, its just a class she can take it next semester but I really wanted WY to step up and say something

This hesitancy is his biggest flaw, he just takes whatever she does for him as is ; only realizing the meaning and consequences late. I guess that sense will be his last bit of humanity

I cant remember if Dam dropped the class in the Webtoon but again its my only gripe. In her aim to make him human again she has put herself in the backseat.

Anyhow, the last 2 mins is going to live rent free till next wednesday.

Don't worry so much about dropping the course. A lot of students did that for many reason. I guess the drama want to keep some scene as close to the real life as possible. It just one course by the way and she can take it again next semester. Orisihin will definitely pay Dam's fees for next semester.. lol

I know in Korea they don't really have maximum semester and many students defers semester too. But this just drama right? It is better she drop the course rather than taking Woo Yeo class and dating with him.

In my previous post few weeks back, I don't prefer the drama keep Woo Yeo as professor. He should stick as history writer instead to make the drama less awkward. I know the pressure to keep as close as possible to the webtoon but not all are necessary in real life especially so many movements about teacher-student relationship nowadays.

    Chingus! Ready for kiss bts???

  9. Why I keep thinking Kim Do Wan and Kang Hana purposely spam their instagram with all the MRIAG pictures? I think they purposely/planning to do that. For the first half of the drama, Hyeri and Ki Yong put a lot of picture of them together and now second half, Kim Do Wan and Kang Hana taking over and start putting the pictures of four of them or two of them together.

I guess they are chatting in the chat group and sharing picture what should they post today. I still remember they mentioned that they have chat group to keep it up with each other even they have finished their shooting.

    But I love it!!
