[PICK] Stars We Wish to See Again in Romance Movies

Love stories have become very rare recently. Romance is constantly seeking viewers on small screens, but the latest Korean films are mostly based on other genres. Indeed, some are them are in the production stage: Jeon Jong Seo and Son Seok Gu’s Romance Without Love (working title), Lee Dong Wook and Lim Su Jeong’s Single in Seoul, and Han Ji Min, Yoona, Kang Ha Neul’s Happy New Year. However, there are not many of them. Actors who have elicited various emotions in romance films in the past nowadays play characters with no love lines. Hoping to see the romantic side of the actors on the screen again, let’s relieve the disappointment with the movies introduced below.

Spoiler

Il Mare (2000)

EE549383-6475-4200-BF4D-0C061FA845A9.jpg

Credit: Sidus Pictures

Il Mare is a movie starring Lee Jung Jae and Jeon Ji Hyun, who rarely star in romance films nowadays. It depicts the story of a man and a woman living in a picturesque house called ‘Il Mare’ with a time difference of a year. They get to know each other’s existence by exchanging letters and slowly fall in love. Directed by Lee Hyun Seung, who received great attention for sophisticated color images with an urban sensibility in The Blue in You (1992) and Sunset into the Neon Lights (1995), it became the first Korean film to be remade in Hollywood (The Lake House, 2006). Unfortunately, it was relatively underrated at the time of its release compared to Ditto, which has a similar subject matter. Still, the affectionate love that unfolds in the beautiful footage and Kim Hyun Cheol’s “Must say goodbye” leave a long-lasting impression.

The Classic (2003)

D2A16256-88C3-41EB-A82C-B5582605DD57.jpg

The movie is based on Hwang Soon Won’s novel, Showers. My Sassy Girl director Kwak Jae Yong introduced the lead actors Son Ye Jin and Cho Seung Woo to the public. In it, Son Ye Jin played two roles in this movie and emerged as a star with clean and pure beauty. The story begins when a daughter accidentally finds her mother’s love letters from when she was young. Although it is somewhat sentimental, the meticulous setting that stimulates nostalgic feelings and the familiar melody of the music harmonize all together. Also, it is a rare work where you can see the heartbreaking performance of Cho Seung Woo, who has become a great actor.

Maundy Thursday (2006)

It is an adaptation of Gong Ji Young’s novel of the same title. The combination of Kang Dong Won and Lee Na Young attracted great attention. Director Song Hae Seong said, “If you look closely at the two actors, there is a subtle sadness. Just as Yoo Jung and Yun Su share similar wounds, the lead actors also resemble each other.” The movie tells the story of a man who faces the death penalty for a murder charge but desperately wants to live and a woman who has no attachment to life enough to attempt to commit suicide three times. Together, they miraculously share each other’s feelings. Despite having such different backgrounds and perspectives, the movie depicts the moment they bring out their painful wounds, loneliness, and despair to each other. Soon, they truly begin to connect, give comfort, and thus, love and understand each other. Although its subject is rather heavy, the harmony of plainspoken directing and the actors’ soul-stirring performances were impressive.

A Season of Good Rain (2009)

Credit: Next Entertainment World

Many would consider A Moment to Remember (2004) as Jung Woo Sung’s best romance film in which he starred with Son Ye Jin. But I think his hidden masterpiece is A Season of Good Rain. Made by Christmas in August (1998) and One Fine Spring Day (2001) director Hur Jin Ho, A Season of Good Rain is a movie that brings excitement out of its beauty of simplicity. It follows a man and a woman who were attracted to each other while studying abroad in the US but could not open their hearts. After a long time, they run into each other in China and fall in love again. The chemistry between Jung Woo Sung and Gao Yuanyuan is good, and the whole movie is full of pleasantly refreshing feelings. The film has the lightest mood among director Hur Jin Ho’s other romance films.

Finding Mr. Destiny (2010)

2E424C05-50EF-4B49-BBF4-2ED050E9D72A.jpg

Credit: CJ Entertainment

Based on the musical of the same title, Finding Mr. Destiny is a film that focuses more on the actors, especially Gong Yoo, rather than the plot. It depicts the twists and turns of romance between Ji Woo, a girl who goes out to find her first love pushed by her father, and Ki Joon, who opened a search agency for his first love after being laid off because of his savvy personality. Although there were generic discrepancies caused by adapting a musical into a movie, Gong Yoo’s hot features made us overcome boredom, cringes, and cliches. He even looked dashing with the horrendous 2 to 8 side hair part. His collaboration with Lim Soo Jung is also lovely. At the end of the movie, you can listen to the song Gong Yoo sang himself. It is with a light melody that starts with the lyrics, “The moment we first met, I was quite scared of you.”

Late Autumn (2010)

Credit: CJ Entertainment

This movie drew a lot of attention as Hyun Bin, who gained huge popularity with Secret Garden, and Tang Wei of Lust and Caution co-starred. It is a remake of Lee Man Hee’s 1966 film of the same title. It depicts an unforgettable love between a female prisoner who takes a three-day vacation and a man who is on a run. Their love story in strange places lacks big dramatic events, but the sad and lonely emotions left by a short encounter followed by a long separation leave a lingering impression. The foggy and inclement weather in Seattle also doubles the loneliness of the film.

On August 26th, according to film industry insiders, Kang Dong Won has confirmed to appear in Accident (working title) and is currently discussing the details.

Kang’s new film will be a Korean remake of the Hong Kong film Accident (2009). The story of this remake movie follows a hitman, Brain, who survives an accident during an operation. After the unfortunate event, he struggles to find the traitor who caused the incident in the midst of doubts and questions. This new Korean version will follow the basic storyline of the original work with a little bit of tweak to suit the Korean audience’s taste.

Kang Dong Won will play the character Brain, which Hong Kong actor Koo Tin Lok (Louis Koo) has played in the original film.

The Queen of Crime (2016) director Lee Yo Seop will exec produce, and Voice Of A Murder, Jeon Woo Chi, and Default production company ZIP CINEMA will present the movie.

The film is currently recruiting more leading and supporting actors. Meanwhile, Kang Dong Won just completed shooting the film Broker.

Korean Internet Giant Kakao to Buy Prestige Film Producer Zip Cinema

By Patrick Frater | September 16, 2021

spacer.png
Zip Cinema

Kakao Entertainment, part of South Korean internet giant Kakao Corp., is poised to buy leading Korean film production company Zip Cinema from its Singaporean owner Spackman Entertainment. The deal is valued at S$19.8 million ($14.8 million).

Zip Cinema is producer of “Broker,” the Korean-language debut of Japanese Palme d’or winner Kore-eda Hirokazu (“Shoplifters”), which is now in post-production and being sold by CJ Entertainment. The film stars Song Kang-ho (“Parasite,” “Snowpiercer,” “Memories of Murder”), Gang Dong-won (“Peninsula”) and Bae Doona (“The Host,” “Cloud Atlas” and Netflix series “Kingdom”).

The company previously produced hit films including 2014’s “My Brilliant Life,” 2015’s “The Priests” and 2018’s “Golden Slumber.” It was also a minority investor in Bong Joon-ho’s original “Snowpiercer” film from 2013.

Spoiler

Spackman, which is listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange, revealed in July that it had received an approach for Zip Cinema from an unidentified bidder. Spackman says that the disposal to Kakao Entertainment will transform its finances as the sale proceeds are nearly three times Spackman’s S$7.6 million ($5.67 million) market capitalization. Spackman shares soared by as much as 50% following the deal announcement.

The deal is puny compared with the KRW55 trillion ($46.9 billion) valuation of Kakao Entertainment’s parent company Kakao Corp., but it is nevertheless seen as synergistic. “KEC already has diverse video production capacities, and the planned acquisition of Zip Cinema is expected to add to and synergize with this existing value chain,” a Kakao Entertainment spokesman told Variety.

Kakao Entertainment came into being in January this year when Kakao Page, known for its webtoons, and Kakao M (film and TV production, talent management and record labels) were merged. It was further expanded from the beginning of this month when the Melon music streaming unit was also folded in.

Spackman has assembled a collection of Korean assets and Korean-themed businesses. In 2014, it acquired producers Korea Take in 2017 and Simplex in 2019. It says it will continue to invest in Korean films and diversify into Hollywood.

“Other than producing and investing in Korean films directly, the company will also tap on its subsidiaries, including Take Pictures, Simplex Films, Greenlight Content and Novus Mediacorp to produce and invest in Korean films,” Spackman said in a regulatory filing.

“Against the backdrop of uncertainty of the entertainment sector brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in relation to the theatrical film industry, the proposed disposal will provide the Group with working capital for business diversification and to expand into other businesses, in particular, co-producing and financing U.S. films which are potentially more profitable than Korean films due to a wider international audience base. The group’s pipeline of U.S. Hollywood projects include four potential new films, which will be announced once definitive agreements have been signed for these projects, as and when necessary.”

Korean Star Gang Dong-won Signs With CAA (EXCLUSIVE)

By Patrick Frater | Mar 23, 2022

Superstar Korean actor and producer Gang Dong-won has signed up with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) for representation outside Korea.

Gang joins a string of Korean on-screen talent securing international representation as the country’s creative sector is propelled to the fore by films such as “Parasite” and “Peninsula” and by TV shows such as “Squid Game.”

He continues to be represented in Korea and Japan by Lee Gi Wook at YG Entertainment.

Gang, who has a mechanical engineering degree and was initially scouted as a model, transitioned to acting in 2004 with “Too Beautiful to Lie” and “Temptation of Wolves,” the latter of which earned him the best new actor award at the 24th Korean Association Critics Choice Awards.

Since then, he has had a string of hugely successful roles in hit films including crime tales “A Violent Prosecutor” and “Master,” as well as fantasy “Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard” and 2014 period actioner “Kundo: Age of the Rampant.”

Gang’s most recent big screen role was as the lead in hit “Peninsula,” a standalone film following on from breakout zombie horror “Train to Busan.”

He will next be seen in “Broker,” a drama film that marks the Korean-language debut of “Shoplifters” director Kore-eda Hirokazu. Produced by CJ Entertainment, the film has been submitted for consideration at this year’s Cannes film festival.

Gang is a fluent English speaker and in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, he is understood to have filmed scenes for “Tsunami LA,” a disaster movie backed by Hannibal Media and directed by Scott Mann. If completed, the film would mark Gang’s Hollywood debut.

Other high-profile Korean artists signed by CAA include Hoyeon (aka Jung Ho-yeon) the breakout female star of “Squid Game” and the show’s lead Lee Jung-jae. The agency has also taken on representation of Lee Myoungwoo, showrunner of K-drama series “The Fiery Priest.”

We were teasing #gangdongwon on being the Brad Pitt of Korea and then he did confess he was the first Korean actor to mint an NFT. So I shouted, “You’re the Elon Musk of Korea!” And the waiter quietly said, “Actually, sir, Mr. Musk is seated behind you,” and that’s when I died. The End.

Oh, also, @jungeunchae_ stars in #Pachinko, based on one of my favorite books by Min Jin Lee, and a new Apple TV series that premieres this weekend. Easily one of the most beautiful television shows I’ve seen and does a masterful job of painting Korean and Japanese history. We were at dinner to celebrate with Executive Producer @theresa_kang_715 . It’s crazy to see how much Korean entertainment permeates global culture now. We’ve always had so much to say and the world is listening!

Hirokazu Koreeda’s New Movie ‘Broker’ Confirms June Release

by krishkim

Hirokazu Koreeda’s Broker (literal title) has confirmed its June release.

Broker follows the unexpected and special journey of those intertwined over a baby box. The released teaser poster captures the conflicting moments of those on a trip centering around a baby under a clear sky.

Sang Hyun (Song Kang Ho), who calls himself a broker of goodwill that finds new parents for a baby left in a baby box, is smiling brightly with his partner Dong Soo (Kang Dong Won). The two actors’ reunion 12 years after the movie Secret Reunion draws attention.

However, behind them is the baby’s mother So Young (IU), who unexpectedly joins the journey. Unlike Sang Hyun and Dong Soo, she’s staring out the window with a stern face. The phrase “Baby box, a special deal begins there,” amplifies curiosity.

The movie made headlines as the first Korean movie directed by the world-renowned Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda.

Since the production stage, the A-list cast lineup has been a hot topic. Besides Song Kang Ho, Kang Dong Won, and IU, Bae Doo Na and Lee Joo Young each play detective Soo Jin, who chases after the brokers, and Soo Jin’s partner Detective Lee.

'The Broker' directed by Koreeda, confirmed for release in June... “Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, IU, teaser poster”

Apr 11, 2022 GMT

‘The Broker,’ the first Korean film directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, is ready to meet the audience. It has been confirmed for release in June.

‘The Broker’ side released a teaser poster on the 11th with the news of the release date. It contains the main characters who have an unexpected journey with a single child.  A warm chemistry was foretold. Song Kang-ho (Sang-hyeon) and his partner Gang Dong-won (Dong-soo) were looking at each other and smiling brightly. It created a warm atmosphere.  IU (So-young) looked out the window with an unknown face. The copy of “Baby Box, the deal that started there” raised curiosity about their special story.

'The Broker' is a film about people who have a relationship over a 'baby box' that is designed to allow people who cannot raise children to leave their babies anonymously.  It attracts attention with its colorful lineup. The cast includes Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, Bae Doona, IU, and Lee Joo-young. The new faces and synergies they will show raise curiosity to the highest level.

Song Kang-ho takes on the role of Sang-hyeon, a self-proclaimed good-willed broker who tries to find the right person to raise a baby. Gang Dong-won takes on the role of Sang-hyeon's partner, Dong-soo. Bae Doo-na plays the role of 'Su-jin', a detective who relentlessly pursues a broker's journey.  IU took on the role of a mother, So-Young. It is unknown why she left the baby in the baby box or why she returned. Lee Joo-young will appear as ‘Detective Lee’, a junior who pursues a broker with ‘Su-jin’.

Meanwhile, 'The Broker' is a work that Hirokazu had conceived about five years ago. It is his first Korean film directing, and he has been preparing for a long time with a domestic production team.

As Korean films and dramas grow in worldwide prominence, English-speaking Korean actors are building parallel careers in Hollywood, as it becomes more common for foreign filmmakers to choose to work with them.

Most recently, actors Yoo Yeon-seok and Ye Ji-won starred in French filmmaker Denis Dercourt's mystery thriller "Vanishing," which was set in Korea.

When asked why he took the role, Yoo said, "I was always curious to know what differences there are between local and foreign film productions. I thought speaking English would bring out something different, and it did. I would happily do a film in other languages again."

Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda's drama film "Broker" which will hit theaters in June, features high-profile Korean actors Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, Bae Doo-na and IU. Produced by CJ Entertainment, the film has been submitted for consideration at this year's Cannes film festival.

Gang recently signed with CAA and is poised to make a Hollywood debut with Scott Mann's disaster movie "Tsunami LA." Bae already has a number of Hollywood projects under her belt, including "Cloud Atlas" (2012), "Jupiter Ascending" (2015) and the TV series "Sense8."

Another Japanese director, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, whose film "Drive My Car" won this year's Oscar for Best International Feature Film, has collaborated frequently with Korean actors. "Drive My Car" featured three Korean actors ― Park Yu-rim, Jin Dae-yeon and Ahn Hwi-tae.

His "Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy," which will hit local theaters in June, will also star Korean actor Hyunri. The prominent director, who has scooped multiple honors including Golden Globes and BAFTAs, said he noticed that Korean film is prospering and its influence is getting stronger.

Jung Ho-yeon, the star of Netflix's megahit series "Squid Game," announced recently that she signed with CAA and joined the cast of the Hollywood film "The Governesses," alongside Lily-Ross Depp and Cate Blanchett. Actress Jun Jong-seo starred earlier in "Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon" (2020) after signing with UTA.

This trend is led by the success of "Minari" (2021), starring Youn Yuh-jung and Han Ye-ri. It established a universal cinema language and paved the way for the ambitious non-English-speaking TV series "Pachinko," featuring Youn, Lee Min-ho and Kim Min-ha.

In addition, Korean directors are making inroads into Hollywood films. Filmmaker Kim Jee-woon is set to make the four-part TV series "Klaus 47," while Im Sang-soo will make his Hollywood feature debut with "Soho Sins."

Cannes Film Festival Predictions Include ‘Lightyear,’ New Films By David Lynch, David Cronenberg (EXCLUSIVE)

After shining a spotlight on rising Japanese helmer Ryûsuke Hamaguchi with “Drive My Car” (which just won an Oscar) last year, Cannes should have a pair of revered Japanese helmers in the lineup: Koji Fukada with “Love Life” and Palme d’Or winning director Hirokazu Kore-eda with “Broker.” South Korean helmer Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” (pictured) is also in the starting blocks for the competition.

Broker
Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda
Stars: Song Kang-ho (“Parasite”), Bae Doona (“Cloud Atlas,” “The Host”), Gang Dong-won (“Peninsula,” “The Priests”).

Kore-eda, who was last at Cannes in 2018 with his Palme d’Or-winning “Shoplifters,” is expected to return with his Korean-language debut, “Baby, Box, Broker.” The film follows a group of individuals who cross paths in a world where boxes are left out for people to anonymously drop off their unwanted babies.
