Actor Kang Dong Won delivered good news after ending his 7-year journey with YG Entertainment.

According to a report by OSEN on January 19th, Kang Dong Won plans to establish a one-man agency instead of looking for a new management agency after his exclusive contract with YG recently expired.

An official in the entertainment industry said to the media, “Kang Dong Won is preparing to establish his own company”, adding “Although the actor wants to help artists who have the same direction, he plans to focus on his career first”.

In addition, Kang Dong Won is also aiming to set up a production company to develop scenarios and produce acting projects together with his one-man agency. At this production company, Kang Dong Won will be mainly in charge of producing instead of directing.

Kang Dong Won had previously been an actor under YG Entertainment for a long time. He signed with YG in 2016 and renewed his contract in 2019 and 2021. After seven years, Kang Dong Won decided to end his exclusive contract on the 30th of last month and make a new move.

Kang Dong Won starred in the movie “Broker” last year and is currently working on the “Possessed (working title)” and “The Accident”. On January 18th, he was reported to be reviewing the casting offer for Park Chan Wook’s new Netflix film “Jeon, Ran”.

IMG_2893.jpg

Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won may be uniting for a new drama!

On March 28, an industry representative reported that the two stars will be starring in the new drama “Polaris” (working title).

In response to the report, a source from Jun Ji Hyun’s agency IEUM HASHTAG commented, “Jun Ji Hyun was offered a role in the drama ‘Polaris’ and is positively reviewing [the offer].” A representative of Kang Dong Won also responded, “It is one of several projects he has been offered.”

“Polaris” is a new spy romance drama and tells the stories of spies who work to find their true selves. The drama will be created by screenwriter Jung Seo Kyung and director Kim Hee Won, who previously worked together on “Little Women.” Jung Seo Kyung has also worked on hits including “The Handmaiden,” “Mother,” and “Decision to Leave,” while Kim Hee Won has led productions such as “The Crowned Clown,” “Crash Landing on You,” “Vincenzo,” and more.

As Kang Dong Won has mostly appeared in films, this will be his fourth drama ever and his first drama in nearly 20 years since “Magic” in 2004 if he accepts the offer. Jun Ji Hyun has starred in dramas more frequently, receiving love for her roles in “My Love From the Star,” “The Legend of the Blue Sea,” “Jirisan,” and more.

“Polaris” is set to begin filming once casting is complete.

“The best combination ever”…Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won reportedly meet in a spy melodrama

By dhan | March 28, 2023

Actors Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won are expected to meet in one work.

On March 28th, Sports Chosun reported the interview with an entertainment official saying, “Jun Ji Hyun  and Kang Dong Won are expected to meet in the new drama ‘Polaris (working title)’. They are likely to appear.”

“Polaris” is written by Jung Seo Kyung, who wrote scripts such as the movie “Decision to Leave” and tvN’s “Little Women”. It is known that director Kim Hee Won of tvN’s “Vincenzo” is in charge of directing.  Writer Jung Seo Kyung and director Kim Hee Won already worked together through tvN’s “Little Women” last year, raising expectations.

“Polaris” is a spy melodrama that tells the story of spies who work to find their true selves.  Everyone cheered when news spread that Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won are likely to appear in this work.   This is because top actors gathered in one place.

Jun Ji Hyun has solidified her position by appearing in big dramas such as SBS’ “My Love from the Star”, “The Legend of the Blue Sea” and Netflix’s “Kingdom”.  She has also maintained the title “top actress” for decades by showing outstanding performances in films such as “The Thieves”, “The Berlin File” and “Assassination”.

On the other hand, Kang Dong Won presented great performances in movies “Kundo: Age of the Rampant”, “Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard” and “The Priests”, but he did not show his face on the small screen for a long time.  If Kang Dong Won appears in “Polaris”, he will meet viewers through TV for the first time in about 20 years since MBC’s “Something About 1%” and “Country Princess”, which aired in 2003.

Upon hearing the news, netizens expressed high expectations, “This is a combination that is bound to succeed” and “I can finally see this combination.”

Mother-in-law's reaction to Jun Ji-hyun filming "spy romance drama " with Gang Dong-won

By Una Lee (dipe) | 03/29/2023 07:11 ET

Actor Jun Ji-hyun is considering appearing in a drama for the first time in two years.  Although it is not in the final stage yet, it is said that it is conducting a positive review, raising expectations.

Gang Dong-won is mentioned as the opposite actor. Expectations are rising on the news that the two will meet in the spy romance drama.  Among them, designer Lee Jung-woo, well-known as Jun Ji-hyun's mother-in-law, posted a related post on social media.  After attaching a capture photo on Instagram story on the 29th, she said, "My favorite combination. Finally."

IMG_29139083a98a4c2e9c0f.jpg

Designer Lee has expressed her affection for her daughter-in-law Jun Ji-hyun several times. In 2021, she actively promoted Netflix's "Kingdom 3" starring Jun Ji-hyun.  Meanwhile, ‘Polaris(working title)’, in which Jun Ji-hyun and Gang Dong-won were offered to appear, is a new work by Chung Seo-kyung. It will be directed by Kim Hee-won.

[SBS Star] Jun Ji Hyun Says, "I Couldn't Focus with Gang Dong Won Around"; They Are in Talks for Drama Now

By Lee Narin  | 2023.03.31 16:58

IMG_2909.jpg

Thousands of K-drama fans are breathlessly anticipating the day they watch actress Jun Ji Hyun and actor Gang Dong Won's upcoming drama together.

A few days ago, it was reported that Jun Ji Hyun was confirmed to join a drama 'The North Star' (working title) as the lead.   Following the release of this report, Jun Ji Hyun's agency commented, "While it is true that Jun Ji Hyun was offered a role in 'The North Star', it is undecided whether she will star in the drama yet. We are still reviewing the offer with her. But it is quite likely that she will join it."

'The North Star' is a reunion between writer Jeong Seo-kyeong and director Kim Hee-won of last year's drama 'Little Women', and is an espionage melodrama depicting the story of spies, who are trying to recover their lost identity.

What was also revealed on this day was that Gang Dong Won was going to lead 'The North Star' alongside Jun Ji Hyun, which raised public expectation to an impossible pitch.  In the midst of all this hype, Jun Ji Hyun's past remark about Gang Dong Won's appearance became the talk of the Internet.

Previously in April 2016, when Jun Ji Hyun appeared on MBC's television show 'Section TV', she told some fun behind-the-scenes stories that occurred on site of her movie 'Assassination'.   During that time, Jun Ji-hyun indulged in reminiscence of the time when she was shooting the scene where she confronted a Japanese soldier.   She gave details of the moment, "When I was shooting that particular scene, I couldn't pay attention to my acting. It was because of Gang Dong Won.", she laughed and carried on, "It was an important scene. But with him around, I wasn't able to concentrate at all. He was pretty much the only thing on my mind then."

Later that year, Jun Ji Hyun once again expressed her immense love for Gang Dong Won; although it was as a character in a drama this time.  At the end of 2016, Jun Ji Hyun played in 'The Legend of the Blue Sea' with actor Lee Minho ('Heo Jun-jae') as 'Shim Chung'―the last mermaid on the planet who followed 'Heo Jun-jae' all the way to Seoul after spotting him in Spain and instantly falling in love with him.  In 'The Legend of the Blue Sea', Jun Ji Hyun was seen watching a 2015 movie 'The Priests', featuring Gang Dong Won, on a laptop next to Lee Minho.  When Gang Dong Won came out, Jun Ji Hyun went fanatical, and vigorously shook the laptop up and down to get Gang Dong Won out of the laptop.

Actor combinations who show “perfect chemistry” with their visuals alone

By dhan | March 31, 2023

New K-dramas this year draws huge attention as the combinations of actors, who were only seen in virtual casting have become reality.

Even before the dramas were released, viewers are paying attention to the combinations of actors who show “perfect chemistry” with their visuals alone. Netizens cheered with reactions such as “Is this casting for real?”, and “I’m happy to have more things to see”…

Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won, a combination that Jun Ji Hyun’s mother-in-law also expects?

IMG_2943.jpg

Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won  are expected to appear in the new work “Polaris (working title)” by writer Jung Seo Kyung, who wrote the movie “Decision to Leave” and tvN’s “Little Women”, and PD Kim Hee Won, who directed tvN’s “Vincenzo”. “Polaris” is a spy melodrama that tells the story of spies who work to find their true selves.

It is no exaggeration to say that the meeting between the two is the hottest news in the drama industry recently. Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won, who have been active separately, have never worked together in one work yet. In addition, since this is Kang Dong Won’s first appearance in a drama, 20 years after the 2004 series “Magic”, audiences cannot help but pay keen interest.

Jun Ji Hyun’s mother-in-law, designer Lee Jung Woo, also welcomed the news of this casting lineup. In particular, designer Lee Jung Woo recently shared on Instagram a screenshot of a media article titled “The birth of the greatest combination, Jun Ji Hyun X Kang Dong Won, meet in a spy melodrama”. Designer Lee Jung Woo also attached a sticker of a child gasping and could not control her joy by writing the caption “My favorite combination! Finally”.

YG Entertainment has denied the dating rumors surrounding Rosé of Blackpink and actor Gang Dong-won in a statement on Monday.

"We previously said that we are unable to check our artists' private matters, especially regarding Rosé, but we are making a statement again as rumors have continued to recklessly swirl," the agency said. "Rosé's dating rumor that has been reported today is not true."

A plethora of posts on online community sites have been claiming that Rosé and Gang are dating, based on the pair having been seen wearing matching accessories or outfits and that they were seen together at numerous events.

YG Entertainment initially refused to comment on the issue, and as the agency is notoriously known for refusing to confirm its artists' dating rumors, fans initially interpreted YG's evasive speech as an indirect way of confirming the relationship.

YG Entertainment mum on Rosé, Gang Dong-won dating rumors

YG Entertainment refused to respond to recent rumors that Rosé of Blackpink and actor Gang Dong-won are dating.

“There’s nothing we can comment on because it is our artist’s privacy,” the agency told local press on Monday.

A plethora of posts on online community sites have been claiming that Rosé and Gang are dating, based on the pair having been seen wearing matching accessories or outfits and that they were seen together at a private fashion event.

Some online users claimed to have seen the pair at an art fair last year.

Over the years, YG Entertainment has shown a certain pattern when responding to its artists' dating rumors.

Last year, when gossip got around that Blackpink's Jennie and BTS's V were in a relationship, YG did not comment on the issue. Instead, the agency said it would file a lawsuit against those who had leaked photos of the two together.

The same went for Big Bang's G-Dragon and Japanese model Kiko Mizuhara's rumored romance in 2015 — YG kept its mouth shut, saying that it "knew nothing" about its "artists' privacy."

It was likewise for AKMU's Lee Chan-hyuk and fromis_9's Lee Sae-rom last year.

But in instances when the rumor was false, YG has been resolute in denying them.

These cases count for Blackpink's Jisoo and football star Son Heung-min in 2021, Jennie and producer Teddy in 2017 and 2NE1's CL and Winner's Mino in 2015.

Fans have been interpreting YG's evasive speech as an indirect way of basically confirming the relationship.

Gang was signed under YG Entertainment until last December, and has since established a one-man agency. Blackpink's contract with YG expires this summer.

Acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook has set up his first project with Netflix. The director of Old Boy and last year’s stunning romantic noir Decision to Leave will co-write and produce the period thriller War and Revolt, set during Korea’s Joseon dynasty.

The film will be directed by Kim Sang-man, known for his well-received 2010 action thriller Midnight FM. Kim also is an accomplished art director, having done production work on Park’s landmark action drama Joint Security Area (2000) and I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK (2006).

War and Revolt is described as being set against the chaos of war, taking viewers on a gripping journey through the lives of two childhood friends turned adversaries.

A-list Korean actor Gang Dong-won (Broker, Peninsula) co-stars as the enigmatic Cheon-young, a character whose remarkable martial prowess defies his humble origins as a slave. Opposite Gang, Park Jeong-min (Deliver Us from Evil, Bleak Night) assumes the role of Jong-ryeo, Cheon-young’s former master and scion of Joseon’s most influential military family. After passing the military service exam, Jong-ryeo becomes King Seonjo’s personal guard, leading to a heart-wrenching reunion with his former friend.

The film marks the first time Gang and Park have shared the screen together. Describing the two performances, Netflix says: “Struggling to break free from the chains of servitude, Cheon-young will be brought to life by Gang’s extraordinary talent, exuding charm and delivering breathtaking action sequences that will leave audiences in awe… Park’s portrayal is expected to be nothing short of mesmerizing, as he delves deep into the complex psyche of a man torn between friendship and duty, ultimately facing his own downfall.”

Rounding out the cast, Cha Seung-won (Blood Rain, TV series Our Blues) will play the role of King Seonjo, a monarch who abandons his people at the onset of the Japanese invasion, only to seek redemption by restoring his royal authority after the war. Kim Shin-rock (Hellbound) portrays the resolute Bumdong, a member of the civilian militia who fearlessly defies social norms and confronts any obstacles that cross her path. Jin Seon-kyu (Extreme Job) takes on the role of Kim Ja-ryeong, a civilian militia leader descended from the traditional ruling class who emerges as an inspiring force amid the chaos of the invasion. And Jung Sung-ill (The Glory) brings the intimidating Japanese warlord Genshin to life, a character who recognizes Cheon-young’s extraordinary swordsmanship.

War and Revolt is produced by Moho Film — the powerhouse Korean label behind Park’s Decision to Leave and The Handmaiden, as well as Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer — in collaboration with Semicolon Studio.

Park’s next project as a director is the HBO miniseries The Sympathizer, starring Robert Downey Jr. in multiple roles.

South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook is to produce and co-write period thriller War And Revolt, marking his first collaboration with streaming giant Netflix.

The director of Oldboy and last year’s Cannes award-winner Decision To Leave has co-written the script with Shin Chul.

Set more than 400 years ago during Korea’s Joseon dynasty, the film will be directed by Kim Sang-man, known for 2010 action-thriller Midnight FM.

It will be produced by Park’s own Moho Film – the Seoul-based production company behind Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden and Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer – in collaboration with Semicolon Studio.

Set against a backdrop of war, the story follows two childhood friends turned adversaries. It will star Gang Dong-won of Broker and Peninsula alongside Park Jeong-min, known for Deliver Us From Evil and Decision To Leave, marking the first time the two leading actors have shared the screen.

Gang will play Cheon-young, a character whose martial prowess defies his humble origins as a slave. Park stars as Jong-ryeo, Cheon-young’s former master and a descendant of Joseon’s most influential military family. After passing the military service exam, Jong-ryeo becomes the personal guard to the king, leading to a reunion with his former friend.

The top cast also includes Cha Seung-won as King Seonjo, a monarch who abandons his people at the onset of the Japanese invasion, only to seek redemption by restoring his royal authority after the war; Kim Shin-rock, known for her performance in Hellbound; Jin Seon-kyu; and Jung Sung-ill of Netflix series The Glory.

Park Chan-wook’s next project as a director is HBO miniseries The Sympathizer, starring Robert Downey Jr in multiple roles.

Netflix remains the market leader in Korea and has helped foster the international popularity of films and series from the country through partnerships with the local content industry on titles such as Squid Game – the streamer’s most popular series of all time with more than 1.6 billion hours watched.

In April, the streamer committed to invest $2.5bn in South Korea over the next four years including films, series and unscripted shows. That is twice the total amount Netflix has invested in the country since launching its service in Korea in 2016.

At the end of last year, Netflix revealed that 60% of its global subscribers watched K-content in 2022.

After passing the military service exam, Jong-ryeo becomes King Seonjo’s personal guard, leading to a heart-wrenching reunion with his former friend. The role requires delving into the complex psyche of a man torn between friendship and duty.

Other key roles go to Cha Seung-won, Kim Shin-rock, Jin Sun-kyu and Jung Sung-ill.

Netflix gave free rein to Bong as one of Korea’s leading filmmakers to make creature feature “Okja” in 2017. The move was a major signal to other creators in Korea and kicked off an era of intense film and TV production, and content exports from Korea. Netflix recently committed to spending a further $2.5 billion on Korean content.

Three domestic films are set to hit local theaters next month to attract film buffs ahead of Chuseok, Korea's autumn thanksgiving holiday. It is an important period for Korea's film industry as it is one of the country's longer holidays along with the Lunar New Year holiday, which fall in January or February.

This year, Chuseok will be a four-day extended holiday over the weekend, running from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1.

With the arrival of highly anticipated films like "Cobweb", "Road to Boston" and "Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman," all boasting substantial budgets and needing significant ticket sales to break even, the box office will likely witness tough competition.

"Cobweb," directed by Kim Jee-woon, has set off a wave of excitement among moviegoers ahead of the film's scheduled release in September.

The film was screened at the Out of Competition section of the 76th Cannes Film Festival and received a whopping 12-minute standing ovation.

The film starring Song Kang-ho, Im Soo-jung and Jeon Yeo-been, focuses on the life of a filmmaker from the 1970s who is obsessed with creating a masterpiece and struggles to shoot the film with actors who have a reputation for being difficult to work with amid cultural censorship.

"Road to Boston," starring Ha Jung-woo and Im Si-wan, is about Korean marathon runners who participated in Boston Marathon in 1947 after Korea had been liberated from Japan in 1945. It was inspired by the true story of Suh Yun-bok, who won the 1947 Boston Marathon with a world record time.

Directed by Kang Je-gyu, best known for "Swiri" (1999) and "TaeGukGi: Brotherhood of War" (2004), the film was originally scheduled to be released in 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman," fronted by actor Gang Dong-won, will also hit local theaters in September.

The mystery thriller revolves around a fake exorcist who ends up facing a real case of demonic possession. He travels around the country with his assistant to perform fake exorcisms until they get involved in a case of a girl possessed by an evil spirit and are faced with the challenge of saving her.

Korea's box office reached around 70 percent of pre-pandemic levels in the first half of 2023, according to data released by the Korean Film Council.

The total box-office revenue for the first six months of the year period was 606.7 billion won ($474.5 million), the equivalent of 72.5 percent of the same period in 2019. Compared to the first half of 2022, ticket sales have decreased by 5.9 percent. Admissions rose 29.9 percent to hit 58.39 million.
