‘Doctor Slump’ Park Hyung-sik and Park Shin-hye “There is no reason bigger than you!” [Kim Jae-dong’s Trees and Forests]

[OSEN=Guest Reporter Kim Jae-dong]

How many people can live like a star while working as a doctor? Plastic surgeon Yeo Jeong-woo (played by Park Hyeong-sik) in the JTBC Saturday-Sunday drama 'Dr. Slump' lived such a life.

A chance appearance in the ‘Overseas Medical Volunteer Documentary’ became the opportunity. The world went crazy when she was shown on screen, talented, good-looking, and full of positive energy.

Good brains + good looks + good personality are the cliches that cartoons like as their main characters. In a word, Yeo Yeong-woo's life could only be a succession of victories. But someone put an end to the journey, and Yeo Yeong-woo's life was shattered.

Table death of a Macau casino heiress who received facial contouring surgery. It was only then that I realized. Amidst the cheers of the world, there is hidden envy and jealousy. Star doctor's medical accident. The public was enthusiastic not only about the star's success but also his downfall. It was only then that I realized. There is no need to worry about betraying the world as you live. Because the world is likely to betray you first.

The 10 billion won damages lawsuit that followed the criminal lawsuit for occupational manslaughter was also dizzying. Even after selling her house, selling her car, and selling her hospital, she steadily maintained several billion in debt. She became rich in debt, and when she came to find her flowing, I met her at her rooftop. Nam Ha-neul (played by Park Shin-hye).

20240225120843758ujpw.png

'Ha~Neul Life!' Even after being diagnosed with depression, I tried to persevere. But this guy’s abuse of power by professors has no end. He gave it a whiff and resigned. He realized it right away. Exhilaration is fleeting and life is real.

The life of a voluntary unemployed person was not sweet at all. Nam Haneul has never played in his life. I have never wasted time in my life. My life was just studying, my specialty was studying, and my hobbies were just studying. I can go anywhere, but there is no place I want to go or anywhere I need to go. You can do anything, but there is nothing you want to do or have to do. As I was trying to get some fresh air, I met him on the rooftop. Why are you?

The world is full of noise, so unless you close your eyes and block your ears, you can't be unaware of Yeo Yeong-woo's situation. However, in the southern sky, I was so fired up that I had no time to feel sorry or complain. But it's here? In the rooftop room of my house?

Fortunately, this unpleasant encounter became another door that life opened after closing one door. It was comforting to know that I wasn't the only one living at the lowest point in life, and the fact that we could sympathize with each other on our own issues gave us motivation to move forward. Sarcasm, anger, and sometimes shedding tears while hugging each other served as a healing act of licking each other's scratches, which developed into love, and Yeo Jeong-woo and Nam Ha-neul gained the courage to jump back into life.

Yeo Yeong-woo won the trial. The death of the Macau casino heiress was revealed to be a conspiracy due to an inheritance fight, and Yeo Jeong-woo was able to pick up the scalpel again by responding to the scouting of Bin Dae-young (played by Yoon Park).

However, the problem of the southern sky has not yet been resolved. Nam Ha-neul, who had vowed never to trust anyone again due to Min Kyung-min, her senior who stabbed her in the back, couldn't shake off her anxiety and fear, even though she liked Yeo Jeong-woo so much that she couldn't bear it. He was worried that Yeo Yeong-woo would become his pain again someday, and he doubted whether such an unstable person could be happy with Yeo Yeong-woo. And he concludes that it is better to give up a relationship that is becoming difficult and bids farewell to Yeo Jeong-woo.

20240225120844263wgzt.png

The device prepared to restore the relationship between these two people is Yeo Jeong-woo's post-traumatic stress disorder. Yeo Jeong-woo, who picks up the scalpel again, fails in the surgery. This is because he could not overcome the trauma of bloodshed caused by the shock of losing the patient.

Nam Ha-neul hears about Yeo Yeong-woo's condition from Lee Hong-ran (Gong Seong-ha). She returns to her original position, but she realizes that she can still help Yeo-jeong-woo.

Yeo Yeong-woo enters the operating room again a day before his death. He asks, frowning at the burning headache. “Director of the Anesthesiology Department, nothing bad happened during the induction, right?” “Yes, it was okay. “Blood pressure and pulse are all normal,” comes the reply. But this voice? As Yeo Jeong-woo looks back, the clear eyes of Nam Ha-neul, who is wearing a mask, appear. And Nam Haneul’s voice filled with encouragement. “Sir, I think you can start.”

There are few times in life when there is a sufficient reason. For some people, just trying it once can be a good idea. In the trailer, Yeo Jeong-woo says: “If I need a reason to overcome trauma, there is no bigger reason than you!” If both parties can become reasons for each other, it seems correct to say that the green light has been turned on. When it comes to love, what’s important isn’t the ending.

6 Scenes From "Doctor Slump" That Made Us Feel Vulnerable And Soft

"Doctor Slump" has slowly mesmerized the K-Drama community with its gripping storyline and relatable characters. Featuring Park ShinHye and Park HyungSik as its main leads, the series is a mixture of comedic gold, heart-fluttering romance, and much needed healing.

"Doctor Slump" revolves around Yeo JeongWoo (Park HyungSik) and Nam HaNeul (Park ShinHye). Both were top students at school and were each other's academic rivals. They reunite during one of the lowest points of their lives. Although they continue to bicker, they become each other's pillar of support and romance blossoms between the two.

Even prior to reaching its midway point, the drama was already filled with countless moments that tugged on your heartstrings. It provided a number of different quotes and scenarios that hit all the right spots. It's a drama that makes you contemplate life and reassess whether or not you're truly happy. The series takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions that soften your heart from beginning to end.

Now, let's take a look at a few scenes from "Doctor Slump" that made us feel vulnerable and soft.

Note: this article contains spoilers.

1. First Crying Session Together

When Yeo JeongWoo and Nam HaNeul first meet, they still maintain their rival-like relationship. They childishly bicker with one another, but after a sequence of disheartening events, they find themselves drinking together. As they're drunkenly making their way home, they allow their weakness to show and end up crying in each other's arms.

Although the start is silly and a bit comedic, you come to understand their realization that they've reached their lowest point. This awareness is both a moment of relatable pain and healing for viewers across the globe.

2. HaNeul Lives Out Her High School Dreams

While Nam HaNeul was academically gifted, she had to make huge sacrifices. She spent all of her high school career studying to ensure that she would be able to make it into a top university. However, upon reuniting with JeongWoo, she was able to experience the joys of a typical high school student for the first time.

There comes a moment where time slows down and suddenly, both Kim HaNeul and Yeo JeongWoo are seen wearing their high school uniforms. It's a scene that strikes at audiences' hearts everywhere. Even when they're struggling the most, our two main characters are able to smile and have fun, tapping into the joy of their high school innocence.

3. Yeo JeongWoo Lets Kim HaNeul Sleep

Reaching rock bottom, both Yeo JeongWoo and Kim HaNeul are understandably tired and barely have the strength to continue moving forward. However, they try their best to become pillars of support and aid each other to remain afloat. One way that JeongWoo does this is to allow HaNeul to sleep.

Not just once, but on two occasions he notices her exhaustion and let's her rest. It produces both butterflies and comfort, putting audiences in a state of tenderhearted admiration in light of JeongWoo's caring actions. It makes you hope that when you're going through a tough time, you can find someone as supportive and kind-hearted as Yeo JeongWoo.

4. A Hug Of Reassurance

When words fail, actions speak. This has become a constant theme all throughout "Doctor Slump" and is not only portrayed by one person. After realizing just how much pain JeongWoo has kept hidden in his heart, HaNeul offers him a hug of reassurance.

She sincerely acknowledges his difficult situation but also reminds him that everything will be okay. Although simple, it's an act that everyone wants at least once in their life. It reaffirms the fact that a bit of reassurance with a hug goes a long way.

5. A Kidney Bean That Won't Grow

Many people would agree that seeing a crying child would make them feel soft and vulnerable in an instant. This is certainly the case the moment we meet the younger version of Yeo JeongWoo. As fate would have it, out of the entire class JeongWoo's kidney bean happened to be the only one that did not grow.

Although he appeared strong in front of his classmates, when walking alone he burst out into tears. Seeing a child in such a emotional state would make anyone feel soft and vulnerable, hoping to find some way to take their pain away.

6. One Way To Combat PTSD

Despite his name being cleared, Yeo JeongWoo still suffers from PTSD. His first day back in the operating room, he is unable to complete a procedure that he has probably done a hundred times before. After learning about this incident, Nam HaNeul does not hesitate to aid him in bettering his condition.

Much to his surprise, JeongWoo finds HaNeul assisting him in the operating room. Although taken aback, her very presence acts as a much needed calming pill, allowing him to be able to complete the procedure with apparent ease. Seeing how his demeanor completely changes would make anyone swoon in an instant, all while wearing a huge smile on their face.

Have you been enjoying "Doctor Slump" so far? What scene(s) have stuck out the most so far?

'Doctor Slump' hits new high in ratings as Hyungsik and Park Shin Hye rekindle romance

In 'Doctor Slump,' Park Hyungsik and Park Shin Hye reconfirm their feelings with a kiss, breaking their own record with a viewership rating of 9.8%.

In the 10th episode of the JTBC Saturday-Sunday drama 'Doctor Slump' (directed by Oh Hyun-jong, written by Baek Sun-woo, produced by SLL·Highzium Studio) broadcast on the 25th, the second romance between Jeong Woo (Park Hyungsik) and Nam Ha-neul (Park Shin Hye) began.

After a brief relationship and breakup, the two realized that being with each other was the only way to comfort and heal their 'heart's illness' that had not yet fully recovered. The two kisses that signaled the official reunion of the 'WooNeul couple' brought warm excitement. The audience's response was explosive.

1708916804-28.jpeg

The 10th episode's viewership rating reached a new personal best of 8.2% nationwide and 9.8% in the metropolitan area (according to Nielsen Korea, paid households), ranking first among all general programming and cable programs.

The viewership more than doubled compared to the first episode, which started at 4.0% nationwide and 4.8% in the metropolitan area. After a slight dip to the 3% range during the Lunar New Year holiday, the ratings have steadily climbed, catching a proper wind.

The sweet kiss between the two at the end of the broadcast raised viewers' heart rates, foreshadowing the romance that Jeong Woo and Nam Ha-neul will continue to write.

Especially, the words from Jeong Woo's mother, Gong Wol-sun (Jang Hye-jin), to Nam Ha-neul, suggesting that her encouragement might have felt like nagging or pushing, brought a significant realization to him. Feeling comforted by her words, "Let's rest a bit since we've fallen," he felt sorry for trying to force such a Jeong Woo back onto the operating table. Nam Ha-neul's narration, "Sometimes, quiet and calm consolation is needed more," resonated deeply with viewers.

JTBC's Saturday-Sunday drama 'Doctor Slump' airs every Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 PM.

Shut up, melodrama! The ‘Doctor Slump’ production team’s bold game-winning strategy in the second half

Choi Young-gyun ColumnistEntered 2024. 2. 27. 15:17

Should we give passionate support to the authentic melodrama of ‘Dr. Slump’ like we do to the soccer team ‘Dakgong’?

20240227151749292uadx.jpg

JTBC's Saturday-Sunday drama <Doctor Slump> is a quiet powerhouse. The viewership rating for Lunar New Year broadcasts fell to the 3% range (hereinafter referred to as Nielsen Korea), but it recorded around 6%, and non-holiday broadcasts are currently exceeding the 5% baseline viewership rating for popular dramas. <Doctor Slump> is a story about two good students, a man and a woman, who were academic rivals in high school, but become closer to each other through the trials they go through after becoming doctors.

Park Shin-hye broke the sluggish performance of her previous work <Sisyphus: the Myth> and returned to the role of the main character in a hit drama. Her 'Doctor Slump' is also her comeback work after her marriage, and she still shows her unwavering competitiveness as the heroine of a youth romance. Her co-star, Park Hyeong-sik, also naturally switches between comical and serious acting, and along with Park Shin-hye, she is improving the quality of her work in both romance and comedy.

Dramas usually reach a turning point after half an episode, but in <Doctor Slump>, the story lines in the first and second halves are particularly sharply divided as if they are cut off. The story line of a successful plastic surgeon, Yeo Yeong-woo (Park Hyeong-sik), who is embroiled in a medical accident that resulted in the death of a patient, is sued for tens of billions of won and loses everything, and regains his honor after many twists and turns, ends in episode 8, which is half of a total of 16 parts.

Spoiler

20240227151750558wmhm.jpg

The fact that Yeo Jeong-woo's lawsuit story, one of the most important storylines in <Doctor Slump>, ended in the middle of the drama was a quick ending that overturned expectations to the extent that there were concerns about what story would fill the second half of the drama. During the litigation process, thrillers such as hidden cameras and intruders were also unfolded, which served as seasoning to prevent the drama's melodrama from becoming boring, but this also disappeared after episode 8.

The recovery of Nam Ha-neul (Park Shin-hye) seems to be the most important story line in the second half of <Doctor Slump>. Of course, since the work is a romance, the ending where the love between the two main characters is completed is the key, but this love is changing from episode 8 to a structure that becomes possible when Namhaneul finds its place.

The first half of the drama is about Yeo Yeong-woo being embroiled in a lawsuit and Nam Ha-neul retiring from the hospital and suffering from burnout. Both of their lives are ruined, and thanks to that situation, the two become closer. In the process, Nam Ha-neul becomes a great help in helping Yeo Jeong-woo overcome the lawsuit and finally escape the crisis.

Spoiler

20240227151751810mtgo.jpg

However, when Yeo Jeong-woo returns to a normal life, Nam Ha-neul remains burnt out or unemployed, causing a rift between the two who were growing in love. Of course, even though Yeo Yeong-woo won the lawsuit, he still had serious trauma from the death and his life was not completely recovered.

Nam Ha-neul has a much more serious problem to overcome than Yeo Jeong-woo, so he becomes the center of the story's development in the second half of the play. Based on that structure, Nam Ha-neul and Yeo Jeong-woo pour their hearts into helping each other get back on their feet.

<Doctor Slump> is a hybrid of romance, comedy, thriller, and courtroom drama, with the first half being a mix, and then focusing on traditional melodrama in the second half. In fact, the reason most recent dramas are a hybrid of multiple genres from beginning to end is because of the viewers' ever-increasing fickleness(?).

20240227151753428lljy.jpg

There are many viewers who feel bored if one genre or episode drags on for a little too long. In such a situation, there is curiosity about what kind of results <Dr. Slump>, which had good viewership ratings in the first half, will achieve in the second half when it suddenly changes into a traditional melodrama. This is because it is a composition that is rarely seen these days when a traditional melodrama drags on for as long as 8 episodes.

In terms of soccer, it feels like watching a team match in the second half with the game being decided by 'shut up and attack' (a style of soccer that focuses only on aggressive tactics). <Doctor Slump> has become a drama that is full of romance. In the second half of the show, when the melodrama was strengthened, the 9th and 10th episodes seemed to have reduced the proportion of comedy even though it was a work that purported to be a romantic comedy.

Dakgong is an adventurous attempt that is likely to result in poor results in today's soccer, where the balance between offense and defense is emphasized. However, because the game is hot, there is also the advantage that if the result is not bad, the affection of the fans becomes stronger. A good melodrama is tied to growth. Whether love comes true or people go their separate ways in the end, a melodrama with its own growth will remain in viewers' memories for a long time.

20240227151754629bqao.jpg

The second half of <Doctor Slump> focuses on the process of overcoming the problems that Nam Ha-neul and Jeong-woo Jeong are currently facing. This resolution process is a journey whose end is connected to human maturity. In the end, when <Doctor Slump> is finished, it is expected to move towards a work that deeply combines growth and romance.

I am already curious after the final episode airs whether <Doctor Slump> will end well as a good work accompanied by growth by focusing on traditional melodrama in the second half, and if so, whether the viewers will give passionate support to the soccer team like they do for the soccer team.
