First Impressions: “Lies Hidden In My Garden” Promises A Cold, Slow Burn

20230624170909_kim-tae-hee-3.jpg?s=900x6

Lies Hidden In My Garden” marks Kim Tae Hee’s much-anticipated return to dramas and Lim Ji Yeon’s quick re-emergence after her hotly discussed role in “The Glory.” In a world with an abundance of true crime podcasts, thrillers, and murder mysteries, the show deftly distinguishes itself with not one but two unreliable narrators, an eerily bare score, and a sense of unease in every shot. Here’s everything I loved about the newest drama to hit the screen!

Warning: spoilers for episodes 1-2 below.

1. Two unreliable narrators: Joo Ran

kim-tae-hee-2-1.jpg

The show is told from two points of view. The first person is Moon Joo Ran (Kim Tae Hee), a housewife who lives a privileged life in a gated community with her doctor husband Park Jae Ho (Kim Sung Oh) and teenage son Park Seung Jae (Cha Sung Jae). We’re immediately launched into the fact that something isn’t quite right with Joo Ran or with her life. She cleans all day and sleeps for the rest of it. Her dreams are a troubled sequence that mimics Bluebeard’s room, featuring her son in a fox mask and a door within her consciousness that holds memories of her sister’s death. And she seems to have done something strange in Seoul that resulted in the family having to move to a gated community.

kim-sung-oh-cha-sung-jae.jpg

Her family life is strained. Her son is academically gifted but seems to want nothing to do with Joo Ran, while her husband seems to care deeply for her but also gaslights her at the drop of a hat. When Joo Ran insists that there’s a strange smell in the garden, her husband passes it off as fertilizer numerous times, convincing her that it’s in her head until she happens to hear a neighbor say the same thing about her home. It’s worth noting that Joo Ran doesn’t seem to fully trust her husband either because she investigates the smell herself after pretending that she believes him. But given her precarious mental state, it’s difficult to tell whether she can be trusted. And the same goes for our other narrator.

2. The other unreliable narrator: Sang Eun

Spoiler

lim-ji-yeon-2-1.jpg

Choo Sang Eun (Lim Ji Yeon) has a markedly different life to Joo Ran’s. She’s regularly abused by her scumbag husband Kim Yoon Beom (Choi Jae Rim). Everyone in their apartment complex knows about it but can do nothing to help her. For her part, Sang Eun is secretly gathering evidence to use against her husband, knowing that courts regularly favor men and wanting him jailed. She’s also faking a pregnancy for reasons we don’t know. She hears Yoon Beom on the phone making threatening calls to someone and watches warily as he even takes her to the blackmailee’s home and acts subtly threatening toward the man’s wife. Unbeknownst to Sang Eun, this is Joo Ran.

kim-tae-hee-choi-jae-rim.jpglim-ji-yeon-1.jpg

But that very night, when Sang Eun spends the night at her mother’s (a dementia patient) home, she receives word that her husband has been found dead. And her first reaction is to finally eat everything she wants. What’s fascinating is that both women are unreliable narrators, but Sang Eun has full confidence in what she sees and hears despite the years of abuse she’s suffered. Meanwhile, Joo Ran clearly doesn’t even trust herself. And both women’s troubles seem to stem from the men in their life.

2. All the suspicious men

choi-jae-rim.jpg

Yoon Beom easily outs himself as a villain from the start. In addition to abusing his wife, he’s also been lying to her for the past couple of months. It’s only after his death that Sang Eun finds out that he was kicked out of his job and withdrew their rental deposit because he urgently needed money. She finds his hustle: setting up men with minors and blackmailing them with the photos. One of those photos was of Jae Ho kneeling beside a minor. Whether he’s actually guilty of making advances toward minors or whether Yoon Beom was using a picture that could be misinterpreted so as to extort him is unclear.

lies-hidden-in-my-garden-3.jpg

What is clear is that Yoon Beom ordered Jae Ho to show up at a fishing spot in the middle of the night with 500 million won (approximately $384,000). When Jae Ho ghosted him, he showed up at Jae Ho’s home and poked around their house despite Joo Ran demanding that he leave. But Jae Ho is equally sketchy.

kim-sung-oh-1.jpg

He gaslights Joo Ran at every turn. First, he tells her that there’s no smell coming from the garden. When she finds a literal corpse there, he tells her that it was a glove filled with fertilizer. He also lies that he never went out to meet Yoon Beom when Joo Ran woke up to find him gone from their bedroom and mud on the tires. Finally, there’s a strange recurring scene regarding their son, where Joo Ran seems to be convinced that Seung Jae is lactose-intolerant, but Jae Ho keeps giving him milk and cookies as a study snack. Joo Ran almost seems to suspect there being something in Seung Jae’s milk. Nothing is what it seems.

kim-tae-hee-kim-sung-oh-1.jpg

3. Every woman for herself

It’s fascinating that Joo Ran’s first impulse upon finding a dead body in her garden is to sit and wait for Jae Ho to come home so she can prove that she was right. She doesn’t even call the cops. There’s a guardedness to both her and Sang Eun that could make them allies or enemies as both try to figure out what their husbands were up to.

lim-ji-yeon-5.jpg

Upon finding the potentially comprising picture of Jae Ho that Yoon Beom had on his second phone (which appears to be a woman’s phone), Sang Eun’s first impulse isn’t to warn Joo Ran but to continue the blackmail. With the biggest burden in her life finally gone, Sang Eun’s going all out to do as she wishes. The only question is whether soft-spoken Joo Ran is going to be collateral or whether she’ll go equally feral to protect her family.

kim-tae-hee-2.jpg

4. The unsettling cinematography and lack of a score

This show has been hitting it out of the park in directing, coloring, and editing. Joo Ran’s scenes are a bluish white, with wide shots emphasizing the stark emptiness of her home and her life. Sang Eun’s are a little more yellow-toned and largely take place outside in busy, cluttered areas like her life. There’s a jarring sense of unease to all of Joo Ran’s scenes, with languorous, slow shots at times and quick cuts at others to demonstrate when her mind cannot push aside all the questions she has any longer. The lack of an underpinning score in the drama only solidifies its quiet, dangerous feel like a suburban housewife horror story.

kim-tae-hee-kim-sung-oh-2.jpg

With two excellent first episodes, “Lies Hidden in My Garden” is off to a strong start. Given the show’s shorten run of eight episodes, we’ll likely be getting answers to some burning questions really soon. Like what’s up with Joo Ran believing that her son is lactose intolerant? What did Joo Ran do in Seoul for them to have to move here? How is Joo Ran’s sister’s death connected to all this, if at all? And who killed Yoon Beom? One thing’s for sure—I’m really looking forward to finding out.

5 Times Kim Tae Hee Grows Suspicious Of Kim Sung Oh In Episodes 3-4 Of “Lies Hidden In My Garden”

20230701115320_kim-tae-hee-lim-ji-yeon-2

We’re already halfway through “Lies Hidden in My Garden”! The reduced episode count makes for a tight watch as the story hurtles on at full speed. It’s refreshing to have characters confronting each other so soon and secrets spilling out this fast. Moon Joo Ran (Kim Tae Hee) continues to have the feeling that something isn’t quite right with her husband Park Jae Ho’s (Kim Sung Oh’s) absence the night that Kim Yoon Beom (Choi Jae Rim) died. But things turn on their head when she finds a dangerous ally in Jae Rim’s wife Choo Sang Eun (Lim Ji Yeon).

Warning: spoilers for episodes 3-4 below.

Spoiler

1. When Joo Ran witnesses Jae Ho’s private conversation with Sang Eun

lim-ji-yeon-2-2.jpg

Joo Ran knows something is off when Jae Ho’s phone vibrates with a message from a dead man, and she’s even more bewildered when Jae Ho goes to the funeral of said dead man. That’s why she pretended to want to support him by accompanying him. And when she spots Sang Eun with the extremely cutesy phone that was used to text Jae Ho, she looks extremely wary. The first two episodes showed her finding some of the 3D stickers from the phone in her house, and she seems to recognize the rest of the stickers on the phone.

kim-sung-oh-2-1.jpglim-ji-yeon-3-1.jpg

But Jae Ho does nothing to assauge her growing suspicions. He engages in a clandestine conversation with Sang Eun out of Joo Ran’s earshot. Sang Eun’s happy to continue the blackmail, and we discover more about what she’s learned her dead husband was up to. Turns out that Yoon Beom was an abuser with a strange moral compass. He wasn’t blackmailing Jae Ho with pictures from the phone because he took them. He was blackmailing Jae Ho with the existence of the phone itself because he found the phone on Jae Ho. Meaning the sketchy videos of what looked like prostitution could have been Jae Ho’s work. Jae Ho listens to Sang Eun’s threats before issuing one of his own: that Sang Eun could end up like her dead husband if she doesn’t make wiser choices. That infuriates Sang Eun, and when she gets a chance, she immediately spills to a frozen Joo Ran that her husband killed Yoon Beom.

kim-tae-hee-lim-ji-yeon-1.jpg

2. When she finds the family car’s dashcam wiped

Joo Ran’s well on the way to believing her husband committed murder, but the dashcam of their family car seals the deal. The footage from the night her husband supposedly met Yoon Beom at a fishing spot during a storm has conveniently vanished. When Jae Ho catches her snooping around the car, she lies that she lost an earring.

kim-tae-hee-3-2.jpg

The next day, she seeks out her scandalous neighbour Oh Hae Soo (Jung Woon Sun) in the hopes that Hae Soo’s CCTV caught a glimpse of Jae Ho leaving the house on the night of Yoon Beom’s death. Hae Soo is confused by Joo Ran’s determination to view her CCTV footage, but a silent understanding passes between the two women once they both see Jae Ho leaving the house on the night of the death. Hae Soo is the town pariah and has been in a similar situation. A few years ago, a strange smell came from Hae Soo’s home. Upon investigation, the police found Hae Soo’s dead husband in the house along with Hae Soo, whom no one had even known existed. There was no evidence that she killed her husband, but people still call her a murderer. There’s an odd kinship between Hae Soo and Joo Ran as if each knows what the other isn’t telling them. And Joo Ran’s going to need all the allies she can get because Jae Ho is pulling out all stops to keep her from finding the truth.

3. When Jae Ho blatantly gaslights her

kim-tae-hee-1-2.jpg

Jae Ho knows that something is off when he finds the earrings Joo Ran pretended were missing. But rather fear that she’s onto him, he sees it as a chance to throw her off his tail. He calls her over and pretends that he found the missing earring in the car. To Joo Ran’s credit, she immediately drops the lie and tells him that she never lost an earring, she wanted to know where he went that night. But Jae Ho does the most despicable thing imaginable and gaslights her, pretending that he really did find the earring in the car. He literally tells his own wife that she doesn’t know her own mind and wasn’t lying to him. He treats her like she’s crazy for suspecting him of leaving the house and throws the incident in Seoul at her face. And he has the gall to storm out acting like she wronged him.

Poor Joo Ran is left questioning her sanity.

kim-sung-oh-1-2.jpgkim-tae-hee-2-3.jpg

I hate him.

Jae Ho’s actions are the all the more malignant when we find out what the incident in Seoul was all about. Turns out that Joo Ran not only happened upon her dead sister’s body, she also may have glimpsed the killer. A man by the elevators watched Joo Ran have a panic attack at the sight of her sister’s corpse and made no move to help her. There’s something eerie about his eyes, and he follows her to the ambulance where she tries to tell the police that her sister was murdered. But nothing comes of it. A few years later, Joo Ran runs into the same man. But now he’s her son Park Seung Jae’s (Cha Sung Jae’s) teacher. She pleads with Seung Jae and Jae Ho to believe her on the man’s untrustworthiness, but they refuse to listen. When her son goes on a trip involving said teacher, Joo Ran loses it. She shows up at the trip, looking dazed, and wallops the teacher on the head. Seung Jae’s horrified, and everyone there judges her. The teacher seems to have been fine afterwards, but the gossip was bad enough for them to have to move. It isn’t clear as to how this teacher is connected to Yoon Beom, Jae Ho, and the complex scheme unfolding here. Yet, it’s apparent that Joo Ran has been told that she’s crazy for a very long time. And she’s finally sick of believing it.

4. When Joo Ran meets with Sang Eun and discovers Jae Ho’s secret life

kim-tae-hee-4-1.jpglim-ji-yeon-1-2.jpg

Joo Ran meets with Sang Eun in secret, asking her what she meant by her accusations that Jae Ho killed Yoon Beom. Sang Eun is refreshingly honest, showing Joo Ran the cutesy phone and informing her that Yoon Beom stole it from Jae Ho, raising the question of why Jae Ho had an underage girl’s phone with compromising photos of him. Joo Ran doesn’t want to believe that Jae Ho could be embroiled in prostitution, but Sang Eun calls Joo Ran out for not going straight to Jae Ho if she trusted him so much. Joo Ran doesn’t trust her husband, and Sang Eun knows it.

kim-tae-hee-lim-ji-yeon-3.jpg

The two try to investigate what happened to Soo Min but hit dead ends. Meanwhile, to both women’s surprise, Jae Ho reaches out to Sang Eun and agrees to meet to discuss how much she wants from him for the comprising pictures. He doesn’t know that Joo Ran’s with Sang Eun and listening to every word, looking shaken.

5. When Jae Ho shows up for Sang Eun’s blackmail attempt

Joo Ran borrows Hae Soo’s car and watches in the parking lot as her husband arrives to meet Sang Eun. The worst part is that he lies to Joo Ran saying that he’ll be home late due to work, but she knows exactly where he is. Sang Eun isn’t subtle about her glee and demands 500 million won (approximately $382,000). Jae Ho initially starts at 200 million (approximately $153,000), but one look at the photo of him with Soo Min has him offering 300 million (approximately $229,000). Joo Ran can hear everything because Sang Eun has her on the phone. Her world is crumbling, and it appears as though Jae Ho is guilty as sin. He even flashes back to him dragging Yoon Beom’s body back inside Sang Eun’s apartment and tossing him in the closet. But the tables suddenly turn when he asks Sang Eun how she lifted Yoon Beom and got him in the car.

kim-sung-oh-3.jpg

There’s a telling pause that indicates that Sang Eun’s been hiding something too. We see her get behind the wheel of Yoon Beom’s car with him in the passenger seat, indicating that she drove him to the place where he was discovered as dead. It was raining heavily that night, and the first episodes showed her going to her mother’s at night, drenched and pale. Jae Ho accuses her of killing Yoon Beom and trying to pin it on him. Sang Eun denies it, but Joo Ran no longer knows whom to trust. Both her husband and Sang Eun are hiding something. Sang Eun snaps at her to get her thoughts off her chest if she thinks Sang Eun killed Yoon Beom, but they’re interrupted by a caller who demands money for Soo Min’s return. And, just like that, Joo Ran and Sang Eun return to being wary allies.

kim-tae-hee-im-ji-yeon-1.jpg

This show is knocking it out of the park with pacing. It’s almost a little too quick. The main mystery regarding who killed Yoon Beom and what Jae Ho and Soo Min have to do with it promises to wrap up soon, but the underlying mystery of what happened to Sang Eun’s sister and how that relates to this, if at all, remains unclear. With only four episodes left, I hope the show can wrap every thread up satisfactorily.

cha-sung-jae-1.jpg

Next week’s preview shows Seung Jae, who has been trying to secretly move out of the family home, admit to his mother that he smelled the same smell she did. But why didn’t he say anything when his father denied its existence? He informed the realtor that he plans to move into the apartment with an adult. His mother? His father?

Hae Soo, whom he seems to have taken a liking too? At the pace this show is going, we’ll find out real soon!

Mystery, suspense thrillers find growing popularity this summer

The popularity of thrillers like “Lies Hidden in My Garden” and “Revenant” suggest that horror-themed shows and movies have become a spine-chilling way for many Koreans to escape the blistering summer heat.

Cable channel Genie TV kicked off the summer season on June 19 with “Lies Hidden in My Garden” an eight-part suspense thriller series.

With the release of its fifth episode on Monday, the project continues to draw drama fans, meeting the show's well-deserved expectation as one of this year’s most anticipated series.

"Lies Hidden in My Garden" has ranked No. 3 on the weekly list of the most talked-about TV dramas since its premiere, according to the analytics firm Good Data Corp.

The company monitors and compiles data from online posts, videos, social media, news reports and blog posts in determining its rankings.

The series' lead actors Kim Tae-hee, Zev Choi, Lim Ji-yeon and Kim Seung-o swept the top spots on the weekly rankings for the most searched keywords in the last week of June.

“Lies Hidden in My Garden” not only became the most watched show on South Korea’s Netflix TV chart as of June 29, it also topped Amazon Prime Video’s TV show chart in Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar and the Philippines on Sunday.

Adapted from a Korean novel titled “A House With a Yard” (unofficial translation) by author Kim Jin-young, “Lies Hidden in My Garden” presents the story of a housewife named Joo-ran (played by Kim Tae-hee), whose life veers in an unexpected direction after she notices the smell of a decomposing corpse in her backyard.

Big data analysis collects data in areas including consumer participation, media activity, communication, and community activity, then converts this data into numerical values. For the month of July, 2PM's Junho of the ongoing JTBC Sat-Sun drama 'King The Land' took up 1st place with 3,310,965 points total. Actress Kim Tae Ri of SBS's new occult thriller series 'Revenant' took up 2nd place with 3,159,070 points, while Kim Tae Hee of the ENA mystery drama 'Lies Hidden In My Garden' followed behind in 3rd place with 3,139,139 points total.   :coolshades:
