Chief Detective 1958: Episodes 1-2

by lovepark

53_17137663300004_20240422502298.jpg

The iconic series that ran for nearly two decades and aired 880 episodes has gotten a prequel, but don’t worry if you haven’t caught up with the behemoth original since there’s plenty of fun for everyone in this new show. Turning back the clock to a time when the country was ruled by a dictator and justice seemed a far cry from reality, a group of detectives would change the tide with their doggedness, ingenuity, and absurdity — showing the world that there’s very few problems a bag of snakes can’t solve.

EPISODES 1-2

The show opens with the original chief detective (cameo by Choi Bool-am) visiting his grandson who looks strikingly similar to his younger self. At the police station, he catches a glimpse of his old team pictured on the wall, and the show takes us to the past — a prequel to the adventures of the legendary detective PARK YOUNG-HAN (Lee Je-hoon). In 1958, Young-han makes a name for himself in his hometown as the greatest cow-thief catching officer and is recruited to a position in Seoul.

None of his previous accolades mean much in the big city, but Young-han soon finds a new title for himself after his first assignment. Walking right into a den of gangsters, our young detective tosses the boss a pair of handcuffs and orders him to arrest himself. The thugs don’t take kindly to his cocky attitude, but Young-han came prepared. He brandishes a bag of venomous snakes, and though his threat feels like a bluff — no sane man would bring snakes to a fight — we learn that Young-han is no ordinary man. As he leaves the room with the boss in tow, his bag rips, and thirty snakes drop to the ground in the middle of the restaurant, earning him the nickname “snake detective.”

It seems Young-han has the skills (or at least the gumption) to back up his big talk, but the real trouble in Seoul isn’t about catching gangsters but arresting them. The infamous underworld leader LEE JUNG-JAE (Kim Young-sung) has the superintendent in his pocket, so despite Young-han procuring a confession out of the assailant, the higher-ups force him to release the criminal. At least his chief YOO DAE-CHEON (Choi Deok-moon) is on his side, even buying his new (and only) team member a suit, but Chief Yoo isn’t exactly in his prime to be tussling in the streets.

Enter Young-han’s first recruit: mad dog KIM SANG-SOON (Lee Dong-hwi). An outcasted detective from Unit 2, Sang-soon will bite any gangster who crosses his path (as well as the occasional dog), making him the perfect candidate for Young-han’s team. Their first task together is to bust an illegal trade between the gang and the U.S. military, which also means turning against Sang-soon’s old unit who are all in on the shady deal. Our hot-blooded detectives break into the warehouse, guns blazing, and it becomes a showdown between the two of them and a throng of heavily armed gangsters, soldiers, and officers.

It seems Young-han’s bravery borders stupidity since he shouts at the others to shoot him, but before he actually gets a bullet in his skull, Sang-soon hits him on the head. He pretends to side with his old unit, but the gangsters know of the mad dog’s reputation and knock him out, too. Thus, our heroes wake up in the middle of nowhere, their plans a complete failure — or at least, that’s what their enemies think. Since they couldn’t stop the deal, Young-han and Sang-soon do the next best thing: hold a free giveaway of all the illegal goods to the people.

Our brazen heroes waltz into the station licking stolen lollipops and tell Unit 2 that thanks aren’t necessary. Even the superintendent is left speechless when Young-han explains how he saved their necks by not reporting them to the military police, and the corrupt cops keep quiet for now. On the other hand, underworld mastermind Lee Jung-jae is displeased by Young-han’s shenanigans and sends his men to teach him a lesson. While Young-han can take two of them easily, ten is a bit much even for our protagonist, so he runs through the streets for a place to hide.

563562_573655_4829.jpg

‘Investigation Chief 1958’ is a prequel to the drama ‘Investigation Chief’ and begins in 1958, when detective Park Young-han (played by Lee Je-hoon) was appointed to Seoul.

This drama depicts the story of a detective named Lee Je-hoon (Park Young-han), who specializes in apprehending petty thieves in an age of barbarism, as a team with three unique colleagues, breaking down the absurdities of corrupt power with common sense, and being reborn as a detective for the people.

Hongin said, “I am happy to appear in ‘Investigation Team Leader 1958,’” and added, “I ask for a lot of interest and love as I worked hard to film it.”

Hongin, who has been continuously working on his next work since ‘Wedding Impossible’ aired, has proven his wide acting spectrum by embodying detailed emotional acting and attractive characters in his previous work. Hong-in, who enlivens the drama with his high character digestion ability in each work he appears, plans to show his deep acting skills by challenging a different character in this 'Investigation Chief 1958'. Three reasons why Lee Je-hoon’s ‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’ captivated viewers

news-p.v1.20240424.f5869253636945bab4b54

‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’ is receiving rave reviews as a well-made return. MBC's Friday-Saturday drama 'Investigation Chief 1958' (written by Kim Young-shin, directed by Kim Seong-hoon) is a highly anticipated work that heralds the birth of a new legend, captivating viewers in just two episodes and announcing a successful return. The viewership rating for the first broadcast exceeded double digits, and it received an unusual response by ranking 3rd overall in TV-OTT integrated drama topicality and 1st overall in the number of K-drama news articles (Fundex, as of the 3rd week of April). We looked into the secret to the popularity of 'Investigation Team Leader 1958', which aims to become a legend.

news-p.v1.20240424.9f482ee6e51541cbbc835

# Various attractions and unique pleasures set in the ‘1958’ era

‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’ chose to be a prequel to ‘Investigation Team Leader’ and clearly differentiated itself by being set in 1958, the time when Captain Park (played by Choi Bul-am) was a young man. As director Kim Seong-hoon said, “The point is to bring out the atmosphere and colors of the era,” the visuals of the sets, costumes, and props that perfectly embodied 1958 were a delight to the eyes.

In addition, it vividly portrayed the joys and sorrows of the lives of the people of that era, highlighting the humanity of Detective Park Young-han (played by Lee Je-hoon). Also, as with the original ‘Investigation Chief’, expectations are also high that ‘Investigation Chief 1958’ will also deal with crime subjects that provide a glimpse into the times from 1958 to 1963.

news-p.v1.20240424.c4b67ee288554e74a66dc

# Retains the charm of the original and adds newness to the prequel

Fans of the original film expressed their joy at the return of ‘Chief of Investigation’ after 35 years. The signal music, the symbol of 'Investigation Chief 1958', recreated the same melody as the original with a sensuous arrangement and three-dimensional performance, and the role names of the detectives in 'Investigation Chief 1958' used the names of existing actors, creating nostalgia for viewers who remember the original.

Above all, there was a reason for the confidence of writer Jay Park, who cited “the fun of a prequel” as a differentiator. If Captain Park of ‘Investigation Team Leader’ was a mature detective with maturity and skill, Park Young-han of ‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’ was a growing detective with passion and spirit. The character narratives of each of Park Young-han, Kim Sang-sun, Kyung-hwan Cho, and Ho-jeong Seo, as well as how they met and came together, drew more interest by depicting the beginning of the legend. In addition, new characters such as Lee Hye-joo (played by Seo Eun-soo), Yoo Dae-cheon (played by Choi Deok-moon), and Bong Nan-sil (played by Jeong Soo-bin) further enriched the play.

# Completed well-made retro crime investigation drama

The impeccable synergy between the director, writer, and actors was instrumental in leading to such successive favorable reviews. The efforts of director Kim Seong-hoon, who tried to remain faithful to the essence of ‘story’ even in his first drama directing, and writers Kim Young-shin and Park Jay-beom, who wrote a detailed and well-structured script encompassing comedy, action, and romance, shone. Lastly, the passionate performances of actors such as Lee Je-hoon, Lee Dong-hwi, Choi Woo-sung, Yoon Hyun-soo, and Seo Eun-soo, who showed more affection and sincerity for the work than ever before, contributed greatly to the creation of a well-made retro crime investigation drama.

The production team of ‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’ said, “If episodes 1 and 2 announced the departure of young Park Young-han and the detectives, a full-fledged investigation into the case will begin with episode 3, which airs this week. “Please look forward to the various cases that reflect the times of 1958 and the analog investigation of the four detectives who will confront them.” Episode 3 of MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama ‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’ will be aired at 9:50 PM on the 26th.

Chief Detective 1958: Episodes 3-4

by lovepark

The cases get a more serious this week as the body count climbs up. Thankfully, the villains aren’t as cunning as they think, and our heroes aren’t as bumbling as they appear. Though the odds are never in their favor, with a bit of gumption and teamwork, our heroes manage to pull off the impossible and save the day once again.

EPISODES 3-4

The shenanigans continue with our newly formed unit as they dive headlong into danger. While their methods may be unconventional (and even questionable at times), their sense of justice remains strong and bright in a sea of corruption and ne’er-do-wells. Of course, Young-han and his team’s integrity are more like liabilities to their superintendent who wishes they follow his orders for a change — especially when it comes to keeping his pockets full of coin. His latest asinine command is to have the entire precinct guard Lee Jung-jae in his upcoming meeting, but our motley crew have bigger concerns than protecting the underworld leader.

A string of bank robberies grips the nation, leaving a trail of innocent deaths in their wake. As the incidents get closer to Seoul, it catches Young-han’s attention, and with the help of his team, he devises a plan to stop these criminals once and for all. In the midst of all these preparations though, Young-han forgets about the date he planned with Hye-joo as thanks for saving his life.

In order to make it up to her, he visits her bookstore in his new suit and fixes her broken shelf. As they mend their relationship and get to know each other better, she asks about the scar on his wrist, and he tells her that he got when he was a student soldier — a nightmare that still haunts him. After hearing his answer, she buys him a bracelet to cover up the scar, leaving Young-han even more smitten than before.

Though I’m sure Young-han wouldn’t mind spending more time with Hye-joo, duty calls. Thanks to Ho-jung’s sleepless (and bathless) nights, they discover a pattern in the robbers’ operations and realize that the next hit will be on the day of Lee Jung-jae’s meeting. They also piece together the clues about which bank will be targeted, and through a game of rock-paper-scissors, Sang-soon goes undercover as a security guard. In case things go awry, Sang-soon also drugs the branch manager, ensuring that no one has access to the vault, and his rather unethical decision pays off since the team’s plan veers off course.

The first hitch is their superintendent who knew his troublesome unit was up to no good, and like any rational person, he chose to escalate the situation by throwing them in a holding cell. This means Sang-soon is the only one at the bank when the robbers charge in, making their original plan to nab the criminals outside obsolete. The team, at least, accounted for this, and with some crocodile tears and emotional manipulation, they convince an officer to release them in time to initiate plan B.

Unfortunately, they run into a second problem: the robbers take a hostage for their getaway, and it’s none other than Hye-joo. Dressed as one of the robbers, Young-han flashes his bracelet to Hye-joo who recognizes it, but not long after, the other robbers start questioning his identity, too. Our daring leading lady makes a distraction — fulfilling a childhood dream in the process — and her moment of staged hysteria allows Young-han to catch the robbers by surprise. As they fight in the tight jeep, Young-han swerves away from a pedestrian and crashes into a parked vehicle. Though the leader tries to escape, he finds himself surrounded by officers on all sides. Since the superintendent didn’t want to come, Young-han brought the robbers to him.

Despite actively hindering the team on the bank case, the superintendent takes all the credit for the splashy arrest, including a hefty cash award. The crew doesn’t mind the loss, but why let their scumbag boss take the money when they could spread rumors that he donated it all to orphans, instead. Speaking of orphans, 1950s Korea has no shortage of problems, and the next one that lands in unit one’s lap is a distressed mother looking for her kidnapped baby.

In a grim turn of events, a military platoon uncovered a grave of infants, and after some sleuthing, Young-han learns that the missing baby was part of the group. The horrors don’t end there, though. As the team digs deeper into this case, they uncover a child trafficking ring led by an infamous pro-Japanese swindler who makes my blood boil. There’s a special place in hell reserved for people like her, and Sang-soon, in particular, agrees with my sentiment. As an orphan himself, our mad dog feels a special connection to this case, and the abuse he witnesses hidden underneath the gaudy exterior of the orphanage reminds him of his own past experience in a broken system meant to protect the weak and powerless.

However, without solid evidence, our team cannot touch the demon director since she rubs elbows with the elite and uses her connections to avoid arrest. Thus, our heroes work from the outside in and track down a cosmetic saleswoman who kidnaps children to fuel her gambling addiction. They also gather evidence from the clinic in cahoots with the director, and these two crucial testaments give the team enough justification to raid the orphanage and make arrests. Alas, her two underlings — the ones doing the actual dirty work — take the fall for their boss who eagerly pretends to be just as much a victim as everyone else.

In the teaser clip, Park Yeong Han’s confident declaration, “I have come to offer a daring proposal,” stirs anticipation, sparking speculation about the nature of his offer.

In today’s episode, the body of Seong Chil (Eom Joon Ki), a young man from a rice cake shop in Jongnam Market, is found covered in blood. Despite Park Yeong Han’s unwavering conviction of Sal Mo Sa’s (real name Eo Sam Ryong) (played by Kang In Kwon) guilt, apprehending him proves to be a daunting task.

The production team teased, “Finally, the first encounter between Park Yeong Han and Lee Jung Jae takes place. As Lee Jung Jae, the formidable villain who keeps getting in the way of Park Yeong Han’s investigation finally makes a move, the tension in the narrative is bound to reach new heights. Please stay tuned to see if Park Yeong Han, who held Seong Chil in special regard, can uncover the truth behind his tragic death.”
