Chief Detective 1958: Episodes 5-6

by lovepark

A new age. A new time. While the world ushers in a new decade, some things remain the same. Villains still exist, corruption runs rampant, and the law isn’t always enough to get the bad guys. Thankfully, our heroes haven’t changed either, and until they resign, they will devote their lives to locking up crooks to make the world a safer place.

EPISODES 5-6

The next case for unit one starts off close to home when the adopted grandson of the rice cake lady gets murdered right outside their shop. They were the first people to welcome Young-han into the city, so when he finds the young man’s body brutally stabbed, things become personal. Noticing the other merchants shake in fear at the mention of the murder, Young-han knows the gang did it and takes matters into his own hands. With his team in tow, they break into the gangster’s hideout, a flurry of fists, kicks, and wooden planks. Young-han confronts their leader, Viper, in a one-on-one match, and though the latter unsheathes a sword in the middle of their fight, Young-han whips out the other man’s belt and beats him with it.

Though Young-han is convinced that Viper did it, he has no evidence to support his claims. His rash actions lead his team into trouble as the superintendent threatens to dismiss them for abuse of power. Chief Yoo steps in on his boys’ behalf — his time with the special forces gave him enough dirt to ruin the superintendent’s career — and he gives them another chance to solve the case properly this time. Learning from his mistake, Young-han approaches the murder as a detective rather than a vigilante, and after promising the grandmother to catch the culprit, he earns her permission to perform an autopsy on her grandson.

While science gives them clues to deduce Viper as the murderer, Young-han turns to more superstitious methods to gather concrete evidence. A recent cult has swept the city, and one of their fervent believers is Viper’s underling. Manufacturing some “accidents” — a broken mirror here, a falling sign there — they manage to convince their target that a spirit is cursing him. In order to appease this ghost, the underling inadvertently leads the officers straight to the murder weapon. All that’s left now is to arrest Viper.

Chief Detective 1958: Episodes 7-8

by lovepark

Our heroes watch as the nation enters a time of development with shiny signs and taller buildings lining the streets of the city, yet beneath the glamour lies the forgotten and powerless. The corrupt remain in charge, simply donning a new name to run their schemes, but even if our heroes can’t change the world, it won’t stop them from trying.

EPISODES 7-8

The show picks up from last week as two cornered superiors, a completely awake chief, and a confident detective sit down to negotiate a deal. As it turns out, Chief Yoo regained consciousness a while ago and set out to trap his assailants with Young-han’s help. Their surprise attack worked, but as our heroes reach the finish line, their goals diverge. The chief rips up the evidence that proves the deputy director’s loyalty to Japan in exchange for the safety of his unit. While his actions are understandable, his team wishes he didn’t surrender to the enemy for their sake, but Chief Yoo laughs since he has another card up his sleeve.

Some months pass, and true to their word, the higher-ups leave unit one alone… until a particular case literally lands at their feet. While on a stroll with his wife, Young-han witnesses a man fall out a window from a securities firm. At first, the appearance of a will and a few co-workers’ testimonies suggest suicide, but the team uncovers a forged letter, contradicting facts, and a larger conspiracy hidden within this simple murder. With the help of civilian witnesses — particularly from the overlooked of society — they narrow down their suspects to three people: the middleman, the money, and the muscle.

Young-han and his team realize that their culprits are involved in a bigger stock manipulation scheme with rumored ties to the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA), and at this rate, thousands of people will face bankruptcy if no one intervenes. However, they still can’t make sense of the victim’s connection until Officer Bong hands them the missing piece: a prosecutor handling stock-related crimes died a mere ten minutes before their current case. In other words, the two victims were planning to reveal everything and died for their heroic actions. With the puzzle solved, it’s time to make some arrests.

The team waltzes into a gambling den run by the money and causes a scene. Kyung-hwan beats the muscle in a game of arm wrestling, Ho-jung guides the gamblers out of the warehouse, Sang-soon throws the middleman over his shoulder, and Young-han cuffs the money after a few punches. They bring the trio in for interrogation, and the lower-rung members rat each other out to lessen their sentence. However, before they can lock them behind bars, Superintendent Baek walks in with the KCIA and intercepts their suspects. Though, Young-han can’t catch the middleman, he does have enough evidence to incriminate the other two for murder, allowing him to close the case for the victim at the very least.

The episode then ends on a somber note as our heroes muse about their powerlessness and comment on how big the shadows get the higher the buildings grow. For this fictional case, the middleman fled the country, the money disappeared, and the muscle committed “suicide” in jail. As for the real-life incident that inspired the story, the stock market crashed in a couple of months due to the manipulation, and in the following year, the responsible parties were acquitted on all counts. It seems reality truly is scarier than fiction.

Before our heroes can even catch their breaths, two new cases pop up for unit one, and we get our first split investigation. Team Young-han and Ho-jung deal with a gruesome murder of a mother while team Sang-soon and Kyung-hwan tackle a gang of thieves targeting rich drunkards in the streets. For both pairs, their search leads them to primary suspects rather quickly, but their initial guesses turn into duds.

chiefdetective0708-04.jpg

In the instance of the murdered mother, Young-han and Ho-jung find evidence in the boyfriend’s room, but these were planted since the bloodied shirt doesn’t fit and their suspect has a solid alibi. They comb through the clues once again, but this time, Young-han adds a new candidate to the mix: the victim’s young son. Appearance-wise, the son seems innocent — frail, sick, and polite, he’s the picture-perfect model student — but strip away these biases and the truth reveals something sinister.

Once arrested, the son drops his facade and snickers at the silly detectives. He gloats about killing his father who refused to pass down his land and then his mother for dating so soon after his death. Of course, the son only confesses because the law will protect him; after all, he’s only fourteen. The worst that will happen is a slap on the wrist, and Young-han has no choice other than to let the murderer return home for the night.

However, as they walk the boy to his house, Young-han pulls out his gun and threatens to spin a tale of his own. The son bargains for his life, promising them a cut of his land, and it’s clear to our heroes that the young man shows no remorse for his actions. Though Young-han never planned to kill the son, he doesn’t let him leave, either. They cuff the boy and reveal a miscalculation in his plans: his mother lied to him about his age, making him old enough to rot in a detention center for years to come.

The reactions of Kim Sang Soon (Lee Dong Hwi), Cho Kyung Hwan (Choi Woo Sung), and Seo Ho Jung (Yoon Hyun Soo), who look at Investigation Team 2 with suspicion, are also notable.

by M Lim

Ahead of tonight’s episode, “Chief Detective 1958” has released captivating new stills!

MBC’s “Chief Detective 1958” is the prequel to the classic Korean series “Chief Inspector,” which ran for 18 years from 1971 to 1989 and achieved an incredible peak of 70 percent ratings back in its heyday. While the original show was set in the 1970s and 1980s (present day at the time), “Chief Detective 1958” is set even earlier, in 1958. Lee Je Hoon plays a younger version of the titular chief detective Park Young Han, who was played by Choi Bool Am in the original series.

Spoilers

In the last episode of “Chief Detective 1958,” Park Young Han and Seo Ho Jung (Yoon Hyun Soo) delved into the murder case of a woman in her 30s, while Kim Sang Soon (Lee Dong Hwi) and Cho Kyung Hwan (Choi Woo Sung) tackled a string of muggings.

The revelation that the culprits in both cases are linked to teenagers was shocking, highlighting the stark contrast between a merciless killer exploiting legal loopholes and the plight of boys deprived of legal protection. The narrative prompted a profound reflection on the true essence and impact of juvenile law.

The newly released stills for today’s episode depict Park Young Han and the detectives of Investigation Team 1 rushing to the scene of a harrowing traffic accident. The shattered vehicle amidst a road littered with glass shards and debris hints at the gravity of the situation. Viewers are left intrigued, eager to find the possible connection between this accident and the mysterious murder of a female worker, teased in the teaser for tonight’s episode.

On the morning of May 20 (local time), Lee Je Hoon conducted an interview with local reporters in Jongno-gu, Seoul. During the interview, he talked about the recently concluded MBC drama Chief Detective 1958 and his upcoming projects.

Set in an era of chaos, Chief Detective 1958 tells the story of Detective Park Young Han (Lee Je Hoon), who, unable to see human dignity being trampled upon, joins forces with three colleagues to shatter the corrupt authority.

Chief Detective 1958 is a prequel to Chief Inspector. Lee Je Hoon played the protagonist, Detective Park Young Han.

Chief Detective 1958 concluded successfully with a nationwide rating of 10.6%. Given that Lee Je Hoon not only played the young Park Young Han but also appeared as his grandson Park Jun Seo, fans can't help but wonder if there will be a second season. When asked about the possibility of Season 2, Lee Je Hoon responded, "I have my expectations as well, but the decision is not mine to make. Our drama ... feels complete as a prequel and a standalone story."

1wz0Jb_2f.png

Having often played righteous characters, Lee Je Hoon explains why he continues to choose such roles despite his on-screen characters being seen as predictable, saying, "I instinctively feel that the stories people are interested in and want to see are about justice and retribution. People in the world desire poetic justice and retribution. Since society doesn't always provide that, they want catharsis and relieve stress by watching such works. This is why I think people love and seek out such works, and I am naturally drawn to them as well. ... At the same time, I often think that I need to show more diverse sides of myself and not be confined to a single type [of role]."

Talking about his busy schedule, Lee Je Hoon jokingly remarked, "I'm grateful that I have dramas lined up one after another, so there is no room for new projects in my schedule until next year. Maybe that's why I'm not receiving new offers. I think I can reschedule and push back Taxi Driver Season 3 a bit," he quipped.

Recently, writer Kim Eun Hee announced that she had started working on the script of Season 2 of the tvN hit thriller Signal. When asked if he would be joining Signal Season 2, Lee Je Hoon responded, "I heard that writer Kim Eun Hee is working on the script." "haven't heard about the casting of other actors [from Season 1], but if they do it, I will join as well, and joked, "She wouldn't write the script excluding me, right? I'm waiting for it,he said jokingly.

Lee Je Hoon will next be seen on the big screen in the movie Escape. He is also preparing to commence the shooting for his new K-drama, The Art of Negotiation.

'Investigation Team Leader 1958' Lee Dong-hwi "I wanted to express the persistence of a detective"

AKR20240520132100005_02_i_P4.jpg

"At first, I only thought about the character biting without hesitation, but after hearing the story of this character from teacher Choi Bul-am, I realized that it is not just about 'biting', but more emphasis on persistence and instinct. “I felt like I had to do it.”

Detective Kim Sang-sun, played by Lee Dong-hwi in the MBC drama 'Investigation Team Leader 1958', which ended on the 18th, is nicknamed 'Mad Dog' because he does not hesitate to bite a criminal with his mouth to catch him. He is also the character played by the late actor Kim Sang-soon in his previous work, ‘Chief of Investigation 1958.’

At a cafe in Jongno-gu, Seoul, where he met for an interview commemorating the end of the drama on the 20th, Lee Dong-hwi explained, "I tried to express the eyes and persistence of detective Kim Sang-sun who does not want to let go of the criminal."

Choi Bul-am, who played Captain Park Young-han in 'Investigation Chief', met Lee Dong-hwi and said about the actor Kim Sang-sun, whom he knew, 'an actor with a very good memory', and about Kim Sang-soon in the drama, 'He has a tenacity and animal sense that does not miss even a word during the investigation. He is said to have explained that he is a person who conducts investigations.

Lee Dong-hwi said about this, "In fact, there was more room for expression in 'Investigation Chief 1958' as it deals with the story of an earlier era than the previous work, 'Investigation Chief', but Choi Bul-am pointed out the character's personality that I had never even thought of. “It was a great help,” he said.

Detective Kim Sang-sun, played by Lee Dong-hwi, always sleeps in a police station cabinet with a disheveled look on his face. When a crime breaks out, he rushes to the scene before anyone else, and sometimes stays in hiding waiting for the suspect. He is a person with a burning sense of justice who shouts, “Let’s catch him!” when he identifies a suspect.

Lee Dong-hwi also attracted attention with his frequent action acting in this drama. He had already appeared as a detective from the Naval Special Warfare Team (UDT) in the movie 'Extreme Job' and showed spectacular action scenes, but there were many more action scenes in 'Investigation Chief 1958'.

Lee Dong-hwi expressed his confidence, saying, “Actually, action acting is not an uncomfortable field for me.” He explained, “People who like dancing have an easy time doing action scenes,” and “You have to have a sense of rhythm to be able to achieve what you promised in advance, and I’ve really loved dancing since I was young.” When asked if he got hurt while performing a lot of action scenes in this work, Lee Dong-hwi confidently answered, "Not at all."

Lee Dong-hwi especially described ‘Investigation Team Leader 1958’ as a work that pays tribute to his previous work, ‘Investigation Team Leader’. He said, “I would like to give all the credit to teacher Choi Bul-am, Kim Sang-soon (who appeared in ‘Chief of Investigation’), Kyung-hwan Cho, Ho-jung Kim, and Nam Sung-hoon.” That's right, even though 'Chief of Investigation' is a creation, each actor's personality is reflected in their characters to the extent that their names are used as the names of the main characters.

The main character Park Young-han's name is the same as actor Choi Bul-am's real name (Choi Young-han), and in the drama, detective Kim Sang-soon is played by actor Kim Sang-sun, Kyung-hwan Cho is played by actor Cho Kyung-hwan, and Seo Ho-jung is played by actor Kim Ho-jung, all of whom have the same name as their roles. Lee Dong-hwi expressed his gratitude, saying, “It was a drama with a really strong power that emerged from the times, and teacher Choi Bul-am even appeared in the drama himself to conclude the story.”

Recently, Lee Dong-hwi is loved by the public, not only recording a high viewership rating of around 10% with 'Investigation Team Leader 1958', but also mobilizing 10 million viewers with the movie 'Crime City 4'.
Regarding the release of the two works at the same time, Lee Dong-hwi said, "Actually, I was very concerned because the two works came out at the same time when I didn't expect them." He added, "The roles I played in 'Crime City 4' and 'Investigation Chief 1958' are extremely different. “I felt fortunate that he was a character,” he said.

As he said, Lee Dong-hwi appeared as a criminal who runs an illegal online gambling house in 'Crime City 4' and played the exact opposite of Detective Kim Sang-sun in 'Investigation Team Leader 1958'. Lee Dong-hwi said of the successive successes of his films, “I try not to have any regrets about the success,” and “This is because I live a life where I don’t know what will happen next year, the next year, or tomorrow.”

"Because it's still ongoing. I worry a lot about what to do with my next work. That's the same whether the work is successful or not. I can never think that I achieved it alone. It's clear that I just have to have a grateful heart."

Chief Detective 1958: Episodes 9-10 (Final)

by lovepark

The prequel to the decades-long series comes to a boisterous finale filled with nostalgic callbacks and a strong sense of justice. From beginning to end, the show maintained its zippy pace and wacky tone. While superficial on some level, Chief Detective 1958 always portrayed itself as a more fun than serious affair, and judging on that metric, I think the drama delivered a satisfying conclusion.

EPISODES 9-10

The last two episodes of Chief Detective breaks its mold a bit by devoting both hours to one case. Foreshadowed in previous weeks, we finally delve into the four notorious scions — a group of depraved womanizers drunk on their daddies’ power. Their infamy is widespread in the police department, but their luck runs out when their debauchery catches the attention of unit one. For months, women at a factory have gone missing, and though a friend of Officer Bong reported it a while ago, unit two dismissed it as mere runaways.

As expected, the four scions are behind the disappearances, but their usual bravado means nothing in the face of our incorruptible heroes. Alas, without evidence, arrests are useless since Superintendent Baek releases them immediately. However, the case turns grave when the latest missing person is found dead at the bottom of a mountain. Signs of violence, both physical and sexual, are apparent on the victim, and all clues point towards the obvious culprits.

In hopes of finding undeniable proof of the scions’ sins, Young-han and his crew head over to their usual spot, Mokryeongak: a place where the rich and powerful rub elbows while drinking and reveling in more carnal pleasures. The owner greets them with a smile and a rehearsed lie, but when one of her employees vouches for their integrity, her tune changes. She reveals the truth about the scions’ revolting behavior and asks the detectives to fulfill her dreams of revenge.

Just as our heroes make some progress with the case, an unexpected hitch occurs. Due to Young-han’s meddling, unease spreads amongst the scions, and like all relationships built on greed and exploitation, they quickly turn on each other and vie for control. Of the four, the youngest seems out of place with his glasses and meek persona, but these are simply a mask to hide his true, twisted nature. After causing a scene with his hyungs who blame him for their predicament, Glasses orchestrates an accident to murder the others, but unfortunately for him, one of them survives the crash.

At first, Young-han assumes it was divine punishment, but it seems odd to him that the worst of the bunch was miraculously absent. When it dawns on him that Glasses is the mastermind, he realizes that the surviving member is in danger, so he places Officer Nam (one of the detectives who joins unit one later in the original series) undercover to keep an eye on their witness. The bad guys are predictable as always, but thankfully, Young-han and his team are ready when Glasses swoops in to finish the job. With some blanket rope and brute strength, Young-han crashes into the hospital room and arrests the culprit in the nick of time.

Thanks to their efforts, our heroes learn from the surviving member that Glasses is the killer, but despite nearly dying twice, he still won’t testify in court. With this, the team hits another dead end until Officer Bong comes to the rescue. Investigating on her own, she found the other missing women and set up a meeting for Young-han. Like the surviving member, the victims refuse to testify for fear of retaliation, but when they read a note from the murdered colleague’s mother, they agree to help. However, one of the victims tells Young-han that the superintendent threatened to kill her if she ever reported the incident, so our hero promises to put everyone behind bars, including his boss.

Beyond the typical bribes and blind eyes, Superintendent Baek took things too far this time by actively helping the scions dispose of the dead body in exchange for ousting the deputy director from his seat. He even covered up the crash as an accident, but his partnership with Glasses is short-lived since Superintendent Baek has no desire to fall with his bumbling accomplice. Instead, he goes directly to the dad to strike a deal, but as the saying goes, there’s no honor among thieves.

A chain reaction of backstabs leads to a shootout in the middle of a cathedral, and though the superintendent and his lackey are severely outnumbered, they easily hold back their foes. By the time unit one arrives on the scene — thanks to Officer Nam witnessing the lackey kidnap the surviving member — both sides are at a standstill. In a strange turn of events, unit two joins the fight, assisting Young-han’s team with evacuating bystanders, which allows our heroes to chase after their targets.

Sang-soon and Kyung-hwan team up to fight the lackey whom they’ve had beef with since his introduction, and with their combined effort, they manage to take him down after a few stabs and cuts. To even things out, Sang-soon bites his ear for good measure, making sure the lackey will remember the mad dog and brown bear for years to come. As for Young-han, he chases after the superintendent who takes a pregnant woman as a hostage, and the parallels between this situation and the one from his soldier days aren’t lost on either of them. Like the past, Young-han refuses to let harm befall a civilian, and the superintendent laughs at his naivety.
