Jeon Jong-seo confronts a power struggle as Queen Woo

by solstices

TVING’s first foray into sageuk brings us back to the Goguryeo era, dramatizing the tumultuous life of historical figure Queen Woo. When the king loses his life, his widow must navigate the political fallout and place a new sovereign on the throne, in order to preserve the royal lineage and protect her own power.

The teaser opens on the front lines, as the austere ruler Go Nam-mu — played by Ji Chang-wook (Welcome to Samdalri) — draws his sword. An arrow is shot, its whistle signaling the start of battle. Go Nam-mu’s troops rush forth with a rallying cry, charging valiantly into the thick of combat — and then, the slice of a blade. A helmet falls to the ground, and it’s Go Nam-mu’s. Bloody and disheveled, Go Nam-mu glances up at his attackers, but he fails to parry their swords in time. The king is dead.

Back in the palace, the titular queen Woo Hee — played by Jeon Jong-seo (Wedding Impossible) — is informed of her husband’s death. Yet this bereaved widow is afforded no time for grief. Since Go Nam-mu passed before he could sire an heir, the courtesy of mourning is instead replaced with the conflict of a power struggle. All eyes are on the throne, and those who crave it will stop at nothing to usurp it.

An impeccably polished blade. Bodies dangling from the rafters. The queen’s sister Woo Sun, played by Jung Yumi (Celebrity), wails in despair at her reflection. Conspiracies and cabals are forming within the palace walls, and their poison is concocted for none other than Woo Hee. “Don’t you think a new queen is needed?” whispers the court of ministers. After all, this is the golden opportunity for change.

A time of turbulence and danger is imminent, solidifying Woo Hee’s resolve to take the reins of her own destiny. In the next twenty-four hours, she must crown a new king — or risk losing everything and everyone she cherishes. “Now, you must protect yourself,” Go Nam-mu urges his queen. The ensuing chyron echoes his sentiment — Woo Hee must survive, on her own.

With that, Woo Hee bravely takes up the sword, stepping out of her palanquin and brandishing her blade against her attackers. Alas, even if she fends them off, there are more foes lurking within the palace. Kim Mu-yeol (No Way Out: The Roulette) cuts an imposing figure as the prime minister Eul Pa-so, who yearns for more beyond his position as the royal advisor, and it’s hard to tell whether his brows are furrowed from concern or condescension. Then there’s Lee Soo-hyuk (Tomorrow) as the vicious prince Go Bal-ki, whose repressed ambition has him thirsting for the opportunity to finally step out of his older brother’s shadow.

It seems Queen Woo may only have one person on her side — the head of the royal guard Mu Gol, played by Park Ji-hwan (Gyeongseong Creature), who pledged his loyalty to the late king. Alas, Mu Gol’s allegiance is no secret, and he finds himself faced with the tip of a blade. If Woo Hee wants to defend her position, she’ll have to rely on herself. Alone in a forest, shrouded in shadows, Woo Hee steels herself. Her life is her own to forge. “Do you wish to hear of my destiny?”

Helmed by PD Jung Se-gyo with scripts penned by Lee Byung-hak, Queen Woo is slated for an August 29 release.

Defending the throne with Jeon Jong-seo as Queen Woo

by solstices

In a flurry of arrows and clashing swords, TVING’s Goguryeo sageuk Queen Woo further unveils the intrigue of its first teaser. Chronicling the political chaos that ensues after its eponymous heroine loses her husband to war, the drama pulls no punches with its bloodthirsty power struggle.

“All of a sudden, I found myself growing curious,” Jeon Jong-seo (Wedding Impossible) muses, as the titular queen Woo Hee. “If the king were to die, who would take the throne next?” Alas, her hypothetical becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The king Go Nam-mu — played by Ji Chang-wook (Welcome to Samdalri) — perishes on the battlefield, and a devastated Woo Hee sinks to her knees by his corpse.

There’s no time to be wasted upon grieving, however. “The king’s death will soon be akin to that of the Woo clan,” says the family head, while Jung Yumi (Celebrity) furrows her brows in anxiety as the queen’s sister Woo Sun. “Is there no other path?” Woo Hee asks the prime minister Eul Pa-so, played by Kim Mu-yeol (No Way Out: The Roulette), but the grim look on his face says it all.

Owing to Go Nam-mu’s death, his younger brothers are out to stake claim on both his status and spouse. There’s the ruthless third prince Go Bal-ki, played by Lee Soo-hyuk (Tomorrow), who has no qualms resorting to violence and underhanded means. Next to him is Kang Young-seok (Welcome to Samdalri) as the fourth prince Go Yeon-woo, alongside the armor-clad fifth prince Go Gye-soo, played by Jung Jae-kwang (Connection).

“I will proceed with a levirate marriage,” Woo Hee proclaims, in a bid to maintain her status. Before the king’s death is announced the following morning, she must return with Bal-ki, but she disagrees with the plan: “I cannot entrust the throne to someone like him.” Vicious and volatile, Bal-ki has set his eyes on the crown, and he hires a fur-cloaked mercenary to hunt Woo Hee down.

They aren’t the only ones in pursuit of her, however. Many seek to have the queen in the palm of their hands, scheming to corner her with breakneck chases and brutal ambushes. As her late husband once advised, it’s time for Woo Hee to protect herself. She must survive, with any means necessary. Her allies aren’t spared from the onslaught, either, and Eul Pa-so fends off his attackers with a dagger in hand. Elsewhere, Woo Hee draws her bowstring: “Now, I shall show you what I’m capable of.”

Helmed by PD Jung Se-gyo, alongside scriptwriter Lee Byung-hak, Queen Woo will release Part 1 of its narrative on August 29, with Part 2 coming September 12.

4 Reasons To Look Forward To New Historical Action Drama "Queen Woo"

TVING’s upcoming historical drama “Queen Woo” has shared key reasons to look forward to its premiere!

“Queen Woo” is a historical action drama that follows the story of Queen Woo, who becomes the target of five tribes seeking to gain authority and princes who are after the throne following the sudden passing of the king.

Here are four reasons to tune in to the new drama:

Dramatic transformations by Jeon Jong Seo, Kim Moo Yeol, Jung Yu Mi, Lee Soo Hyuk, Park Ji Hwan, and Ji Chang Wook

“Queen Woo” has been garnering attention for its star-studded cast lineup. Jeon Jong Seo, who is starring in her first historical drama, plays Queen Woo Hee, while Kim Moo Yeol stars as Eul Pa So, the skilled and resourceful prime minister of Goguryeo. Jung Yu Mi plays Woo Hee’s ambitious and two-faced older sister Woo Sun, while Lee Soo Hyuk adds tension to the battle for the throne as Go Bal Gi. Park Ji Hwan brings charisma to his role as the dependable warrior Moo Gol, and Ji Chang Wook plays the benevolent yet courageous King Go Nam Moo. Together, these actors promise a powerful synergy.

Director Jung Se Kyo shared, “I was eager to see how the actors would bring their characters to life within the drama. It was important to have thorough discussions beforehand and let them explore their roles within the given situations to fully develop their characters.” He added, “As you watch the show, I hope you’ll appreciate the thought and effort the actors put into shaping their characters.”

Queen Woo Hee’s remarriage

“Queen Woo” centers around Queen Woo Hee’s decision to follow the tradition of “chisuhon” (levirate marriage), in which a widow marries her deceased husband’s brother in order to remain queen. After the king’s death, Queen Woo leaves the palace to personally select and crown the next king, ensuring she retains her title. The drama highlights the intense 24 hours she spends defending her position, portraying her as a strong and independent woman.

Director Jung Se Kyo explained, “I found it fascinating when I read about Queen Woo, who didn’t just stay within the palace but went out to choose her own future. I wanted to bring this story to life in a drama.” He continued, “I want to show a queen who selects the king with her own hands and crowns him—something we’ve never seen before.”

A gripping, suspenseful historical drama with intense chase and action scenes

“Queen Woo” is an action drama that follows Queen Woo Hee as she searches for a new king after the previous one’s death, all while being pursued by various tribes and princes vying for the throne. Set within a tight 24-hour window, the drama promises fast-paced storytelling and thrilling chase scenes.

Director Jung Se Kyo commented, “We used quick editing to create a sense of urgency and paid special attention to the music and sound mixing. Each tribe has its unique tone and style, which will enhance the visual experience for viewers.” He added, “There are action scenes unlike any that have been seen before in our country, so I hope you look forward to them.”

The intense battle for the throne

In the drama, Queen Woo Hee decides to marry her late husband’s brother to protect what matters most to her after the sudden death of King Go Nam Moo throws the nation into turmoil. She becomes embroiled in the battle for the throne and faces off against the king’s four brothers, including the ruthless third prince Go Bal Gi. With the future of her family and the nation at stake, making the right choice is more critical than ever. The drama focuses on whether Woo Hee can successfully elude the tribes chasing her, find the next king, and continue the line of power during that fateful night.

Director Jung Se Kyo teased, “Please focus on two main aspects: the investigation into the king’s death within the palace and whether Woo Hee can safely return to the palace after marrying the king’s brother outside the palace.”

“Queen Woo” is set to premiere on August 29.
