Jeon Hye-jin and Sooyoung are a chaotic duo in Not Others

by solstices

A second teaser, a new poster, and more stills for a drama centered around a mother-daughter pair? I’m all ears. Adapted from a webtoon of the same name, ENA’s upcoming drama Not Others (previously Strangers) already looks like it’ll strike a perfect balance of heartwarming comedy.

Jeon Hye-jin (Uncle) stars as the single mother Eun-mi, who bore a child when she was still in high school. Having never married, the independent Eun-mi raised her daughter all on her own. Now, she’s a physiotherapist with a vibrant vivacity that far surpasses her age.

Meanwhile, her daughter Jin-hee has a completely opposite personality. Played by Soo-young (Please Send a Fan Letter), Jin-hee is as cool as a cucumber; her calm and collected demeanor makes for an amusing contrast to Eun-mi.

Right off the bat, it’s clear that mother and daughter hold a lot of affection for each other. Jin-hee fondly describes her mother’s childish ways as endearing rather than immature, and Eun-mi proudly declares that Jin-hee is totally a filial daughter. Worried that her daughter may feel lonely, Eun-mi tries to play matchmaker; for the same reason, Jin-hee prefers to stay with her mother, helping out with the household chores.

However, their relationship isn’t just a bed of roses, since living under the same roof means that they inevitably butt heads from time to time. Fed up with her mother’s nagging, Jin-hee winds up shouting at her — except the young-at-heart Jin-hee yells right back, hah. Having had enough of each other’s antics, the teaser ends with the two ladies slamming their bedroom doors shut and declaring that they’d rather be strangers.

In case you can’t get enough of The Glory alums, Not Others will take over Lies Hidden in My Garden’s timeslot with Park Sung-hoon in tow. Playing the police chief Jae-won, he’ll find himself shaken up by Jin-hee in more ways than one. Ahn Jae-wook (The Empire) rounds out our main cast as Jin-hong, an ENT specialist who mysteriously appears in Eun-mi’s life one day. Ooh, is mom getting her own romance too? I can’t wait to see mother and daughter meddle in each other’s love lives — I’m sure the result will be nothing short of entertaining.

Directed by PD Lee Min-woo (Cinderella and the Four Knights) with scripts written by Min Sun-ae, Not Others premieres on July 17.

Upcoming drama “Strangers” (literal translation) has dropped a new teaser!

Based on a popular webtoon, “Strangers” is a comedy drama that tells the delightful cohabitation story of a clumsy mother and her coolheaded daughter. Jeon Hye Jin will star as Eun Mi, a bubbly physical therapist and single mother with a 29-year-old daughter. Sooyoung will play Eun Mi’s daughter Jin Hee, a police station patrol team leader who urgently needs to crack down on her mother rather than on her cases.

The newly released teaser kicks off with Jin Hee’s narration, “My mom gave birth to me when she was in high school.” When Eun Mi asks Jin Hee to go clubbing together, Jin Hee coldly replies, “Mom, you will get cut off at the entrance. You can’t even get in.” The text that reads, “Immature mother and coolheaded daughter’s bumpy cohabitation,” appears on screen, foreshadowing their comedic mother-and-daughter moments.

The clip then previews the first encounter between Jin Hee and police director Jae Won (Park Sung Hoon) at work. Jae Won warns Jin Hee, “If you talk back to me, you will die.” Jin Hee replies to him without a flinch, “I will try my best to talk back for the next one year. Please look forward to it.” The text that reads, “Their dating and love,” appears on the screen and hints at the two men—mysterious otolaryngologist Jin Hong (Ahn Jae Wook) and Jae Won—getting entangled with Eun Mi’s and Jin Hee’s lives.

Jeon Hye Jin, Sooyoung, Park Sung Hoon, And Ahn Jae Wook Are Unexpectedly Intertwined In Upcoming Comedy Drama “Not Others”

Jul 10, 2023
by S. Kim

Upcoming ENA drama “Not Others” has dropped new posters featuring the four main characters!

Based on a popular webtoon, “Not Others” is a comedy drama that tells the delightful cohabitation story of a clumsy mother and her coolheaded daughter.

First of all, Kim Eun Mi exudes a strong aura that comes from her head lifted high and confident facial expression. The text that reads, “Immature mother who has a daughter but is not yet married,” suggests that Kim Eun Mi is an extraordinary mother character.

Not-Others-01.jpeg

Police station patrol team leader Kim Jin Hee exudes a charismatic and confident atmosphere. Like mother, like daughter, Jin Hee’s daring personality resembles that of her mother Eun Mi. The text that reads, “The guardian, butler, and friend of her immature mother,” suggests the strong bond and unique chemistry between the two.

Not-Others-02.jpeg

The poster of Eun Jae Won (Park Sung Hoon), who is Jin Hee’s senior from the police academy and current police director, captures attention. Jae Won’s gaze appears to be sharp and cold, but he has a somewhat sad facial expression, raising viewers’ curiosity. The text that reads, “Police director who is rough on the outside, soft on the inside,” hints at his sweet and salty personality.

Not-Others-03.jpeg

Last but not least, the bright smile of Park Jin Hong (Ahn Jae Wook), a mysterious man who appears in front of Eun Mi one day, captivates viewers’ attention. The text that reads, “Mom’s new boyfriend? A principled otolaryngology specialist,” previews that he will meet Eun Mi at the age of 48 and fall in love with her, raising viewers’ anticipation for their story.

Jeon Hye Jin, Sooyoung, Ahn Jae Wook, And Park Sung Hoon Share Insight Into Their Characters In “Not Others”

Jul 12, 2023
by S. Nam

The cast of ENA’s upcoming drama “Not Others” has talked about their characters ahead of the upcoming premiere!

Based on a popular webtoon, “Not Others” is a comedy drama that tells the delightful cohabitation story of a clumsy mother and her coolheaded daughter.

On her character Eun Mi, Jeon Hye Jin shared, “Eun Mi is unchanging, and she’s a person who is the same inside and out. She’s a refreshing character with bubbly charm as well as purity and cheerfulness that are difficult for the average person to maintain.”

Sooyoung remarked, “Jin Hee, who Eun Mi had in high school, is a cool and awesome character.” On how similar she is to Jin Hee, Sooyoung remarked, “I think it is at least 90 percent. The remaining 10 percent that is different is that I am much kinder to my family than Jin Hee.”

Ahn Jae Wook, who takes on the role of otolaryngologist Park Jin Hong, shared, “Jin Hong is an upright and affectionate person. He has his own routine when it comes to carrying out his daily routine, and I think that aspect is similar to myself when I’m working on a project.”

Park Sung Hoon, who plays police director Eun Jae Won, remarked, “Although he seems cold and uncaring on the outside, he is more considerate and warmhearted than anyone. He is a character in which the way each word he seemingly tosses out without a care is charming.” He added, “The way he likes sundaeguk (Korean blood sausage soup) and soju is also very similar to me.”

Not-Others-.jpeg

Sooyoung explained, “Before meeting through this project, I was a huge fan of Jeon Hye Jin. To meet a senior actor I respect and like as [my on-screen] mom and to be able to act together felt like a big fortune to me.” Jeon Hye Jin shared, “Sooyoung and I work really well together, so I could be comfortable when acting with her. She is an actress who is always overflowing with energy and gives you good vibes.” Together, they added that they didn’t know time was passing on set when talking and laughing together, raising further anticipation for their chemistry.

Genie TV's original series Not Others, which premieres on the 17th, depicts the lively life of a house filled with the energy of a mother and daughter, like strangers, and their blossoming love. Let's examine some interesting points that make Not Others even more enjoyable.

1. Breaking the Clichés: A New Mother-Daughter Story

Not Others portrays the realistic dynamics of family relationships, often characterized as "wanting to be the other person but unable to." This drama delves into the stories of mothers and daughters that haven't been easily accessible in the domestic drama scene, exploring aspects that were often hesitant to be openly discussed in daily life.

Firstly, the mother character, Kim Eun Mi, differs from the typical tear-jerking, overly protective mother figures. Instead, she leads her life and protects her own life with a strong sense of autonomy. Rather than being an overprotective "helicopter mom" or a "kangaroo mom," she can be described as a "free-range mom."

Growing up under such an independent mother, Kim Jin Hee also possesses a unique personality. Kim Jin Hee has been both a guardian of her extraordinary mother and a housekeeper, sometimes even taking on the role of a husband. However, now she desires to establish a proper distance between herself and her mother.

The mother-daughter relationship in Not Others may be less tender and affectionate than typical stories of love overflowing with emotion. Nevertheless, their candid conversations will resonate deeply in our hearts. The drama brings us the most sincere dialogues, the honest and warm humor we wanted to speak and hear in our lives in 2023, and presents a true mother-daughter story filled with audacity.

3 Reasons To Tune In To Tonight’s Premiere Of “Not Others”

3 Reasons To Tune In To Tonight’s Premiere Of “Not Others”

Jul 17, 2023

Upcoming comedy drama “Not Others ” has got viewers anticipating its premiere!

Based on a popular webtoon, “Not Others” is a comedy drama that tells the delightful cohabitation story of a clumsy mother and her coolheaded daughter.

With the drama’s first episode airing tonight, here are three things to keep an eye out for in the upcoming premiere:

A mother-daughter relationship that has never been seen before

Viewers can look forward to the realistic depiction of a modern family. Unlike other drama mother characters that showcase deep maternal love, Kim Jin Hee’s mother Kim Eun Mi lives worrying only about herself. This resulted in Kim Jin Hee, who has been living as the guardian, butler, and friend of her immature mother, wanting to keep a reasonable distance from her mother. While the relationship between Eun Mi and her daughter isn’t exactly overflowing with love and affection, their story is expected to resonate deeply with viewers.

The great synergy between the cast members

Another reason to look forward to “Not Others” is the synergy between its cast members including trusted actors Jeon Hye Jin, Sooyoung, Ahn Jae Wook, and Park Sung Hoon.

Jeon Hye Jin is expected to perfectly portray the character of Kim Eun Mi with her passionate performance and unique charisma, while Choi Soo Young will perfectly immerse into the character of Kim Jin Hee with her bold and cool energy.

Ahn Jae Wook, who plays otolaryngologist Park Jin Hong will add fun to the drama by portraying a thrilling romance with Jeon Hye Jin, while Park Sung Hoon, who plays police director Eun Jae Won will perfectly portray the romance between his character and Sooyoung’s character Kim Jin Hee.

The highly anticipated drama adaptation of a popular webtoon

Having accumulated over 25 million views and won Today’s Our Manhwa Award (Korea’s leading comic award), the original webtoon has a solid fan base. As such, many fans of the webtoon are looking forward to the drama adaptation. Even before the drama’s premiere, there has been a lot of discussions about the drama on various online communities with people sharing how much they are looking forward to the drama adaptation “Not Others.”

Premiere Watch: Not Others

by missvictrix

NISI20230717_0001317296_web.jpg?rnd=2023

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: ENA
Genre: Comedy, family, slice-of-life
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: It’s fun to see a mother-daughter comedy, as they’re not exactly a dramaland staple. Like so many dramas these days, Not Others is the adaptation of an acclaimed webtoon, this time about a haphazard and wild mother (Jeon Hye-jin) and her sensible and cool-headed daughter (Sooyoung) who’s often left cleaning up her mother’s messes. Or, you know, having to deal with the abject embarrassment it seems like her mother frequently causes her. The drama looks like it’ll be a riot for sure, but don’t worry, there is also romance in the cards, with Park Sung-hoon and Ahn Jae-wook finally playing good guys again. Our PD last worked on Cinderella and the Four Knights, and though that may cause a little alarm in the hearts of those who didn’t enjoy that drama, a little lawful chaos might be just what Not Others needs to shine

TL;DR: Mother-daughter comedy with a side of mayhem, embarrassment, and romance (the doodles in the drama’s poster tell us everything we need to know)

Just finished ep. 1.  I'm surprised that one of the subjects received approval from the moral and decency police.  Wow, I want to see the store where mother and daughter went shopping.:o:lol:

Although, the editing of ep 1 did leave a lot to be desired. (Frankly, it was a mess.)  There was one part that looked like it was a scrap, fròm the segment after the director yelled, Cut!  It should have been left on the editing room floor.

As expected, the female leads are wonderful, and totally on target for their respective  role.  Can't say much about the male leads.  We haven't  even seen one of them.  And, we only had a few short scenes of the second male lead.

This drama should be a fun ride.

So far enjoying the mom/daughter, sisters of the soul story, laughing heartily at daughter's discovery of mom's not so secret sensual side and their later shopping for "toys". Continuity is a bit choppy, cop male lead is a bit way too grim arrogant for my taste , so far.... ( i wonder if streamers ordering less episodes than KDrama has been used to, plays a role) but I look forward to the ladies adventures.
