[Mainland Chinese Drama 2017-2018] Nirvana in Fire: The Wind Blows in Changlin 琅琊榜之凤起长林

I wouldn't say that LX was unpatriotic... to be honest... I don't know what LX thought about such matters because the two of them never really talked about such things. Except as an independent, professional female, there's no doubt that she was pretty much underdeveloped as a character.

Let's face it, the writer wanted the story to end a certain way ie. with PJ riding off with LX into freedom from responsibilities and the burdens of carrying on the family spirit so LX was practically her mouthpiece for that. I'm also inclined to think that the writer wanted so much for YQ not to be a cooker cutter villain that just about almost everyone left standing alive in that last 10 or so episode suffered from a lack of development.

I have to say too that I didn't miss Pingzhang all that much once PJ went to the border and started doing interesting things there. That's the PJ I wanted more of but sadly didn't get that much of. Even his solar eclipse battle with Yu didn't last all that long. On top of that his confrontation with YQ was far too short.

Don't know if they ran out of money or if there are labour laws in China regarding how many hours actors under the age of 21 are allowed to work each day/week but I wanted much more PJ than what I got.

Still, whatever the flaws of this drama... and I'm sure we can pick it to pieces till the cows come home...  it is undoubtedly still one of the best.

The latest BTS of our gravely wounded Grand Commander:

The initial script was to just have him left leaning at the side of the palace walls, but Zhang Bo requested to have a more dramatic footnote, with him vomiting blood and collapsing, the result of which was a trailer just before the finale that truly distressed me to think that he too, died in the end. Pfft!

I watched both. Actually both have their own charm, but the Korean version suffered from lack of episodes number. I hate the ending of both though. Even until today, I cannot really sympathize with the female lead. I recommend for you to watch both.

Nirvana in Fire's villains 谢玉 Xie Yu (Liu Yijun) and 夏江 Xia Jiang (Wang Yongquan, who plays Master Li of Jifeng Hall, and is also executive director of NiF2) had a reunion during a winter hot pot meal on set of the second drama.

For me, the Chinese version Bu Bu Jing Xin or Scarlet Heart with Liu Shi Shi and Nicky Wu will always be the definitive version, and the most faithful to the book. As I mentioned before, that was one of three dramas that drove me to buy its corresponding novel. Just be prepared emotionally. The Korean version is well adapted into the Goryeo period from the source material, but editing was a a major issue (do watch the SBS version which is far better than its international counterpart), and pacing was also a problem as they tried to cover too much in too little time towards the end. However, performances are strong and the conclusion just as devastating. You might want to watch both and compare :)

Whatever you do, please don't bother with Scarlet Heart Season 2, which was just a poor excuse to ride on the coattails of the original's success with most of the original cast, but without a strong script to back it up. While there is a happy ending, the journey there is littered with ridiculous makjang that for me, it is totally a waste of time. Just my opinion of course.

As of yesterday, Nirvana in Fire 2 surpassed 2.6 billion views, with the finale only airing for non-VIP iQiYi viewers this coming Monday. Congratulations!

I agree with @liddi about scarlet heart season 2. It is a disaster. I watched it, kind of, and decided to erase it from my computer afterwards. It is that bad ..... I pretend that drama doesn't exist. It is just like horribly written fanfiction instead of sequel.

@liddi

Thank you for translating the documentary for us. It makes me smile hearing Sun Chun comment about LHR and PJ. I am agree with him. I don't know whether it is the character, actor, or both, but PJ just inspired affection. I really wish we get a flashback or something about his childhood.

I have been lurking in here for awhile. I'm still behind most you who are done watching it. (Ep 36)

Just here to say how much I love the serie and venting a little bit.

The most annoying character to me is the empress ..She just makes me angry. So dumb..

I'm missing PZ ! His wife is so cool.

Oh how wise is TS ! Love him

Poor ZS and PJ !

Forever mistaken and treated unfairly: the changlin manor/family.

FZ got to be my favorite at the moment. He is such a noble character.

The secretary is saying "a person's heart will not change". What about his ? He is so worried about an uncertain future that he does dumb richard simmons.

Hi everyone. Long time lurker, avid fan. I didn't intend to create an account just to comment on this show but I just can't. Thanks for all the BTS, the insights, the translations and the links. They definitely helped me made it through the agonizing wait for the subbed episodes. I've already watched the raw version of ep 49-50 and although I don't understand Chinese, I can understand how the story ended. I just want to share my two cents on 2 issues/topics, I feel strongly about.

On LX: Some admire her for her independence while others think of her as selfish. I find her relatable because I'm somewhat like her. There were many instances I refused to change my choices/lifestyle because of a man. Some have pointed out that she could have compromised with PJ but that wouldn't be true to her character. This is a girl whose mother's dying advice is to never marry a soldier. She had seen how her mother suffer because of her father's death. As a doctor, she has probably witnessed too many soldiers dying and when she was in the capital, she witnessed firsthand how the corruption in the court can cause havoc in everyone's life including even the powerful ones such as PJ's family. So yes, I do understand why she would chose not to subject herself to the possible heartbreak. I also think that perhaps, it's not that she doesn't want PJ to become the Prince of Changlin once more but I think she's more averse to the idea of him or them living in the capital with all it's dirty machinations and corruptions.

On PJ's decision to become an herb picker. Haha. I actually loved this description. He has matured yes and he has shown that he is more than capable of leading the Changlin army but going back to the capital to serve the king would mean that he has to obey the many constricting rules/formalities and I don't really see him being able to do that. He might be loyal but I'm pretty sure at some point, he'll break some rule and again this would be used against him. Let's say Yuanshi will always trust and  favour him, history would just repeat itself. He has the Langya connection, so no matter where he and LX maybe, he will always be updated on what's going on and he can always go back and save the day if needed. Also have you seen the last shot of him riding into the sunset with LX, if nothing else, that shot of him, smiling, happy convinced me that he made the right decision.

I just finished this series..I skipped a bunch of chapters because some parts were a bit long and "boring" to me...more so the beginning had too many screen time with the villain who made the pellet for poisoining ping zheng..

But I had a few questions...who is that older all white haired lang ya bong leader in relation to the first nirvana in fire?

When did Pingzhang destroy the necklace...was it not till last few episodes he finally realized he like linxu?  or was it before his brother died?  I thought he didn't realize he like her until after his father died and he went up to langya mountain for those 2-3 years and he finally let go his guilt and missed her.

@El Lieu Hi there! Welcome to the thread.

To answer your questions:

1. The Master of Langya Hall is Lin Chen, Mei Changsu's friend who tried so hard to keep him alive.

2. Pingjing did not destroy the silver locket. He merely stopped wearing it just before he went to the Northern frontier in Ep30, after Tingsheng, who noticed him still wearing it, told him he need not wear it anymore, and that he trusts every decision Pingjing makes, be it regarding Changlin army or his heart.

Oh wow then the Lin Chen character lived that long...whereas everyone around him passed away...mei changsu and the king then (wang kai's character died so early on and so his son )

Oh so in episode 30 Pingjing finally realized he liked Linxu...because he was so clueless to her feelings and thought of her as a good friend..

I did like how they linked old meichang su home to the underground of pingzhing's home...that is where mei changsu used to meet the prince...
