I'm still behind by 13 pages...trying to catch up but my head is swimming.

 

All I know is I am AMAZED...just downright thankful for LJG's acting when bursting in to Jung's house and taking HS's ashes. I knew he would deliver in a scene like that but just /sigh...amazing. He deserves every recognition just for that scene alone.

I'm still not sure how I am feeling about the ending...I know its open ended and maybe they did that on purpose...but everything is just playing over and over again in my head. I need to fully watch again and digest everything properly.

Is not that I was expecting a lovey dovey ending, after have to endure the dead of half of the Stark, Hodor, and the dire wolves in GOT, the dead of baby Faith and the separation of Claire and Jamie in Outlander, and what happened to Glen in TWD, I'm more than prepared to tragic stories, but in MLSHR's case I need a proper explanation of the closure of HS and WS story, it doesn't matter if they didn't meet in the future, after all this is from the Chinese version not from the novel as I read, but there were so many hints in their promises and the lyrics of songs from the OST that makes think what was beyong the gaze of Wang So at the end, it is as if something important had happened after that moment, was cut and the editor decided that was better goes to the scene of the piggy back.

Agree and it's open ended enough to find closure regarding their love, them as individuals and what it was all about. 

1) Their love was beautiful and that's how it should be remembered. The last scene is their enduring signature: she, piggy-backed by him, both in perfect bliss. Fact is, all loves come to an end, it's just when.

2) They have become better persons...stronger...

i) WS can face the world with his scar now - self acceptance, check. He is wiser as he comprehends the futility of power; many people with great achievements have reached this point too. And it's not like he is broken. He is still the same driven man, now training his sights on inventing the time machine... That one will take a lifetime so he won't be bored...;p

- HS/GHJ is living her life well enough. Either her ex boyfriend and ex best friend's betrayal did not happen or she recovered from it. If it's the former, history did change perhaps because she became a better judge of character after all that palace intrigue. If latter, she has become resilient. What didn't change and has always been defining for her is her instinctive, first reaction to think about others. When her memories came back, she did not mop over how he did not come to see her while she was breathing her last instead she was sorry for not being there for him. Kind of like how she was so concerned about WS while bloodied and half alive in the prison (that's one of my favourites scenes by the way).

3) Finally, they contributed to the advancement of Korea! HS' influence helped GJ shaped a more egalitarian society. And of course, gave Korea a head-start in beauty products...

Sooo...all in all, it was a good journey. Thank you to Soompi forummers too for you are part of it as well.

As I was crazy about this MDBC, that was the drama I followed most intensely. Having said that, because they broadcasted it here on OneHD at the same time as Korea, it was a weekly watch drama with my sister (sisterly kdrama bonding. LOL!). For me, I started out watching it because I loved LJG (I had high expectations and tracked it more intensely than on MDBC prior to screening.) but later, even though I continued to watch it....I really pitied the actors especially towards the end. The first episodes were watchable and I really enjoyed it!!! .......but towards the end it just went a bit haywire where some of the characters became so.....inconsistent....and the poor scene editing definitely played against the story. The saddest thing is though, the story had potential. Think of what a better director and with a tighter script and better editing could have accomplished....sigh PD-nim you really.....I am going to be really be more careful about touching this writer and PD's works in the future....

I am repeating before I get slobbered. I am not slating the drama in any way. I just wished that it had the opportunity to shine more which I believe it could have in the hands of a better production group. Sigh....so sad

Unlike the others, I like the ending and I feel relieved  now that the drama has ended. Thanks everyone for sharing this unique moment. Bless you all and maybe next time with an another drama but I doubt that I'll find another one that I'd like as much as MLSHR.

Ep20 was heartbreaking but ultimately, it was also bittersweet... and I am satisfied. Love how they tied back to history... alluding to Baek Ah's future affair with Wook's daughter, explained here as being so reminiscent of Woo Hee; Queen Hwangbo plotting to make Wook's son king, as payback to Yeon Hwa for her betrayal; So and Soo's daughter... which appears to explain why in the end, the two blood siblings mended their relationship, because he respected Soo's wishes not to bring their daughter into the palace, yet wanted to be able to see more of her. And the freeing of slaves and state examinations... done in memory of Soo. 

The cruel irony of having Soo finally regaining her memories... knowing that she was well and truly alone in the future, no longer able to change anything... the realisation that he became exactly what she had hoped to avert. Love the open ending despite (or exactly because of) the poignancy of it all... which closes on two people whose love transcends time, but is just as cruelly separated by its very fabric. And drawings upon drawings of all that she remembered and was a part of in Goryeo... I cannot help but imagine that that was So's doing... leaving behind as much evidence as he could of her, of them together, and her 10 years there... so that she would remember him... remember them.

*group hugs* Woahhh, I am amazed at myself for being able to repeat the entire Scarlet Heart ordeal for the third time. First time was the book, followed by the C-drama. And then, woahhh, I decided that as if being heartbroken twice was not enough, I had to endure a third time and this time with Le Joon Ki. In hindsight, how much so I hated that his acting was beyond perfect!!! With an ending like this, I secretly wished his acting would have been awful, so that I would not ache for him. But no........

Anyhow, I think there is a logical reasoning behind the 'open' ending. To be honest, I don't think it is an open one. It was pretty clear that he stayed where he was (sorry to anyone being hopeful), and she stayed in the modern time. Someone above commented that such situation was the karma for their respective wrongdoings. I cannot agree more and plus, more importantly, in history, Gwangjong went on to reign for another 25 years before his death. It could be that the KCC / SBS was wary of changing the course of history given how closely they have been able to follow historical facts. In all seriousness, the other Moon drama has amended history but I think the scriptwriters in Scarlet had decided to stay true to its course.

So that sucks, yeah. For me, it sucks even more as I purposely did not read up on history before following. I wish I had...

It's been a roller coaster feelings for the past 2 months. Not to mention months before that, when people starting jokes about Teletubbies clothes from Goryeo era. I have invested sooo much for this drama: time, energy, emotions, even data bandwith. The truth: I don't like the ending! I think the ending wasted So-Soo's moment. They should be priorities. I'm sorry if i have to rant, but hey, one can make an opinion right? 

Okay now lets talk about the great thing about this drama:

- Cast

Casting Lee Joon Gi as Wang So was a perfect decision this drama production team has made. He IS indeed WANG SO and GWANGJONG. He brought Wang So's character develop. From eps 1 to eps 20 my opinion is this drama is Wang So centric. It tells story about Wang So becoming king of Goryeo and the history after that. Lee Joon gi will always be remembered as Wang So. I think his next character from his next drama has to fill Wang So’s shoes. Wang So’s character was already marked in LJG’s image. Perhaps he should wait another year or two to play in another character. Being his fans from 2008, I think MLSHR is his prime. He is at his best as an actor.

Lee Ji Eun as Hae Soo is also spot on! She looks similar to Ruoxi at c-version. She brought Hae Soo cheerfulness, modern vibe, and the mature Hae Soo from the last episodes look so real. She IS Hae Soo. I can't even imagine other actress playing Hae Soo. Lee Ji Eun should be acknowledge as an actress, not just an idol. I think she will be this next big thing.  

Lee Joon Gi and Lee Ji Eun chemistry was perfect. I watched LJG and LJE dramas. And in MLSHR their chemistry is believable. I just hope their on screen scenes were shown a lot more.

The princes. I want to praise Kang Ha Neul acting. He played Wang Wook really well. I think he will be those actor who will be big in the future. Especially he does a lot of musical. The next big thing is Nam Joo Hyuk. He is a scene stealer as Baek Ah (and yes, he is beautiful just like Baek Ah). Well, YG entertainment should be proud with his achievement. He grows a lot as an actor. Ji Soo? At first episodes I think Ji soo acting was a little bit annoying. But he as Jung at the last episodes was blowing me away. Baekhyun acting was okay. But Eun’s death scene was memorable. I cried a bucket. Yoon Sun Woo as Wang Won, well I hate Wang Won, but I want to see Yoon Sun Woo in modern drama (I think he is cute). The last but not least is our Wang Yo. Hong Jong Hyun will always be the spiteful Yo with his guyliner. He should pick modern rom com as his next project (perhaps with YuRa Girlsday, hihihi)

Woo Hee Jin as lady Oh, Park Shi Eun as Lady Hae, Park Ji Young as Queen Yoo, Zo Min Ki as King Taejo, they were veteran actor and actress, so their acting were undoubtful.

Seohyun as Woo Hee, I think if she practice a lot more, she could be a second female lead, not just supporting character. But as Woo Hee, I think she is okay. I like Seohyun as Woo Hee’s first scene: fierce. Kang Hanna as Yeon Hwa, I hate yeon hwa. So that means she success with her acting right? She makes me believe that Yeon Hwa is a snake!! haha. Z-Hera as Park Soon Dok is also okay. I think She should pick another sageuk drama.

The point is, all the casts were choose perfectly. Their on screen interactions are great. No wonder because their off screen interactions were also great.

- The Cinematography

This drama’s motion picture is BEAUTIFUL!!! I think someone mention that some scenes were edited with effects so they will look so beautiful. But still, I think this drama is soo beautiful. The camera angle are sometimes shown too much close up. But, I think other scenes are shown beautifully. Espcly when it shows landscapes, etc.

- The Costumes

I love sageuk dramas. But this drama shows Sageuk Drama’s costumes on another level. Because, the costumes are so detailed. Look at the fabric, the pattern, the design. All fit perfectly for the cast. I think they hire a really good costume designer.

- The OST

I don’t have complaint about the OST. Even the rap part from some of the songs are acceptable. After all this is fusion-sageuk drama right? So, the Music Director should compose music scoring with traditional and modern vibe. It is shown in some of the scenes. Such as fighting with monks scene. Too bad, that particular scene’s scoring was not include at the Various Artist OST.

And another one. What so great about this drama is it drew us viewers here at this Soompi Thread. I am thankful for being a part of this community. We discussed, we analyze, we debate, we wrote essays, we share something that we never share before. And the great thing is, this thread is full of positivities. That’s why I don’t want to lurk to another blog, forums, etc. Because it makes me feel bad for watching MLSHR. Despite our busy times, I’m sure many of this thread’s member, would spend time in this thread so we can waiting for the newest comments, or waiting for the newest still pictures, or updates about MLSHR. And also, I think I learn so much about Korean Drama, Korea history, Chinese letter/character and its meaning, even astronomy from this thread. And with that I am grateful. I just hope we can share and discuss something on another drama. Thank you for Moderators, recapers, the posters. and all members for making this thread alive.

This drama has its flaws (many flaws), but this drama will be one of K-Drama that leaves bittersweet trace yet very memorable in my mind and heart.

I'm currently impeded by many emotions to form a coherent and articulate response but I will say this, the poignant scene of WS staring in the camera whilst his desolation and loneliness recedes just enough to give the viewer a glimpse of his relentless determination and conviction to find his Soo in the next life was so gratifying.

I truly dislike ambiguous endings but I felt a personal comunication between WS and anyone watching; the sun and moon always meet again during an eclipse. It is inevitable he will find her again.  The beauty of their love was transient but I think we as the audience shall remember it for a long time, just like GHJ.

Secondly..for me..I won't have any expectations on season 2 or special episode for this drama..until it really happens..it hurts so much when all my expectations got ruined.

Yes to this. I'm fine with open endings in movies. I was fine with the spinning top at the end of Inception. They went through all the trouble of setting up hints and clues for the first 18 episodes and then just abruptly ended it. Can we start a petition for all the raw footage to be released?

@sooji28  This is supposed to be his last Saguek as he said he wanted to move on into other areas of filming I've watch all of his Sagueks from the king and the clown,Iljimae Joseon Guman to scholar who walks the night and these are some of my personal favorites. I must admit I have never been disappointed in any of his Saguek roles.. But as he said he's ready to spread his wings and take on more adult roles this drama is perfect for that transistion.. I would love to see a the second season with him still being cast as the lead as him and Hs barks on a new journey in the modern world..  With different names and a more nodern love for this day and time sort of like 1% of anything..  

I now see the very reason they choose him as Wang So he fit that bill and really brought Wang So character to life.. I'm really happy I finally got to see him play a King.. I never seen him play a Crown Prince.. 

I think if they ever did a remake of Yi San I elect LJK as CP YI San

Oh, I had a question:

What do people think of Jung not telling So he had a daughter?

I mean, Soo never said not to tell So, did she?

Would there have been a way for So to know of his daughter and not bring her into the palace per Soo's last wishes?

I think part of Jung's reasons for not telling So was selfishness. As in, So got Soo's everything: Soo loved So, Soo gave birth to Soo's child. Jung got nothing of Soo but this child that was the last piece of her. I figure he wanted to keep the child to himself as her mother never was his.

I would think the other part would be because he believed, without a doubt, that So would never let Soo's child get away from him and would probably bring her into the palace anyway. But then, in this episode, So appears to abide by Soo's wishes about the palace so this reasoning falls flat for me. Of course, how would Jung even begin to know how So feels about Soo's wishes?

I'm just confused about why So was never told about the child when we can see that Soo's wishes would likely have been carried out anyway.

So I just finished the last episode raw, and I actually like it ? Like I am not THAT mad. HS has redeemed herself completely for me, but I really wished they made us understand her earlier, like give us her reaction when she finds out she has a child, give us some signs, don't  just drop the pregnancy card on us like that. I basically bawled my eyes out in the first half hour, the way HS kept imagining WS in front of her, smiling at her, and then dying waiting for him thinking he hated her, that was so sad. And then when WS found out and read her letter ? Tears didn't stop, I wanted to see more of it actually, to see him regretting thinking she never loved him. Anyway I'm just glad she left him a piece if her, the very proof that they both loved each other deeply ( I guess we totally got our answer that they did sleep together, hahahahhahahahahahhah)

ultimately, WS is such a tragic character, anything he wants gets snatched away from him in such a cruel way, freezing his heart more and more, the image of him all alone in that place spoke soooo much, he was king, but he was ultimately alone, and more than that, he was remembered as a cruel king, talk about being unfortunate. 

The last scene made me break into tears all over again, HS ( errr , GHJ) she is also made to suffer after remembering all her life in goryeo, the way she was apologizing to WS for leaving broke my heart. At the end of the day, our OTP was just never made to be together, but they will always love each other and will look for one another no matter what time they're in.

I just finished watching it and cried buckets. For a sad and bittersweet ending I liked it, much better than the C-version.  The acting was top notch and this is one time I liked the flash backs to happier times. I am also glad that she remembered and was sorry for leaving him alone.  HOWEVER, NOW I WANT THE SPECIAL EPISODE OR A SECOND SEASON !!!!  PLEASE SBS and PDnim !!!

the first time they slept together was when she found him to heal his wound, thats now a fact, its obvious, but from that time until she left the palace mustve been a few years? 2 atleast? so if she was like 2 months preg when she left the palace, they were probably doing it constantly while she was there  who says their relationship was that strained after all eh?
