LOL you two!  Thanks for the laugh this morning, since I've been a blubbering mess ever since 2:01pm KST today.   I'm a Navy Brat myself, so I know the meaning of 'ya gotta go when ya gotta go.'  And Wook had to go; if he didn't opt in for active duty service, the Korean public would be all over him like flies on stink for the rest of his life.  He's a smart cookie.  :D

Some material edited out.

I'm sure lots more will come out in the next few days.  Stay tuned!   *sobs*

@cherkell No problem ~ comic relief no extra charge.  Cry it out, Girl.  Offers giant box of Kleenex.  You have more than earned the right.  To me you are Soompi ROYALTY! You have built a relationship with, and seemingly single-handedly, a fan base for a very talented man.  That requires some major work in time and emotion, and from what I've read over the years, a personal relationship with a star doesn't happen very often, if at all.  Plus, there is this military angle to the equation.  Nothing is more emotion inducing than these call-ups, even without the war drums.  I am an Air Force brat and living now in the quiet backwaters of Florida, I miss the thunder of jets, even Navy ones.

I spoke too soon when I said Ji Chang Wook seemed to be taking it well because then I viewed your Kitchen photos of him on enlistment day.  If ever there were  more graphic pictures of the renowned English "stiff upper lip" Ji Chang Wook would take first prize.  He salutes well, too; already perfect form.

Thank you dears for all the updates, especially our captain @cherkellssi. You've worked hard. *salutinglikewook*

It's just been a couple months for me, but I feel like I've become his fan for so long, considering the pang his enlistment created in the corner of my heart. Like sending my own brother to army feeling. Wishing him the best service and always healthy until the day he'll be discharged.

Like Wook said, it's not goodbye but "see you later"

Even when he smiled, you could see the sadness in his eyes..

I cry today, the moment when I open Instagram and see full of his pictures in the shirt "Why so serious?"

In the past, I cried a lot for Ta Hwan, for K2, for Kwon Yoo, for Seo Jung Hoo but this is the first time I cry for JCW because I miss him.

Wishing him all the best and lucky. I'm a bit worried about the war in Korea, but I believe he will be healthy during this 1 year 9 months. I'll pray for him.

I feel empty. I really hope he would come back soon to act on new project. He is a really talented actor. From 2019, I can follow him without any concerning about the word "enlistment".

At least he said that he will leave a message on DayRock after 100 days. First I will wait for that. And of course waiting for his look in military uniform. I'm sure he would look great as always (or even more

I feel sad & bad seeing him go - having that new military hairstyle. I wish him the best during his service, though!:(

Hey Willenette!  I saw you here, too, and was glad you were here to lend support.  You and I better be careful, though.  If we appear on too many different sites we'll get branded as cheap, floozy camp followers:wub:!  And it is sad and bad seeing him go.  Bittersweet.  Coming from a military family myself, I know that feeling you get when duty calls your family or loved one. You just suck it up and smile.  Everyone here today, so far seems to be handling it well.  Even Ji Chang Wook himself.  What a mensch, opting for the combat unit.

Hi MyStars, in Korea, men are obliged to go under a physical examination once they turn 19 by the Military Manpower Administration, which determines their physical fitness level, or grade, for military service. In physical examination, the check-up involves tests of psychological and physical health, while the administrative process assigns new entrants to different posts, based on their backgrounds and preferences. This is done before enlistment. After a few hours, the men are divided into five different categories, in order of fitness: active duty, reserve duty, secondary reserves, eligible conscription status and secondary conscription status.  Enlisting military men who are dubbed Level 1 thru 3 will usually go through active enlistment, which I'm sure JCW was on this Level range.

Some initial reports from the scene:

1.  The van was late in arriving due to weather issues and traffic along the way; hence, the sprint from the parking lot to the gates for the quick press bomb was necessary.

2.  He arrived with his mum, Manager Bang, hyung Kangwoo, the Glorious Entertainment president, and his two trusty bodyguards (we've nicknamed them over the years Ahjusshi 1 and Ahjusshi 2).

3.  For those who were wondering "that was a QUIET arrival?", that's pretty much as quiet as someone of his level in the entertainment world gets.  At least he quickly acknowledged the fans and press.  It's not like Wook to stiff everyone like that.

4.  The 3rd Infantry is not set up for a drive-through-the-gates situation anyway, like other basic training camps are arranged.  It's the 3rd, full of Mucho Manly Men -- everyone walks in under their own power, no matter what.

I'm sure lots more will come out in the next few days.  Stay tuned!   *sobs*

Hi cherkell, thanks for sharing some tidbits from the scene yesterday.....

[News] Ji Chang Wook places 3rd in August male advertising model brand reputation index

vlcsnap-2017-08-15-10h52m35s725.jpg?w=60

Did you think there would be no more news of Ji Chang Wook after he left for the Army yesterday? Ji Chang Wook has emerged in third place on the male advertising model brand reputation ranking for the month of August! Congrats!

jcwaugust2.jpg?w=600

A Korean research institute analysed 21,166,611 pieces of data of 50 male models for the period between 13 July 2017 to 14 August 2017.  Just like the previous actor reputation analyses, the ranking was based on factors such as the level of brand engagement with consumers, media mentions and mentions on social media.

For the month of August, actors Song Joong Ki and Gong Yoo ranked first and second respectively, while Ji Chang Wook came in third with 383,506 points for brand engagement, 31,456 points for communication, 813,386 points on the community index and a total of 1,228,349 points for brand reputation.

jcwaugust2017.jpg?w=600

Other male stars on the top 30 list included the likes of Yoo Jae Suk, Park Seo Joon, Kim Soo Hyun, Park Bo Gum, Lee Min Ho, G-Dragon, Kang Ha Neul and more.

Congratulations again to Ji Chang Wook! May he continue to chalk up accolades even in the Army!

Documentary film about training camp of the 3rd Infantry. (aka Baek Gol(=White skull) troops.) The training program is all the same in any camp, but the 3rd is in the high mountain & freezing area, will be a little bit more tough. But It seems some guys prefer the 3rd. The white skull emblem is a kind of symbol of manliness.

Aug.5 Cheol Won city festival stage. Actor Joo Won sang. I was there to meet my family serving at the 3rd Infantry.
JW is serving as an instructor in training camp. Maybe JCW will be trained under JW. Next year, I hope to see JCW too in this festival.

Joo Won had fan signing event too.

Thank you for sharing your videos!  Highly unlikely for Joo Won to be Wook's instructor since they both are stationed in different units at the 3rd Infantry (there's no cross-mingling).  They may see each other in the mess hall for meals, but even there the soldiers are separated according to divisions, units, and ranks.  But definitely we should see Wook at the Cheorwon Festival in 2018!

Hi Trung Vu, the countdown begins...... because 2019 seems a long way away...Seeing him go is breaking my heart at its finest. And he’s the 1st that I know of who even documented how he got that shaved hair. Wahhh.........HIS HAIR IS GONE! I hope he has a fantastic time away from the spotlight.  Although, it's going to feel a bit empty in K-dramaland without him...Wish him all the best during his enlistment. Stay safe & good luck, JCW! May he return safely. I wish him a safe two years. I'll be waiting for your comeback. I am going to miss him big time. JCW fighting! God bless you! :(

*** He wore a T-shirt that reads “Why so serious?” as if to assure fans that he will be back soon, and to tell them not to be upset. How will fans endure the almost two-year separation from their celebrity idols who are inside the military? A K-drama marathon should do the trick! Watching the dramas just makes you feel much closer to them. So, we'll do this for JCW -

I missed him so much already.  @cherkell  any ideas are postcards/letters allowed to be send to him?  You know how in the movies the prisoners/soldiers etc are always waiting for letters from home/gfs/fans hahahaha

Korean fans can send 'internet letters' (letters that are typed into a special portal as @saturn noted above, which are then printed out on paper and handed to the recruit to read on his rest time), but only if they can provide an SSN or i-Pin number showing they are Korean nationals.  International fans have many more hoops to jump through, especially since it may take 2-3 weeks for a letter to make it all the way to Cheorwon (and Wook is only there for a total of 5 weeks).  There are ways to send correspondence, but remember that your letters will be opened by base personnel and scanned as acceptable (i.e., in Korean) to be forwarded over to the recruit.  Sending "care packages" of gifts and food is not permitted under any circumstances whilst he still is in basic training.

Personally, I won't be sending any correspondence to Wook, and here's my reasons:  No doubt about it, he's going to be inundated with letters from all his fans (at least the ones that make it through to him).  But what about the other recruits in his unit that will not be getting bags of letters like Wook will?  They may see only 1 or 2 during their basic training days and even into their active duty service, and they may get jealous or hold it against him as a late-enlisting recruit/older hyung.  Wook has stated several times that he doesn't want to be treated any differently than any other recruit during his time in the service.  (But you can still send letters to Glorious and they will eventually pass them along at their first opportunity.)

I've discussed this very issue with several of my friends on the ground there, and his Korean fans are of the same mind that we should just wait and test the waters after his first 100 days of boot camp.  As always, you may think differently than I do about whether or not to send letters to Wook.  I thought it would be good to present the 'local point of view' when it comes to such a subject.  YMMV.  :D

@cherkell   Thank you so much for your advise.  I definitely do not want to cause any trouble to my dear Wookie.  As mentioned, I will send my regards to Wookie via Glorious office.  I have previously send some mangas/comics & souvenirs to him via Glorious but am never sure whether he receives it or not.  I just hope the office staff doesn't throw them away :)

What he doesn't take home personally is kept at the Glorious offices; nothing is thrown away.  On my last visit there a year ago, there's 2 rooms set up for the gifts that pour in from all over the world.  The only item I think they've stopped accepting are stuffed animals.  Since Wook receives so many, I read somewhere they're being donated to children's hospitals or other charitable outfits.  And I bet if you sent him comic books, they're more than likely been put to good use prior to his enlistment.

8 Korean Male Artists Who Still Look Strikingly Handsome With Their Military Haircut

idols-with-military-haircut.png?resize=6

With their short hairstyle, they couldn’t style like long hair. But somehow, their short haircut still shines brightly in our hearts.

It is noticed that there have been cases when Korean artists are criticized due to their untidy hair, tired face or old-fashioned style in public. However, these eight Korean male stars prove that they are still as attractive and dashing as always, even with their military crew haircut.

1. Ji Chang Wook

On August 12, Ji Chang Wook uploaded a video of him on Instagram, shaving his head to prepare for his coming military enlistment. The 29-second clip immediately went viral on the social network.

With the short haircut, Ji’s new appearance gave fans a big surprise. The actor seems not to lose his attractive inherent facial features, which by contrast, now looks more masculine.

@willenette Hello, and thanks for all the information, but I am not sure what you are telling me.  You bolded and put in red one thing that I said:

"What a mensch, opting for the combat unit. "

and then added the complete  enlistment procedure.  I am not sure if you are telling me that he had NO choice, or agreeing that he did have a choice and made a darn good one In the enlistment information you included was the statement that new entrants are assigned different posts based on their backgrounds and preferences.  When you get a chance, let me know which is right. Personally, I think you are agreeing with me.:D No?

UPDATE:  Because there's been so many half-truths and absolutely incorrect information shared on various social media platforms, The Kitchen feels the need to set the record straight, and we are currently drafting a post on how international fans can send letters to Ji Chang Wook.  The disclaimer noted above still stands; please take into consideration his feelings and the feelings of his fellow recruits by not spamming him with thousands of letters he may not have the chance to read.  He's there to serve his country; not to please his fans by responding to each and every piece of mail he receives.

More to follow soon!

Hi MyStars, what I meant was : all enlisters have no choice whether they go for active-duty or just a public service personnel because of this physical examination once they turn 19, which is an obligatory in Korea. They're only allowed to choose their own enlistment dates and their preferred military units before starting life in barracks. The length of service varies depending on the military branch: 21 months for Army and Marines, 23 months for Navy, 24 months for Air Force. The non-active duty service, e.g. civil service or public service worker, is from 24 months to 36 months. Athletes who win medals at the Olympic Games or gold medals at the Asian Games are granted exemptions but still have to serve four-five weeks in basic training. As an active-duty-soldier, I just hope JCW won't be assigned at the front line where RAIN had been assigned to during his MS days.

[Tutorial] Sending letters to Ji Chang Wook in the army

enlist1a.jpg?w=600

Surely many of us are already missing Ji Chang Wook and wondering how we can communicate with him since he won’t be logging into his social media accounts in the army. Fret not, for you are still able to contact him the traditional way — by writing a letter!

The South Korean army allows recruits to receive letters from people outside the army. After undergoing intensive training and sweating it out under the sun everyday, a letter is considered the best kind of gift for soldiers!

To send Ji Chang Wook a letter, you can write to the following address:

강원도 철원군 서면 금강로 7628
사서함 107-17-1호 백골신병교육대대 971기
지창욱 훈련병
(우) 24062

This is the address translated in English:

It is best that you write your letter in Korean so that he can read it easily. Imagine having to decipher stacks of letters written in a foreign language after exerting all your strength on training in the day!  He may be able to read a bit of Hanyu Pinyin, but not Chinese characters.  We cannot ascertain his standard of English, but he is definitely not able to read anything too difficult, so only write in short simple English if you have to.

Please do not make use of Google Translate to translate your letter into Korean because the result is often incomprehensible. You should either get a Korean friend to translate for you, or make use of a proper translation service such as Flitto.  (Please take note that Flitto is a paid service.)

Due to the sheer number of readers we have (and since we are not native Korean speakers), it will not be possible for either of us admins to do translations for you.

Some other points you should take note of:

  1. It is advisable that you write the address in both English and Korean so that your local postman and the Korean postman are able to read it.
  2. This address will only be valid until the end of his basic training, which is 21 September 2017. He may be deployed elsewhere after this date. Please take into account the amount of time your letter will take to reach Korea and make sure that your letter reaches there before 21 September.
  3. Please be considerate and do not overwhelm him with too many letters. He will also be receiving hundreds of letters from other fans and he may not have time to read every single letter.  (As mentioned above, Wook is stationed in Cheorwon to serve his country first.  Any distractions may reflect badly upon him to his fellow solders.)

Go ahead and pen your words of love and encouragement to Ji Chang Wook!
