@gerrytan8063 LOL you are so correct, it seems like half of the Korean people I went to school with had the surname Kim...I was just trying to think logically why he might literally be letting her get away with murder (other than he's painted himself into a corner so to speak).

It will be the same when Injo lets Jo Gwi In (his favourite Consort) goes after Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang clan, feature in the drama Cruel Palace - War of the Flowers

So the royal physician may be called to attend anyone the king thinks important such as Hwa Yi and Joo Won in this drama. I thought only the royal family may be attended by the royal physician. ( If so, the king might have exposed Hwa Yi's identity. )

Alright guys, finished this week's episodes last night.

The story moved at a really fast pace and things escalated quickly.

Though I guess Gyosan had what was coming to him, I will miss that actor, he was great.

We are now 20 episodes in, 30 more to go for this wonderful drama.

I hope the cast members stay healthy throughout and wish them the best.

Im sorry if this was discussed, was the poison that was given to the princess only effective for males?

She knew something was up, and still drank it all.

Hahah I was just murmuring to myself dont drink it...while watching.

@mangekyux She didn't drink it.  She knew when he said the medicine was for male virility that the Royal Doctor did not prescribe it and that it was more than likely poison so she switched it out. After she drank the tea she brought the poison tea out from behind her and asked who had him try to kill her.

In drama, Yi San asked the Royal Physician to see Seong Seon Yeon after she return from China, almost half dead. Sukjong had the Royal Physician comes to examine Choi Dong Yi after her return from Uiju & seeing that she lost a lot of weight.

King do asked their Royal Physician to do "house call"

The gift of fish that is tied in a string is called a Gulbi (굴비 - Dried Yellow Corvina). Gulbi is a kind of preserved food as fish are prone to spoilage, so in order to preserve them, the jogi (yellow corvina) are salted & dried, turning them into gulbi. Traditionally, gulbi are sold in a unique way; they are tied in chains of ten to dry, & two strings of gulbi are tied together & sold as the standard unit: han dureum, in which it means you get 20 fishes. This curing of fish is famous in Yeonggwang (영광) District in Jeollanam-do province. It is still an expensive product & consequently a popular gift for Chuseok & Seollal.

If you think that Kim Gae Shi & Yi Yi Cheom goes on a "killing spree" on Gwanghaegun relative/threat, Injo personally did his that surpasses even them put together

Injo kills his Crown Prince Sohyeon (possible of filicide as it was condone in Confucian moral standard in the case of a disobedient son).

Injo resentment toward his Crown Prince Sohyeon family especially the Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang was exacerbate by his favourite Consort Jo Gwi In (Injo version of Kim Gae Shi)

Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang was sentence to death by poison on falsified charges that she attempt to poison Injo in his food

Injo almost exterminated Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang family

Injo sent her 4 brothers to exile then later execute Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang mother & her 2 brothers & choose to eliminate Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang's 3 sons with Crown Prince Sohyeon (Injo own grandsons), first through exile later sentence to death by poison, only the youngest son manage to survive the ordeal

When reading Injo reign.....you only have factional politics, intrusion of domestic political consideration into military strategies (2 Manchu Invasion, Yi Gwal uprising), a disastrous adoption of a hostile foreign policies towards the Manchu, just when the Manchu was at the height of they "might" (really asking for trouble),

Injo to be bestowed "In" (仁  which means benevolence) to his temple name is really indeed a joke

wooww each king had their story how eachbof them reign Korea is sad that some of them had the killed their own family to get to the throne. ... but this have and happen in most of the countries of the world with kings, presidents, etc to gain power...

Im curious to know if when king Injo gets to the throne we will see some the story of all these characters of his family...

It is said that the character Jo Gwi In had been cast, while for Crown Prince Sohyeon & Crown Princess Minhoe of Gang clan in which Princess Jeongmyeong will render her support to them (seen in the Correlation Chart), had not been casted

"Im sorry if this was discussed, was the poison that was given to the princess only effective for males?"

The poison for put in the medicine tonic perscription, the Blue Physician Yoon claim Hwa Yi suffered from the seven impairments (Chilsang, 칠상,七傷) & the tonic will rejuvenate "his" vitality & energy, giving Princess Jeongmyeong the suspicion that Physician Yoon was not sent by the Royal Physician as she clearly knows that the Royal Physician already have knowledge of her gender while Physician Yoon still made reference to her as a Man. Princess Jeongmyeong pretend to drink but in the end shown to Physician Yoon that the tonic was not drunk. Princess Jeongmyeong tells Physician Yoon that her ailment was not what he had mentioned, especially that "seven impairment" (Chilsang, 칠상) is when men suffered exhaustion & fatigue (Heoseon,虛損)) to their physic (신기) only the ailment will arise therefore the Royal Physician who know her gender will never prescribe this kind of tonic

It is an oriental term "seven impairment" (Chilsang, 칠상,七傷) indicate to adverse effects on one's body as a result of: overheating (spleen), anger (liver), moisture (kidney), cold (lung), worry (heart), wind & rain (outer appearance) & fear (mind)

Under Dongui Bogam (東醫寶鑑) authored by Heo Jun (1613)

Heoseon (虛損) is consumption; deficiency syndrome; disease due to asthenia of the viscera, in western medical term is malaise &  fatigue

The most likely tonic that was brew for Princess Jeongmyeong will be Samgigeonjungtang (蔘芪健中湯) a prescription for the treatment of anorexia, lassitude on the four limbs, and lack of Gi due to deficiency syndrome.

For those who are interested in Korea, there is a English quarterly magazine "Koreana", it is a great read magazine & nice pictorial

Here is an article in page 65

http://issuu.com/the_korea_foundation/docs/2012_koreana_spring_english

In this article, an American lady Karen Kim who is the 14th descendant daughter in law (jongbu - Mistress/Matriarch of the Household, wife to the eldest son of the clan) to Kim Je Nam. She is married to Kim Il Ju who is the 14th direct descendant from Kim Je Nam (Queen Dowager Inmok's father)

Remember Kim Je Nam daughter in law only known by her surname Jeong (정씨,鄭氏,1575 -1640) & grandson Kim Cheonseok (김천석,金天錫 1604-1673) exile to Jeju-do in 1613 then return "gladly alive" in 1623 prosper in posterity

Wow, the korean netizen keeps bashing..

@Lunkera, that would explain to me the relative low ratings. I would have thought this drama ratings should be far higher than they actually are. At least past 15%!

I was late watching this week's episodes, and I must say they are still fascinating to me except for the budding romance that seems to get more and more air time, and I kinda not liking that. I would have, had it been with one of the other 2 young men, but totally not shipping this couple

@gerrytan8063 thank you so much for all illuminations and insights.

I remember the first time I saw that kind of dismemberment was in Hwang Jin-Yi drama and I thought how cruel it was. Now you have enlightened as to the reason behind it.

@SMP567 thank you for all that you provide here.

I am getting pretty curious to know if in history Gwanghae was able to defeat Kang Joo-Sun.

I have to say BTW, his wife seems like a perfect mate for him. That scene when he kills the man in their living room, and she comes in and just tells the servant to clean it up, without batting an eye-lash was very telling, and also horrifying in the context of the time.

@gerrytan8063, wow.. they actually have a Dae Jang Geum cookbook? Amazing to me what has been so wonderfully preserved.

I remember reading this article with accompanying video about Umsik Dimibang  which they say is Korea's oldest cookbook?

The recipes in the book were handed down and then written in 1670 by Lady Jang Gye Hang, who lived in the northern Gyeongsang province. She was the wife of Lee Shi Myung - a scholar during the Joseon era and the founder of Seokgye Lee clan

@SMP567  I got myself "The Kimchi Cookbook," I like it quite a bit.

@gerrytan8063,    If Heo Gyun was part of the treason effort of 1613, that means that at that time he had aligned himself with Dowager Queen Inmok. I wonder what made him change his mind..

Also, why do you think there was not so much public outcry about King Injo's killings? hmmm. Maybe we should wait for that part in the drama later on..

Kim Je Nam (김제남,金悌男) Monument Stone/Steele (신도비) in Wonju-si, Gangwon-do Province erected in 1624

497a9096bd8a0[1]

497a906f32d30[1]

Tomb Monument of Kim Je Nam (Gangwon-do Cultural Property Material No. 21) - translation is given on the right side of the notice board

A Sindobi is a tombstone honouring civil servant of merit or famous Confucian scholars. It was usually erected at the southeast of the tomb

Kim Je Nam was a Civil Minister during middle part of the Joseon Dynasty period, his family originate from Yeonan & his pseudonym was Gongeon

In 1602, the 2nd Queen (Inmok) of Seonjo appointed him Buwongun of Yeonheung. In 1613 Yi Yi Cheom entrapped him on a charge of having plotted (treason) against Gwanghaegun in favour of his grandson Grand Prince Yeongchang (son of Queen Inmok). He was sentence to death by posion. In 1616, his body was posthumous execution (Bo Gwan Cham Si,부관참시,剖棺斬屍) where his body is exhumed from the grave & cut to pieces

Posthumous execution ((Bo Gwan Cham Si,부관참시,剖棺斬屍) is a ritual or ceremonial mutilation of the decease as a punishment in believing that they will never able to gain an afterlife. This is the reason why Queen Dowager Inmok immense hatred for Gwanghaegun

In 1623, the new King - Injo posthumously reinstate Kim Je Nam. Behind the shrine lies a tomb. The writing on the sindobi were compose in the jeonseoche style & inscription was written by Kim Sang Yeong
