Six movies to look out for in 2023

 

Despite the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, cinema admissions last year were weaker than expected. A total of 986.3 million tickets were sold in the January-November period of 2022, up 89.3 percent from a year earlier. However, the figure remained below half (48.3 percent) of the pre-pandemic level (2019) due to a lack of mega-hit films.

Studios latched on to blockbusters including the sequels to "The Outlaws," "Roaring Currents" and "Avatar" to attract audiences back to theaters. Many of the films conceived and shot during the pandemic have been subject to repeated delays as cinemas saw a big drop in overall attendance.

While 2023 still looks somewhat grim, in terms of reaching pre-pandemic attendance levels, there is still room for cautious optimism. Here are six movies to look out for this year, ranging from intense thrillers to sweet romance films.

 

 

'Wonderland'
Directed by Kim Tae-yong, the sci-fi fantasy film tells the story of a virtual world called "Wonderland." It is a place for people to experience a simulated reunion with a person they cannot meet again by using artificial intelligence. The film's star-studded cast includes Bae Suzy, Choi Woo-shik, Jung Yu-mi, Park Bo-gum, and the filmmaker's wife, Tang Wei.

High school student Sung Duk Sun (Hyeri) remains close with her childhood friends and neighbors throughout her young life. They are her extended family, and Kim Jung Hwan (Ryu Jun Yeol), Sung Sun Woo (Go Kyung Pyo), Ryu Dong Ryong (Lee Dong Hwi), and Choi Taek (Park Bo Gum) are four of her best friends growing up. The friend group comprises of a soccer enthusiast, a model student, the cultured nerd, and an expert go player, respectively. They all have fun and make lasting memories in high school together. An interesting element in the drama is that Sung Duk Sun’s future husband, who is a member of the friend group, remains a mystery until the end of the series.

 

This show is double the family love! Although each character in Sung Duk Sun’s friend group has their own family, the link between the five friends forms its own unique family all by itself. The fact that the teenage neighbors live near each other and grow up together allows the group to be like close siblings at times. The teens’ guardians also become the best of friend, sharing secrets as well as the good and bad times together.

With such a big cast it's no surprise the VIP attendance was also expansive with Park Bogum, Lee Jun Ki and many others showing up to support this movie. Bogum attended the premiere of Phantom to support Park So Dam. Name the sweetest actors in the K-drama world and there's no other than Bogum. He has many friends in the industry.
