The casting of JYJ member Park Yoo Chun in upcoming movie ‘Seafog’ (production by Director Bong Jun Ho) is one strongly recommended by Director Shim Song Bo.

On the afternoon of 27 Aug, Director Bong Jun Ho said when he met with the interview team at a Seoul Gangnam restaurant, “Right from the beginning, Director Shim Song Bo wanted Park Yoo Chun to appear in ‘Seafog’”.

Since a long time ago I have wanted to write a few words, at last I have some free time today, voicing out my opinion on the movie “Sea Fog” while having the fan made poster to support my topic. 

After experiencing that period of happiness after the news of his casting was released, I have started this topic without having much consideration.   Although there were a lot of objections against his choice, Park YuChun is still standing firmly on his own ground regarding his decision.  Why did the production side choose YuChun? And why did YuChun choose “Sea Fog”? Pondering from these two angles, there are still a lot of details worth thinking over.  The former can be from the perspective of YuChun’s appearance and acting skills and I believe the latter can be discussed from the perspective of distinctive feature of the character, the production team, etc.

The purpose of opening this topic is also because I wanted to talk about my own opinion on these perspectives.  Of course they are just some of my humble thoughts; please do not mock me for that. 

To be able to be chosen by the director to act in this movie, the choice in itself is the proof of YuChun’s solid acting skills.  That is why he is an idol worth waiting for, as long as his fans are able to resist the loneliness, just like their idol.  Being able to resist the loneliness, there will surely be a time for that glimmer of hope at the end of the dark tunnel.

Every time bowing down his head and leaning forward, it actually represents a new take off and a new starting point, jumping and running towards a new goal.   We have no idea on the procedure of the casting of “Sea Fog” but what we can imagine is that there were stiff competitions among the contenders for the character.  Going through the news that was out after that, the character “Dong Shik” was set to be acted by young actors born after 1985.  Friends who have been watching Korean dramas will understand that there are a lot of emerging actors born after 1985.  Their appearance and acting skills are incomparable among each other.  Of course, from the perspective of fans, we will surely say that YuChun is the best.

However, leaving aside our viewpoint as fans, in all fairness, the number of actors who are equally matched with YuChun is not a small figure at all.  We can actually imagine the intensity during the audition for Dong Shik.  Yet YuChun was able to outlast other contenders and obtain this character smoothly.  It can be seen that his extraordinary acting skills not only suits the character of Dong Shik, but it is the result of being the lead actors of four dramas at different levels.

The old saying goes: “To be well prepared is the key to success; you work hard ten years for your one minute perfect performance on stage.”  However, YuChun has only debuted for three years as an actor.  Three years ago, he walked into this unfamiliar industry as a rookie, learning diligently and modestly, greedily absorbing every little bit the knowledge of acting like a sponge.  Garang who is refined like a precious jade, became unbeatable.  The outer appearance of a noble man combining with Liang Shan Bo (from the Butterfly Lovers a.k.a. Chinese equivalent of Romeo and Juliet), brings out the character that has the most personal traits of a scholar.  His arrogance and unyielding character but not losing his flexibility…. having his own principle but not losing his approachable side…. his smile left a lot of females going speechless, letting their future being mislead after meeting males like him.  That was a beautiful starting point, the increasing ratings against all odds and the non-stop emerging of good reviews, plus the acknowledgements from each prestigious ceremony.

All these were the best paybacks in return of his sweats. The following three pieces of work brought his acting skills to a new high level.   Born in the year of 86, with the age limit of military service getting closer, YuChun already has four dramas in his pockets, achieving brilliant results not only in rating but also in overseas ratings.  But the question of how to upgrade himself to a new level, should be the critical issue he is facing.  If the four famous dramas were considered as his effort to accumulate his work piece, then before the half time whistle blows for his military service, he really needs a solid change to strengthen his position as an actor.

The silence of these six months, I believed that he was waiting and choosing until the arrival of the character that is able to connect with his soul.  YuChun said before that he will consider acting in big screen after 30 years old but the chance that Sea Fog provides him has made him started his journey in Korean movie earlier.  The truth is I am very curious, what are the charms of the script of Sea Fog he was holding, able to make him change his previous plan?  What kind of script was that, having such big of attraction? 

As of today, the information about Sea Fog is very little. The information we know are the following:

1. A story of stowaways.

2. In a confined space, the struggle for survival related to the ordeal and exploration on humanity.

3. An “end of the world” love which does not have a future.

4. The battle between rational and sentiments. (The Captain and Dong Shik)

Any friends who are able to find out more information about the movie, kindly add in.

 Using these few information, we are able to explore perspective one by one. 

One: The story of stowaways

The story of stowaways is a popular genre for a movie but also a sensitive topic as it will involve a lot of aspects related to profit and benefits of certain group of people.  That is why the challenge of this subject is also a challenge to the director and scriptwriter. Considering the core factor of a movie, that is the existence of the conflicting forces, the topic of stowaways is able to bring out the conflicting situations distinctively.

 Firstly is the conflict between stowaways and smugglers. Secondly is the conflict between smuggling syndicate and authority ,and lastly the conflict between the crews of the ship and the stowaways.  On the second group of conflict situations, the authorities always have the upper hand. During the procedures of battling out their wits and strength between the whole smuggling syndicate and the authority, a plot of events can be developed.

 In the syndicate of smuggling, the smuggler is the head of the group. He not only has to be a person with strong abilities to decide and take action, but also a merciless person.  The stowaways are also not as simple normal refugees. In reality those who are brave enough to take this kind of risk, they are not that simple. Of course we cannot exclude that group of human who were forced to do this by nature.  The crew members of the ship are in the neutral position among the smuggling syndicate. With the condition of not affecting their own benefit, facing the strong hold of the marine camp, they just need to complete their task of delivering.  I believe that when Sea Fog is revealed, this few groups of conflicts are unavoidable.

 Next, let us go through the character that YuChun is going to portray – the crew member Dong Shik who is in his twenties.  We can imagine that the young crew members who are growing up under the blue sky and along the blue sea, having muscular bodies, suntanned skin, a handsome face but does not lose its strength.  If the crew members are pure hearted, then they have no direct contact with females before or have not touched the opposite sex virtually.

Of course it can be comprehended as have not met a girl that moved their hearts yet. It seems that audience will easily fall into such character.  In the setting of the movie, Dong Shik begins his new voyage. As a crew member of the ship, he can keep his distance by not having any connections with the stowaways. The smuggler is their middle man.  However, what we can see is there is an obvious love line between Dong Shik and Hong Mae. 

However, what we can see is there is an obvious love line between Dong Shik and Hong Mae. Then the necessary scene of the movie should be the relationship of both of them. It should involve a string of small events.  This is up to the skills of the director and screenwriter to maneuver the plot. This will be very much anticipated.  Right now, we are able to imagine the pureness in Dong Shik’s eyes, full of love when staring at the woman he loves.

 Looking at this, the character of Dong Shik does not resemble any of the characters that YuChun acted before. Looking back at those characters:

The steadiness and tolerance of Garang;

The wisdom and undying love of a chaebol;

The cuteness and arrogance of the crown prince;

The brightness and optimism of Jung Woo.

We cannot say that there is exactly no resemblance. Of course Dong Shik is a bright, pure and a character with undying love to protect the woman he loves.  He might have to go up against the captain whom he once respected.  For the crew member Dong Shik, this is also an overturning of events that change his opinion towards the world.
