We would like to thank EPorsona for sharing with us the inside story of how a fan felt the first time she met her idol, up close and personal. This was written on the night after the event.

Since I can’t sleep, because of too much excitement until now, I just decided to write my account of what happened. So, here it is:

First of all, driving an hour and a half is really out of my comfort zone but for KJH, I did it! I also had to bring my son and pay him to take pictures. Lol!

I arrived at the meeting place at 2:30 pm and I met some great people. The staff was so nice because they even provided drinks for us. We first waited in the yard. At around 3pm, they told us that it might be more comfortable if we waited in the sunroom located at the second floor . When we were all gathered in the room, they told us that KJH has arrived. The once quiet room became kind of loud because we were all so excited.

He was so nice. When he entered the room, he apologized to us because of the venue. We thought that it was just fine. This is the part where I took the video:

After that, we all lined up to get his autograph. I was the first in line. I went in and told him my name. Of course that meant we had to shake hands. His hand was so soft. I presented to him the LTM DVD covers for him to sign. He started signing them and then we took pictures.

There is a story behind his hand being on my shoulders. My daughter hugged him as soon as she saw him. He laughed and hugged her back. So I said, "Can I get a hug, too?" We all laughed. He then put his hand around my shoulder while our picture was being taken. I can’t believe I said that out loud! He smelled so fresh like soap after a shower. After our turn, we had to go to the next room to give the other fans a chance. I felt shy to ask him anything. On top of that, I was still shaking. I was just in awe and I couldn’t believe that he was in front of me.

After almost everyone had their turn, I went back in to take pictures for one of my new friends in the group. He was kind enough to even take the photos himself with the fan’s cellphone. He did the same thing for me. By the way, there was one American fan that stood out. We were all Asians except for her. He was delighted to see that she enjoyed Korean dramas. She told him that she would read the subtitles to understand them, but sometimes you don’t need the subtitles because Korean actors are very expressive. She loved him in LTM & IOM. I just thought I should mention her.

We followed him downstairs and we took our group picture. I shook his hand once more to say goodbye and thank you. I therefore, held his hand twice; when we said hello and goodbye!

We would like to thank her for sharing with us the pictures of KJH and her narrative of the meeting, allowing us to vicariously experience how it was like to meet him.

Kang Ji Hwan Fan Meet-and-Greet Event
Venue: S. Bronson Ave., Los Angeles, California, USA
Date: July 29, 2013
Time: 3 pm

The meet-and-greet event took place one Monday afternoon in a neighborhood off Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles, California. The event was held in a two-story house, also a business establishment, located in a residential area on S. Bronson Ave.

The organizers asked the fans to arrive 15 to 30 minutes before the scheduled meeting. I was way too excited that I got to the venue around an hour early. I parked on the street and walked up to the venue. I rang the doorbell and asked the person who answered about the meet-and-greet event. She ushered me to the area in the back of the house but since no one was around yet. I returned to my car and waited there. I went back to the venue around 2:30pm and by that time more people have come. One of the staff members met us. The fans sat on the chairs in the gazebo while waiting for Ji Hwan’s arrival. I do not know about the rest of the fans, but I was very excited and can hardly contain that excitement.

At around 3 pm, we were escorted to the second floor of the house/business establishment as we continued to wait for Ji Hwan’s arrival. At a little past 3 pm, Ji Hwan arrived at the venue. He was wearing dark sunglasses, a pair of jeans, and a white sleeveless shirt with "FUKK" printed at the front. He has tanned a lot probably owing to the fact that they have been filming outdoors under the intense Nevada sun amidst the hot and humid California weather. He looked thinner but again that could be due to the hectic filming schedule and hot weather. He has nice muscular arms as well as body proportion. He looked exactly like he does in his movies/dramas/photos. I don’t know if anybody else did, but I stared at the mole on his nose...hahaha...looks really nice on him.

The meeting started really awkward with him saying one sentence, then followed by nervous laughters and pauses. It didn’t take long though before he was able to lead the conversation. (Please watch video taken by Eporsona).

After the introduction, the fan signing event started. All the fans were asked to move to the outer room while Ji Hwan and the rest of the staff members stayed in the inner room. A representative of the KJH USA operator acted as the translator. I was standing by the doorway so I was able to get some pictures before the fan signing commenced. Because I was blocking traffic, I asked one of the staff if I could go inside the room where Ji Hwan was so I can take better pictures. Thankfully, the staff said yes so I moved inside and was sitting about a meter away from him. To be honest, it was really nerve wracking to be that close to him but I survived JJJ...

He was very nice and accommodating to the fans. He tries to talk to the fans while he signs the autograph. He would ask fans questions, such as their favorite Ji Hwan drama/movie, which of his projects they’ve seen, if the fans watch the movie/drama with subtitles, etc. Sometimes he would ask help in reading/spelling a fan’s name which he wrote along with his autograph. He also took time to take pictures with each and every single fan that went to the event. He even took the pictures/selcas with the fans themselves. How cool was that? Towards the end of the fan signing event, the fans were taking pictures of him really up close that at one point he laughed and said something but I didn’t quite understand what he said.

The fan signing event ended a little after 4 pm. I was going to ask him to record something for the Soompi fans but he didn’t have any more time since they have to go back to the filming location to film more scenes. We went downstairs and took group pictures in front of the venue. Shortly after, Ji Hwan and his staff left the venue since they had to drive to Colorado Ave in Pasadena to resume filming at 5 pm.

Impression:

Seeing him for the first time felt surreal...like I was inside a very nice dream. My hands were sweaty and shaky that I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to take any picture. Thank goodness for the automatic feature in my camera...otherwise, all the pictures could have turned out blurry...hehehe

My impression of him is that he is really a nice person. He is very sociable and accommodating. Although the beginning of the meeting was a little awkward, he seemed genuinely pleased to meet with the fans. For someone who is popular and has a fairly huge fan base in Asia and beyond, he does not exhibit any air of superiority or "star complex". In contrast, he seemed humble and even apologetic that they weren’t able to provide a better venue for the meeting. To me, the venue was actually perfect because it was not only a nice place, but also located just approximately 2.5 miles from my house.

I am grateful to him for taking the time out of his busy schedule to meet fans in the LA area. I am even more grateful that he was the one who suggested the idea of a meet-and-greet event. How many stars would even think of doing something like that? Let’s face it; he was here in the States for a month to film a movie. With the hectic and grueling filming schedule as well as multiple location moves, I am sure he barely had time to get any proper rest for the entire month. Despite that, he smiled, took pictures, and signed autographs for fans without showing any hint or indication of how tired he must have felt at the time of the event. To me, this just shows how committed he is to the fans. This makes me root for him even more as well as wish him more success in all his future projects. I am hoping this movie will open up the gates for international recognition which he rightfully deserves.

Acknowledgement:

Big thanks to Ji Hwan for meeting with us. Thank you also to KJH USA, Choeun Entertainment, KJH staff, and everyone who made this event possible. Words alone are not enough to express how grateful I am for the opportunity to meet Ji Hwan in person.
