Korean actor Hyun Bin appears in Netflix's new film 'Maikone's Happy Meal' by Hirokazu Kore-eda, a Japanese master who directed the Korean movie 'Broker' last year, attracting attention.

'Maikone's Happy Meal' is a work that depicts the story of two friends, Kiyo (played by Cory Nana) and Sumire (played by Natsuki Deguchi), who come to Kyoto from their hometowns in Aomori in pursuit of their dream of becoming apprentice geisha 'maiko'.

Unlike Kiyo, who has a talent as a geisha, who is growing rapidly, Kiyo, who was criticized for not having any talent, accidentally discovered a talent for cooking with food presented in the kitchen and worked as a makanai in charge of meals at a maiko's dormitory.

In the first episode of 'Maikone Happy Meal', which was produced as a 9-episode series, the two faces of Chiyo (played by Matsuzaka), who is called the mother of geishas, are revealed, drawing laughter. Chiyo's mother maintains a solemn and elegant appearance in front of her geishas and maikos, but she smiles as she waves her hand at the picture of Hyun Bin hidden behind a hanging scroll in her room.

It is analyzed that this is due to the fact that the drama 'Crash Landing on You', starring Hyun Bin, became very popular by ranking first on Netflix Japan for a long time.

In addition, in the drama, the names of Korean actors such as Lee Je-hoon and Uhm Tae-woong are mentioned, giving a smile like a grain of salt.

'Maikone's Happy Meal' is a drama adapted from a manga of the same name that has sold more than 1.8 million copies in Japan. As befits the work of master director Hirokazu Kore-eda, it is well-received among domestic viewers as it oozes affection and warmth for humans.

Location in Jordan for the movie ‘Negotiation’, King’s Highway and Wadi Mujib’s outstanding scenery

At the premiere of the movie "Negotiations" (directed by Lim Soon-rye), which will be released on the 18th ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, what attracted attention was the desolate mountainside roads and mountainous scenery as much as the hostage release negotiations with the Taliban, an Afghan militant group that Hwang Jung-min, Hyun Bin, and Kang Ki-young were unraveling. was Coincidentally, on the 13th (local time), British BBC Travel caught the eye by introducing the Kings Highway and the desert plain Wadi Mujib Valley, which connected ancient cities.

In July 2007, 20 members of Saemmul Church in Bundang and 3 missionaries who were active in Miri went into Mazar in northern Afghanistan to do medical volunteer work, and were detained by the Taliban while moving to southern Kandahar. It depicts the process in which two men were killed and the remaining 21 were released after 42 days while negotiations between the Taliban and the South Korean government were at a standstill.

It would be best to shoot in Afghanistan, but the political situation was too unstable, so I chose Jordan instead. Director Lim explained, “The topography and scenery are similar, and it is the most stable and secure in Asia Minor.” Local filming started around July 2020, but the Jordanian authorities judged that Korea was exemplary in corona prevention, and permission was obtained because there were not many corona19 patients in Jordan at the time. Filming took place on location for two months and accounts for 80% of the film.

In the middle of the film, there is a scene that was filmed in Afghanistan, and director Lim said that she contacted local filmmakers to shoot and record the noise of the city.

At the beginning of the movie, it seems that the road where the bus with believers is hijacked is King's Highway. It is also known as Darb ar-Raseef, which means paved road in Arabic. It has been used as a road since the 8th century BC and is one of the longest used roads in the world. Merchants, pilgrims, warriors and kings traveled from north to south through Jordan's central highlands, and this road served as an important artery connecting the ancient kingdoms and empires.

Stretching south from Syria along the Jordan River, it effectively reveals Jordan's history, connecting important sites such as Roman ruins, Byzantine mosaics, Crusader castles and the ancient city of Petra. In the Old Testament of the Bible, it comes out as the road Moses asked permission to cross after leading the Israelites out of Egypt.

In the middle of the film, a vast desert plain unfolds behind a sandstone cliff where Hyun Bin informs Hwang Jung-min of the Taliban's release of hostages (later overturned). It appears to be the Great Rift Valley, which boasts a vast area of 292 square kilometers. The BBC reporter said that there is a 'world's smallest hotel' decorated with embroidery and other old Volkswagen Beetle cars around here, and it is so popular that King Abdullah II of Jordan visits it.

It is also thanks to this road that many tourists are looking for the majesty of Petra. Perhaps the fact that the Jordanian authorities gave permission for filming could have made it possible to attract Korean tourists.

At the end of the movie, after all the hostages were released, Hwang Jung-min tells Hyun-bin the last thing he has to say. "know? There is no one who has nowhere to return to.”  Again, if it had not been for the scenery brought up by filming in the local location, the meaning of this line would have been greatly reduced.

A shocking true story 16 years ago that even the director hesitated... Reasons for making 'Afghan Kidnap' a movie

The movie 'Negotiation' is based on the real-life Afghan abduction in 2007 , but it focuses on the story of diplomat Jae-ho (Hwang Jung-min) and NIS agent Dae-shik (Hyun Bin), who are dispatched to the country to solve the case, not the captured hostages. photo plus m entertainment

[JOONG ANG ILBO]
Diplomats and NIS agents who have to rescue Koreans kidnapped by armed forces abroad.
What kind of anguish and adversity did they carry out the operation with such a dangerous mission?

The movie 'Negotiation', which answers these questions with imagination, will be released on the 18th . The film is based on the 2007 Saemmul Church kidnapping incident that shocked the entire nation. As it is based on a dramatic true story in which 23 Korean missionaries were kidnapped by the armed group Taliban in Afghanistan, the hostages could have been featured as the main characters.

However, the film follows the story of the agents who struggled to save the hostages, not the kidnapped hostages. Director Lim Soon-rye, who released 'Negotiation' five years after 'Little Forest' ( 2018 ), said, "If you tell the stories of those who have the mission to protect the lives of our people, you will be able to make a film that is different from existing Korean films. It seemed like it,” he said, revealing his directing intention.

A still cut from the movie 'Negotiation'. Park Dae-sik, an NIS agent played by Hyun Bin, is a traumatized person who witnessed a hostage being killed right in front of his eyes. photo plus m entertainment

As the focus is on the negotiation strategy to solve the kidnapping rather than the kidnapping, the film starts by showing the scene of the kidnapping of the missionary group without hesitation. Subsequently, a South Korean government delegation, led by Jeong Jae-ho (Hwang Jung-min), a diplomat with firm convictions and principles, heads to Afghanistan, and Park Dae-sik (Hyun Bin), an NIS agent skilled in the Middle East and Central Asia, joins them there. The goal of 'rescuing the hostage' is the same, but while those who differ in methodology are in conflict, the clock on the death deadline proposed by the Taliban ticks off, and after repeated attempts at negotiations, the film rushes to the scene of the final face-to-face negotiations. .

Even 'negotiation' cannot avoid the handicap of movies based on true stories, the disadvantage of 'everyone knows the ending'. However, since it is based on a true story, the advantage of being highly immersed in the crises and emotional digging of the characters in it is clear. At the beginning of the operation, diplomat Jae-ho insists on negotiating through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, the official diplomatic channel, ignoring Dae-shik's words that "that method will not work." Jae-ho, who tries to keep the diplomat's principle of 'no direct negotiations with terrorist forces', and Gluttony, who tries to save the hostage without hesitation due to the trauma of witnessing a hostage being killed in front of his eyes. The confrontation and reconciliation between the two raises questions about the real process of resolving the kidnapping case that lasted for 40 days, 'was it really like that?

Unlike their previous images, Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin, who first worked together in the movie 'Negotiation', played a diplomat (Hwang Jung-min) who values principles and an NIS agent (Hyun Bin) who prioritizes practicality over principles, respectively. photo plus m Entertainment

Synergy between Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin, who worked together for the first time… Kang Ki-young’s presence

Actors Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin, who played the two main characters with distinct personalities, create synergy that meets expectations. According to the existing image, it seems natural for Hwang Jung-min to be in charge of rough and free gluttony and Hyun Bin to be in charge of neat and upright Jae-ho, but the casting that broke these stereotyped impressions revived the three-dimensionality of the characters. It is also interesting to note that while Hyun Bin adds dynamism to the play with action scenes that take place across motorcycles and cars, Hwang Jung-min amplifies tension only with his lines and facial expressions in the last 30 minutes of negotiations.

Kang Ki-young, who plays Kasim, who plays an active role as an interpreter, also plays a role that goes beyond licorice. Kang Ki-young, who showed a warm boss in the drama 'Strange Lawyer Woo Young-woo', made an effort to learn the two official languages of Afghanistan (Dari and Pashto) as if memorizing song lyrics in 'Negotiation' to play Kasim, who has perfectly melted into the local area. If Jae-ho and Dae-sik are ideal public servants in a way, Kasim is more realistic in that he represents the realistic perspective of ordinary people, such as being afraid of confrontation with the Taliban and resentful of the hostages.

A still cut from the movie 'Negotiation'. Scenes set in Afghanistan, which account for more than 80 % of the play, were implemented on location in Jordan. photo plus m entertainment

The scenery of Afghanistan realized through location shooting in Jordan is the main attraction that enhances the realism of the play. Departure itself was a difficult situation due to filming in the summer of 2020 when the world was locked due to Corona 19 , but it is said that he was able to enter Jordan as an exception after negotiations reminiscent of negotiations in the movie. Regarding the reason for choosing Jordan as the filming location, director Lim said, “It was the safest country in the Middle East with a similar scenery to Afghanistan. He explained, “There is also a real Afghan scene in the middle, which was filmed and inserted at the request of a local staff.”

The sensitive emotions of domestic audiences toward the actual incident that became the subject matter is a task that 'Negotiation' must overcome. Director Lim confided, “It is true that I was hesitant at first (to direct) because this case could be a sensitive subject. I wanted to talk about the state's responsibility to protect people's lives against a brutal group called the Taliban.”

'Negotiation' success rate 70% [biased Cine Review]

0000861326_001_20230114072301258.jpg?type=w430

One-sided, one-line reviews: Likes and dislikes of materials, variables.

This deal isn't bad. It followed the 'well-made' guidelines well, and it's pretty plausible. However, the variables are also not trivial. If the material feels uncomfortable, there is a high probability of failing to empathize. If you quantify the success rate of the movie 'Negotiation' (Director Lim Soon-rye), wouldn't it be around 70%?

'Negotiation' is a film depicting the negotiating strategy between a diplomat and a local NIS agent who headed to Afghanistan to save Koreans who were held hostage by the Taliban in the worst kidnapping case. Together they complete the running time of 108 minutes.

0000861326_002_20230114072301327.jpg?type=w430

Director Im Soon-rye's narration is as expected neat and clear. After setting a clear goal of 'rescuing the hostage', it gives tension and relaxation two or three times until running, and does not miss the degree of immersion. Just as he knows how to control breathing so that the audience can feel 'fun', he faithfully follows the 'formula of a technically well-made film'. Neither one pops out, and it looks straight.

Hwang Jung-min, Hyun Bin, and Kang Ki-young are also used appropriately. Hwang Jung-min pours out his acting skills as diplomat Jeong Jae-ho, who puts everything into rescuing the hostages. Hyun Bin, who plays the role of NIS agent Dae-shik, also perfectly handles the rough action as well as the emotional acting, and holds the center of the play together with Hwang Jung-min. Thanks to the stable breathing of the two people, the attraction of the movie increases even more.

Kang Ki-young, who plays the role of licorice 'Kasim', smirkingly embraces the character and is in charge of the only breathing hole in the work. She is an interpretive power that is neither too much nor too little.

Even so, it is a material with a motif of 'Saemmul Church Missionary Kidnapping Incident'. As the likes and dislikes of the related incident are still high, it is unknown how flexible the audience will accept this material. Some may not feel catharsis at all in rescuing the hostages who were trying to go all the way to Afghanistan, a restricted travel zone, and engage in missionary work. The lack of catharsis in the 'narrative of defeating evil and rescuing the weak' is a major weakness that does not ensure the success of 'negotiation'. Opening on the 18th.

[Interview ①] Director Lim Soon-rye "'Bargaining' was 10 times more expensive than 'Little Forest'.

[SPORTS CHOSUN]

Director Lim Soon-rye (63) said, "I was convinced that there was an area where I could do 'negotiation', which is 10 times more expensive and sensitive than 'Little Forest'."

Director Lim Soon-rye, who released a new film after 5 years with the crime action movie 'Negotiation' (produced by Subak Film Company) after the movie 'Little Forest' (18). He met with Sports Chosun in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul on the morning of the 16th and told the production process of 'Negotiation'.

Director Lim Soon-rye said, "Originally, I made a new film every four years and was often called the 'Olympic director', but this time, because of Corona 19, I couldn't even keep it because it was released in 5 years. At this moment, there is a point I am most worried about. I am nervous because it has been released for the first time in a while, and it is the most budgeted movie I have ever made, so there is a lot of pressure to pass the break-even point."

The reason for directing 'Negotiation' for the first time, she said, "When I first received the request, I did not feel any pressure about the size of the film. However, when I directed 'Little Forest', the budget was 1.5 billion won. ' It was when 'The Witch' came out. At that time, I wanted to make a movie that was contrary to the bloody masterpiece, so I did 'Little Forest', but the scale has grown considerably with the next film 'Negotiation'. While filming, it became larger than expected. The large part of the budget was increased because of Corona 19. And at first, I was not conscious of it, but when I made it, 'Negotiation' was 10 times more than 'Little Forest.’

She continued, "Above all, 'Negotiations' was suggested by Shin Bum-soo, CEO of Subak, a film company. I did all of 'The Whistleblower', 'Little Forest' and 'Negotiations' with CEO Shin, and the texture of all three films is different. I also had faith. And apart from budget issues, I personally tend to find out if there is something I can do in a project, but in the case of 'Little Forest', there was a part that I liked the countryside, and I could do 'Informant' or 'Negotiation'. I was convinced that there was an area that could be found. From the producer's point of view, it seems that there was trust that a director who digested 'The Whistleblower' would be able to 'negotiate' even though it is a sensitive subject."

[Interview②] Director Lim Soon-rye "There is controversy about the true story, but directing the incident itself without unnecessary controversy" ('Negotiation')

[SPORTS CHOSUN]

Director Lim Soon-rye (63) said, "I tried to make it a work that can focus on the movie itself, leaving unnecessary debates by borrowing only the bold stories from true stories."

In an interview on the morning of the 16th, director Lim Soon-rye of the crime action movie 'Negotiation' (produced by Subak, a film company), revealed the birth process and difficulties of 'Negotiation'.

Director Lim Soon-rye said about the controversial true story, "I would be lying if I said that there was no pressure after receiving the first directing offer. Since it is a large-scale film, obviously, commercial elements could not be considered, and in the meantime, the commercial part and the true story The biggest concern was how to get the center of sensitivity to 'Negotiation'. In the movie, the religious beliefs contained in the true story were not included in the film. However, there is something absolute in the Christian part and those with Taliban beliefs following the extreme. There was also a question about whether there was a question. Also, when a Korean citizen goes abroad and is in a situation where his or her life is at stake, I wanted to talk about the responsibility of the state rather than saving lives by arguing about the people's right and wrong. I think the responsibility of the state is the same as bringing my child into the house, feeding him a warm meal, and disciplining him no matter how badly he does outside. I made a movie while doing it,” he said.

She continued, “The actual case was that a large number of people, the first in our country to experience, were kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan. The part where two people lost their lives due to government negotiations, but the rest returned home safely, was brought into the movie. ‘Negotiation’ The rest of the story, for example, diplomats of negotiation experts, NIS figures, interpreters, etc., are completely fictitious. Unless the rest of the negotiation process was a documentary, I only referred to the direction of the main stream," he said. "In the actual case, the NIS "It shouldn't be exposed, but there were cases where it was exposed, and the negotiation process was disorganized. It's the first time that a large number of people have been kidnapped abroad, and they say there were parts they didn't know about the Taliban, and there were many mistakes."

She said, “Personally, of course, I think that those who went to missionary work in a country banned by the government did something wrong. If the focus was too much on that part in the movie, it would lead to other unnecessary debates. I left and tried to compose content that could focus on the movie itself. There is a double-edged aspect of the material, but it is also a material that cannot be easily handled in Korean films, and it is not a commercial subject, but it seems to be a subject that can be considered in a big way." revealed

Director Lim Soon-rye (63) said, "I wanted to show a new side of Hyun Bin, who was always beautiful, in 'Negotiation'."

Director Lim Soon-rye, who released a new film after 5 years with the crime action movie 'Negotiation' (produced by the film company Subak) after the movie 'Little Forest' (18), met with Sports Chosun in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul on the morning of the 16th. The casting process for Hyun Bin, who played the role of Park Dae-sik, an NIS agent specializing in the Middle East and Central Asia trying to rescue hostages, was revealed.

Director Lim Soon-rye said, "When people hear only the characters in our movie, Hyun Bin is more suitable for a clean diplomat and Hwang Jung-min is more suitable for a rough NIS. Of course, it's not that Hyun Bin can't play a rough role, but I thought Hwang Jung-min's energy was very focused and matched well with Jung Jae-ho.  I believe that people who are good at acting can digest the role well, even if it is new or different.

I also wanted to give Hyun Bin a new role who always played only beautiful characters. I wanted to show a more rough and free character, not the NIS I always see, but a man living alone in a foreign country. Actually, Hyun Bin's weight in 'Negotiation' is not that great. Even though he was relatively small, Hyun Bin had a strong desire to work with Hwang Jung-min, and the timing was right, so he was able to be cast."

She mentioned the warm past scene of Hyun Bin, who was exclaimed in the movie, as well as the shower scene with the upper body exposed, and said, "Every actor has their own brand and fan base expect something from the actor? What Hyun Bin's fans expect from Hyun Bin? I know that there is a part, and I used it well in 'Negotiations'.  If the actor said he didn’t want to do it , he wouldn’t have done it.  But the actor said he would gladly do it, so I was able to put in past scenes and shower scenes." I think I tried to make a lot of changes. I prepared very meticulously. I was worried about how the female audience would react to Hyun Bin's beard rather than just his sleek appearance, but looking at the reaction through the premiere, it seems that they are accepting it better than I thought."

'Negotiation', a film about the abduction of Koreans in Afghanistan in 2007, depicts the negotiating operation between a diplomat and a local NIS agent who went to Afghanistan to rescue Koreans who were held hostage by the Taliban in the worst abduction incident. Hwang Jung-min, Hyun-bin, and Kang Ki-young will appear, and director Lim Soon-rye of 'Little Forest', 'The Best Moment of Our Life' and 'Waikiki Brothers' took the megaphone. It will open on the 18th.
