[news] 131216 Korean singers - "8 out of 10" albums / singles sitting in the 2013 Singles & Albums Top 100 Japanese Oricon Charts



"TVXQ entered the Top 10 Album Yearly Charts in just 2 years in their capacity as Korean singers... Oricon accumulative 2013 sales revealed"

Although Korean singers have not been able to participate in the 3 year-end music festivals in Japan like the NHK "Kōhaku Uta Gassen" both last year and this year, they have, in their own way, featured prominently in the album sales aspect.

On Dec 15, Oricon received the official ranking of the yearly sales for singles, albums and DVDs through their homepage (aggregate sales from Dec 24 2012 to Dec 16 2013, actual aggregate period from Dec 10 2012 to Dec 8 2013)

According to this aggregate chart, the 2013 Top 100 Oricon Charts in the "Albums" category saw TVXQ's "Time" in #10 spot with sales of 298,389 copies, with Korean singers having 8 albums in the Top 100.

Without any surprise, the sales of the album "Time" by TVXQ, who had the highest ranking amongst the Korean singers, recorded higher sales when compared to the previous year's highest ranked K-Pop singers, Kara's "Super Girl" (#18, 295,651 copies). In addition, TVXQ entered the Top 10 of the Oricon Top 100 Yearly Charts in just 2 years as Korean singers.

In the single "Ocean" released last June, TVXQ sold 159,163 copies and took #40 place, and also occupied the highest place amongst Korean singers in the "Singles" category following their achievements in the "Albums" category. TVXQ also showed their staying power when they had 4 singles in the 2013 Oricon Singles Top 100, with "Catch Me If You Wanna" at #42 place with 156,537 copies sold, "Scream" at #47 with 145,628 copies sold, "Very Merry Xmas" with 124,517 copies sold.

In the "Concert DVD" category in the 2013 Oricion Charts, TVXQ's "Live Tour 2013 ~ TIME" sold 132,011 copies and took 7th place.

The hallyu wave in Japan has definitely died down over the past year, but one act that hasn’t been affected by the dip is TVXQ. According to the Oricon 2013 yearly chart, not only is TVXQ the highest-selling K-pop act in Japan this year, but they even outsold some of the biggest acts in J-pop.

Their sixth studio (and second since becoming a duo), Time, is the tenth highest-selling album of the year, shifting 298,389 copies. They fared just as well on the year-end singles chart, with three of the top fifty highest-sellers: “Ocean” at No. 40 with 159,163 copies, “Catch Me” at No. 42 with 156,537 copies, and “Scream” at No. 47 with 145,628 copies.

The only other K-pop acts on the chart were 2PM, who ranked No. 44 with their single, “Give Me Love,” which sold 152,781 copies, and Super Junior, whose Hero studio album placed No. 49 with 122,373 copies.

Unfortunately, there were no female Korean acts on the yearly chart — not even KARA, who were strong on both the 2011 and 2012 charts with multiple entries.

Poor KARA, but yay for TVXQ!

of all and any artist, TVXQ had the second highest grossing tour of 2013 in Japan after EXILE (who by the way have 14 members)
