Money, ambition and love blend in 'Midas'

By Kwon Mee-yoo

SBS aims to reign the local drama scene again with money, ambition and love all intertwined in the series “Midas.”

The drama will examine people’s thoughts on money and desire, rather than feature normal happenings of everyday life.

“When people pass by Yeouido or Teheran-ro, they might wonder who owns those tall buildings and why they have nothing. This drama will portray the people who own them and those who want them,” Kang Sin-hyo, the director said at a press conference for the show, Monday. Kang directed the 2008 drama “Tazza,” which dealt with the world of gamblers.

The program will show how a young lawyer changes as he becomes greedy under the influence of the richest woman in Korea.

“Midas” casts veteran actors to realistically portray the deepest desires of people blinded by ambition and how the wealthiest people live.

Jang Hyuk, the winner of 2010 KBS Drama Awards with his role in “The Slave Hunters,” returns to the small screen as Kim Do-hyeon, a lawyer awakened by an impassioned desire to achieve success.

“Kim is a person of ambition, but he also longs for the ordinary daily life he used to live,” Jang said.

Jang added he is not under any pressure to live up to the popularity of his previous drama. “I think the character and the actor are two separate things. Last year, it was Jang who played the role of slave hunter Lee Dae-gil, but now I am Jang, acting Kim in ‘Midas,’” he said. “I chose the roles because the characters suit me.”

Actress Kim Hee-ae will play the role of Yu In-hye, returning to the small screen after four years. Yu plays the eldest daughter of a billionaire family, operating hedge funds.

“Things have changed so much in four years that I feel like I’m working in a different country,” she said.

Her fashionable wardrobe on TV always becomes the talk of the town among middle-aged women. “Yu is the richest among the richest, but I will take a minimal approach in the costumes since she is a working woman,” Kim said.

Lee Min-jung, the sweetheart of the 2010 movie “Cyrano Agency,” plays the role of Lee Jeong-yeon, a nurse engaged to Kim.

“It is an honor to even star with Kim Hee-ae, an actress I want to emulate,” Lee said.

As Jang’s character grows more and more absorbed with money, and not her, Lee falters in her determination to marry Kim when another man tries to win her heart.

Singer-turned-actor No Min-woo from Trax, who portrayed the half-goblin and half-human veterinarian Park Dong-ju in the drama “My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox” (2010), plays the role of Yu Myeong-jun, the younger brother of Yu In-hye, who has a crush on Lee.

“Yu is a typical scoundrel from a rich family. He was deprived of his mother’s love as a child and turned into a womanizer. He meets Lee while hospitalized as a cancer patient,” No said.

The drama began broadcasting Tuesday, following the action-packed “Athena.” It is to compete with art school students in KBS’ “Dream High” and two men battling for their switched destinies in MBC’s “The Duo,” all airing at 9:55 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.

mumudav: have fun watching! I'm still downloading mine.

Overall reaction to Midas seems to be good..there are some that don't like it..but hey that's normal. One thing for sure is that people rave about the actors and their acting skills.

If there's one complaint it seems to center around the OST. I haven't listened to it yet but seems that a lot of people don't like the OST.

Midas was the # 1 search in many search engines immediately upon airing...even now (more than 4 hours later) it's still top 10 real time search on naver.

I honestly don't think they'd have an amazing ratings or anything....after all they are going against a well-liked drama 'Dream High' and a good sageuk 'The Duo'. I just want Midas to have a decent start and build up from there.

Stills from the set of MIDAS

Midas premiered today on SBS (replacing Athena, which went out with a whimper yesterday with a 13.3% viewership rating), and here are a bunch of promo shots and drama stills to kick off the series’ run.

I’ve read a few mixed reports of the premiere episode, some of which which describe it as taut and compelling, while others call it difficult to connect with. Not having seen it yet, I can’t weigh in, though I admit to not being all that hooked by the premise.

Jang Hyuk plays a fund manager who passes the bar and becomes a lawyer (and a “genius” one at that) who chooses to work at a small law office rather than a huge firm. He starts out in a sweet romance with fiancee Lee Min-jung, who starts out as an ER nurse who moves up a rung in the job ladder by transferring to the VIP ward. But there’s trouble on the horizon as both of them are faced with their burgeoning career ambitions, which change them and most likely endanger their love. Plus, after he meets businesswoman Kim Hee-ae, he starts to pursue money and greater ambition.

So…I see where the series is building its conflicts and it touts itself as a “blockbuster drama” in the vein of All In, replete with strong characters, lots of clashes, and loaded with dramatic suspense. Not really my style, though there have been a number of successes in this genre, such as the aforementioned All In and its not-really-a-sequel Swallow the Sun. Business machinations don’t appeal to me…but I do admit that Story of a Man did make the stock market game fun, exciting, and dare I even say, sexy. Then again, few dramas are as awesome as that one.

Midas airs on Mondays and Tuesdays on SBS.

Ratings is in line what most prediction. In the early teens. Hopefully once Dream High runs its course Midas can pick up some steam.

TNS ratings is a bit lower 8.4/9.5

I just finished watching episode 1 and I like it. It's hard to get a feel of a drama after only 1 episode but it has potential. The acting is good from everyone so far.

I was pleasantly surprised by Kim Hee Ae. I've never watched her dramas before...but she is so charismatic. Totally believable as a CEO.

Jang Hyuk and Lee Min Jung are sweet in their scenes together. The proposal is sweet.

Hyuk's acting as always is spot on. Even when he has no dialogue, his eyes speak volumes.

Min Jung's acting is right for her character too....and I'd be curious to see her melodramatic turn later on.

I thought the first episode was pretty good! Ughh but I can just foresee Dohyun being manipulated in the future.
